Ninja Kamui (2024)
Amazing start, falls off very hard
When this show first aired, it was really damn good. Top tier animation, not corners cut, an interesting story. As it has progressed, however, it's now CGI-ridden trash. Without spoiling, the combat went from beautiful animated ninja fighting to something that is not at all to the same quality that the show started with and now relies almost entirely on CGI to function. That CGI is noticeable and bad.
The story is interesting and compelling, although possibly a bit generic and predictable. But with the current level of animation, I'm no longer interested in watching. At episode 8, I just skimmed and decided I was no longer interested. It's truly a shame considering how good the first few episodes are, but the quality has plummeted, and the show is now just kind of bad. Not worth watching.
Dune (2021)
Science Fantasy Masterpiece
Nothing to dislike. Everything was stellar. This is one of those movies I got done watching, completely emotionally engaged, and was sure the reviews would have it pegged at least at a 9. I guess 8.3 is still pretty good comparatively but I really think this movie is spectacular and should for sure be rated higher.
Altered Carbon (2018)
Underrated
I don't understand hardly any of the gripes people have with this show. First, I didn't read the book, but just because it's not like the book, doesn't make it bad. Some people are complaining that it was too cliche at times, especially with Ortega's Mexican family scenes. People know that the super homely, traditional Mexican family exists, right? Is it not okay to make her family like this? As far as the "cliche" goes, it was done well. The acting from the family was good, there were relevant differences in the "cliche" based on show atmosphere, what is there to complain about, really? Frequent but not over-bearing twists with almost no fluff scenes. Acting was great, across the board. The main characters I thought were especially impressive. Action scenes were great, nothing that seemed ridiculous and implausible like most Sci-Fi shows tend to with their scenes. Most of the action is intense and futuristic yet plausible, thanks to the show crafting an immersive, interesting world with deep characters who can exploit this new world. I really cannot talk enough about the world they build without spoiling the initial episodes, but it's a Sci-Fi fan's dream, visually and idealistically. The story is really good and only a few levels less complex than WestWorld. If you are a Sci-Fi fan, ignore every critic; watch this show. Now. If you're not a Sci-Fi fan, watch it anyway. It's just really good.
Sword Art Online (2012)
Emotional roller-coaster; falls off fast, though; minor spoilers
TL:DR Watch the amazing first arc, and if you decide you want to keep going, then give it a shot. But definitely watch the first arc.
The most important thing to note about SAO is that there are very different vibes to this show, depending on which story arc you're watching. I rate the show an 8/10, but this is my average for all of the arcs in the show that feel quite different from each other. So lets start with the first 14 episodes, the Aincrad arc.
I wholeheartedly recommend this arc to anyone who likes sci-fi or gaming. It has some cheesy elements, but if you've learned to embrace the cheese like I have, it's an awesome show. The scenes in every single episode are beautiful. The art in this show is amazing. The virtual world they fight in is extremely cool, and while it does have a dark twist, it doesn't take away the feeling of envy watching cartoon characters play the coolest looking VR game of all time. The story is also quite complex, and characters are fleshed out in interesting ways. I give it a 10. Loved it. There have been plenty of times I have recommended just this arc to people, and told them to stop watching afterwards.
The second arc, Fairy Dance, was... not as fulfilling as the first. There are some cool fight scenes, but without spoiling as much as possible, the story transitions to a different setting that is just not as fascinating as the original. The story elements (specifically concerning character bonds) carrying over from the first arc made this quite enjoyable for me none-the-less, but I must say it feels much different from the first arc. The first arc had dark moments, and a somewhat serious tone, but also focused a lot on beautiful moments born in that world and high-spirited efforts in sad times. The second arc takes a much more sinister approach, and can really wrench at your heart strings if you manage to get emotionally attached to the characters in the first arc. I gave it a 6, because honestly the new world they transition to really just did not at all capture the "magic" of the original one, and the mere comparison makes it look really lame.
I quite liked the third arc, Phantom Bullet, even though it takes a bit of a lighter tone than the previous arcs. It is still serious enough, and this new world is much more interesting than the last, even if you hate that weird avatar as much as I did. Although the world doesn't quite capture the magic from the first one, the storytelling picks up again and the plot is really quite interesting. It also has a lot of foreshadowing for SAO3 (I think?), which will be cool. I gave this arc an 8, for some pretty great scenes and some solid story/character development.
The fourth story arc, Calibur, revolves around a player getting a kick ass sword. Not really much of a spoiler, at this point this feels like a setup arc. Some cool fight scenes, okay story, 6/10 for what feels a bit like lack of effort in some areas, but also highlighting some pretty cool stuff. Unlike the rest of the arcs, this story arc was by far the lightest toned. Much less is at stake in this arc than the previous ones. By like, 1 million %. Reaching back to my main point, the show has so many different tones, it's crazy.
The fifth story arc focuses almost entirely on a single character's development, and feels kind of lame. I really like the character a lot, so I didn't mind it too much, but if this character didn't appeal to you then this arc is basically worse than filler. I don't want to rate it. I have no idea what to make of it. */10.
TL:DR Watch the amazing first arc, and if you decide you want to keep going, then give it a shot. But definitely watch the first arc.
The 100 (2014)
Give it a few episodes
A lot of the negative reviews (almost all) focus on the fact it's a "teen drama" (which it isn't) and continue to talk about a lot of things that happen during the show which relate to this fact. The show has an awesome premise, and while the first few episodes are very "teen drama" I believe that these episodes are intentionally set up like that. The "world" is exceptionally harsh, and these naive teens don't fully understand that until a few episodes in. They learn the hard way. If you have seen the entirety of the first season you would know this is not a simple teen drama. Drama? Yes. There is drama. Scientific inaccuracies to convey drama and push story? Yes that's in this show. But it does these things well. Very well. Also, whoever wrote this show may be a little cheesy (less cheesy than shows like Arrow or Flash) but the story is phenomenal. Every episode contains many plot twists for an array of interesting characters who grow exponentially over the course of the two seasons I've seen. Legitimately every episode comes with serious plot twists and incredible moments. And it doesn't feel like these moments are fillers or simply flashy explosions. They're all relative to the main plot. Sometimes they're dark and sinister. Other times they're romantic. Many times they're political. This show will keep you entertained, all the time, with only the first few episodes of "teen drama" to complain about. Watch this show. You will like it. Nay, love it.
