Essex Boys Retribution (2013)
Tenth rate at best
Almost everything about this movie is bad. The script is appalling but this is overshadowed by the fact that it's acted out as though this was the first time the cast had ever stepped in front of a camera. Not one character is believable largely because of these two failings.
Borrowing loosely from the 'Essex Boys' history of drug dealing and violence that followed it the attempt is made to bring the scene up to date with a crew of brothers taking the position of the 'new boys'. The back story is delivered by the Bill Murray of TV's The Bill who you would think could add some weight to the film sadly this isn't the case. He instead offers a performance that is cruising along at best.
Reading the other reviews I can only imagine that the writers were friends and family of the director or they have set their bar very low for what they expect from a movie.
Ulli Lommel's Zodiac Killer (2005)
Garbage
Awful, awful, awful.
A condescending remark at the start and a few nasty autopsy photos does not a good movie make. Once again I'm amazed at the determination and skill that some people have in achieving a movie production and yet they don't have the pride to realise that what they have made is an utter pile of crap.
I sat and tried to think of a redeeming feature so that I could at least balance my criticism but the only one I could think of was that the opening track by Pink was pretty good....I wonder if she has seen this?
Watch this at your peril, the boredom may kill you.
Land of the Dead (2005)
Disappointed
I was very pleased when I heard that Romero had his next instalment of his Zombie saga ready to roll. On the back end of a fine pair of movies namely 28 Days and the Dawn of the Dead remake I was expecting great things from Mr. Romero as the man who got the Genre kick started was sure to want to rise above his own imitators.
How disappointed was I when I watched Land of the Dead! Sometimes its hard to pin point where a movie goes wrong for you but in the case of LOTD this is not the case. The flaws are obvious. I think that in most of the posts I have read the lack of any real back-story has been highlighted. The characters are fairly innocuous, the standard fare of any brain in a box action flick, perhaps with the exception of Riley although he doesn't really supply much in the way of charisma or (certainly at the end) reasoning.
The 'evolution'of the zombies (who should surely be skeletal by now?) is clumsily handled and is given no depth. The attacks are random and have no true suspense. With the exception of the scene at the river they are not given any real love with the camera in terms of enriching their character.
As far as the gore goes, and what Zombie would be complete without innovative deaths and gross out scenes, I'm sure the aficionados were kept happy. I'm personally not fussed one way or the other but hey, whatever flicks your switch.
In short the movies lacks the depth, style and characterisation of Romeros previous films. Its not exciting, revealing or even fun. Sometimes its even dumb.
I hold out hope for one more movie, perhaps to give the saga some closure. This is one for die hard fans only.
