Apples Never Fall (2024)
Watchable Mess
Headlined by two pros Benning and Neil - I had such high hopes but I honestly can't believe how 'not great' this is. It feels like the director kept saying 'more' in every scene. There is ZERO subtlety in what is supposed to be a mystery. Writing is poor, scenes are rushed and the whole things feels campy at best.
This is a beach read book attempting to be a White Lotus but it just doesn't deliver. Don't get me wrong, it's watchable but nothing more that a soap opera drama in this production.
It didn't help that Paramount requires commercials dragging this out even further that it should. Black.
Saltburn (2023)
Cautionary tale about having, needing and seeking wealth
Loved the characters, the sets, the timing and the plot although a bit predictable the story was still told in a unique way. I don't mind a slow burn.
That said, I would have loved for this to be a series that had the time to explore the characters even more...maybe even their backstories and how they became so troubled. The character development felt rushed yet there was so much surprise and intrigue around every corner.
Also, did an entire section of the movie involving Carrie Mulligan get cut in editing? I dont know how you cast such an incredible talent for such a small (albeit unique) but fairy insignificant role?
Moonage Daydream (2022)
The sound editing killed me
Bowie is an all time great ... for a movie about this incredible artist you'd think they could have perfected the sound quality and balance better - it was a mess. Volume uo/down the entire movie.... 90% of the film is constant random images dropped in over muffled Bowie interviews and grainy concert footage.
Time jumps constantly from decade to decade, no progression of his career - again like the editing room just threw it all in at random.
If all of this imagery, overload music and randomness was meant to mirror Bowie from a style perspective it was a mistake. Made the film frustrating to sit through - at 60min in I gave up and I LOVE BOWIE.
Hell on Wheels (2011)
Really bad...like REALLY BAD
Over acting
Terrible Writing
Scenery, backgrounds and lighting feels fake
Tries so hard to be gritty but feels like a bad 70s soap opera or dare I say, an over budgeted music video.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Give me subtitles!!!
Turned off on the preview - the VIPs were that bad.
Ailey (2021)
Simply Moving
Saw this at Sidewalk Film Fest - Moving in modern dance, moving in Ailey's journey through life and moving in so many aspects of social change.
Beautifully shot with old and new footage and the dance - oh the dance is simply mesmerizing. It's an important and emotional documentary - I didn't want it to end.
You'll see it and feel it.
The Woman in the Window (2021)
All Star Cast of Award Winners - still falls flat
First hour was set up like a psychological thriller, with hopes of a Hitchcock twist. Instead this attempt at an obvious "homage" to something from the golden age of Hollywood, fell straight through the floor and reverted to a B rated, campy, 80s suspense story line. Totally unrealistic and utterly lazy in the end. The agoraphobic house bound hermit suddenly walks out her door in 4 inch heels? Give me a break.
How did these A-Listers make such total crap?
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Classic sequel trying too hard
Slow!!!! Horrific writing, Little action, choppy plot, casting so-so, characters lame and CGI was just plain bad. I really wanted to like this. Too many wasted opportunities - and they had 1984 to work with!
I wouldn't watch again.
After Life (2019)
Laughed hard then cried hard
This is so shockingly good. Real, Raw, funny, and emotional. I loved the characters and can't wait to see how they develop further. A love story to grief, showcasing both the pain it piles on you and the inevitable beauty that comes as a result. And Penelope Wilton is just everything.
Billions (2016)
Season 5 - Shark has been jumped
Corny reference writing and ridiculous scenarios means this show has run its course. Early seasons were creative and suspenseful. The attempts to work in special guests are lame. All done.
Beastie Boys Story (2020)
Story We know is great. Format Not so much
First..I LOVE Beasties. Every album. This was the soundtrack of my middle school, high school, college. Saw them 3 times live. So much of this was a much-deserved tribute to amazing MCA (Adam Y) and watching them and their craft "grow up"over thirty years. Sadly, the format was just off. Beasties are boundary pushing musicians, not stage actors or scripted presenters. It wasn't intimate. Tech issues caused uncomfortable delays. Some great backstory and heartfelt moments but I'd love to see their story told in the same format as The Defiant Ones with more perspectives, personal interviews &commentary.
Westworld (2016)
Seasons 1&2 Epic -Season 3 so far disappointing
Not loving the new story format - Maybe actors filmed at their own schedule. Three episodes in and we have separate episodes for Bernard/Maeve, Charlotte, Deloris. That's it. And suddenly everyone is very conveniently a host all of a sudden? The imagery is spectacular but waiting for the story to bring these great actors/characters together in the same episode or dare I say the same frame?
Four Weddings and a Funeral (2019)
Meh
Watched first 5 episodes on a plane. situations were obvious, jokes forced and nothing very engaging happens during the first 5 episodes. NOT witty and the characters had zero depth. Only similarity to 1994 film is the name.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Way over-hyped
First off, Sandler is good, because we forget it Sandler. The rest is just poorly executed storytelling. Rapid pacing didn't help poor character dev and overall kept feeling disjointed. Disappointed with each scene.
The Outsider (2020)
Not the worst, but not the best either
Frustratingly boring after episode 2. Feel like they were filling time until the end. Agree that the cast is excellent but felt like the story was just being told to every character by every character. Blah.
The Crown: Tywysog Cymru (2019)
No subtitles?
Half the episode was in Welsh...while the viewer could pick up story telling by the actors non verbals I was terribly bored and at end irritated.
Nobodies (2017)
not the best
Watched all episodes and really, really wanted to like this...love McCarthy. it seem like they are going for a level of uncomfortable comedy like the Larry David show but the characters just come off too socially awkward, annoying and unlikeable. The bumbling mishaps are predictable even after only 2 episodes. Never really laughed once.
