Baking Up Love (2021)
Not bad, sort of feels like a Hallmark movie
I picked this up recently at the dollar store, I thought my wife would like it as it looked like a Hallmark film.
It sort of does, but also misses the mark a little. The main plot of the story is a bakery owner entering a contest for a money prize for making the best pumpkin dessert in Morton, Illinois. Which after watching this and looking it up, is considered the pumpkin capital.
Throw in some friends who fall in love and religious overtones and you have this movie. Decent, cute, but not something my wife would watch again.
Nirvana (1997)
A slightly cheesy yet very good Cyberpunk classic
While trying to track down Cyberpunk movies I hadn't seen years ago, I ran across Nirvana. Being a Christopher Lambert fan I was surprised I hadn't heard of it.
The main plot of the story is that Christopher Lambert is in a state of depression sure to his wife leaving to "find herself" so to speak. Meanwhile his most recent video game creation has become self aware and wants to be deleted.
The two stories interweave as Lambert goes on an adventure and meets other "Angels", normally known as hackers, who fly through cyberspace committing crimes and such to make ends meet.
There's nothing like the 90's setting for a cyberpunk film, it has a nice layer of cheese to it, but also just feels right. There is also some spiritual and religious overtones in this film about seeking Nirvana for yourself, just as Christopher Lambert is trying to achieve.
This has become one of my favorite sci Fi films and I'm hopeful one day it gets a Blu ray. Currently you can buy an American version with slightly goofy dubs that add to the cheese factor. Or you can get the region free Italian DVD which is longer and adds some more runtime to the film.
Whichever version you decide he you watch, I highly recommend this film for Cyberpunk fans. Make sure to watch it in the winter, as I feel it enhances the setting.
American Sunset (2010)
Decent, but not the ending I had expected
The story starts out with Corey Haim being drugged and his wife being kidnapped. It get's a little wonky when Corey hires a PI to find his wife and he accompanies said PI all around town following clues. It's pretty interesting, but I never understood how both Corey and the PI were so far ahead of the cops that the police had even left clues at the initial scene of the crime. Both Corey and the PI sort of work through their initial angst with one another, and their own personal problems as well. They eventually become a quasi-buddy team. Which was sort of cool to watch. However without spoiling anything, the ending threw me for a loop. It went from dark and sort of a murder thriller, to being more of a underhanded business film. It was decent, worth a rental but not really a purchase. I was a big Corey Haim fan and it was cool to see him work in a newish film, he looked sort of tired in some scenes. But I guess that was due to the being drugged and his wife being taken? I would hope so.

Gamers (2006)
Funny and dry, worth a rental at least.
I just got this from Hollywood Video for $2 used. I had read it was really goofy and stupid, and yes it is. But it's also fun and if you like D&D or larping or even just the movie role models it's fun! It's a cheesy mockumentary about a group of men who have been role playing for over 20 years and are breaking a record by playing a D&D type game called Demons, Nymphs, and Dragons. The cursing is abundant, the humor is toilet, and I think you have to be at least semi nerdy to have a good time with this. It's definitely not a main stream movie that most would enjoy. But if you like a dirty Napolean Dynamite type humor then you may find something appealing. Much better than expected.
Chaos (2002)
Not the road warrior, but not horrible either
I purchased this movie from a local Big Lots for $3. I'm a big fan of The Road Warrior and Mad max. This movie labels itself as being similar. I would say that's a pretty slim comparison. As for the quality the sound can be a little low, and the quality is most definitely not on par with normal Hollywood features but it wasn't that bad either. The film centers around a main character who gets mixed up with a metal circus. Chaos ensues, one on one battles, back stabbing, and even a small love story thrown in for good measure. It was an OK film that I would watch again if I was feeling in a bit of a goofy mood, or even if I just wanted a background type of film playing. The movie wasn't amazing, but wasn't bad either. It's a fun B movie that a sci fi/apocalyptic fan might find a few interesting bits of. Worth the $3 I had spent ;)
Lost Boys: The Tribe (2008)
Not as good as the original, but had it's moments!
I was a huge fan of the first film, one of my favorite actually. The second film has a little bit of a campy feeling to it but also had some really good dark and dank moments. The vampires scream and howl like crazy which I thought sounded awesome and went along perfectly with the make up. I thought Corey Feldman over acted his part and the two main characters could have been casted a little more wisely. But Angus Sutherland did a good job, even though you could tell he was trying to sort of sound like Kiefer in the first film. I think this movie was good overall and could have definitely been released in theaters and done well. Worth seeing, especially for fans of the original.
