Bob's Burgers: Mission Impossi-Bob (2024)
This episode is particularly important incredible
If you like true crime and mystery, you'll enjoy this episode. This is one of the funniest episodes I've seen in a while. I can't quite put my finger on it, almost seems like a different writer did this episode or that it was partially improved, but Teddy was so comical. The actual plot line starts off wildly interesting and the chemistry between him and Bob was spot on. I recommend putting your phone away and paying attention to this one, there's a special kind of magic to this one. I honestly could have watched a whole movies just on their interactions. The families plot-line was par for the course.
Bob's Burgers: The Plight Before Christmas (2022)
The Plight Before Christmas is exemplary writing.
This might go down as one of the best Bob's Burgers episodes. You've got wonderful simultaneous story-lines, a great poem, and excellent score - you see Linda being proud, Bob being proud, Tina supporting Louise, Bob and Linda up to their antics. It's wonderful to see Bob not screw up video-taping the concert and to actually see Gene produce competent music and put his abilities to use. I am equally glad that Tina chose to read her real (good) poem, instead of the show relying on cheap comedy. The episodes plays a little outside of what they normally do, with thought-bubbles, and has some pretty on the nose comedy about teachers being underpaid. I was touched enough to decide to write a review and im glad others were as well. This episode deserves its high rating.
The Northman (2022)
A trippy cinematic action-packed masterpiece
Robert Eggers is an artist not to be taken lightly. The Northman is an action packed, Norse mythology drenched, gritty, trippy masterpiece. For a time the film will advance with incredible score and cinematography, brainwashing you into entering this world, then suddenly like the beat of a drum, the pacing will transition slow giving you a moment to breath, only to advance the story before leading you back into trippy rhythmic perfection. This movie is definitely not for the faint of heart. If you can allow yourself enjoy the ride, you'll leave revising your list of greatest films. The Northman did in 2 hours what GoT couldn't in 8 seasons.
Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000)
A very good comedy show with genius human appeal
The little things Larry gets mad at, the show's structure in the way every scene is important and advances the narrative while being uniquely unscripted for the dialogue; this is an amazing show.
Dark Tourist (2018)
David Farrier is an incredible host (wtf are these other reviews going on about?)
Seriously, he's great. Comparisons to Louis Theroux aside, he is a great presenter with a unique POV. Some episodes might have been a little flat, like the New Orleans/JFK one, however, still a great concept and presents interesting sights with a pretty cool host. I'm assuming some of these others are maybe upset because of his politics on twitter or something else, but i dont get that he's dull, rude, or anything else. His questions are very well thought-out and he does a good job being human. I'm excited for season 2.
Dark Places, Deadly Illusions (2021)
Are they paying TikTokers to lie and promote this movie?!
Why are people on tik tok hyping this up and how is this #1 in Canada.
It's ok as a p*rno I guess, if that, but as a movie it's pretty bad
Unhinged (2020)
Zero stars
Made me mad watching it at how stupid and unbelievable the woman and other characters were. Literally couldn't even finish it
Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)
The "type" the film critiques, may be it's saving grace.
Velvet Buzzsaw quite enjoyably pokes fun at pseudo-intellectual snobbery, and perhaps is only "mind-bending" for irony's sake. The story highlights the dangers of a reviewer's ability to inflate art's value, yet by this end, the film sets up in a catch-22 in that, perhaps those who don't like the film simply "don't get it".
While the thriller aspect of this film is unique, these moments hold the hand of the viewer by avoiding any and all red-herrings, and offering a straight forward and predictable outcome.
Gyllenhaal's ability to portray eccentricity and emotion is perfectly displayed in Okja, Nightcrawler, and of course Donny Darko, but in this film, his character seems inauthentic.
Searching (2018)
A great movie for the nostalgic 20 somethings, and for parents looking to connect
"Searching" is an incredibly well done, modern and unique film. The film style is attached and natural yet, much different than conventional styles. The creates its own character that gives us a point of view but, while feeling all too familiar, allows us to truly relate to the characters' cyber-lives. While not predictable, this film seems like it's drawn straight from the headlines. Perhaps it is this realness that makes this movie so impactful. The attention to detail in the way that this film is written adds many layers and nuances to the twist and turns that the plot-line takes. John Cho's portrayal of David Kim, a father simply seeking to understanding is daughter, is breathtaking. Similar to "Hush" and "A Quiet Place" this movie has paved a path that while be hard to replicate / replace.
This film is the perfect length, and will leave you feeling satisfied and eager to recommend.
Disenchantment (2018)
A world of its own, in which you'll get lost
Disenchantment is an incredible watch. If you're a fan of Groening's work having grown up watching the Simpsons, later developing a deep emotional connection to the complexity of Fry and friends in Futurama, then this show is certainly for you. With recognizable character voices, and homage-like drawing patterns, Disenchantment offers a familiar feel, while at the same time being completely unique and stand alone. The world of Disenchantment is beautiful and begs to be explored, while the characters, deep and full of life, each with a story to tell.
Eric Andre expands his portfolio by lending his unique voice to this show, which suites his character perfectly. Bean, the strong female lead, goes on many quests with her friend Elfo, quests which will draw you in emotionally leading you to care more and more for the characters as each episode progresses. The season is entirely binge-able, which has revitalized Groening's passion for story telling.
The continuous nature of the shows unraveling in "parts" is different from the Simpsons, and makes the show feel more similar the Futurama, however, Disenchantment offers many aspect that make the show feel entirely stand alone, and even mysterious. Disenchantment goes its own direction, which makes it a unique and worthwhile watching experience. Add this show to your repertoire - You will not be disappointed.
How It Ends (2018)
A modern 2012 / Y2K that will leave you wanting your time back
How it Ends is a 2018 Netflix original attempt at grabbing the cash of the already popular, yet niche, "end times" movie category. With an amazing cast and set design this movie had the potential to be one of the biggest films of 2018. Unfortunately, poor writing, awkward tension and forced conversations made this movie seem less-and-less realistic as the storyline progressed.
While the actual content of this movie is passable, for those who enjoy the post apocalyptic movies, this movie falls into the same cliché traps that you'd hope it would avoid in this type of movie. With imbedded end-times prophecies and conspiracy-theory government simulations, the movie does an 'ok' job in creating a realistic and fearful atmosphere. The questions you build up throughout the movie will only multiply and leave you feeling visually "violated" (for lack of a better word). The movie's title becomes quite ironic given it's ending so, to spare yourself from disappointment, if you've simply been drawn to watch this movie because of the content of the trailer - you should leave it at that, the trailer.
