The Red King (2024)
Reimagined Wicker Man
Thoroughly enjoyed this show, you will get the wicker man vibes mixed with Hot Fuzz. Basically police sergeant forced out of her division due to whistle blowing on two other officers gets a new posting on a fictional Welsh island but the island has a secret. Coming to terms with a clearly weird populus she has to figure out the disappearance of a local child but uncovers much more. It will keep you guessing till the final episode and split your moral stance on what would you do in that situation. This had my wife and I gripped and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. The only thing that confused me is her last posting is in Newcastle and she's posted to St Jory a fictional island off the cost of Wales (shot in Cranstan, Alnwick Northumberland) which is reinforced with Jill Halfpenny turning up help with forensic investigation. Yet it seems Newcastle police have influence over this Welsh island and not say local Swansea police.
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)
One of the weakest if not THE weakest of the series
First off the Enterprise is on its 3rd week of repairs and I even basic systems aren't working, doors ect. At one point Kirk can't even record his log on a recording pad which is a mobile device manufactured elsewhere so it doesn't make sense that this would be faulty.
Kirk asks Starfleet is there no other ships in the quadrant as his ship isn't finished. Starfleet say there is but no Captain's with his experience, this is highly unlikely but however wouldn't it make sense to send to the Enterprise and another ship as back up?
There's a scene when they infiltrate Paradise city and they attack and something explodes weirdly Chekov whose still on the ship and talking to the main villain jumps and reacts to the explosion like it happened on the ship.
Road House (2024)
A film that we didn't need
No clue why Jake would have took this project, no where near as good as the original. Injection of out of place humour that just work. At the end of the day I stuck with it till the end and it's just meh. Now let's get onto Conor McGregor, Conor, Conor, Conor the huge muscle bound torpedo sent to sink this film. His acting skills are zero as a bad guy he's like a boulder rolling down hill, no finesse, he brought nothing to this film absolutely NOTHING. The main bad guy Brandt, you just don't care about, no menace, in fact I had to go look up what his name was again. Unlike the original Roadhouse this is a film you'll watch once and forget about it, never to return.
The Marvels (2023)
Oh Dear
Clearly aimed at kids, not a patch on the other Marvels films. I gave up after the first hour but went back to it later to see if it improved which it didn't. The effects seemed sub par, they really need to up their game for future films. The young avengers just won't appeal to me at all when it eventually comes. Beasts CGI seemed ropey I cringed when I saw it.
Like I said clearly aimed at kids and I'm sure kids will enjoy it but for me the last good Marvel film was Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Roll on Deadpool 3 and hope it's everything that it's promising to be although in the trailer Wades face effects seemed a bit off, better effects in the first film.
Fall (2022)
Hunters cleavage earned the 4 stars
2 incredibly stupid girls decided to climb a crumbling tower like they were in a FarCry video game. Some nice visuals, beyond that the film is meh. I laughed when their car got stolen that was pretty funny. Review needs more characters so I suggest go watch another movie, I think there's a documentary about a guy who climbed El Capitan that has some great visuals. Still not enough characters, how about a joke.
Comic sans and Wingdings walk into a bar
The barman shouts "hey, we don't serve your type here "
There's a new trendy cafe opened near me called Karma
There's no menu, you get what you deserve.
Way Upstream (1987)
Pathetic
I've rated this 2 only for the fact Emma gets her thruppney bits oot at the end. This film will frustrate you at how pathetic these people are. I could care less for any of them, nothing redeeming about any of them. If known some weak people in my time but nothing quite as soppy as the Alistair character.
The whole thing is unrealistic, my wife chose this film for us to watch and she apologized afterwards. Maybe it's the fact we're Scottish, both of us sat watching this saying nope, I'd knock F oot of him and kick him off the boat. I have no clue why this is rated so high or people saying they've watched this several times, they must be as pathetic as Alistair.
Searching for Sugar Man (2012)
Great man, Great music
So glad I watched this documentary, didn't think I was going to enjoy it, boy was I wrong. This man is the best of us a truly beautiful soul. When success didn't work out, he just got on with life. His music touched many many people in South Africa and he had no idea. Amazing how this unfolds, if you like music and inspirational People then please, please watch this.
Eli Roth Presents: A Ghost Ruined My Life (2021)
Dubious
Watched up to E6 and these are over dramatised and potentially could be mental issues in some of these cases. Episode 5 the guy says he has issues every night when asleep, the production crew could have spent a couple of nights monitoring. Haunted Hospital, Paranormal Nightshift, Celebrity Ghost Stories handle all these type of accounts better.
Zumbo's Just Desserts: Fruit Dessert (2016)
What's with the sound
They really messed up with the sound on this episode, the background music totally drowned out the talking, made it hard to concentrate
Star Trek: Discovery: Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2 (2019)
Truly Epic season finale
Everything about this episode was truly epic, what an excellent wrap up. The battle was on par or even exceeded movie standards. The enterprise at the end heading off on it's adventures makes me want to demand a Enterprise series with Pike at the helm.
Totally loved, loved, loved this episode
Christopher Robin (2018)
A Modern Classic
Wonderful feel good film for the family, do yourself a favour get the kids on the couch and settle down to watch this with some tea and honey
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
This will rock you
If you want a successful movie add a Queen soundtrack. This has it all, the casting is perfect. The audience at the cinema were all middle aged and they were travelling back in time. Queen are all time legends there will never be another Mercury.
When then movie ended I turned to my GF and said we lived through some great times music wise, the couple next to me agreed, they'd been dancing away in their seat throughout.
Long live Queen
Luke Cage: The Main Ingredient (2018)
The only decent episode out of season 2
IMO it is better when they crossover, this season like the first one was dragging and I found myself skipping through a lot of boring bits to some action. Danny Rand brought some action and decent fighting to the mix, roll on Punisher season 2 to satisfy my palate
Luke Cage (2016)
He might be the strongest and toughest of The Defenders but...
His show is the weakest of the bunch in my opinion. Each episode was a drag, I stuck with it though to see if there was a diamondback in the rough but sadly no. Even the end boss battle was meh which is typical when they try and stretch a story out over too many episodes and a set budget that clearly doesn't allow too much destruction and effects.
Cobra Kai (2018)
Cobra Kai-a mofo
Binged this in one sitting, it had me hooked after the first episode. Set mostly from Johnny's point of view it takes you down memory lane and how his life has taken a turn for the worse after the events from 30 years ago.
Almost a complete roll reversal of the characters Johnny trying to pick himself up and reignite Cobra Kai albeit haphazardly and with a mind set which is stuck in the 80's.
My son and I rewatched the original movie before going into the series just to refresh our memories. There is some flashbacks but these are few and handled well. The shoes are an easy watch, I think they're only about 35 minutes long.
Very funny in parts and has a great soundtrack, what's not to love about this show.
The Postman (1997)
A good film that doesn't deserve the negativity
I had never read the book so basing this movie on it's own merits, I like these post apocalyptic movies and this is no exception, beautiful scenery ( I believe it was shot in Oregon ) lone man trying to survive and keep out the way of the Holnists ( an army of survivalists taking control of the region with oppression )
Costner donning a Postman uniform he finds while escaping the Holnists comes across a settlement and pretends he's a new Postal Officer set up by the new government to restore communication across the states. This little lie sparks hope within the community and after he leaves a movement starts to grow to create links between the settlements within that state.
The bad guy in this is General Bethlehem brilliantly played by Will Patton, egotistical, delusional tyrant and leader of the Holnists a group of followers of Nathan Holn who caused an uprising which led to Americas 2nd and most devastating civil war. I imagine Nathan Holn was like todays Donald Trump stirring up hatred and division leaning towards the right wing, so small petty people likes of Bethlehem grab their chance to shine.
Bethlehem has met his match with The Postman who doesn't want to fight more wants to try and sneak away and get on with his golden years but after a harsh winter stuck in a cabin he comes back to find a fully operational postal service working between the settlements created by Ford Lincoln Mercury the true visionary for someone so young. After trying to stop it all and stop the young riders going out running routes himself he relents and has to face facts that he can't stop the movement he inadvertently started so gathers an Army of his own to counter the brutal Bethlehem.
Beautifully shot and well paced I can't understand the negativity it got at the time in fact it put me off watching this film, when I actually sat down one evening and gave it a go I realised I had sold myself short this is a gem.
Open Range (2003)
Modern Classic
This is a beautifully shot movie, the scenery is sublime it truly does take you away.
The story is a simple tried and tested formula good guys trying to get on with their life bad guy throwing his weight and power around and drive them off.
It does capture the flavour of that time and decent attention to detail. I've watched this movie a few times and watched it on DVD with directors commentary which a rarely do, there one thing that Costner said at the end of the commentary something along the lines of " if this is the last film I ever make then I'm quite happy with that and I mean that sincerely " I might not be quoting exactly but it sat with me as it was heartfelt. He knows he made a good job of this movie and I for one am glad he made it.
The gunfight at the end is one of the best you'll see in a western albeit infinite ammo time, it's well orchestrated and encompasses the whole town, eventually the townsfolk grow a backbone and get involved, just epic.
Wonder (2017)
Don't be afraid to catch feels
I remember when I saw the trailer for this in the cinema, it caught me by surprise I could feel myself welling up, just at the trailer.
My GF will not watch this due to the tear factor, so I sat and watched this on my own.
It does get you welling up and angry ect, the kid trying to over come his shyness and trying to brave his first time at school with a facial deformity. It handles it all quite well with each of the characters getting little story arcs of their own to show where they all fit in the big picture.
Strange why the mother left it till middle school to suddenly send her son into the world, kids are more accepting at a younger age, she should have sent him to nursery then primary that would have stood him in good stead.
However he makes friends and becomes for confident and pretty much wins everyone over, it is a standard feel good film and does kick you in the feels. Not a film I'll go back too but appreciated it for what it was.
Death Wish (2018)
Mediocre at best
I watched the original a few months ago and it has it's failings but it did have shock factor back in the day.
This is run of the mill and by the numbers revenge plot, I cannot for the life of me understand all the 10/10 ratings, that's just mental. This is no where near a modern day classic, it's just ok. Maybe The Punisher TV show has spoiled me somewhat now that's brutal and shocking and by far my favourite Marvel TV Show.
Also the liberals marking so low and stating it's an NRA propaganda fest, nope it's not that either.
My problem with this movie is Willis himself, Eli Roth obviously played it safe with a Hollywood action star A lister to draw attention. The character is a normal guy who's had his life turned upside down, totally lost and turns into a vigilante and tries to come to terms with what he's becoming.
Bronson made this transition look stressful and sickening but Willis seems to move into it without missing a heartbeat, straight to the gun. I would have hoped a more daring director would have went for another actor someone not associated with action roles. Someone who would show a true trial and error process of doing something like this.
It's not a terrible film but it's not one that I will return too either, it was just ok and if you're going to try and relaunch this type of franchise, it's a bad start
Equilibrium (2002)
No, Not without incident
I've watched this movie a good few times, it's an easy go to escapism film. I didn't know what to expect the first time I watched it, part 1984 part Fahrenheit 451. But I loved it, it's all handled pretty well and moves at a decent pace and that ending when he's on the lie detector, just brilliant.
Of course there's a few plot holes but hey ho let's go and chuck some bullets around that'll get you through
Deadpool 2 (2018)
Not as good as the first
I loved the trailers and got me going for the movie but alas I found myself getting a bit bored and not as engaged as I hoped I'd be. My girlfriend who loved the first one hated this, I could tell.
The cinema wasn't as laughing out load as I thought it would be not like Ragnarok or Infinity Wars. There was some moments that got a few chuckles and I liked some of the gags but most of it felt forced and we'd seen it all before especially the intro albeit more of a James Bond theme this time round.
The Indian taxi driver was just dead weight and really didn't want to see his part expanded, there was no need really.
Sorry but I didn't feel the same way as I did with the first film, totally blew me away, couldn't wait to see it again. Maybe I've been spoiled with Thor and Infinity war
Busanhaeng (2016)
All a Horde the Train to Busan
I had seen the trailer for this and had high hopes but wasn't expecting to be blown away by this.
I don't mind foreign films and coping with subtitles as there are a lot of foreign gems out there of which this is one.
On the whole after watching it I felt this was set at the same time as World War Z, just from a South Korean point of view.
The action was well placed and kept you going confined on the tight space of a train it felt claustrophobic and again reminded me of the zombie outbreak on the plane in WWZ.
The one scene that got me was the little girl singing Aloha Oe such a lovely song anyway but her singing it and crying after what she'd been through....just wow
The Office: Dinner Party (2008)
I heard the ice cream truck
Such a great episode, so many good bits, I believe the hardest episode to film due to them cracking up all the time especially the scene with the Plasma TV.
For me when Michael is showing them around the bedroom and describes where he sleeps had me in stitches the first time I saw it.
The Office (2005)
My All time favourite TV Comedy show
I've watched this show from start to finish more than a few times now, it's an easy watch my son and I love it.
I've just recently watched it again over the period of a Year with my GF who's never seen it and she immediately wanted to start from the beginning again, she loved it that much.
Season 1 is just a straight port of the British version but season 2 onwards it pretty much comes into its own. The British version is way more adult in my opinion and I've never watched that with my son.
One of my favourite scenes and episodes is the house party were Michael and Jan invite Jim, Pam, Dwight, Andy and Angela round for dinner. Michael shows them the bedroom and the cute little cot at the end of the double bed and that's where he sleeps, I was crying laughing the first time I saw that. So many good scenes in that episode.
This is a well written show even after Steve Carrell left I still thoroughly enjoyed every episode but Michael Scott character was just brilliant and added that extra to those seasons.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
My Review from the Loo
You know that feeling when you're bursting for the toilet, I mean you have the sweats you're back teeth are floating, you can feel it touching the cloth but your miles from any decent place to go so you hold it and hold it. But then you get home, race to that porcelain prize.
It sits there like a gift from the gods looking all shiny and white, clean and pristine then you proceed to bomb it like a middle eastern country. You remember that feeling of relief, joy, rapture you might have even commented to yourself it doesn't get any better than this, well that might be true until you see Infinity War, it's that good
Now where's the toilet roll????
