Solomon and Gaenor (1999)
A truly memorable movie
One factor I consider in rating a movie is how vividly one remembers it years after seeing it. And not just the movie itself, I remember the experience of seeing it, and how incredibly moved I was by what was happening on the screen. I saw "Solomon and Gaenor" only once over six years ago, and it still fills me with it's powerful images and story. I have recommended it to friends on numerous occasions, not just because it's a great movie and story, but because of it's historical aspects, telling of the Orthodox Jewish community in turn of the century Ireland (or Wales, not sure), and how they got along (or didn't) with their non-Jewish neighbors. But as I said, incredibly memorable.
Gulliver's Travels (1939)
Wonderful animation and story! Bing Crosby as voice of Gulliver?
I came across this one by accident at the drug store for $1, and what a bargain! 1940's style animation - (think Casper the Friendly Ghost), with a few entertaining musical numbers. I think it's Bing Crosby doing Gulliver's voice, but didn't see his name on the credits. Some funny Lilliputians, including the King, really make this one fun to watch for the whole family. There are sword fights, and I was really intrigued by the animation for sea washing up on the beach at night. Gulliver is very life-like, replete with the shadows on his features to capture the "lighting" of the scene, which I found very striking for the time. Also, I think it's actually released in 1940, according to the credits.
