The Long Shadow (2023)
Chilling
As a former police officer who was working at the time the Yorkshire Ripper was committing his horrendous crimes my husband and I were left feeling so angry at the way some West Yorkshire police dealt with the women who were his victims. Particularly Marcella. I don't believe we dealt with victims in such a way in Hampshire. Although it was a totally different time there was no excuse. This drama pulls no punches in showing just how ignorant these male officers were. The arrogance of senior officers in their single minded pursuit of Wearside Jack. Thank goodness we now have computerised systems that would deal with a complicated case more efficiently. A shocking drama that shows multiple sides of this awful crime spree.
David Beckham: For the Love of the Game (2015)
Beckham UNICEF Ambassador
I disagree heartily with the only other review here. Beckham is never going to be a documentary maker but he is loved worldwide and uses his position to further the cause of UNICEF through football. He sets out to play a game of football with people in places that are enduring hardship of one form or another, Papua New Guinea a country that is lush for farming but people do not enjoy the efforts of their own labours they feed their children on junk food because they sell whatever they grow. Nepal, still suffering from the effects of the devastating earthquakes. So he doesn't wear proper football kit, neither do the locals, to focus on this is to entirely miss the point. It isn't a football documentary, football is a tool. 7 matches in 7 days all around the world ending at Old Trafford to raise funds for UNICEF and David's own foundation. I learnt a lot about the various locations visited and admired David for his enduring support for UNICEF and his obvious love of children.
Traces (2019)
Well produced crime drama
What a refreshing change to watch a crime drama where the various departments aren't fighting each other. Senior police officers who support their team when they come to them. No Mavericks needed because everyone works as a team, so much more like real life. This didn't detract from the story or it's excitement level. We watched the first two on tv and then had to watch the remaining episodes in one go. I sincerely hope there is more to come from this promising team.
