After the release of "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" in 1991, a consensus began to form among Trekkies as to which Trek movie was the best. Most fans agreed that the even-numbered films -- "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home," and "Country" -- were the good ones, while the odd-numbered film -- "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock," and "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" -- were the bad ones. This is arguably an unfair assessment, although "Final Frontier" is still often considered the worst in the series, and "Voyage Home" remains one of the most popular.
Indeed, "Voyage Home," even when not adjusted for inflation, remains the most financially successful "Star Trek" movie released before 2009. This might seem unusual to a 21st-century eye, as "Voyage Home" was a fish-out-of-water time travel comedy and not a revenge-motivated action flick.

More than two decades after first playing Wolverine, Hugh Jackman has finally put on the yellow spandex. Jackman and co-star Ryan Reynolds shared a first look at the duo from Deadpool 3 Monday, with the photo including Jackman wearing the classic costume from the comics for the first time.
The yellow costume (which was immortalized in the ‘90s animated series) has long been joked about in the X-Men features. In the original 2000 film, Wolverine complains about the black leather suits the team wears, to which Cyclops (James Marsden) quips, “What would you prefer, yellow spandex?” In 2013’s The Wolverine, a deleted scene showed off Logan getting the yellow suit in a briefcase, though he doesn’t put it on.
Reynolds and Jackman shared the Deadpool 3 image via Instagram stories, and the official Deadpool account shared a high-res version (below).

A third “Hocus Pocus” film is officially in development, Walt Disney Pictures president Sean Bailey has confirmed.
In a profile with The New York Times, Bailey stated that “Yes, ‘Hocus Pocus 3’ is happening” when discussing additional upcoming live-action projects in development at the company.
“Hocus Pocus 3” comes after the success of the 2022 sequel “Hocus Pocus 2,” which saw Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy reprise their children-hungry witching roles. The sequel broke records amongst the Nielson Top 10 streaming charts, taking home the largest opening weekend with 2.7 billion minutes viewed following its Sept. 30 premiere. The Disney+ movie also became the most watched original film for Disney+ over the frame of the first three days of release.
Though not all original “Hocus Pocus” characters were featured in “Hocus Pocus 2,” screenwriter Jen D’Angelo hinted at a potential sequel that would showcase Omri Katz’s Max Dennison and Vinessa Shaw’s Allison Watts.

The Sanderson sisters are back – again. In the first footage of “Hocus Pocus 2,” they’re looking to take the stage.
Once again, Winifred (Bette Midler), Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Mary (Kathy Najimy) have magically returned on Halloween thanks to a Salem resident lighting the Black Flame Candle. This time, a young girl named Becca (played by Whitney Peak) is the culprit. Becca is coming up on her 16th birthday, which, according to Sam Richardson’s magic store owner Gilbert, is the milestone at which new witches receive their powers. So while the young Dani Dennison (Thora Birch) faked being a witch back in the original “Hocus Pocus,” it appears that our hero could be the real thing this round. She’s certainly at least interested in toying with witchcraft.
You can watch the full teaser trailer for “Hocus Pocus 2” in the video above.

In what should come as no surprise, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are coming back for the Disney+ sequel Hocus Pocus 2 as the wicked Sanderson Sisters. It’s interesting that the studio continues to keep this title for its streaming service as opposed to theaterical; the sequel set for a 2022 debut: Back in October, during the pandemic, Disney re-released the movie to notable results in the marketplace, seeing close to $5M from a handful of theaters, this despite the fact that the movie was also airing on TV at the same time.

The film will premiere exclusively on Disney+ in 2022.
“Hocus Pocus 2” will begin production this fall under the direction of Anne Fletcher, who is taking over directing responsibilities from her friend and colleague Adam Shankman, with Lynn Harris (“The Shallows”) serving as producer. 2000’s X-Men has just turned twenty. The movie set the template for the modern superhero pic by staying close to the original comic books, bringing together a highly regarded ensemble cast and featuring a witty and fast-paced script. Several events have already marked the film’s 20th birthday, including a Zoom call reuniting the cast (albeit crashed by Ryan Reynolds), but there’s also a dark side to all this, laid out in a new article by The Hollywood Reporter.
It exposes director Bryan Singer’s bad behavior on the set of both X-Men and X2: X-Men United. The most serious allegation is that Singer offered young men auditions and roles in X-Men in exchange for sex, with questions raised over the unknown Alex Burton being cast as Pyro. But even beyond that, there’s a litany of examples of Singer’s erratic direction, including “late arrivals to the set,...

Bryan Singer may already be widely associated with controversy regarding his on-set behavior and extracurricular “activities,” but a lengthy exposé published today by THR has shed more unseemly light on the array of accusations about him and the culture of abuse and negligence that the director purportedly perpetuated. One such detail centers on a breaking point reached by the X-Men cast.
According to the report, the cast of 2003’s X2: X-Men United had a consequential confrontation with Singer centered on his erratic, frequently-absent and narcotics-addled tenure over the sequel’s Vancouver production, which apparently resulted in the franchise’s breakout star, Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman, being injured in a stunt that should not have been shot that day. It seems as if the groundbreaking, $269 million global success of 2000’s original X-Men magnified Singer’s proclivities, which resulted in an unfortunate osmosis to members of the crew during the X2 shoot,...

A new Hollywood Reporter article about director Bryan Singer’s behavior during the making of the “X-Men” films reveals the main cast, including Hugh Jackman and Halle Berry, threatened to quit the superhero sequel “X2: X-Men United” following a stunt gone wrong. Sources present during the filming of the comic book tentpole told THR that the stunt was performed ahead of schedule and while Singer and other members of the crew were “incapacitated after taking a narcotic.”
“X-Men” producer Tom DeSanto allegedly called for production to be halted after learning Singer was incapacitated as he “became fearful that someone on set could be injured.” Sources told THR that Singer “was defiant and continued shooting.” An injury occurred during a scene set on the X-Jet that featured all of the main cast except Ian McKellen. The scene in question was supposed to be filmed the following day. Bumping the scene ahead...

The comic book movie is still the most popular and lucrative in the industry, and while every now and again a couple of box office bombs in a row have people thinking the bubble is about to burst, we’re now two decades in and superheroes are arguably more popular than ever. The continued success of the genre can be traced directly back to Bryan Singer’s X-Men, which undid much of the damage done by Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin while still managing to feature roughly the same amount of leather.
Arriving just a year after The Matrix when tight-fitting leather jumpsuits and wire-assisted martial arts were all the rage, 2000’s X-Men featured plenty of both and while some fans weren’t happy with the lack of comic-accurate costumes, general audiences didn’t seem to mind, as the movie turned out to be a huge hit that gave...

His days of chomping on cigars and calling people “bub” may be over, but Hugh Jackman still likes to reminisce about his time playing Wolverine in Fox’s X-Men universe. Case in point: the Australian actor shared a throwback Bts image on his Instagram account recently, giving a shout-out to two unsung members of the crew in the process.
The snap sees Jackman in costume, complete with Adamantium claws, on set of X-Men: The Last Stand. On either side of him are producer Ralph Winter and assistant director Lee Cleary. “Two unsung heroes of the early years,” Jackman wrote in his caption. “Ralph Winter and Lee Cleary.”

It’s fitting that Jackman should be reflecting on those people who made the X-Men franchise what it was, as that same franchise recently ended.

Robert Heinlein’s frighteningly brilliant sci-fi horror concept spawned an entire generation of biological invasions from outer space. Stuart Orme’s faithful, authorized adaptation has a lot going for it, including sensationally good, gloppy special makeup effects, and a commanding performance from a dour, authoritative Donald Sutherland.

It has taken 35 years for Tami Oldham’s compelling survival-at-sea story to make it to the movies, but as I say in my video review (click the link above to watch), it was worth the wait. Sure we have seen similar kinds of stories like this, where one person must face the odds alone against Mother Nature, but when it is well done, as this one is, it is worth taking the voyage.
At 23, Tami (Shailene Woodley) gets the opportunity to sail a yacht from Tahiti to California with her boyfriend Richard Sharp (Sam Claflin), but the vessel rides directly into the eye of a horrendous hurricane and she must find a way for her and the injured and virtually immobile Sharp to survive against all odds alone at sea on a crippled boat. Oldham’s memoir has been brought to the screen in high dramatic fashion by director Baltasar Kormakur, who lets his heavy-action-movie past subside to tell the story as largely a romantic drama set against the unpredictability of nature. It is tough to pull this kind of thing off since in real life their boat drifted for 41 days and that can get kind of monotonous. A key story device involving the injured boyfriend helps, but Kormakur and screenwriters Aaron Kendall, Jordan Kendall and David Branson Smith also find to way to weave in and out of flashbacks in a structure that not only fills in the details of the romantic relationship that flowers in Tahiti but also in leading up to their catastrophe on the open water. The film is able to build suspense based on anticipation of what will happen even after initially opening with the aftermath of the storm, which then leads into the first of the flashbacks. A couple of unexpected twists help enormously.
It also is admirable that the director ruled out shooting the many water sequences in a tank, filming instead on real open-water locations off Fiji and New Zealand. He has much experience and fondness for these kinds of stories, especially a previous sea-survivor film, The Deep, which became Iceland’s Oscar entry in 2012. Clearly he loves putting his actors through the ringer.
With that in mind we can be thankful it has Woodley throwing herself hook, line and sinker into perhaps her most challenging role yet and emerging triumphant. Yes, the romantic angle between her and Claflin smacks of the kind of thing Ya novels thrive on. But this is no Ya story — rather it’s one of courage, fortitude and the will to survive. It takes awhile to get fully to that point, but when it sinks in, Woodley is there to guide us all the way. As Tami, she is a young woman who grew up with a love and special knack for navigating uncharted waters, and Woodley captures that passion effortlessly. Claflin’s character, who gets severely injured during the hurricane, has far less to do in driving the action, but he’s clearly there for eye candy for the large female audience this film is aimed at.
Adrift has been gorgeously photographed by the great cinematographer Robert Richardson, and his experience shows every step of the way. The CGI’d hurricane also is impressively done but is saved largely until the end. This is more a character study of a woman fighting nature and using everything she has in her to do it. Producers are Kormakur, the Kandell brothers, Woodley and Ralph Winter. Stx releases it today.
Do you plan to see Adrift? Let us know what you think.

The Toronto International Film Festival is right around the corner, with new titles being added to their lineup every week. One very special film that was just included under the Galas section is Terry George’s “The Promise,” which will be making its world premiere at the festival.
Starring Oscar Isaac as Michael, a humble Armenian apothecary who leaves his village to study medicine in cosmopolitan Constantinople, the drama follows him during the Armenian genocide. Christian Bale also co-stars as Chris, an American photojournalist who has come to the country to partly cover the geopolitics and is in a relationship with the talented Ana (Charlotte Le Bon), a Paris-educated, Armenian artist. The first images of “The Promise” were revealed by the Tiff website, and you can take a look at them below.

Home Video fans have a lot to look forward to as Paramount Home Entertainment releases a variety of Star Trek material this year. First up and arriving Tuesday, just days after its 34th anniversary is Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Director’s Cut. This is the first time director Nicholas Meyer’s version of the now-classic film is available on Blu-ray.
There’s little left to say about just how good the film is and looking back, we can easily see the affection both cast and crew put into the production. There was a gamble in bringing in Harve Bennett to produce and Meyer to direct only because neither had been a part of Trek previously and Paramount needed the film to be a major success to salvage the franchise.
Thankfully, Bennett understand the genre and Meyer was a gifted novelist and filmmaker so got down to the core elements.
