As with any time I try to explain a massive figure in Indian film to the uninitiated, the temptation rises quickly to compare director Sanjay Leela Bhansali to someone in Hollywood.
And, as with any time I actually make these comparisons, everything falls short. Bhansali depicts spectacle evocative of the work of Baz Luhrmann, but even that is a pale imitation (no disrespect to either). There is no one literally anywhere in the world creating cinema with the scale and grandeur that Bhansali has cultivated as his signature, a style so distinct that his own peers pay homage to it while he’s still alive and working.
But at the top of IndieWire’s conversation about Bhansali’s career, he’s quick to shake the larger-than-life visual splendor of his creations, emphasizing — as writer, director and producer, among his many hats — that the stories themselves evoke that scope.

Anupamaa’ star Rupali Ganguly’s decision to join the Bjp and enter politics makes her the newest addition to a galaxy of women celebrities from Mumbai’s entertainment world who have taken the political plunge in the tradition of Nargis Dutt and Vyjayanthimala Bali. Who are the others still active in politics, albeit with mixed lucky? Here’s a list:
Dipika Chikhlia Topiwala: Best known for playing Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s show ‘Ramayan’, Chikhlia was the first of the then new-generation TV stars to pursue a political career, albeit briefly. She was elected MP from Baroda on a Bjp ticket in 1991.
On the big screen, Chikhlia made her Hindi cinema debut as lead in ‘Sun Meri Laila’, cast opposite Raj Kiran, in 1983, and later acted in films with Rajesh Khanna at a time when he had long ceased to be a superstar.

In his over half-a-century-long Hindi film career, he sang more than a thousand songs, but just three serve to demonstrate his position in the industry’s scheme of things – the madcap “Ek Chatur Naar” where Kishore Kumar beats him; the enchanting qawwali “Na to karvaan ki talash hai” where Mohammed Rafi emerges triumphant eventually; and the classical contest “Ketaki gulab juhi”, where he beats Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
This was part of the misfortune of Prabodh Chandra ‘Manna’ Dey, born on this day (May 1) in 1919 in Calcutta. His classical training, innate talent, and “masculine” voice made him perfect for all shades of songs – romantic (including those for the vintage-aged), folk ballads, philosophical musings, and more, but he was never deemed a top-notch singer.
A nephew of gifted blind singer-composer Krishna Chandra Dey, who paved his way into music and films, Manna Dey’s forte was challenging, classical-based songs, especially those that his contemporaries considered difficult,...

Shekhar Suman Defends Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Anger Issues! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known for his larger-than-life universes. Whether Devdas, Gangubai Kathiawadi, or Bajirao Mastani, his films have mesmerized us with their grandeur and exceptional storytelling. He’s all set to treat us to his periodic series, Heeramandi. Shekhar Suman, a part of the cast, is defending Slb’s anger issues.
Fans and cine-goers are aware Bhansali is a perfectionist. He takes his craft very seriously and expects perfect execution from his actors. Rumors have previously suggested that Inshallah got shelved because Salman Khan wanted to cast his own set of actors, and the ace director was not okay with that. None of the sides budged, eventually shelving the Alia Bhatt co-starrer.
Shekhar Suman defends Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s short temper!

New Delhi, April 14 (Ians) Her influence persists in Bollywood even after her name has faded from public memory, althrough remixes of her rollicking hits from the 1950s continue to be in circulation. Another, and not that well-known, legacy of Shamshad Begum, though, was initiating what later became “item numbers”, though her contributions were more perky than provocative, saucy than raunchy, and racy without being ribald.
And then, they were delivered in a robust voice, whose clarity was compared to a temple bell by composer O.P. Nayyar, with a full-blown gusto and sense of abandon.
“Udan khatole pe udh jaaun”, “Mere piya gaye Rangoon”, “Kabhi aar kabhi paar”, “Bisvi sadi hai ye bisvii sadi”, “Leke pehla pehla pyar”, “Kahin pe nigahen kahin pe nishana”, and “Boojh mera kya naam re” are prime examples.

Amitabh Bachchan Celebrates Holi With His Family ( Photo Credit – Twitter )
Holi is a festival that cannot be complete without three iconic songs – Rang Barse Bheege Chunar Waali, Holi Khele Raghuveera, and Khaike Paan Banaras Wala. “The Crown” could well bow out in style on home soil, with the final outing of the show leading the list of nominees for the 2024 BAFTA TV and TV Craft awards, announced Wednesday.
Netflix’s hit royal drama — which came to an end last year after six seasons — landed eight nominations in total, including for Dominic West, Elizabeth Debecki, Lesley Manville and Salim Daw in the performance categories. However, it missed out for drama series (an award it has been nominated for three times previously).
Just behind “The Crown” and also a Netflix production, the apocalyptic “Black Mirror” episode “Demon 79” earned seven nominations, including limited drama and leading actress for Anjana Vasan.
Further down in a tight group of frontrunners, BBC dramas “Happy Valley” and “The Sixth Commandment and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” each have six nominations. Sarah Lancashire’s leading actress nomination for “Happy Valley” could see...

All Ryan Gosling needed was a 40-piece orchestra, 62 dancing Kens, over 24 gigantic Barbie heads, four “cameo Kens” and a Guns N’Roses surprise to turn his highly anticipated performance of “Barbie” track “I’m Just Ken” into one of the most unbelievable moments in award show history.
After all the protracted speculation about whether Gosling would perform “I’m Just Ken” at the Oscars, the news broke in late February that he had been confirmed for a song and dance extravaganza. But in fact, Oscars producers had been talking to Gosling for months.
“Ryan Gosling is a true professional, that man — we met with him on Zooms months ago, talking about that performance,” said Molly McNearney, who produced the show with Raj Kapoor, Katy Mullan and Rob Paine. “Greta Gerwig weighed in creatively as well. He was so committed to it. His choreographer, Mandy Moore, is exceptional — she was on all the calls.

Oscars producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan did their best to make this the “Barbie” Oscars. And, in some ways, the participation of Ryan Gosling, Billie Eilish, and America Ferrera assisted in that effort. But considering the blockbuster won only one Academy Award (Original Song), the telecast organically shifted its focus to two other global hits, “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things,” which won seven and four Oscars respectively.

I’m going to begin with a confession: I like to think of myself as both a decent son — Hi, Mom! — and an Anglophile, but before tonight, I’d gone 40-something years of my life without realizing that the British had a different Mother’s Day.
Or maybe I’ve known and forgotten? Either way, it was impossible to forget during Sunday (March 10) night’s telecast of the 96th Academy Awards, in which U.K. Mother’s Day got more onstage references than Gaza, Ukraine and Donald Trump combined.
It wasn’t that politics were wholly absent in the telecast, but a decree seemed to have gone around that the two highest-profile international tragedies of the moment could be addressed once apiece, both effectively.
Jonathan Glazer used his Zone of Interest international feature win to echo the film’s message on dehumanization in declaring, “Whether the victims of October the...

Looks like fourth time is truly a charm for Jimmy Kimmel and the Academy Awards.
Back hosting the Oscars for the second year in a row and the fourth time overall, the ABC Late Night front man took a show where most of the big winners were pretty predictable and gave it some much needed bite. “See kids, sometimes smoking is fine,” Kimmel quipped after Da’Vine Joy Randolph won her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her cigarette imbibing role in The Holdovers.
Sometimes kids, it’s worth packing a punch — as the Academy Awards proved Sunday.

The 2024 Academy Awards are officially upon us, and after a stellar year of standout films, it’s high time we celebrate the return of cinema.
Blockbusters like Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” are poised as fan favorites, with IndieWire’s awards editor Anne Thompson predicting that “Oppenheimer” will go the way of 2023 Best Picture winner “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and sweep many of the core awards categories.
Indies such as “American Fiction,” “Past Lives,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” and “The Zone of Interest” round out the diverse films being recognized by the Academy. Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Alexander Payne’s “The Holdovers” also mark auteur returns to the annual awards ceremony, with actress Lily Gladstone and Da’Vine Joy Randolph from the respective features expected to take home acting titles of Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress on March 10.

The Academy Awards are finally (almost) here, sending off the spectacular cinematic year of 2023 with bang.
The 2024 Oscars will take place tonight, with Jimmy Kimmel returning to host. This year’s crop of contenders range from “Barbie” to “Oppenheimer,” “American Fiction” to “The Holdovers,” and “Anatomy of a Fall” to “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
While certain categories seem to have a sure frontrunner — like Lily Gladstone in the Best Actress race for her performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer” star Robert Downey Jr. as Best Supporting Actor, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Best Supporting Actress for “The Holdovers” — others are thoroughly a toss-up in terms of predictions.

If everything old really is new again, the creative team behind Sunday’s 96th Academy Awards from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood is hoping that putting forward some of the choices from past Oscar ceremonies will prove inspired this time around as well. During a virtual press conference this week with executive producer and showrunner Raj Kapoor, exec producers Molly McNearney (also host Jimmy Kimmel’s wife) and Katy Mullan, and music director Rickey Minor, they pointed to a few new wrinkles this time around – the most significant of which repeats a brainchild that drew raves during the first and only time it was attempted in 2009. That would be the introduction of each nominee in all four acting categories individually by a past winner.

There are plenty of people who will likely tune in late for the 2024 Oscars as the show has an earlier start time this year!
The ceremony will begin at 7pm Et / 4pm Et, instead of the usual airtime of 8pm Et / 5pm Pt.
If you want to see host Jimmy Kimmel‘s monologue, make sure to get to your TVs earlier than you have in the past for the Academy Awards.
So, why the earlier start time?

“I mean, I think it’s just the constant evolution of the show. We have a lot of discussions of how the show can continue to evolve. This, I think, came across because we wanted people on the East Coast to be able to see the end of the show. We know that they are watching it much later,” executive producer Raj Kapoor told Deadline.

Oscar producers Raj Kapoor, Katy Mullan, Molly McNearney and Rob Paine, as well as music director Rickey Minor are days away from the 96th Academy Awards.
But they took time out on Wednesday afternoon to share insight into what to expect from Sunday’s ceremony. In a conversation moderated by Jacqueline Coley, Awards Editor at Rotten Tomatoes, Kapoor said this year’s theme is “human connection, emotion, inspiration and creativity.”
A major highlight that has both fans and producers excited is the news of five former winners presenting to the five nominees. The idea was inspired by Bill Condon when he produced the 81st Academy Awards. Kapoor said the team had done a deep dive into past ceremonies and that stuck with them the most. Said Kapoor, “It was this lovely storytelling and again it came down to connection. It was past winners speaking to present nominees and that lovely connection and that human interaction.

It is crunch time for Raj Kapoor, Katy Mullan, and Molly McNearney, the three Executive Producers of the 96th Annual Academy Awards. As they are putting final touches in place for what they hope will be a show that honors not just this year’s crop of movies but also Hollywood’s and Oscar’s rich history, the trio are planning a ceremony that excites viewers to the point of keeping the recent post-pandemic ratings rise rising.
All indications are good that this could be a banner year, ratings wise, for the Oscars, particularly with the potency and popularity of this year’s Best Picture contenders, most notably the dual phenomenon of summer blockbusters Barbie and front-runner Oppenheimer (aka Barbenheimer) which have 21 nominations between them. As host Jimmy Kimmel told me earlier this week, viewers will have actually seen this year’s movies and have a rooting interest in the outcome.

As the Oscars continue to evolve under the watch of Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang, a new trio of executive producers have been tasked with making Hollywood’s biggest night one that millions of viewers will remember.
Though showrunner Raj Kapoor and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” head writer Molly McNearney are no strangers to producing the Academy Awards, having worked on last year’s broadcast, this year Kramer and Yang bypassed 2023 Oscar producers Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner in favor of their own homegrown team.
“There is no expectation that you continually work on the show, because things change and evolve,” said five-year Oscar show veteran Kapoor to IndieWire during a Zoom joined by his new colleagues. “This is the next evolution, the three of us coming together. We are the trifecta this year.”

The 2024 Academy Awards have two timing concerns. For one, the show is airing an hour earlier than its historic slot — kicking off at 7 p.m. Et and 4 p.m. on the West Coast. ABC’s March 10 live telecast also coincides with the “spring forward” of the first day of Daylight Savings, further confusing matters for viewers in the vast majority of the U.S..
So when telecast showrunner Raj Kapoor and fellow executive producers Molly McNearney and Katy Mullan hopped on Zoom earlier this week, they were happy to talk about everything from crisis plans to “in memoriam” pressure, that Barbie promo and the inherent foolishness of trying to engineer a viral moment. But they were also really keen to remind Oscar fans about that new time slot.
Ok, we’re just a few days out. Is any part of you a little worried that people still haven’t gotten...
