How does one create a film festival during an actors strike? Middleburg Film Festival executive director Susan Koch explains she’s approached programming the Virginia fest in the same manner as she has always done. “We looked for the strongest films and a wide range of films that represent diverse voices and ones we feel will expand our view of the world,” she tells Variety.
Now in its 11th year, the festival continues to be a carefully curated weekend of films and conversations, including many of the year’s buzziest titles. “Rustin,” a Netflix biopic of civil rights activist Bayard Rustin that was directed by George C. Wolfe, will open the four-day fest. Wolfe will receive the festival’s Impact Award for his work in bringing the impactful civil and LGBTQ rights story to the screen. Searchlight’s “Poor Things” and A24’s “Priscilla” are also among films screening from Oct.

Here’s the downside to having an Oscar shortlist: Completely sidelining great contenders so early in the season.
One oversight by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Music branch this year was the “sexy and dangerous” original score, as the pic’s composer Isabella Summers puts it, of Netflix’s feature take on D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover.
And, yes, per Summers, Florence and the Machine is still together. As the British musician-turned-composer explains today on Crew Call, she was coming off a tour and got the chance to supply a song to indie pic Assassination Nation.
From there she was encouraged to make her foray into scoring, first working with Mark Isham on the Hulu limited series Little Fires Everywhere, on which they notched an Emmy nom for original dramatic limited series score. Lady Chatterley’s Lover is the first of four film scores by Summers to be unveiled.

Branford Marsalis, Thomas Newman, Howard Shore, and Kris Bowers — what do they have in common, besides each being an accomplished composer, conductor, and/or recording artist in his own right? Within the past four years, they all produced a film score that didn’t even register as a blip on the Oscar radar. “Let Them All Talk” and “Pieces of a Woman” gained zero traction for 15-time Oscar nominee Newman and three-time “The Lord of the Rings” Oscar winner Shore. Bowers and Marsalis had respectively picked up momentum elsewhere on the awards circuit for “Green Book” (the eventual Best Picture winner) and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” (the eventual Best Makeup and Hairstyling winner), yet those two films’ Oscar fortunes couldn’t do anything to boost their chances in Best Original Score.

Celebrating its 10th year as a major east coast destination for cinema lovers, the Middleburg Film Festival, held in scenic Middleburg, Virginia from October 13th to 16th, continues to highlight an outstanding selection of titles while presenting informative special events and forums. “We’re extremely excited because this year is a true milestone, and it’s a chance to celebrate how far we’ve come as a group, and to celebrate all of the filmmakers who have helped to make the festival a success. We cater to true cinephiles, so it’s not unusual for people to see 10 films over the course of the weekend. And because the festival draws a great mix of Washington DC influencers and people in the film industry, there’s lots of tremendous insight being shared before and after screenings,” says Susan Koch, Executive Director.

The Middleburg Film Festival in Northern Virginia kicks off on October 13 for four days. It first took place in 2013, back when founder Sheila Johnson took some advice from the Sundance Kid himself — Robert Redford – who thought the Salamander Resort would be a good place to hold an annual celebration of cinema. This year marks its 10th anniversary.
The black comedy “White Noise” opens the festival. Writer/director Noah Baumbach will be feted with the 10th Anniversary Spotlight Filmmaker Award. He adapted Don DeLillo’s novel of the same name and his film version stars Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig. Baumbach screened his Oscar-winning film “Marriage Story,” which also starred Driver, at the fest in 2019.

Director Kevin Reynolds’ graphic, gritty desert combat movie is about a lost tank in the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. Besides being 98 an unpleasant downer, it now reminds us that we got into the exact same fix just a decade after the Russkis threw in the towel. Cruel Russki soldiers commit atrocities against vengeful Moujahedin resistance, and there’s really nobody to root for. George Dzundza, Jason Patric, Steven Bauer and Stephen Baldwin endure a rough ordeal out in the dirt, hoping for the next war movie breakthrough hit.

The number and range of superstars vying for Emmys this year – everyone from Kanye West and 50 Cent to Mick Jagger and Imagine Dragons – is staggering.
More than 600 entries in the seven Emmy music categories were unveiled today as voting began for the nominations round. Nominations will be announced by the Television Academy on July 12.
The most star-studded category is that of best song. “Euphoria” star Zendaya and composer Labrinth, who won Emmys for the series in 2020, have entered two songs from this past season as co-writers and could score again given the huge popularity of the HBO series. Labrinth has also entered in the series-score category.
Country stars Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert are up for songs in “Nine Perfect Strangers” and “Queer Eye,” respectively. Music docs are included too, as Sheryl Crow has entered a song from the new Showtime documentary on her life and Mary J. Blige...

Mark Mothersbaugh, of Devo as well as scoring fame, was five-times rewarded for “Dirty John,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” “The Willoughbys,” “The Croods: A New Age” and “Tiger King.”
Mark Isham’s four awards came for “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Honest Thief,” “Little Fires Everywhere” and “Togo.”

“It’s such a wide spectrum of emotion that goes through the story,” explains composer Mark Isham of “The Nevers.” Indeed, the HBO drama crosses the boundaries of many genres to tell a science fiction laced epic within its Victorian era setting. The acclaimed composer wanted to hint at elements of sorrow, danger, and magic in his score, to reflect a show that carries a “general sense of mysteriousness.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Viewers don’t have to wait long before becoming immersed in Isham’s sonic landscape. The pilot episode begins with an extended wordless montage where the major characters of “The Nevers” are introduced. “It took me a little while just to get over the sheer terror of a challenge like that,” Isham admits. By 1983, Rickie Lee Jones had had her share of surreal experiences. Her debut album, 1979’s Rickie Lee Jones, had transformed her into America’s leading boho pop star, thanks to its hit “Chuck E.’s in Love.” She’d made the cover of Rolling Stone, and her followup record, 1981’s Pirates, was one of the most critically acclaimed albums of that year. She was also in an on-again, off-again relationship with fellow songwriter Tom Waits and had begun using heroin.
In the summer of 1983, at age 28, Jones’ life appeared to be settling down.

There was something about that haunting melody of jazz legend Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s “The Inflated Tear” that spoke to director Shaka King. It just captured what he was reaching for with “Judas and the Black Messiah,” his film about Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya) and informant William O’Neal (Lakeith Stanfield) who helped the FBI murder the Black Panther leader.
“I was bringing that song, ‘Inflated Tear,’ into pitch meetings,” said King when he was guest on the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “[Executive producer] Ryan [Coogler] was like, ‘You really want to play that for the studio?’”
King is very familiar with how off-putting Kirk’s screeching saxophone can be for some people. After one test screening, it was decided the track wouldn’t stay in the film unless it was warmed up with a contrabass clarinet. But King, initially, wasn’t bringing the track to distributors because he intended to actually use it in his film.

As far as feature-length directorial debuts go, one would be hard-pressed to identify one as impressive and awe-inspiring as Shaka King’s tour-de-force Judas and the Black Messiah. The film is as effortlessly entertaining as it is mesmerizing at every turn. That, along with outstanding performances from Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield, easily make Judas and the Black Messiah one of the best films of the year.

A movie about a not so distant past that speaks directly to the present, director Shaka King’s blazing sophomore feature “Judas and the Black the Messiah” — premiering at Sundance and coming to theaters and HBO Max later this month — is a radical work on the final days of Chicago Black Panther leader Fred Hampton, made within the not-so-daring apparatus of a Hollywood studio. That it was conceived within those creative walls and still breathes freely as non-conformist art makes it all the more invigorating.
Preaching armed revolution over placating reform, Hampton (here embodied by Daniel Kaluuya) skipped sugarcoated platitudes. And for the composers of “Ammonite,” “The Invisible Man,” “Soul” and “The Little Things,” the odds were definitely in your favor.

The music branch has been notorious for high-profile disqualifications and ineligibilities in the last few years. Last week, the BAFTA Awards website released a draft of what films are eligible for the upcoming show, set to take place on April 11, with nominations being announced on March 9. The list notes a film’s eligibility during the newly revamped round one voting period, which began on Jan. 12 and will conclude on Jan. 26.
The British Academy provided a roadmap of the musical scores that are not eligible for the Academy Awards and should not be expected for the shortlist announcement of 15, scheduled for Feb. 9.
The biggest contender that will be missing is “One Night in Miami” by composer Terence Blanchard. Distributed by Amazon Studios and directed by Academy Award winner Regina King, the film was seen as a major hopeful for the veteran musician, who received his first nomination for 2018’s “BlacKkKlansman.” To be eligible for the BAFTAs,...

Long in the making sequels have been having a bit of a moment in Hollywood over the last handful of years. Properties long since thought dormant have come back to life, sometimes to great success. Now, Bill & Ted Face the Music hopes to be the latest IP to do so, with this newest effort nearly 30 years after Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (not to mention over three decades since the initial outing in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure). The franchise always leaned on creativity, but that’s in short supply here. This likely conclusion to the misadventures of the title character best friends is fan service and fan service alone, but everyone seems to know that the joke has more than worn thin. Hitting screens today, it’s a huge disappointment. The movie is the second sequel and third installment in the Bill & Ted series. Once upon a time, William “Bill” S.

As Emmy voting draws to a close, the 2020 music nominations span rookies to regulars. Martin Phipps landed his sixth nomination overall for the dramatic score to Netflix’s “The Crown.” Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and his scoring partner Atticus Ross nabbed a nomination for their first series, HBO’s “Watchmen.” Emmy fave “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” grabbed another music supervision nom, while composers Thomas Mizer and Curtis Moore landed their first for music and lyrics.

It took ample trial and error for composers Mark Isham and Isabella Summers to get to the heart of Little Fires Everywhere.
Created by Liz Tigelaar, the Hulu miniseries centers on a Shaker Heights matriarch and her family whose lives are upended, when a mysterious mother and daughter come into town. The drama called for a score that would “capture the essence of these women,” Summers says, who had become completely entangled with one another. “We had an intellectual description in mind. We wanted to embrace big rock drums, chamber strings. Burning piano had become a sound,” Isham adds. “I literally have a sample of a piano that’s been set on fire, which seemed apocryphal and cool.”
But to translate intellectual understanding into an emotional, sonic experience, the pair first had to learn how to work as collaborators. One of the driving forces behind English indie rock band Florence and the Machine,...

Pharrell Willliams, Labrinth (pictured) and Isabella Summers of Florence & The Machine could all wind up with Emmys this year. So, for that matter, could Ingrid Michaelson, Nine Inch Nails founder Trent Reznor and veteran pop producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.
All were among nominees in the music categories as the Television Academy announced the nominations for the 72nd annual Primetime Emmy Awards for work in TV during the 2019-20 season.
This year’s crop was the most diverse in memory. More than one-fourth of all the music nominees are people of color, and more than half are first-time nominees for television’s highest honor.
Said Academy governor Rickey Minor, who’s nominated twice this year for his music direction of “The Oscars” and “The Kennedy Center Honors”: “Living through this time in our history, has made us all awaken to the truth that we — as a humanity — are all the same.

Howard Franklin’s absorbing tale of the New York underworld is told from the point of view of a night-prowling shutterbug who documents life on the streets, from the swanky nightclubs to gangland killings on the cold sidewalks. Joe Pesci has his most endearing role in a part suggested by the famous photographer Weegee, a small man with artistic ambitions for his ‘found photos’ of party revelers and bloody corpses. Is Barbara Hershey’s club owner using him for selfish purposes? What happens if the hoods suddenly regard him as a hindrance, instead of a boost to their egos? The colorful production elicits a richly atmospheric image of New York in wartime. The biggest surprise: Pesci’s dialogue is all PG-rated! (The movie itself is an ‘R’.) With David Gianapoulos, Jared Harris, Stanley Tucci and Jerry Adler.

Is Mary Ramos, the woman Quentin Tarantino praised as “the unsung hero of my filmography,” staging a takeover of TV music supervision, too? Ramos is a television newbie, but made up for lost time by shaping the soundtracks to two of the year’s most binge-worthy limited series, “Mrs. America” and “Little Fires Everywhere,”working with former Tarantino producers Stacey Sher (“Pulp Fiction”) on the former and Pilar Savone (“Django Unchained”) on the latter.
After a three-decade career in movies, what was the biggest surprise about working in TV for the first time?

The Cannes Film Festival may be off this year, but its Marché du Film is up and running virtually. Monday’s sessions included a “Meet & Listen” conversation with award-winning composer Mark Isham, who revealed that he scored the music to “Bill & Ted Face the Music” remotely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking to Variety‘s Jon Burlingame, Isham explained: “I was fortunate in that the films I was working on wrapped principal photography, and ‘Bill and Ted’ was done remotely using an orchestra in Budapest. It was assembled all with a mix studio.” All resourcefulness aside, Isham said he misses the live experience more than anything — not just in his work. “That’s a big loss, the lack of live music,” he added. “It’s taken a toll on everyone, the musicians and the culture.”

The Hulu limited series “Little Fires Everywhere” is the latest women-centered TV adaptation of an addictive novel, in this case written by Celeste Ng. Kerry Washington stars as Mia Warren, a single mom with a 16-year-old daughter who rents an apartment from Elena Richardson (Reese Witherspoon), an influential woman in the affluent, seemingly progressive town of Shaker Heights, Ohio. Taking place in the ’90s, the series tackles difficult conversations about race, privilege and motherhood, showing both how far we’ve come but also how little has changed in our societal politics over the years. Scroll down for our exclusive video interviews with some of the top Emmy contenders from the show.
“Little Fires Everywhere” also gives insight into Mia and Elena’s children and how they handle growing up. Mia’s daughter, Pearl (Lexi Underwood), is fiercely loyal but is also drawn to the comfort and security of the Richardson household.

Emmy-winning composer Mark Isham infused a pop sensibility into his score for the Hulu limited series “Little Fires Everywhere,” which stars Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington. Composing the score with Florence + the Machine’s Isabella Summers, the pair blended their individual backgrounds to create something fresh. “There’s a lot of intricate string writing which is part of my background but there’s a very pop sensibility to the whole thing at the same time which she brought to it and then of course just fabulous drums and percussion,” Isham says in an exclusive new webchat with Gold Derby. “A great song, a great pop moment, is a very simple idea.” Watch the video interview above.

The Original Motion Picture Score for Blade by award-winning composer Mark Isham has been released for the first time on vinyl today and is available on VareseSarabande.com and other retailers. The LP’s jacket, inner sleeve, and labels thematically reference the infamous warehouse rave scene of the vampire thriller from 1998. “The score needed to have an epic super-hero quality but with a very dark side, and it needed to be able to live next to the world of 1990’s electronica – The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, etc. We used a large symphony orchestra supplemented with electronic synthesizers and samplers for a unique musical vocabulary. I did a lot of sampling of weird and strange sounds as well as programming my synth collection. We recorded at the Fox stage which is a wonderful room. The process went smoothly as I had worked tirelessly with Steve Norrington, the director, during the...

Ever since seeing Bloodline at the 2019 Popcorn Frights Film Festival, I've had its infectious, synth-infused soundtrack stuck in my head, as the original music by Trevor Gureckis is like its own character in the film, giving the serial killer story a deadly pulse that hearkens back to some of the most memorable collaborations between John Carpenter and Alan Howarth. Good bad movies are hard to come by, but thank goodness for director David Mahmoudieh’s “See You Soon.” He and co-writer, co-producer and leading lady Jenia Tanaeva have crafted quite possibly the best bad movie of 2019. This stupidly sweet, albeit conventional romantic drama about two downhearted souls falling in love is unabashedly unafraid to embrace fantasy and lean into cheesy, gooey sentimentality. Steamier and sleeker than a Hallmark Channel movie, but with just as many idealized scenarios, it’s “so bad, it’s good” escapism at its finest.

The 2018 Emmy nominees for music composition for a series, original dramatic score, could hardly be more diverse: the grim cliffhanger episode of a popular cable serial; a small-combo score for a Marvel Comics heroine; the series finale of a fantasy based on Disney characters; an internationally flavored episode of a freshman broadcast series; an animated “Star Wars” spinoff; and Eastern colors for a cable series that imagines a world of sword-wielding warriors. What they all have in common, though, is how they enhanced complicated tales with emotional melodies.

This year’s category, equivalent to Best Original Score at the Oscars, includes the following nominees: “Game of Thrones” (HBO), “Marvel’s Jessica Jones” (Netflix), “Once Upon a Time” (ABC), “Seal Team” (CBS), “Star Wars Rebels” (Disney Xd) and “Westworld” (HBO).

At this year’s Emmys Ramin Djawadi is nominated twice for Best Music Composition for a Series, once for the “Game of Thrones” episode “The Dragon and the Wolf” and once for the “Westworld” episode “Akane No Mai.” The composer has now been nominated a total of six times, following prior bids for “Westworld” (main title theme in 2017), “Game of Thrones” (music composition in 2014), “FlashForward” (music composition in 2010) and “Prison Break” (main title theme in 2006), but he has yet to take home the big prize. Will this finally be his year?
Djawadi is up against Sean Callery (“Marvel’s Jessica Jones”), Mark Isham, Cindy O’Connor and Michael Simon (“Once Upon a Time”), W.G. Snuffy Walden and A. Patrick Rose (“Seal Team”) and Kevin Kiner (“Star Wars Rebels”). According to our predictions, Djawadi is in first place for “Game of Thrones” with odds of 1/4 and in second place for “Westworld...

“It’s bittersweet,” admits composer Cindy O’Connor about her Emmy nomination for “Once Upon a Time.” She and fellow composer Michael D. Simon just earned their first ever nominations alongside past Emmy winner Mark Isham (“Ez Streets”), but it’s for the last ever season of the ABC fantasy series. “It’s great to get this kind of recognition,” she explains, “but it’s very sad to know that it’s not going to continue.” However, she takes solace in the show’s fan base, who have “been excited about the music all along.” Watch our exclusive video interview with O’Connor and Simon above.

This year’s Emmy race in the music categories takes on greater interest because a win in the song category could instantly give songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul an Egot, having already won Oscar, Tony and Grammy awards.
Pasek and Paul — whose “La La Land,” “Greatest Showman” and “Dear Evan Hansen” songs have catapulted them into the front ranks of American songwriters in the past two years — are nominated for their new song, “In the Market for a Miracle,” written for Fox’s “A Christmas Story Live,” an adaptation of their 2012 stage musical.
They are just two of 28 first-time nominees in the six music categories, announced Thursday morning by the Television Academy for 2017-18 programs. Nearly 60 percent of all the music nominees are newcomers to the Emmy race. Ironically, several musicians were nominated for non-music categories: Donald Glover (“Atlanta”), John Legend and Sara Bareilles all received acting nods — and...
