New Delhi, April 11 (Ians) Soon after he revolutionised Indian film music with ‘Babul mora naihar’, top classical musicians, meeting in Calcutta, decided that Ustad Faiyyaz Khan, who had sung the thumri earlier, should tie a ritual thread to K. L. Saigal to signify discipleship. The Ustad wanted to meet the singer alone first, and after an hour, someone checked to find that both, in high spirits, were insisting on calling each other their ustad.
This was revealed by santoor maestro Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who heard it from music director S. D. Burman, a disciple of top ustads then and an eyewitness, but a more attested incident is of the Ustad, doyen of the Agra Gharana, telling Saigal that he had nothing to teach him that would make him a greater singer.
Then, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, of the Kirana Gharana, visited a cinema hall for the first time only to...

His portrayals of the idiosyncratic, moustache-fanatic, and rule-imposing Bhawani Shankar or the stern Acp Dhurandhar Bhatawadekar in a brace of breezy Bollywood comedies are undeniably unforgettable, but he played a more realistic role in ‘Guddi’ – that gentle deconstruction of the glittering yet hollow edifice of filmdom.
Utpal Dutt, as Prof Gupta in the 1971 film, knows neither scolding nor advice will change the filmstar-struck teenager (then Jaya Bhaduri in her first Hindi film), and the only way out is to let her indulge in fascination with films and learn first-hand the artificiality, heartbreaks, and struggle that lies behind them.
Portraying a teacher, with innovative ideas, was not difficult for Dutt, who was born on this day (March 29) in Bengal’s Barisal (now in Bangladesh) in 1929. He had been an English teacher in (then) Calcutta’s South Point School in the 1950s and earned his students’ admiration for his insights into literature,...

New Delhi, March 1 (Ians) Women-centric movies often end up highlighting stereotypes and essentialising people who belong to different gender communities.
But if, as protagonists in a narrative, women get to focus on or are oriented towards issues that confine them to pigeonholes, and also underline their experiences, perspectives and needs, it can truly be called a gynocentric film.
After wowing cinephiles with her directorial debut in ‘Dhobi Ghaat’, Kiran Rao tells a story in ‘Laapata Ladies’ that does not necessarily define feminism, or deal with it, but it sure delights both men and women with nuggets that describe a variety of facets of our lives, including policies, media, art, and organisations that prioritise the voices and concerns of women.
Set in 2001, somewhere in rural India in a fictional place named Nirmal Pradesh (though shot in Madhya Pradesh), ‘Laapata Ladies’ (Lost Ladies) is about Phool (Nitanshi Goel) and Jaya (Pratibha Ranta...

There are a number of stories about how Gulzar, who has been awarded the 58th Jnanpith Award along with Sanskrit scholar Jagatguru Rambhadracharya, became one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated lyricists after being better known in his years as a struggler after Partition in Mumbai for his expertise in re-painting cars mauled in crashes.
The one that seems most credible, however, has come from him. Despite his skill with car colours, Gulzar’s first love was the written word and he was a regular at the Progressive Writers Association (Pwa), which was then a creative hub of just about every Titan in Hindi and Urdu literature.
It was at Pwa meetings that the undiscovered poet struck up a friendship with lyricist Shailendra, who introduced him to Bimal Roy, who, in turn, told him that he was wasting his time and talent at a car workshop.

The Beatles famously visited India with The Beach Boys’ Mike Love, Donovan, and Mia Farrow. In retrospect, Love had a lot to say about the trip through his words and through his music. Here’s a look at why these rock stars decided to go to the other side of the world.
The Beach Boys’ Mike Love said the trip to India helped The Beatles grow
During a 2023 interview with Forbes, Love said he wrote his song “Pisces Brothers” as a tribute to visiting the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison, though the song is primarily written in honor of the quiet Beatle. In the song, Love sings, “We were drawn to Rishikesh not for fortune or for fame but for enlightenment we came.”
In a 2014 article he wrote for HuffPost, Love put the trip in the context of two careers.

After 2011’s “Nobel Thief,” 2012’s “Uncle Shyamal Turns off the Lights,” 2015’s “Peace Haven,” 2016’s “Mi Amor” and 2019’s “Aadhaar,” Indian filmmaker Suman Ghosh returns again to the Busan International Film Festival.

A treatise on social inequality, the film follows Birju and Shona, trash collectors who live in a Kolkata slum with their young daughter. They scour the city’s affluent areas by day for garbage and their experiences become the grist of stories for their daughter by night.
Like “Aadhaar,” “The Scavenger of Dreams,” then called “The Waste Collector,” was also at Busan’s Asian Project Market, where it gained significant exposure. The germ of the film was from a New York Times article about waste collectors that Ghosh read years ago that stayed with him.

SAG-AFTRA’s interunion solidarity rally on Tuesday was highlighted by a reunion of the cast of “The West Wing,” and Martin Sheen went into full President Bartlett mode to give a rousing speech to the thousands of Hollywood union members who had joined to march outside of the Disney lot in Burbank.
“The Irish tell a story of a man who arrives at the gates of heaven and asks to be let in and St. Peter says ‘Of course, just show us your scars’. The man says, ‘I have no scars’. St. Peter says ‘What a pity, was there nothing worth fighting for,'” Sheen said in the speech, video of which you can watch above.

There are a number of stories about how Gulzar, who turned 89 on Friday, became one of Hindi cinema’s most celebrated lyricists after being better known in his years as a struggler after Partition in Mumbai for his expertise in re-painting cars mauled in crashes.

Filmmaker Karan Johar has faced severe criticism after the unveiling of the trailer of his upcoming film ‘Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani’.
Karan has received backlash over “disrespecting” Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in one of the sequences of the trailer of his upcoming film.
In the trailer when Ranveer’s character Rocky comes over to Alia Bhatt’s character Rani’s house for a three-month stay as per arrangement, he comes across a portrait of Rabindranath Tagore, whom he shockingly identifies as Rani’s grandfather.
Further, the joke cracked on Rabindranath Tagore didn’t impress Bengalis. Many on social media slammed Karan Johar for “disrespecting” Rabindranath Tagore.
A user wrote: “Though the trailer is fun, but flabbergasted by this frame. Not in good taste.”
One said: “Maybe he thought just showing lavish sets, rich clothes will be more than enough for the audience.”

Amidst the fun frolic flamboyance fiesta that is the trailer of Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahani, the couple in love, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt (and we are already in love with this couple in love) comes up with a sensational idea to pacify their two warring families: they decide to live with their future in-laws to test the waters. Ranveer goes to Alia’s parents’ Bengali home and Alia moves in with Ranveer’s Punjabi parents.
Switch Bharat.
But the fun begins long before the cultural clash with the two lovebirds sharing a crackling chemistry from the first frame. Ranveer is boorish and brash, Alia is elegant and poised. Hell, this is a jodi made in heaven with lots of twists turns and fun encounters.
We have seen Alia and Ranveer together before in an entirely different milieu and avatar in Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy.

For good measure, Saigal revitalised the ghazal as popular and public form with his rendition of Ghalib, Zauq, Akbar, Arzoo and others and also went on to make recorded film music a lucrative business for music companies.
What was ironic in this that he was rejected twice by HMV in Delhi and Calcutta due to “lack of training” but went to be snapped by a perceptive agent of Hindusthan Records. One record, containing just a bandish “Jhulana jhulao re”, went on to sell a whopping five lakh pieces soon after its release in 1933!
Yet, posterity has not been very kind to him – an autodidact, without any formal training, who became a singing legend of such prowess that even classical singers were in awe of him. He also picked up Bengali so well that Rabindranath Tagore himself gave him permission to render ‘Rabindrasangeet’.

And this was recognised by his peers. There is a story that once he and Raj Kapoor were at the Calcutta airport in 1973, when a cinema fan went to the latter to get his autograph and was told to approach Dutt first, with the master showman saying that he was only a "star", but Dutt was an actor!
While Dutt’s sense of timing, the funny intonation, and the maniacal gleam and laughter he could produce at will, served him well in comedy as "Gol Maal" (1979), "Rang Birangi" – with its slapstick chase through a children’s playground, "Kissi Se Na Kehna" (both 1983), "Lakhon Ki Baat" (1984), et al, attest, he could deftly turn the same mannerisms to display a marked unrepentant villainy.

Actor Anshuman Jha, who is awaiting the release of his animal vigilante film, ‘Lakadbaggha’, shed extra pounds to suit the part for the Rabindranath Tagore classic ‘Purano Sei Diner Kotha’ from the film.
The shedding of weight makes Anshuman look quite young in the song, precisely a 19 year old.
Talking about the same, the actor said, “I enjoyed the challenge of putting on some muscle weight and losing it all for the flashback scene where I need to look 19 years old. Where the mind is without fear and the head is held High – Tagore is a hero for me. I feel it’s our responsibility to bring back the words of these legendary wordsmiths – like Tagore, like Kabir – so that the younger generation remembers what these greats and their art stood for”.

With Yusuf Khan back in Mumbai and his Pune sojourn over, his major goal was to get gainfully employed or target new avenues of earning to share the family burden. He was blissfully unaware that lady luck was about to smile on him. The turn of events propitiously sequenced by providence was to catapult young Yusuf Khan into Dilip Kumar, the megastar of the then Bombay film industry now dubbed as Bollywood.
There are many versions of Dilip Kumar’s entry in the film industry but we shall recount here only the version we believe is the most authentic.
Yusuf commenced his endeavours in the city by helping his Agha ji in his fruits business. His ageing father was becoming rather frail, so Yusuf started travelling to the orchards in the hilly regions of Dehradun and Nainital in north India. Little did the young man know that one of these...

OpinionWhat does dubbing, a business decision, have to do with India’s non-existent national language?Sowmya RajendranIn 1948, SS Vasan, the founder of Ananda Vikatan magazine and the man who launched Gemini Studios, released Chandralekha, a Tamil historical adventure film. It took five years to complete the project, and Vasan, the producer and director of the film, reportedly had to mortgage his property in order to make it. Chandralekha was the most expensive Indian film made up till that point, and Vasan also made a Hindi version of it with the same actors that became a major hit. In his book Starlight Starbright, film historian Randor Guy writes, “Chandralekha, made in Tamil and Hindi, created a sensation and smashed box-office records all over the country. Its Hindi version opened the doors for South Indian producers to sell their Hindi-wares in the North.” The film was also dubbed and released in Japanese,...

Aditya Vikram Sengupta’s debut feature, “Labour of Love,” bowed at Venice Days in 2014 where it won the Fedeora Award for best director of a debut film, en route to winning several international awards and at home in India. He’s back on the Lido with “Once Upon a Time in Calcutta,” his third feature, which screens in the Horizons strand.
“Labour of Love,” a lyrical look at a relationship, was set in Sengupta’s native city, Kolkata, the Eastern Indian metropolis formerly known as Calcutta, which is crumbling on the one hand and rapidly modernizing on the other. Both the city and memories feature prominently in India-Norway-France collaboration “Once Upon a Time in Calcutta,” where three lives collide against contrasting backdrops of simultaneous urban decay and growth. The film is shot by Gökhan Tiryaki, Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s regular Dp.

Mumbai, Dec 9 (Ians) Actor Sharib Hashmi, who recently appeared in the web film Darbaan, says that he has a guy-next-door image and, though he gets typecast in films at times, he has no complaints.
"As an actor it is important to grab the opportunity to do different roles in every project. I do not mind being typecast or getting stereotyped. For example, Charlie Chaplin -- we have seen him playing the same character, the gags are different and the stories are different. But it is the same character in different situations, right?" Sharib told Ians.
"As long as I am bringing something to the character, and enjoy doing it, I do not comp;lain even though I may have played such a character 10 times before. If Mr. Amitabh Bachchan would have thought of getting stereotype and refuses to do those characters, Indian cinema would have missed out...

Darbaan (Zee5)
Starring Sharib Hashmi, Sharad Kelkar, Rasika Dugal, Flora Saini and Harsh Chhaya
Directed by Bipin Nadkarni
There is something about Rabindranath Tagore’s stories that lends itself to great cinema. Darbaan is not a great film. But it’s a very good piece of cinema. Artistically imagined and gently executed, it has the very accomplished Sharib Hashmi playing a simple caregiver in a feudal family (the story is translocated from the end of zamindari to the takeover of the coalmines in Dhanbad in the early 1970s) whose life is a litany of subservience.
Hashmi immerses himself in the role with a furious passion that reminded me of Ashok Kumar in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Aashirwaad. Sharib Hashmi is a great actor destined to secrete his greateness in small meaningful films while actors with not even a grain of his talent are strutting around as stars in Bollywood.

Mumbai, Dec 3 (Ians) Sharib Hashmi's latest role could come across as a big challenge, if you are seeped in the classics and the written works of Rabindranath Tagore.
Sharib's new film is "Darbaan", based on Tagore's Bengali short story "Khokababur Pratyabartan". The tale has been memorably adapted for screen in 1960, by way of the classic Bengali film of the same name starring the late icon Uttam Kumar. Sharib essays the same role in "Darbaan", a Hindi adaptation of the Tagore story.
In the film, Sharib plays Raicharan, caretaker of the infant son of a rich household, who is fated to get entangled in a tragedy involving the child.
"Do not compare me with a legend like Uttam Kumar. I am nowhere close to his calibre as an actor. I have tried my best to deliver my performance to create the wonderful character of Raicharan, but he was a legend,...

In his 1984 film “Ghare Baire”, Indian filmmaker Satyajit Ray touches upon two of the most controversial topics within his home country, the division of Muslims and Hindus as well as tendencies towards liberalism versus nationalism. The original script, based on the novel of the same title by Rabindranath Tagore, had already been written in the 1940, long before Ray would direct his first feature film “Pather Panchali”. Like with so many of his feature, the narrative framework of a story, a tale of a woman captured between two men, offers a viewer a very insightful and still quite current view on the overlapping of the private person and politics as well as the dilemma this causes.
The story takes place in 1907 after the partition of the state of Bengali by Lord Curzon, effectively dividing the Muslim and Hindu parts. In order to protest this development, many nationalist movements...
