Oppenheimer took home the most golden statues — including director Christopher Nolan’s very first Academy Award — at the 2024 Oscars, which was hosted once again by Jimmy Kimmel.
Christopher Nolan’s J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic led the pack with 13 nominations and ultimately won best picture, best director, best actor (Cillian Murphy), best supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), best cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema) and best original score (Ludwig Göransson). It was followed by Poor Things, which won four awards (including best actress for Emma Stone) and was nominated for 11. Killers of the Flower Moon earned 10 noms but left the show empty-handed, while Barbie was nominated for eight Oscars and won best original song for “I’m Just Ken.”
The 96th Oscars were held on Sunday, March 10 at Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. Those who missed the live telecast can stream the ceremony on demand on Hulu.

Despite two historic strikes, shifting release schedules, and the ongoing risk of coronavirus, Hollywood had a lot to celebrate at tonight’s 96th Academy Awards. If there was a message to take away from this year’s awards season, it’s that 2023 was a very good year for movies.

My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. We won’t say changed, since it seems like the certain sure bets at that time have become even surer bets. You all know “Oppenheimer,” long considered a frontrunner in many categories,” received the most nominations then with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10. Well, tonight, this evening of Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:00pm Et, we’re finally gonna see if what we all assume to be true is actually going to pan out: That “Oppenheimer” is teed up for a very big night, as IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has predicted, with her final Oscar picks, herself.
“Oppenheimer” has won top honors at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Surely Oscars domination is next, right?...

The biopic “Oppenheimer” was meant to take the award season by storm ever since its release. With a powerhouse cast and a director known for meticulous attention to detail, the film seemed destined for critical acclaim.
A still from Oppenheimer (2023)
However, a recent observation by industry expert Amy Nicholson has thrown a wrench into “Oppenheimer’s” awards trajectory. Known for catching historical goofs and picking movies apart, she spotted a small detail that feels illegal for a Christopher Nolan movie. This could either just be a harmless oversight or maybe a potentially award-sinking misstep.

Last year, Brendan Fraser won Best Actor for “The Whale,” which also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling for artists Adrien Morot, Judy Chin, and Annemarie Bradley. This is a combination of Oscar categories that have popped up several times over the years. But could it happen again this year? Well, theoretically, yes.
The brilliant makeup artist Kazu Hiro, also known as Kazuhiro Tsuji, turned Bradley Cooper into Leonard Bernstein in Netflix’s “Maestro.” Kazu Hiro landed himself an Oscar nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside Kay Georgiou and Lori McCoy-Bell. Meanwhile, Cooper is nominated for Best Actor.
Along with “The Whale,” several other movies have done well with this pair of Oscar categories. In 2018, “Darkest Hour” won Best Actor for Gary Oldman and Hiro won Best Makeup and Hairstyling alongside David Malinowski and Lucy Sibbick. In 2014, “Dallas Buyers Club” won both awards, too, with Matthew McConaughey winning for acting...

The films up for the 2024 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Golda,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow.” Our current odds show that “Maestro” (10/3) is favored to win, followed in order by “Poor Things” (71/20), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), “Society of the Snow” (9/2), and “Golda” (9/2).
This lineup is the category’s second in a row to include a 54% first-timer majority, thus constituting a new trend after 70% remained the norm for the preceding half decade. The present rookie subset consists of “Golda” trio Suzi Battersby, Karen Hartley Thomas, and Ashra Kelly-Blue as well as one artist from each other film: Luisa Abel (“Oppenheimer”), Ana López-Puigcerver (“Society of the Snow”), Lori McCoy-Bell (“Maestro”), and Josh Weston (“Poor Things”).
McCoy-Bell and Weston share their respective nominations with Kazu Hiro and Mark Coulier, each of whom succeeded on two of his previous four outings. While Coulier won for “The Iron Lady” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel...

Robert Downey Jr. stunned the global audiences with his iconic Iron Man portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Other than the superhero genre, he has also showcased his versatile talent in mainstream cinema and recently garnered praise for doing a commendable job in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (2023). While he played a supporting role, Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt shared the screen as spouses.

The trio overall played a significant role in the movie, with Murphy playing the titular role of Robert J. Oppenheimer. Reminiscing on their time while working on the project, they made an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live this Friday where Blunt’s blunt response left the former speechless.

Emily Blunt revealed on Thursday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! that Oppenheimer co-star Cillian Murphy smashed his head open in a most unlikely way. The actor was injured while fluffing a pillow she gave him to help him sleep while shooting the film.
Blunt, Murphy, and Robert Downey Jr. were all on the show.
The Murphy accident started when a special pillow was gifted to help him get a good night’s sleep.
“I just felt [what] Cillian needed, even more than food, was sleep on this movie,” Blunt said. “So I got him this very beautiful pillow that I’m obsessed with … it’s a Hästens pillow.
“He was really luxuriating in this pillow one night, and he woke up in the middle of the night — this is what he told me the next day — And he went to fluff himself back down in the pillow, misjudged where it was,...

A pillow Emily Blunt gave Cillian Murphy on the set of Oppenheimer led to the actor having to get his head glued shut.
Blunt, Murphy and Robert Downey Jr., who are all nominated for Oscars for their roles in the biopic, stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! to discuss the film. During their conversation, Murphy opened up about the weight loss he underwent for the part, going to bed hungry and always being cold because of his decreased body fat.
However, Blunt felt that the one thing Murphy needed during production more than anything, even food, was sleep. So, she got him a special pillow.

“Maestro” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 18 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and special effects races but lost period/character hairstyling to “Barbie,” which was snubbed by the Oscars. Likewise for “Saltburn,” which won both contemporary makeup and hairstyling.
Of this year’s other Oscar nominees, “Poor Things” lost all three of its bids just hours after pulling off an upset at the BAFTAs, “Golda” and “Oppenheimer” were each defeated in a single race while “Society of the Snow” was snubbed by the guild.
These wins boost the odds for “Maestro” to prevail at the Academy Awards. In the decade-long history of these guild honors, there has been just one year when an Muahs winner did not go on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The Oscar-frontrunning “Maestro” was the big winner at the 11th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards (held February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel). Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein opus took period/character makeup and special makeup effects. This puts “Maestro” in the Oscar driver’s seat (led by two-time winner Kazu Hiro) against “Poor Things,” “Oppenheimer,” “Golda,” and “Society of the Snow.”
Two non-Oscar competitors, “Saltburn”and “Barbie,” split the other wins: Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller grabbed both contemporary makeup and hairstyling, while Greta Gerwig’s billion-dollar blockbuster snagged period/character hairstyling.
TV winners, meanwhile, were divided among “The Idol” (contemporary makeup), “The Crown” (period/character makeup), “The Last of Us” (special makeup effects), “The Morning Show” (contemporary hairstyling), and “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story” (period/character hairstyling).

Some categories go together naturally, like Best Picture and Best Director. It’s no different in the below-the-line categories, either, with Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling having an interesting relationship with one another.
The three design awards are often paired or grouped together as a trio and awarded to the same film. Most recently, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” won both Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Let’s take a closer look at this trifecta of categories and examine the last 20 ceremonies to break down how often these awards overlap.
As you can see, in the past two decades, there have been 11 instances where a film has won at least two of these three design categories.
Eight films have won both Costume Design and Production Design: “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004, “The Aviator” in 2005, “Memoirs of a Geisha...

Oppenheimer was one of the surprising success stories of the summer box office, and now Christopher Nolan’s World War II-era biopic has landed 13 Oscar nominations, more than any other film this year.
Notably, it marks Nolan’s first time landing both directing and writing nominations for one of his films, and it is also Nolan’s most nominated film ever. (2008’s The Dark Knight, 2010’s Inception and 2017’s Dunkirk each received eight.)
Oppenheimer is nominated for best picture (for producers Nolan, Emma Thomas and Charles Roven), while Nolan is in contention for the adapted screenplay. (He adapted the script from the 2005 J. Robert Oppenheimer biography American Prometheus, by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.)
The film also landed noms for actor (Cillian Murphy), supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), supporting actress (Emily Blunt), cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema), costume design (Ellen Mirojnick), makeup and hairstyling (Luisa Abel), original score (Ludwig Göransson...

The 11th annual Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards are set for Feb. 18.

“Oppenheimer” hair department head Jaime Leigh McIntosh recalls being terrified when she signed on for Christopher Nolan‘s biographical film starring Cillian Murphy. “It was my first time working with IMAX and with Chris. You need to have an eye for detail in our line of work anyway, but in that world it is extreme. Also, it has to look right on the camera on the day because Chris is not going to be adjusting anything in post.”

“It’s a very complicated, difficult thing to do,” notes Luisa Abel of the challenge of working on “Oppenheimer” and specifically of “aging” the characters “over many decades.” Christopher Nolan’s epic film about the Manhattan Project and its architect J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) had “73 speaking roles” and “18 agings” that included “three to five leaps of decades.” The head of the makeup and prosthetic department collaborated closely with head of hair department Jaime Leigh McIntosh, and they both discuss their process in a new video that Gold Derby is debuting exclusively. Watch the “Oppenheimer” exclusive video featurette above.
As the film chronicles decades in the life of Oppenheimer, McIntosh had to tailor Murphy’s hair to reflect his aging. The haircut that marks his transition from Ph.D. student to his time on the Manhattan Project “ended up taking five hours,” says McIntosh, because “Chris was there the entire time.

“She blended in — there was no ‘Kitty’s world,’” “Oppenheimer” production designer Ruth De Jong says of the woman portrayed by Emily Blunt in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster.
Kitty is a scientist with her own ambitions when she meets J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the man who led the atomic bomb project. Her career takes a backseat when she falls in love with him, and she watches her life slip by as his work overwhelms and consumes them both.
When she first appears in “Oppenheimer,” however, Kitty is a well-to-do woman filled with confidence — “so bright and alive and unwilling to contort and conform to the housewife ideal,” Blunt says.
And while the film very much centers around what is going inside Robert’s mind, Kitty keeps her husband grounded throughout the movie.
Editor Jennifer Lame took care to convey Kitty’s air of confidence when she and Robert first meet.

Yes, Christopher Nolan wants you to buy the Blu-ray of “Oppenheimer.”
But the event at the Academy’s Linwood G. Dunn Theatre Monday night promoting the November 21 home video launch of the $951 million global hit — which no one in Hollywood predicted — also screened “The Story of Our Time: The Making of Oppenheimer,” a Blu-ray special feature, and added a stellar crafts panel for the press, guild, and Academy voters on hand.
Universal knows that craft nominations could add up for “Oppenheimer,” as they have for other Nolan movies like “Dunkirk” and “Inception,” and that these craft maestros would showcase their expertise and star power. At the reception afterwards, Nolan told IndieWire that he was surprised at how strong the making-of movie was, because he actively avoided having the crew on the set, finding them an unwelcome distraction.

Fission, a process by which one thing becomes more than one. Fusion, a process by which more than one thing becomes one. Both had meanings before they were adopted by nuclear physics, but in its atomic narrative Oppenheimer is built from two strands, each named for one of those processes. Fission, in colour, itself divergent. Fusion, in black and white, itself convergent. Christopher Nolan adapts for the screen a tale that gives him the chance to exercise his particular fondnesses, for large format film and its chemistry, for stories that loop around one another in uncertainty until certain elements are observed, for small things with large impacts.
Fission, centred on Oppenheimer himself, Cillian Murphy always recognisable in more than one era. Luisa Abel (a frequent Nolan collaborator) and her team can't quite make Murphy look as young as his subject in some spaces nor as old as his prototype in others.

This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its 276-member-strong class of 2013.
The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.
Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.
"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. "Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.

Koch also told Variety, "In the past eight or nine years, each branch could only bring in X amount of members. There were people each branch would have liked to get in but couldn't. We asked them to be more inclusive of the best of the best, and each branch was excited, because they got...

Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy came to an incredible finish this summer with the release of The Dark Knight Rises. And with the Oscar season very much on the horizon, Warner Bros. have launched their campaign for the final instalment in Nolan’s trilogy, alongside Ben Affleck’s Argo, the Wachowski siblings’ and Tom Tykwer’s Cloud Atlas, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike.
Nolan’s final instalment entered the $1bn. club this summer, and has personally been one of my favourite films of the year by a long shot, earning a place on my favourite films of all time.
Naturally, the studios are all gearing up their campaigns for the coming awards season, and though some of the categories that Warner Bros. are aiming for here are more than a little bit hopeful, we could well see The Dark Knight Rises...

From cinematographer Wally Pfister to Bane's body double, meet the brains and the beefcake who brought the Batman series to such a spectacular end
The Beginnings
Wally Pfister, cinematographer
Chris [Nolan] and I evolved our process of how to approach action pictures together, and it was very helpful that what we did in between were very different kinds of projects. There's a bit of release between these movies that allowed us both to grow in different directions and explore different approaches. After Batman Begins, we did The Prestige, a 19th-century period piece about magic; it had very little action but an awful lot of fascinating character studies, so we applied some of the things we learned to The Dark Knight. Then we shot Inception in lots of different countries, and Chris really applied that to The Dark Knight Rises, which opened up a fresh approach to scale. I believe there's only...
