Hulu will stream a new live-action adaptation of author Douglas Adams' "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", followed by a six-novel series, from a division of ABC Studios that focuses on development for cable and streaming outlets:
"...the last surviving man on Earth is 'Arthur Dent', following the demolition of the planet by a 'Vogon' constructor fleet, making way for a 'hyperspace bypass'.
"Dent is rescued from Earth's destruction by 'Ford Prefect'—a human-like alien writer for the eccentric, electronic travel guide 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy', by hitchhiking onto a passing Vogon spacecraft.
"Following his rescue, Dent explores the galaxy with Prefect and encounters 'Trillian', another human who had been taken from Earth, prior to its destruction, by the two-headed 'President of the Galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox' and the depressed 'Marvin', the 'Paranoid Android'..."

Douglas Adams has proven to be a notoriously difficult author to adapt to any form of video, but Dirk Gently has somehow managed to lend itself well to service as inspiration, if not actually adaptation.
Dirk Gently was already a show starring Stephen Mangan, and it was brilliant, and now BBC America brings you Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. Both shows can only legitimately claim to be “inspired by” by the Douglas Adams work, and that’s probably the only way to get something that works. Adams’ writing is too specific to the medium, and largely far too “internal” to adapt in a direct way.
In the latest show, that means that there is actually little in common with the book series in terms of the actual plot, though there is still a Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett – Penny Dreadful), who is still a “holistic” detective, and there is still...

Here's a treat for Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy fans: previously unseen material is being performed live this very week...
Previously unseen Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy material is to be exclusively performed at a comedy book festival that kicks off later this week. And the good news is that tickets are still available.
Writer Jem Roberts has unearthed reams of previously undiscovered archive material from Douglas Adams as part of his research for a new biography, The Frood. His stash includes unfinished drafts of a second Hitchhiker TV series that never got made, reams of printed notes for an abandoned Dirk Gently book, A Spoon Too Short, and numerous abandoned chapters for Mostly Harmless.
But the cornerstone of the performance at the Chortle Comedy Book Festival will be a chapter from Life The Universe & Everything that was ditched before publication. In the extract, Angst In Space, Zaphod Beeblebrox faces a court interrogation.

Alex's trek through the film roles of actors who've played the Doctor reaches Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy...
Read the previous part in this series, Doctor Who: the film careers of Patrick Troughton and Tom Baker, here.
In March 1981, as he made his Doctor Who debut, Peter Davison was already one the best known faces on British television. Not only was he the star of both a BBC and an ITV sitcom - Sink Or Swim and Holding The Fort - but as the young and slightly reckless Tristan Farnon in All Creatures Great And Small, about the often humorous cases of Yorkshire vet James Herriot and his colleagues, he had cemented his stardom. The part led, indirectly, to his casting as the venerable Time Lord.

Warning: contains spoilers for Nightmare In Silver (our spoiler-filled review of the episode is here).
A singular joy of fandom, and a geeky one at that, is the administration. Not the tangible Post-It notes-and-whiteboards kind of admin, but the mental filing, cross-referencing and labelling involved when you follow and love someone’s work.
Imagine Joss Whedon brings out, say, a Shakespeare adaptation starring a clutch of recurring collaborators. Where do you file that? Under A for anomaly, W for Whedonverse, or – forgoing alphabetisation all together - cross-referenced between Stuff I Should Have Paid More Attention To In High School and Stuff I Paid All My Attention To In High School? Do you sort by theme, quality, popularity, or critical reception? Where, in the history of your relationship with this person’s work,...

Zoe provides an introduction to the TV version of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, a television series unlike any other...
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable series. In fact it's arguably the most remarkable series ever to come out of the British Broadcasting Corporation. Not only is it a remarkable series it is also a highly successful one, having already been produced as a radio series, novel, LP and stage show.
Labelled by unimaginative producers as ‘unfilmable’, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was aired on BBC two in January 1981 to an eagerly awaiting audience of fans and hoopy froods alike. The award winning series starred many of the original cast members including Simon Jones as Arthur Dent, Mark Wing-Davey as Zaphod Beeblebrox and Peter Jones as the voice of the guide; however for the TV series a new Trillian and Ford Prefect were required.

The 2005 adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy divided fans. Mark takes a look back...
In 2005, director Garth Jennings and producer Nick Goldsmith, better known collectively as Hammer and Tongs, finally brought Disney's long-gestating film version of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy to the big screen. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. But as this article will contend, on the subject of the 2005 cinematic adaptation of the same name, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy would have this to say: mostly harmless.
This is not a popular opinion amongst those fans who have derided the film ever since its release, but we don't intend to persuade people that they were wrong about this version of the beloved Douglas Adams story. But it was liked by some, including this writer, and so it's worth re-evaluating.

The Mayans, the wise race of ancients who created hot cocoa, set December 21st, 2012 as the end date of their Calendar, which the intelligent and logical amongst us know signifies the day the world will end, presumably at 12:21:12am, Mountain Time. The Film: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005) The Plot: Arthur Dent (Martin Freeman) discovers that his house is scheduled for demolition to make way for a freeway bypass. Thanks to his unique friend Ford Prefect (Mos Def), he also discovers that the planet Earth is scheduled for demolition to make way for a hyperspace bypass. While speculation rages about how much substance there is to talk of a big screen Doctor Who movie, we've decided to offer our casting services...
Settle down, now. Give your gnashing teeth a rest, and just admit that even if the prospect of Harry Potter director David Yates doing a big-screen reboot of Doctor Who drives you to distraction, you've still thought about it. Admit that you've considered who the Doctor would be in a big Hollywood-backed reboot.
Completely disregarding the argument about whether a new cinematic continuity is a good idea or not, any Whovian is going to have considered the idea before yesterday's scoop. As we're obviously all agreed that Christopher Walken should voice the Daleks (because that would be incredible), we've rounded up some of our favourites to take on the controls of the Tardis.
There are a few caveats to the list, naturally. It wouldn't be...

Yet another superhero movie opens this week. But, this isn’t just any superhero. Captain American: The First Avenger opens nationwide in theaters on Friday, July 22nd. Complimenting his enhanced strength, speed and overall badassness, Captain America sports a nifty cool indestructible shield, which he uses both for defense and offense. In honor of this classic character’s triumphant debut on the big screen, here’s my list of the Top Ten Coolest Movie Weapons.
Honorable mention: The Point-of-View Gun, The Hitchhiker’S Guide To The Galaxy
It may not be lethal, but it’s a brilliant idea. If you can’t kill your enemy, or “kill them with kindness,” then why not try winning by way of forcing your point-of-view upon them? This bulky but effective contraption proves to be a thorn in the side of Zaphod Beeblebrox, but a real blast in the hands of Trillion.

Oh, if only this had happened while author Douglas Adams was still around to come up with more stories.
BBC4 will air a one off, one hour long adaptation of the Hitchhiker's Guide To the Galaxy author's other classic, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, in their fall / winter season. No cast announced yet but the man behind the adaptation is Howard Overman, who also wrote Misfits and Vexed.
To put it in the most basic terms possible, I adore Dirk Gently. I practice zen navigation on a regular basis and damn if he wasn't right. And I think - in the hands of the right director - the character is by far the most visual and adaptable that Adams ever created. It is certainly a far, far easier road to take Dirk Gently to the screen than it ever was to bring Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Arther Dent and the...

Here in Britain, Parliament has been dissolved and there's just under a month until the UK goes to the polling booths to decide who has to put up with taxes, education and all that joy for the next five or so years. This isn't the time for Den Of Geek to get political, but we would like to say don't worry - politicians could be a lot worse than they are.
So often in films, politicians are all that is villainous, slimy or incompetent about the cast of characters, so imagine if one of these movie politicians got into office next month.
You'd be yearning for the days when a ministerial cock-up entailed the receipt for a Battlefield Earth DVD turning up on the register of ministers' interests, rather than the destruction of...

Sam Rockwell has played some pretty entertaining characters, from his role as Guy in Galaxy Quest, to Zaphod Beeblebrox in The Hitchhiker’s Guide with several serious roles in-between, but get ready to see him in a hilarious new light as Bronco/Brutus in the upcoming comedy ‘Gentlemen Broncos.’
Gentlemen Broncos tells the story of Ben Purvis, a home schooled teenage outcast and aspiring fantasy writer who attends a fantasy convention and finds his idea, Bronco, ripped off by acclaimed novelist Ronald Chevalier, who has turned desperate for ideas.
In the film, Rockwell’s character changes from Bronco to Brutus after Chevalier plagiarizes Ben’s work. Gentlemen Broncos is directed by Nacho Libre and Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess.

Don’T read this review. I’m being serious. In fact, don’t read Any reviews of Moon. I mean, if you absolutely Have to read a review, well, then, read mine. But still, I urge you to click back to the homepage, ignore this review (which I toiled oh-so-hard on) and spend your time checking out the other new content on Starlog’s site. Why, you ask, am I demanding that you pay never no mind to this well-written, spot-on, entertaining and informative review? (Cue the sarcasm). Well, because in this age of Spoiler reviews and full-disclosure trailers, the delight of being surprised while watching a cinematic story unfold has been lost. In this era of instantaneous information overload, it seems like we know the beginning, middle and ends of most movies before they’re even released (Wolverine anybody?).

In all my years of living science fiction, I have lost count of the number of times I have jumped to lightspeed, launched from a catapult bay, charged up the main gun or scored a kill in the money lane - at least in my head.
In reality, space ships are functional and boring, but in sci-fi, they are super-frickin-cool, so to that end I have picked my top five, based on the ones that blew me away the most.
It wasn't easy, and honourable mentions must go to to the Liberator, Serenity, the Borg Cube, Buck Rogers' interceptor, War Rocket Ajax and - most shocking of all - the Tardis. Even the Doctor's sweet ride didn't make it (aesthetics played a part in my choice - it is a police box, plus virtually everything I do has a Who link, so I decided to change up)

The last time we saw Sam Rockwell in outer space he was playing the two headed President of the Galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He plays it a little closer to home this time as the lone employee of a mining company working an outpost on the moon. He works his three-year tour of duty with hope of returning to his wife and daughter when it's all done, but things go wrong when he discovers a downed space craft (at least I think that's what's going on) containing an injured man who is his exact duplicate. This looks like a science fiction thriller with a lot of potential and things get luney (for a limited release anyway) on June 12.
