In his many decades as a mangaka, whether with Dr. Slump or Dragon Ball, he always gave his best with each chapter that came out. Born in Leeds before moving to Canada and then Cornwall in childhood, Wilkinson knew he was destined to work in entertainment at the age of 18 when he was asked to direct a play.
He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) before forging a career in theatre, film and TV. In 1986, he got his first major screen role in mini-series First Among Equals, based on politician-turned-author Jeffrey Archer’s best-selling novel.

Eleven and Sony Television International are adapting novelist and former politician Jeffrey Archer’s bestselling “Kane and Abel” trilogy for television.
The trilogy, comprising “Kane and Abel,” “The Prodigal Daughter” and “Shall We Tell The President,” were written by Archer between 1977 and 1982. It tells the story of two men, one Polish, an illegitimate son of a Baron, the other rich and privileged from a wealthy Boston banking family. Born on the same day on opposite sides of the world, their paths cross only once in their ruthless pursuit to build a fortune, but what follows is an epic story of revenge that spans 60 years. Linked by an all-consuming hatred after one catastrophic incident, these two patriarchs blindly commit their lives to destroying one another’s empires. It’s only when Abel’s strong-willed daughter, Florentyna, meets Kane’s son Richard, that these two enemies start to understand that their feud...

Having recently tackled the world of haute couture in “Halston,” Ewan McGregor is going to break out his climbing gear to scale the heights in “Everest.”
The high-altitude adventure comes courtesy of Doug Liman, the exacting action auteur behind “The Bourne Identity” and “Edge of Tomorrow,” and will star McGregor as George Mallory, an English mountaineer who took part in the first three British expeditions to Mount Everest. This is, of course, not to be confused with 2015’s “Everest,” a re-telling of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, when eight climbers caught in a blizzard died while attempting to descend from the summit.
Here’s the official logline: “1921. Everest remains the very last great unconquered challenge on earth. Many have sacrificed their sanity and often their lives in the attempt to reach its fabled summit. George Mallory (McGregor) is picked by the arrogant Arthur Hinks (Strong) of the Royal Geographic Society to scale the impossible.

Exclusive: Author Jeffrey Archer has aligned with his first Hollywood rep. He has teamed with veteran book-to-film agent Joel Gotler at Ipg to shop his newest bestseller, Nothing Ventured, as well as his back list titles for film and television.
Archer has sold 275 million copies worldwide, across 97 countries and in 33 languages, and he has authored 27 Sunday Times #1 bestsellers. Oxford educated, he ran the 100 yard dash for Great Britain, and was a Member of Parliament. But he hasn’t been repped in Hollywood before, even though TV series were made from his novels Not A Penny More, Not a Penny Less, Kane and Abel, and First Among Equals.
Nothing Ventured will be followed this October by Hidden in Plain Sight. Both center on the brilliant Scotland Yard detective, William Warwick, as he battles a powerful criminal nemesis. Gotler is already fielding offers to turn William Warwick into a major television series.

This dull, clunking return to one of cinema’s great warhorses lacks all the subtlety, passion and grandeur of its more illustrious predecessors
The Roman epic with all its legions of extras was once a genre that belonged to the big screen, but CGI paradoxically shrank it to laptop size and this new version of Ben-Hur has somehow taken the diminution further still. Despite the 3D presentation, this is a film that should be seen on a plane, on the 6in x 8in screen on the back of an airline seat, probably at 2am on a transatlantic flight, accompanied by a complementary sachet of salty cashews, a vodka and tonic and then a meal of mechanically reconstituted chicken in a fillet-style serving. This tale of warring friends-who-are-closer-than-brothers feels like a Jeffrey Archer script that Lew Grade would have turned down in 1979.

This laboriously acted and directed spy tale-cum-love story is like a Jeffrey Archer airport novel with uninteresting, guessable revelations
A stolidly old-fashioned, rather bafflingly preposterous spy-tale-slash-love-story is what this creaky film offers, directed by Sharim Sharif and adapted by the director from her own 2004 novel. It features laborious acting and directing, and a screenplay whose revelations are uninteresting, even were they not guessable long in advance. It is like Jeffrey Archer with a twist.
The time frame flashes back and forth between the early 60s and the early 90s. In cold war America, ambitious young Russian diplomat Sacha (Sam Reid) has arrived with a trade delegation, planning to defect – but will his beautiful young wife Katya (Rebecca Ferguson) be able to escape with him? This story is interspersed with scenes from Glasnost Russia of 1992, in which old Sacha is played by Charles Dance and his young niece Lauren, an artist...

He has also finalized his favourite actor Rajkummar Yadav to play one of the protagonists. Interestingly, Hansal has earlier adapted Kane & Abel to television. Recounts the Shahid director, "I had done Kane & Abel for Zee TV in 1999. It was called 'Lakshya' and it starred Kay Kay Menon and Pramod Moutho as the two protagonists. It was a kind of game-changer on Indian television. But we were given the wrong telecast timing and the series never took off." Hansal has been desirous of taking the story to a larger screen and audience ever since Lakshya couldn't get the audience it deserved. Recently, Imtiaz Ali had converted his tele-film Highway (starring Aditya Shrivastava and Kartika Rane) into a feature film featuring Randeep Hooda and Alia Bhatt. Alas,...

It's Dracula vs. Bane as Luke Evans' name has been added to the mix for Doug Liman's "The Summit" at Sony Pictures.
An adaptation of Jeffrey Archer's historical novel "Paths of Glory", the story deals with the mystery of George Mallory's ascent of Mount Everest. The mountain climber made several attempts to be the first to reach the summit before that of his Australian rival George Finch.
However Mallory and partner Andrew 'Sandy' Irvine never returned from their June 1924 climb. In 1999, Mallory's frozen body was found near the summit on the North Face, and debate has raged ever since about whether he was actually on his way down or up.
Tom Hardy was previously linked for the role of Mallory, seemingly dropped out due to scheduling, but is now apparently back onboard. Luke Evans ("The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug," "Fast and Furious 6") was one of...

The assassination of JFK and the conspiracy theories that followed have proved irresistible to writers and artists, from Oliver Stone to Stephen King
• Mark Lawson on the 10 best books inspired by JFK
The grassy knoll. The book depository. Any further description of the location is superfluous. We know where we are, and when. Dealey Plaza in Dallas, Texas on 22 November 1963: the scene of the assassination of President John F Kennedy. History assumes mythic proportions when its very familiarity requires no further explanation or scene-setting; when it provides instead a well-signposted point of departure for artistic creativity. The matter of Dallas has been as resonant in the fiction and film of the past half century as the story of the Trojan war was in the literature of classical antiquity. Only Hitler and the Nazis rival its influence on the modern imagination.
Yet the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination will not be marked by consensus.

Benedict Cumberbatch is reportedly in line to replace Tom Hardy in upcoming drama Everest.
Doug Liman's film was set to star Hardy as British mountaineer George Mallory, who tried twice to scale Mount Everest during the 1920s before disappearing on the third attempt.
Deadline reports that scheduling conflicts have now forced Hardy to pull out, with Cumberbatch the frontrunner to replace him.
Several actors including Tom Hiddleston, James McAvoy, Henry Cavill, Matthew Goode, Dan Stevens and Joel Kinnaman are reportedly being considered to co-star as rival Australian climber George Finch.
Having failed to climb Everest in 1921 and 1922, Mallory and climbing partner Sandy Irvine vanished during a third attempt in 1924, and their bodies were not discovered until 1999. It is still unknown whether they had reached the summit before they died.
Up in the Air screenwriter Sheldon Turner adapted the script from Jeffrey Archer's book Paths of Glory.

I seriously don’t even know how this man has time to eat or sleep anymore. It seems that every week we hear about Benedict Cumberbatch joining a new project. He’s one of Hollywood’s most in demand actors right now and his plate is becoming increasingly busy.

Two filmmakers are currently trying to get to the top of an "Everest" film first: Doug Liman and Baltasar Kormakur. But the question is which one will get there first as one has lost a lead, and the other some financing. So let's start the Liman flick, which had been slated to star Tom Hardy. Well, according to Deadline, with a March 2014 start date eyed, scheduling didn't work out and now the hunt for a new leading man is on. Benedict Cumberbatch is apparently in the mix to take over Hardy's role as George Mallory, with Joel Kinnaman, James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston, Henry Cavill, Luke Evans, Dan Stevens, Matthew Goode and Jim Sturgess being tossed around to play George Finch, in the adaptation of Jeffrey Archer's "Paths Of Glory" that will tell the true tale of the first man to climb Mount Everest. We all have our own version of Diana, and that's the problem. As a new film opens, it's time to let her go
'I hesitate to use the term 'car crash drama'," wrote this newspaper's Peter Bradshaw last week of the new Diana biopic directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel and starring Naomi Watts, "but the awful truth is that, 16 years after that terrible day in 1997, she has died another awful death." The film has been universally panned by critics, with Bradshaw going on to describe Watts as looking "like she's in a two-hour Spitting Image sketch scripted by Jeffrey Archer", and the Times calling the whole project "atrocious and intrusive". If the film is indeed as poorly put together as the trailer, then I will not be going to see it, despite a long-held fascination with what Channel 4 once tastelessly described as "the woman behind the wardrobe".

After years of working as a screenwriter, racking up credits such as “The Longest Day,” “X-Men: First Class,” and most notably “Up in the Air,” it looks like Sheldon Turner might finally get an opportunity to direct one of his projects. Relativity Media recently acquired the gritty action thriller “Borderland.” Turner will write the script, and has his eye towards directing the project as well. Described as a modern day "Magnificent Seven"-esque western, “Borderland” centers on a newly elected mayor in a town overrun by cartel violence. The mayor decides to hire a band of former and current Special Forces operatives, training them to fight back. Soon the town turns into a battleground with the operatives finding themselves in over their heads. The film is an attempt to give an authentic look at post-war life for elite soldiers. Turner has got a number of different projects on his plate aside from “Borderland.

With AMC's "The Walking Dead" regularly trouncing the broadcast networks in ratings these days, it's no surprise that everyone's looking to get into business with the show's executive producer Gale Anne Hurd. She got a pilot order for WWII alien invasion drama "Horizon" at USA Network, NBC's working with her on an adaptation of Jeffrey Archer’s CIA assassin novel "The Eleventh Commandment" and AMC's developing a series about Area 51 with her. The most recent network to get into business with Hurd is FX, who according to Deadline have put a new project from her and Universal Cable Productions called "Crash and Burn" into development. Loosely inspired by Kevin Conley's 2009 nonfiction book "The Full Burn: On the Set, at the Bar, Behind the Wheel, and Over the Edge with Hollywood Stuntmen," "Crash and Burn" is a period drama about Doc Dixon, who works as a stuntman in the '70s in.

Given all the films about it, you’d think Mount Everest was something special, like the tallest mountain in the world, or summat. Sorry, summit. At least one project is in the works and a new one from Working Title and Universal makes two, with Christian Bale attached to star.Justin Isbell wrote the latest draft of Everest, which focuses on a disastrous 1996 expedition to scale the mountain. Three different groups of climbers were struck by a monstrous, blinding storm and eight of them ended up dead. Were you disappointed by the ending of "The Dark Knight Rises"? Did the showdown between Batman and Bane fail to live up to your expectations? Well never fear because Christian Bale and Tom Hardy will face off again — only this time they'll meet on the top of the world's tallest mountain.
Deadline reports that the Caped Crusader himself is in negotiations to star in Universal's "Everest." The film centers on the real-life story of three failed May 1996 expeditions that resulted in the deaths of eight climbers after they were hit by a sudden blizzard. The Mount Everest disaster, as it is known, was documented in detail by Jon Krakauer, a journalist who was a member of one of the expeditions and who later published the bestseller "Into Thin Air." The movie will be based in part on his book, as well as other source materials and interviews with the survivors.

It's a nice reminder of Salman Rushdie's early vibrant work, but this adaptation is a bit soupy and soapy
Salman Rushdie's reputation may currently be a bit of a bear-market, so it's a relief to recall the vibrant 1980 novel that made his name, now adapted for the screen by its author in this movie directed by Deepa Mehta: Rushdie himself supplies the gentle, pleasant off-camera narration. It's a watchable, robust piece of storytelling, especially in the first half, though what this rather soupy, soap-opera treatment weirdly does is show up the story's Jeffrey Archer quality in those two passionate young lead characters, made quasi-brothers by destiny. Saleem (Satya Bhabha) is the son of a wealthy man in Bombay and Shiva (Siddharth) the son of a poor beggar and street singer. Except that they're not. The babies, born at the moment of India's independence in 1947, were switched for...
