Almost every Bollywood junkie knows what to expect when they walk in to a cinema hall to watch a film starring none other than Mr. Salman Khan. Most of his releases during the course of the last five years have been films which have mind-numbing storylines; sexy, yet useless heroines with not much to do; as well as action/violent scenes written specifically to glamorize Salman’s much-talked about body and abs. However, to my immense surprise; Bajrangi Bhaijaan has none of these features and it is ultimately a poignant story about the relationship between a noble Indian man, who is determined to return a six-year-old girl to her parents across the border in Pakistan.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan is a film which looks at the relations between India and Pakistan from a more humane angle, as opposed to political. This film is not about the heated political relations between the two...

Before Yash Chopra’s Veer-Zaara (2004), there was Raj Kapoor’s Henna (1991). Perhaps today still the most beautiful and genre defining film on Indo-Pak cross border relations, with its aspirations for peaceful co-existence.
Henna released in the summer of 1991. It was the last film India’s showman Raj Kapoor was working on before he passed away unexpectedly a few years earlier in 1988. So in a sense, Henna was his swansong. The film was completed by his sons Randhir and Rishi Kapoor, with Randhir as director and Rishi as the leading man. The brothers later shared that they actually had to alter their father’s original script as it was a little too controversial and too ahead of its time, which really does make the mind ponder.
Henna’s character was created to symbolise an innocence that understands humanity and no man made borders and conflicts. That role went to Pakistani actress Zeba Bakhtiyar,...

In the second of two Yorkshire tributes to a century of Indian cinema, Irfan Ajeeb describes the extraordinary power of Bollywood film makers and stars
1999. It was a muggy night and approaching the end of a long and arduous day. The festivities were coming to a close and I was restively glancing at my watch as I knew I had yet to endure a four-hour drive to London. It was approaching midnight. Overdosing on coffee and chewing gum, I was anxious but at the same time excited - like a little kid waiting to open his presents on his tenth birthday.
The journey had begun as we set off on an empty M1. Sat on the back seat was the Indian actress, Pooja Bhatt, who had attended the Bite the Mango film festival at the then National Museum of Photography, Film & Television for an on-stage Screentalk interview. She had insisted...

Adnan Sami's son Azaan (from his marriage to Zeba Bakhtiar) who's down in India to visit his ailing grandfather, is all set cut his own album. Not surprising, considering the boy has already made a short film Meri Kahani which was screened at the Goa Film Festival last year where Azaan was seen with his mother Zeba Bakhtiar. Says the proud father, "Azaan made that film on computer software Final Cut Pro that I presented him. I think Farhan Akhtar made Lakshya on the same software. And now Azaan has inherited my music sense. My boy has already composed and sung 7 songs for the album without any help from me. He's all set to release his album long before the age when I released my first album." Apparently, Javed Akhtar heard Azaan's compositions and was impressed enough to agree to write the lyrics. Says Adnan, "Yes Javed Saab loved the songs.
