New Delhi, Aug 12 (Ians) The cult classic ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ which was released four decades ago, in 1983, stands as an enduring testament to the power of satire and humour, coupled with social commentary on corruption and media, in the Indian cinema.
Directed by Kundan Shah, and starring an ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Om Puri, Pankaj Kapur, Satish Shah, late Satish Kaushik, Bhakti Barve and Neena Gupta, the movie was a dark satire on the rampant corruption in Indian politics, bureaucracy, news media and business.
It still remains a timeless classic because of its razor-sharp wit and incisive take on corruption, politics, and societal hypocrisy.
Produced by National Film Development Corporation of India (Nfdc), the film’s narrative revolves around the misadventures of two bumbling photographers, Vinod Chopra (played by Naseeruddin), and Sudhir Mishra (played by Ravi).

While we get to watch new films all the time, the lockdown could be a golden chance to catch up with a few classics across genres. Digital platforms are overflowing with them, and you would literally be spoilt for choice selecting some really enjoyable stuff that has come out of Bollywood over the decades. Twenty-one days, it would seem, is too short a time to catch up with what really defines vintage Bollywood and is available in the Ott libraries.
Ians picks a few old films that you might want to revisit, that will let you relax and bust the stress of lockdown. Of course, this is not a definitive list.
* Chupke Chupke (1975)
Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the comedy film is about a man pretending to be a driver and fooling his wife's brother-in-law as an attempt to prove that the brother-in-law is not as smart as he claims to be.

On Saturday morning, Deepti Naval woke up to the rude shock of hearing that her favourite co-star Farooq Sheikh was no more. Stifling her sobs, Deepti says, "I spoke to Shabana in the morning. We were both simply howling on the phone. My last interaction with Farooq was two months ago at the Sharjah Book Fair. I was invited to read from my books and he was in conversation with me. He was a voracious reader. I woke up to say, 'what a beautiful morning'! And then a friend called and put the phone to the television where I hear Farooq is no more. What do I say? He was not just a constant part of my career, but also of my life. Oh God! It's so hard to believe he's gone. We worked together for the first time in Chashme Buddoor and we did 7-8 films together after that.

Mumbai, April 7: Rubbishing reports that Sai Paranjpye is upset about the remake of her "Chashme Buddoor", David Dhawan says he has done nothing that would offend the director of the old classic.
"How can she be upset without seeing my 'Chashme Baddoor'? I have not taken anything from her film except the idea of three friends, two of whom are 'pukka kaminey' types. That apart, if Sai was to see my 'Chashme Buddoor', she wouldn't recognise it," said Dhawan, a director who is an expert in churning out hit comedies like "Hero No.1", "Biwi No. 1" and "Partner".
The 1981 movie starred Farooque Sheikh, Deepti Naval, Rakesh Bedi, Ravi Baswani and Saeed Jaffery, while the new one features Ali Zafar, Taapsee Pannu, Siddharth, Divyendu.

But the buzz is also quite strong for its new version, which features Ali Zafar, Siddharth, Taapsee Pannu and Divyendu.

While on one hand, the cinema lovers all over were happy with the fact that the 1983 cult classic Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro was being re-released in a new, technically enhanced avatar, on the other hand, the film's cast was not happy with the way it was released and without any fanfare. A visibly upset Naseeruddin Shah (who was the lead star along with Ravi Baswani) was very vocal about his displeasure as he said that he was very much pissed off with the way Nfdc has released the film without any publicity at all. On the other hand, Satish Kaushik (who played one of the pivotal characters in the film) stated that one does wish they had applied more thrust to the marketing and release. At the same time, he also added that one needs budgets for that which Nfdc of course won't have.

Films that gained a ‘cult following’ over the years, despite being unnoticed on release
Back in the 80s, all we had was Doordarshan. Anything you wanted to know about cinema, mythology, world literature, astronomy, science fiction, history; it was all there – right in your living room. So, in that glorious age of kitsch, I remember noticing this bubbly-looking but rather demure young woman in two films – one was Raghuveer Yadav-starrer Massey Sahib (1985) and this obscure film with an interesting name – In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones (1989). By the third time I caught her on TV, she had won a Booker Prize for fiction, for her book The God of Small Things. She was Arundhati Roy – the above-mentioned films were made by her then husband, Pradip Krishen. But we’re more interested in the second film – In Which Annie… was about a group of students in an Architecture College in Delhi,...

After a huge impact in Rang De Basanti, Siddharth has been busy with his South Indian assignments. He is back on Mumbai with a riotous role in David Dhawan's Chashme Buddoor. "At the moment I'm doing films in four languages Tamil, Telugu, English and Hindi. That's damn exciting for an actor who always complains about the quality of work offered to him. Mera number aa gaya. I am in Mumbai when Mumbai wants me. Nothing substantial has been offered to me. When I am in Mumbai I am asked about my 6-pack. Every young actor in Bollywood has started looking the same. That's scary. The only way I get work in Mumbai is if the A-listers in Bollywood turn down films. I was the 17th actor approached for Rang De Basanti. I was probably the 17,000th option for Midnight's Children. I am lucky Deepa was in Mumbai long enough to hear about me,...

The casting of David Dhawan's version of Sai Paranjpye's 1981 cult comedy Chashme Baddoor just got even more interesting. After signing Pakistani pop star Ali Zafar for Farouq Shaikh's part, and Tamil star Siddharth for Ravi Baswani's part, David has now signed the relatively-unknown Divyendu Sharma to play the pivotal third protagonist . Divyendu who shot to a certain kind of unexpected fame with his performance as the love-smothered cynical and abusive character Liquid in Luv Sinha's sleeper hit Pyaar Ka Punchnaama, bagged the role in a most bizarre manner. After casting Ali and Siddharth, David couldn't seem to find the right face and personality to play Omi, the part Rakesh Bedi played with laconic humour in Paranjpye's film. Then one day David saw Divyendu in an ad where he was selling satellite channels with his two room-mates. David immediately saw his Omi in Divyendu who after his punch-filled...

At first glance, Ravi Baswani looked a bit sturdier than I'd expected when we met in March last year. His two best-known movie roles — as the roguish bachelor Jai in Chashme Buddoor and as the high-strung photographer Sudhir in Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron — had fixed him in my mind as a wisp of a man permanently in danger of being blown away by a strong breeze, in the style of the great silent-screen comedians. One of the best sight gags in Chashme Buddoor has him leaping nimbly to and fro in a single-minded effort to kick-start a scooter; it's ...

What's common to the films Chasme Budoor, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Lucky-No Time For Love, Bunty Aur Babli, Pyar Tune Kya Kiya and terms like 'comedy', 'class acting' etc... Well, we would have loved to say that the common factor that 'connects' all of the above is 'Ravi Baswani'. The sad news is that Baswani who redefined comedy in his own way in Indian films passed away yesterday. It is indeed a tragic loss not just to Bollywood, but also to mankind, he was also known to be a simple and down to earth man. Ravi suffered a massive heart attack. We at Bollywood Hungama pray for the departed soul, thus wishing that may His soul rest in eternal peace.
