The 65th Grammy Awards take place on Sunday 5 February, with music fans preparing for the rematch of the century: Adele vs Beyoncé.
Both artists are up for Album of the Year, six years after Adele took home the top prize for her third record, 25. The win over Beyoncé’s critically adored surprise album Lemonade was highly controversial; Adele herself famously declared that Beyoncé deserved the prize during her acceptance speech.
This year, the British singer is competing with her record-obliterating fourth album, 30, released in 2021. A four-star review in The Independent praised the songs as “handsomely crafted ballads about love and its various agonies”, with Adele’s voice, as ever, the main draw. “Adele possesses that perfectly imperfect voice, gargantuan and frail all at once,” critic Annabel Nugent wrote. “It’s epic without resorting to showy, melismatic affectations. It yawns into unexpected shapes and makes intonation fun.”
Beyoncé, meanwhile, surprised fans...

The new album from indie-pop band Sports Team opens with a blast of pure euphoria. “Oh yeah, that’s the game,” sings frontman Alex Rice over a rush of student disco guitars. “Life’s hard but I can’t complain.”
Picked apart, the lyrics – from the group’s forthcoming second LP, Gulp! – are revealed to be rather bleak. “The Game”, the outwardly joyous first track, is a laundry of woes confronting Gen Z-ers and millennials in this age of unaffordable housing and gig economy-type zombie jobs. Yet the feeling it communicates is one of exultation and living in the moment.
It isn’t alone in that respect. As the music industry recalibrates after the pandemic, the floodgates have opened on records that revel in catharsis. Chief among them is Beyoncé’s dancefloor epic Renaissance. There is also Rina Sawayama’s Hold The Girl, out this week and featuring shiny-eyed Corrs...

Enter Shikari’s Rou Reynolds has said that a power outage, and not an “act of censorship” was responsible for his microphone being cut on stage at Reading Festival.
The band performed at the annual music festival on Saturday (27 August), during which frontman Reynolds accused water companies of pollution.
“Sort your s*** out,” he had the crowd shouting.
In his review of the day’s events, The Independent’s Mark Beaumont joked that Reynolds delivered “a speech about Tory sewage policy that suffers so many microphone issues you start to suspect that Nadine Dorries is manning the sound desk”.
However, on Sunday (28 August), Reynolds tweeted clarifying what had happened after fans suggested that his sound had been deliberately cut.
“Just to clarify everyone – it wasn’t an act of censorship, it was a power outage at front-of-house. Immense bad luck, and of course bad timing,” he wrote.
“We then had...

Demi Lovato has revealed that her new track “Heaven” is based on the bible verse Matthew 5:30.
In an interview with Los Angeles Times, the 29-year-old singer – who recently updated her pronouns to she/her – said that in her new song “Heaven” from the album Holy Fvck, she sings of choosing pleasure over piety.
“Matthew 5:30 says, ‘If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off; [for] it’s better to lose one part of your body than your entire body to hell.’ That was a Bible verse I heard since I was young – too young to know what masturbation was,” she told the outlet.
“And now, I have my own [line of] sex toys. Masturbation can be a form of self-care, it’s not something to be ashamed of at all,” Lovato added.
Matthew 5:30 says: “Cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee. That one of thy members should perish,...
