With the recent Blu-ray release of Lightning Bug from Image Entertainment, I had a chance to talk with star Ashley Laurence and director Robert Hall. You may know Robert Hall from his effects work or Laid to Rest movies, but his first directorial effort was Lightning Bug in 2004 and it’s not what most people would have expected from him. During our interview time, I talked to him about going with a drama over an effects-heavy movie, revisiting the movie after all these years, and what projects he’s planning to direct in the future.
I know that Lightning Bug is a personal story for you and based on some of your past experiences. Can you tell me a bit about your time growing up in Alabama and how the story eventually evolved into Lightning Bug?
Robert Hall: I moved there when I was nine and I felt like a fish out of water.

I recently interviewed Robert Hall to discuss the Blu-ray release of Lighting Bug. While we’ll be posting the full interview shortly, I wanted to let readers know what he had to say about his remake of Chopping Mall and another movie he’s planning to direct called Rotten Face.
You may not remember hearing about the Chopping Mall remake, because the last we reported on it was back in late 2011. Robert Hall’s Dry County Entertainment acquired the rights to Chopping Mall with plans to go into production in early 2012. We had been wondering if the project had been canceled, but Robert Hall told us that the remake is still moving forward:
“Chopping Mall is still on the slate. We’re working with Roger [Corman] on that and we have it in development. My writing partner, Kevin Bocarde, is doing the heavy lifting right now. He has a script that...

An 80s Roger Corman producton, Chopping Mall, gets lined up for a remake. Albeit one with a supernatural, rather than sci-fi, flavour...
If your idea of a nightmare is a shopping trip to your local shopping centre, then the prospect of the 1986 horror movie Chopping Mall will no doubt terrify you.
The film finds a group of kids partying in a shopping mall after hours (as you do), and being hunted down by security robots who go on a murderous rampage after malfunctioning. It was a Roger Corman production, so it was a schlocky piece of cinema that was far from a masterpiece, but it was reasonably entertaining nonetheless.
The film is the latest 80s horror property, though, to be slated for a remake. Robert Hall is attached to direct, and Hall is also writing the script, with assistance from his production partner Kevin Bocarde.

Robert Hall, the director of "Laid to Rest" and "Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2," has acquired the remake rights to the '80 horror film "Chopping Mall." He and his producing partner Kevin Bocarde will write and produce. The original "Chopping Mall" was produced by Roger Corman and his wife Julie. It was centered around a group of teenagers who become trapped in a shopping mall with killer robots. "It will retain the basic concept of young people trapped in a mall; however, the story will have a darker, supernatural spin," said Bocarde. Hall added: "This is an exciting way to pay homage and honor Roger while also expanding the original film's premise." "Chopping Mall" Trailer:...

More 1980s B-horror movies are being remade for audiences today. Next up—the 1980s “Chopping Mall” about night-time mall security robots on a killing spree. Variety has reported that Dry County Entertainment required the remake rights to the horror movie. The original movie was produced by Roger Corman. According to producer Kevin Bocarde, the new film will not entirely be a straight remake of the original film. “It will retain the basic concept of young people trapped in a mall; however, the story will have a darker, supernatural spin,” he told Variety. Some of Corman’s films that were remade recently included “Death Race and “Piranha 3D.” Sounds like a demonic or ghostly possession of the robots instead of a short circuit. Oh, what will Hollywood come up next? Here’s an old trailer of the 1980s movie: Source: Variety...

Christmas is approaching like a speeding sleigh and that naturally has a lot of people thinking about braving the crowds to get presents for friends and family. But what if the local shopping centre boasted more than just a crush of other bargain hunters? What if the place was patrolled by robots that get a case of Terminator fever and start offing people? That’s the concept behind Chopping Mall, which director Robert Hall wants to remake.It might not surprise you that the 1986 original was produced by schlock king Roger Corman and features a group of distinctly old looking “teens” raving it up for a party in a closed mall. The trouble begins when the building’s security ‘bots have their electronic brains frazzled by a lightning bolt and decided to Kill All Humans.But the new film won’t be a straight remake, according to Variety, as Hall...

If you thought the hordes of deal-seeking shoppers on Black Friday are bad, just imagine if the malls were filled with malicious supernatural entities.

How apropos, as the kids would say. Just in time for Black Friday this, well, Friday after Thanksgiving, comes this grand news that Dry County Entertainment have acquired the remake rights to the 1980s Roger Corman-produced splatter film “Chopping Mall”. The 1986 original was directed by Jim Wynorski (who would go on to direct a slew of ’90s softcore erotic thrillers under a variety of names) and followed eight teenagers trapped after hours in a high tech shopping mall. The kids think it’s all fun and games and proceed to party, until they discover that they are being targeted by murderous high-tech security robots. Lots of bloody chopping, as you might imagine, ensues. Robert Hall will co-write the remake with his partner Kevin Bocarde, with Hall directing sometime next Spring. According to Bocarde, the remake won’t be a straight remake, but rather one that retains “the basic concept...

Sometimes you just need a little gore in your life. I’m talking about the kind of gore that takes a special breed of practical effects artist and not a computer. When it comes to truly alluring bloodletting, occasionally you don’t even need rock-solid plots or actors, as long as the butchery speaks for itself.
If you’ve seen Laid to Rest, you know what I mean. With the fantastic, gruesome kills and ruthless killer, that movie really didn’t need anything more. Yet, who’s going to argue when the sequel brings you better acting, a deeper plot, and continues down that magnificent gore highway?
For those of you who have seen Laid to Rest, you may be wondering just how a sequel can even be possible. Without giving anything away, all I can say is that writers Robert Hall and Kevin Bocarde made it work. Starting from...

Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2 is the sequel to the 2009 film Laid to Rest. Both films were directed by special effects artist Robert Hall and this latest title sees Chromeskull back from near death. Harris has been in a number of thrillers recently e.g. Hatchet II, Stake Land and she seems to be comfortable with her title of Scream Queen. Recently released on At&T's video-on-demand service, Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2 again shows the make up skills of Hall and his company Almost Human, Inc. (Anything Horror). Forget Jason, Freddy, Michael, and all of the rest. There is only one group out there who knows how to cut deeper than anyone else, the MPAA. Recently Rob Hall's upcoming film ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2 went before them, and guess what?!?
They immediately slapped the movie with the dreaded Nc-17 rating. Having already seen the movie, I can tell you as a fact there's no way this wasn't going to happen. Ltr 2 is riddled with some of the most insane bits of violence and kills we've ever seen. Not kidding either. This flick is Nuts, and we love it!
When reached for comment about the rating, director Hall chimed in with the following ...
"I think it's great the MPAA had a problem with almost every kill in the film", says Hall. "If they didn't, we wouldn't have done our jobs correctly. They have a job to do,...

Well, this looks violent and interesting. Director and writer Robert Hall has been busy since Laid to Rest was released late in 2009. A review of this previous title is here: Laid to Rest Review. Now, Hall has brought in more actors and more firepower for ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2, the sequel. Brian Austin Green and Danielle Harris (Hatchet 2) will star and the first bloody trailer for the film is hosted.

In light of the news we received earlier today that Michael Biehn is flexing his director muscle on another project, it's not a huge surprise that he's stepped away from ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2. Who's replacing him? None other than Welsh actor Owain Yeoman.
Yeoman is best known to TV watchers from his roles in "The Mentalist", "Kitchen Confidential", and "The Nine". He's also a classically trained actor who graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London in 2003.
Director Rob Hall penned the Laid to Rest 2 script with producing partner Kevin Bocarde. Hall, Bocarde and Chang Tseng are producing the film under their Dry County Entertainment banner.
Returning for the sequel are original Laid to Rest stars Thomas Dekker (A Nightmare on Elm Street 2010) and Nick Principe, donning the by now familiar mask of ChromeSkull. Along with Yeoman their new co-stars include Brian Austin Green (“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,...

“And we’re back…”
First, introductions are in order. I, Kevin Bocarde, am a lifelong Fango reader (hell, I got my first subscription to Fango at 15). Besides being a huge horror fan, I have been lucky enough to co-write the script for Chromeskull: Laid 2 Rest with the awesome Robert Hall. Robert is running around directing like a madman, thankfully without bladed weapons—well, actually, there were some on day one, so I’m here to give you the skinny on what’s happening in the world of Chromeskull.

Details have been fairly slim on ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2 since it was announced. Nick Principe, however, enthusiastically praised the script written by returning director Rob Hall and Kevin Bocarde. Principe, you recall, played the chrome-faced killer in the previous entry. "I just finished reading the final draft of Laid to Rest 2," he revealed recently. "Oh my f**king God, this is gonna be a crazy ass sequel. Chromey is pissed and everyone gets destroyed. Triple the blood and gore, than the first. You will be happy, ChromeSkull fans. This I promise you." ChromeSkull should be pissed considering what happened to him at the end of the first film.

One of my favorite new gen slasher movies is writer/director Robert Hall's Laid to Rest and the sequel finally starts principal photography on November 1st. Chromeskull: Laid to Rest 2 brings back Chromeskull (Nick Principe) and Thomas Dekker (Sarah Connor Chronicles) from the first film and is eyeing an October 2011 release. Joining in on the slasher fun this time is Brian Austin Green (90210), Michael Biehn (Aliens, The Terminator), Christopher Nelson (The Tripper), Jennifer Blanc (Bereavement), and Danielle Harris (Stakeland, Hatchet II).
Producer Kevin Bocarde says;
"Since the release of the first Laid To Rest, we have been hearing from fans who want to see a sequel. they wanted to know more about chromeskull and more importantly, seeing him do waht he does best. We're thrilled to bring him back to the screen and hopefully we can deliver to all the fans what they want."
Robert Hall adds;

Danielle Harris, Thomas Dekker (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Brian Austin Green, Christopher Nelson, Jennifer Blanc and Michael Biehn are set to star in Laid to Rest 2. Director Robert Hall hopes to begin shooting this November. "You can't really make a Laid to Rest movie and not have the best gore effects," says Hall. "We're doubling the carnage and doubling the fun. I know we raised the bar on the last one, but people have no idea what’s in store in that department for the sequel—it's the original and then some. I'm so happy to have such a stellar cast involved, and I think co-producer Kevin Bocarde and I have come up with a cool way to bring Chromey back without going all nutty and breaking our own rules."...

Last year the direct to DVD horror movie Laid To Rest was a surprise hit among horror fans everywhere, and like any successful horror film a sequel is on the way… From the official press release:
In 2009, writer/director Robert Hall (Lightning Bug, Fear Clinic) introduced horror fans to a new face of horror: ChromeSkull, the mysterious and relentless killer who hunts down young women and records their grisly demises, all while donning a iconic silver skull mask and a video camera strapped to his shoulder. And while it may have seemed like ChromeSkull was dead at the end of the first Laid to Rest, every horror fan knows that evil never really dies.
Now Hall and the rest of the team behind the original are getting ready to take their modern slasher franchise to a boiling point. ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2 will begin principal photography on November 1st in Los Angeles.
