I don't know if it's going to be exciting as it sounds, but this $8 mill movie (which already had one make in 1963) is being adapted from Alexander Belyayev's novel by Sergei Bodrov (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan). The story is based around a man basically stuck to his ocean environment due to a transplant of a set of shark gills. Story boards, further info, and 1962 trailer below.

Bavaria Film Partners, Trikita Entertainment and Lumiq Studios are teaming for an $8 million English-language film adaptation of Alexander Belyaev’s 1928 sci-fi novel "Amphibian Man" reports Screen Daily.
Using the latest underwater filming technology, the story will tell of a child who whose maverick scientist father performs a life-saving transplant on him - a set of shark gills.
The experiment is a success but it limits the young man's ability to interact with the world outside his ocean environment.
"Mongol" filmmaker Sergei Bodrov is penning the project which will be shot in Germany, Italy and Malta. However no cast or director is yet set.
Vladimir Chebotaryov and Gennadi Kazansky helmed a previous adaptation in 1962.

Russian director Sergei Bodrov's (Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan) new movie, Seventh Son, was first introduced at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con during a presentation hosted by Legendary Pictures. Since that time, virtually nothing has been heard about the fantasy action adventure that stars Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart) as an aging knight. With production currently underway, Lionsgate and Warner Bros. have finally offered a few more clues about the movie, releasing a detailed plot synopsis and a piece of concept art reminiscent of The Lord of the Rings.

Even as Reverse Shot carries on working its way through the Spielberg oeuvre for the second time — the latest entry comes from Eric Hynes: "His cinema telescopes and microscopes, making big what's small, and near what's far, and always making you feel — both physically and emotionally — the ingenious contraption at work. Rarely has his marriage of form and feeling worked as fluidly and guilelessly as it did in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, a film of colossal ambition that plays as intimate, of heart-thumping sensations that register as cosmic, of wondrous spectacle that in the end just sings" — the new Film Quarterly features Jonathan Rosenbaum on what more than a few believe to be Spielberg's best work: "A.I. is a film about having been programmed emotionally — something that the cinema does to us all, and a subject that my first book, Moving Places, attempted to explore. Today sees the release of "The Hunger Games," the much anticipated adaptation of the popular young adult novel series about a future in which children are forced to compete in a fight to the death for the entertainment of the upper class, and to help their district fight off starvation. The books have been bestsellers, and Lionsgate have pegged the film to be their own answer to another hugely popular teen-skewing franchise, the vampire romance "Twilight." And it looks as if the gamble has paid off, with most prognosticators pegging the film to open well over $100 million in the U.S. this weekend.
But all things come to an end, and while "The Hunger Games" is only just hitting theaters, sequel "Catching Fire" is already set for release in November 2013, with final "Mockingjay" presumably following another eighteen months or so after that. And when you figure in that "Harry Potter...

We've been hearing about The Last Photograph from producer and writer Zack Snyder since late 2007. Since then directors like Sergei Bodrov and Niels Arden Oplev have been attached to direct the film that is said to still star Sean Penn and Christian Bale. Now Twitch says Snyder himself will step up to direct after finishing production Man of Steel. The material is something quite different for Snyder as the story follows two men who are inspired by a photograph to travel to war-torn Afghanistan. Below are a few more details on The Last Photograph as well as an update on Warner Bros' revenge film Motor City moving forward. With The Last Photograph, the story specifically follows a war correspondent (Bale) who witnesses and is the only survivor of an attack on a group of Americans. Meanwhile Penn would play a retired ex-special ops soldier who comes to the scene ...

With all the news coming out of Comic-Con, it's impossible for us to be everywhere at once. You just never know what's going on where. Case in point ....
Our friends over at CinemaBlend nabbed a couple of photos of some concept art for films not even close to shooting yet over at the Warner Brothers booth: The Seventh Son and Paradise Lost. Click on the images below for a better look!
Sergei Bodrov's The Seventh Son starsJeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Ben Barnes and Alicia Vikander. Barnes will star as "Tom Ward", a young boy training to be an exorcist in the 1700's who must learn how to exorcise ghosts, contain witches, and bind boggarts. Trouble begins when he's tricked into releasing the most evil witch in the world. Jeff Bridges has signed on to star as an exorcist. The Seventh Son was formerly known as The Spook’s Apprentice...

The boys over at Cinemablend decided to take photos of the concept art on display at the San Diego Comic-Con panel for upcoming Warner Bros. films (you know, the panel for three non-comic films that aren't even shot yet). One of the two projects is Alex Proyas' Paradise Lost, the Bradley Cooper-starrer that will be shot using motion capture technology. The project tells the story of the epic war in heaven between archangels Michael and Lucifer, and will be crafted as an action vehicle that will include aerial warfare, possibly shot in 3D. Inside you'll find the concept art featuring some of the rough terrains being conceptualized. Also shared with the Comic-Con audience was art for Sergei Bodrov's The Seventh Son, starring Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, Ben Barnes and Alicia Vikander. Barnes will star as "Tom Ward"....

I was liveblogging what went down at the panel for Legendary Entertainment, and if you want the blow-by-blow details of what Guillermo del Toro, Jeff Bridges and Bradley Cooper have been talking about, check that out here. You might have also caught this shot showing off the logo and title treatment for Pacific Rim and one bit of concept art for Paradise Lost. But that was just the tip of the concept iceberg-- for the full collection of concept art from The Seventh Son and Paradise Lost, take a look below. The Seventh Son is an adaptation of a fantasy novel, starring Jeff Bridges and Ben Barnes and directed by Mongol's Sergei Bodrov. Dark City director Alex Proyas is adapting Milton's Paradise Lost, which will star Bradley Cooper as Lucifer. You can check out all the concept art below, snapped from the screen in the middle of the hall-- yes,...

We've heard of planning ahead, but this is getting ridiculous! Buy a 2013 calendar now, kids, and mark February 15th as the date Warner Bros. will release Legendary Pictures' The Seventh Son. Assuming, of course, those pesky Mayans are wrong about the world ending in 2012.
Ben Barnes (pictured right; Dorian Gray, The Chronicles of Narnia) landed the starring role opposite Oscar winner Jeff Bridges in this adaptation of Joseph Delaney's young-adult series. Barnes will play Tom, the young apprentice to an exorcist (Bridges) who combats ghosts and witches in the 1700s. The pair must battle the queen of evil (Julianne Moore) as Tom falls for a young witch (Alicia Vikander).
Sergei Bodrov is directing; Thunder Road's Basil Iwanyk, Legendary's Thomas Tull and Lionel Wigram are producing; and Jon Jashni and Alysia Cotter are exec producing.
Production begins September 13th in Vancouver.

It feels like it was just yesterday I was pouring over this year's Thursday schedule at San Diego Comic-Con to put together The Discerning Film Nerd's Guide to the best programming.
Wait, that wasn't yesterday, that was like three hours ago. Boy, time sure doesn't fly when you're missing out on Comic-Con.
Anyway, Comic-Con's Friday schedule is now up as well and once again I've poured over it to bring you the most intriguing looking panels. Remember that I don't include anything from Hall H, which is a whole other beast, although I were ever going to wait in line for three hours in the hot San Diego sun behind a dude in a Chewbacca mask who smells like feet, Friday would be the day I did it. First glimpses of the "Spider-Man" reboot, Soderbergh's "Haywire," and Nicolas Cage and Neveldine/Taylor's "Ghost Rider?" I'm ready to startin hitchhiking...

Though The Avengers, Batman and Superman are more than likely not going to be swinging into San Diego Comic-Con this year, Spider-Man will be out in force. The schedule for Friday July 22 has been released and the highlights include that Legendary Panel we wrote about a few days ago [1] (though it's not in Hall H), a panel on Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson's The Adventures of Tintin and a Sony Pictures panel that includes Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Total Recall and, yes, Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man. Check out a bunch of the highlights, with commentary, after the jump. (And don't forget about Thursday [2] where Peter will be on the Masters of the Web panel.) For the full schedule, head over to the official site [3]. Below are just some of the highlights with my comments in block quote. 10:15-11:15 Star Trek: The Captains— William Shatner...

And they said Comic Con 2011 wouldn't be exciting. I'm not entirely sure who "they" is, but I know people were saying it!
The mere fact that Legendary Pictures is coming to Comic Con is pretty amazing. Legendary has produced many geek favorites over the years, from The Dark Knight to Watchmen to 300. Yet they had never before made an appearance at the San Diego Comic Con. But now, arguably the year that studios are turning their back on Comic Con, Legendary is making its long awaited appearance. And its bringing a couple friends with it.
Legendary Pictures panel will begin Friday, July 22. Moderated by Geoff Beoucher of the Los Angeles Times, the film will focus on four films in particular:
-Pacific Rim, the monster movie from Guillermo del Toro. Actors Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day and Rinko Kikuch will be there, as well as writer Travis Beacham and Guillermo del Toro himself.

Most film panels at this year's San Diego Comic Con are for films opening later this year, while a few are for movies in the first half of 2012.
Now, Legendary Pictures is breaking out on its own (rather than combining with Warner Brothers) and will provide their first ever standalone panel for four films, all of which won't likely hit the multiplex until 2013.
"Pacific Rim" will have a panel with director Guillermo del Toro, writer Travis Beacham and cast members Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, and Rinko Kikuchi.
"Seventh Son" will have Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes, Alicia Vikander and director Sergei Bodrov showing up.
Bradley Cooper and director Alex Proyas will do a panel about their ambitious planned adaptation of Milton's "Paradise Lost".
Finally, and most unexpectedly, writer Mark Protosevich and "Mass Effect" game creator Casey Hudson will talk about the proposed film adaptation of 'Mass'.

He's played Prince Caspian in the "Narnia" series and Oscar Wilde's immortal "Dorian Gray", now British star Ben Barnes is in negotiations to join the fantasy tentpole "The Seventh Son" for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures says Deadline.
Based on Joseph Delaney's children's book series "The Wardstone Chronicles" (aka. "The Last Apprentice"), the story follows a young man named Tom in training to be the apprentice of a 'Spook' (Jeff Bridges), a fighter against evil magic, in the 1700's.
Trouble begins when his friend Alice (Vikander) tricked into releasing the most sinister witch in the world (Julianne Moore). Barnes will replace "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" star Sam Clafin who had been in negotiations for the role until talks fell through.
Sergei Bodrov ("Nomad," "Mongol") directs 'Son' from a script by Max Borenstein and shooting kicks off in September in Vancouver.
