It is not unusual to have a Bollywood film inspired by a book.
A few examples are 3 Idiots, which was adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s Five Point Someone, 7 Khoon Maaf, by Ruskin Bond’s short story Susanne’s Seven Husbands and Lootera by O. Henry’s The Last Leaf and the upcoming 2 States which again is based on Bhagat book.
It is still not unusual for Bollywood to transform stage productions onto the silver screen – for instance the many Shakespeare adaptations such as Omkara, Ram Leela and Maqbool.
However, there is now a Bollywood film that is to be adapted into a theatrical production.
Vishal Bhardwaj, who is famously inspired by Shakespearian tragedies, has been approached by Paris’ Chatelet Theatre to transform the 2013 film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola on stage.
Does this mean that we will see lead actors Imran Khan or Anushka Sharma on stage? Well,we don’t know but Pankaj Kapur,...

Actor John Abraham feels that instead of getting inspired by Hollywood films, Bollywood filmmakers should start adapting stories from books..Most of the time, in our industry we get a lot of inspiration from other films, especially English films. Each year there are numerous movies which come out of the big entertaining world of Bollywood. Some are expected to work and they do turn out to be great hits. For some, it is pretty obvious from the first look itself, that they will be huge box office disappointments and they do stand true to the opinion. Then there are some wonderful movies which may not be on everyone’s list of promising up-comings but they do turn out to be surprise hits. And of course there’s the final type – the movies which everyone looks forward to, which seems to have an all perfect ensemble, which has been on a huge promotion drive even before the title has been decided, which is assumed will be a hit simply because it is from a big production house or has a big star or sometimes because the movie genuinely appears to be different and interesting…...

Once upon a time, films catering to children remained in the precincts of parallel and serious cinema in Bollywood. Over the years, the genre has undergone a seachange, with many filmmakers entwining emotional and educational themes into commercial entertainers not just for children, but for adult viewers as well.In the past decade, filmmakers have tried to cater to children with animation projects like .My Friend Ganesha., .Bal Ganesh., .Hanuman., .Hanuman Returns. and .Ghatothkach.. But they have also experimented with children-related, issue-based themes like .Taare Zameen Par. and .Stanley Ka Dabba. to strike a chord with youngsters. On the occasion of Children.s Day Monday, Ians lists a few children.s films that either tugged at the viewers. heartstrings, or claimed box office success or even garnered critical acclaim..Mr.India. With his masterful adaptations of Shakespeare with Maqbool and Omkara, Vishal Bhardwaj turns to another literary source: Ruskin Bond's short story Susanna's Seven Husbands for Saat Khoon Maaf . A film like Saat Khoon Maaf is likely to be heralded a classic or cult turkey in later years, but for now it is a solid effort on Vishal Bhardwaj's part to attempt a macabre tale like this. If he modernized Shakespeare for Indian audiences, then he creates a dark Southern Gothic mixed with a Greek tragedy in this film.
The movie is shrouded in shadows and adopts film noir techniques to draw the audience into Susanna's twisted world. Right from the striking first shot, Bhardwaj captures our attention with a snivelling Susanna (Priyanka Chopra) and a pistol in her hand. Susanna is hungry for true love in all its glory and finds them in patches with her seven husbands.

'7 Khoon Maaf' (2011)
Starring Priyanka Chopra, Neil Nitin Mukesh, John Abraham, Irrfan Khan, Aleksandr Dyachenko, Annu Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Vivaan Shah
Director Vishal Bhardwaj—best known for his stellar Shakespeare adaptations 'Maqbool' (2003) and 'Omkara' (2006)—turns to literature once again—this time, Ruskin Bond's short story 'Susanna's Seven Husbands'—for his latest film, '7 Khoon Maaf.' While the basis for his films often comes from elsewhere, Bhardwaj is one of the most original Hindi filmmakers today, and he outdoes himself once again with '7 Khoon Maaf.'
Bhardwaj frequently takes commercial actors and shows audiences a very different, artistic side of them. He consistently brings out the best in his performers. Sometimes, it's merely his inspired casting that makes actors look good. Either way, it would behoove big-time stars to clamor for even small roles in his films. Priyanka Chopra has been his biggest beneficiary.

Saat Khoon Maaf has been intriguing many a Bollywood fan since we first saw the teaser with Priyanka Chopra saying, "This time I am going to drink his blood" with that maniacal laugh. With each new reveal we learned more about the story and her character and wanted to see more! In a role that she says is one of her most challenging, Priyanka plays Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes, a woman looking for love so much that she marries seven times over the course of 35 years. The film is directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and based on a short story by Ruskin Bond, who also did the screenplay. The seven husbands are played by Neil Nitin Mukesh, John Abraham, Irrfan Khan, Aleksandr Dyachenko, Anu Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah and Vivaan Shah. We were lucky to catch the actress for a quick 10 minutes and she gave us some great answers about playing Susanna, working with Vishal,...

It takes a really keen eye to visualise a film in a short story. Then to turn it into a full-fledged film is a different task altogether. And Vishal Bharadwaj has done exactly that to Ruskin Bond's short story, Susanna's Seven Husbands. It's a commendable effort as he has crafted a body (7 Khoon Maaf) out of a skeleton (Susanna's Seven Husbands). Love knows no boundaries and the vivacious Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes (Priyanka Chopra)...
