Oscar-winner Emma Thompson stars and winningly adapts the 'Nurse Matilda' books by Christianna Brand into a surefire family pleaser. She plays Nanny McPhee, the formidable childminder who suddenly appears at the home of six unruly brats and their feckless father (Colin Firth). Rewardingly focusing on character rather than special effects, this is a lesson in family movie-making that audiences of all ages will love to learn.

The eternal lesson-teacher comes when you don.t want her and leaves when you don.t want her to go and have grown to love her. Emma Thompson.s adaptation of the Nurse Matilda books by Christianna Brand returns for another go round and is a charming, magical trip for the family. warts, unibrow, snaggle tooth and all. Her children, Norman (Asa Butterfield), Megsie (Lil Woods), and Vincent (Oscar Steer), are driving her mad, the senile Mrs. Docherty (Maggie Smith) is making a mess of her store, and her unscrupulous brother-in-law Phil (Rhys...

The Other Guys: "It's meathead humor -- homophobic, macho bravado oneupmanship -- but as meathead humor goes, it's inspired, tinged with off-the-wall splats of pop-absurdity. When Will Ferrell is on his game, no one does it better -- it's early Adam Sandler's temperamental explosions stretched into a full length movie and tossed with goat fucking, blasphemy, and juvenile punchlines. But it's also comedically brilliant, and you find yourself repeating some of the better lines to yourself in the hopes that you can hang on to them before IMDb populates their quote section, because there are 15 to 20 "punch you in the ovary" gems. All that was really missing from The Other Guys, besides the fact that this brand of humor isn't new anymore, was a Brick Tamland character, though Sam Jackson and Dwayne Johnson -- in their brief appearances -- help close that gap." - Dustin Rowles

It's just as well that the sequel to 2005's Nanny McPhee has already earned close to $63 million abroad, for it certainly won't appeal to anyone who didn't watch (and enjoy) the original movie. It also doesn't help that, on this side of the pond, the filmmakers saw fit to confront Yanks with the following tagline: "Who's Your Nanny?" Back in England, however, this sequel is properly known as Nanny McPhee & the Big Bang, which is essentially what you'd expect from this franchise with the added twist that this adventure (presumably) travels back in time, so that the titular character can attend to a different family in need of a helping hand (not to mention the opportunity to wave that magic stick around a bit more).

When actors craft movie roles for themselves they tend to play to their own ever-active egos. So Matt Damon becomes the hyper-intelligent wunderkind of Good Will Hunting. Ben Stiller transforms into a male model in Zoolander. Vincent Gallo casts Chloe Sevigny to...
It's a surprise, then, that the character closest to Emma Thompson's heart is Nanny McPhee, a snaggletooth wielding, boil encrusted uber-nanny whose brand of cool discipline terrifies and charms in equal measure. 2005's original was scripted by Thompson and based on the Nurse Matilda series of books by Christianna Brand and made an impressive amount of money at the box office.
The sequel diverts from the books inasmuch as the eponymous Nanny doesn't return to the children of the first film but rather finds a new family in need of help, governed by frazzled mother Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal). We're out of 19th Century England and onto...

I didn't watch Nanny McPhee when the movie was released in 2005. Frankly, I found the image of the lovely Emma Thompson done up with hairy moles and snaggletooth quite frightening. However, after seeing Nanny McPhee Returns this week, I learned my own lesson from Nanny "little C, big P" McPhee -- don't judge a book by its cover. Award-winning actress and writer Thompson reprises her role as screenwriter and star, but this time she's also the executive producer, which might explain some of the big names in Nanny McPhee Returns. However, it's not just the stars in the cast that make this film enjoyable. Thompson's screenwriting skills provide the youngest members of the cast with well-developed characters.

Chicago – With the sequel “Nanny McPhee Returns” (also known as “Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang” overseas) about to be released in theaters, Universal has taken the opportunity to release the original 2005 Emma Thompson on Blu-ray. This is a standard import of already-available DVD special features to the HD market in an attempt to spark interest after kids see the new film but it’s still entertaining family filmmaking that’s certainly worth a look if your rugrats have yet to see it.

Emma Thompson's arrival at the character of Nanny McPhee is a bit nontraditional. Having adapted the screenplay for the original film herself from Christianna Brand's 1960's "Nurse Matilda" series, Thompson tackled the sequel as purely that, drafting an original idea rather than re-adapting one of Brand's subsequent "Matilda" novels. The result is Nanny McPhee Returns (released in England as Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang ), a story that brings Thompson's magical (if not entirely attractive) British nanny to 1940's England where Isabel Green (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is trying to run a farm and raise five children (three of her own and two relatives) while her husband is away fighting the war. When the two sets of children began a war of their own, McPhee arrives in the...

I was not particularly fond of the first .Nanny McPhee. movie released in 2005. While I found the cast, headed by Emma Thompson as the magical nanny, appealing, the film was ultimately unrewarding. So to my surprise, the sequel, simply called .Nanny McPhee Returns,. is not only satisfying, it.s also quite delightful.
Just like the first film, this one is also written by Thompson based on characters created by Christianna Brand from the .Nurse Matilda. books. The Academy award-winning actress and screenwriter also returns as the unusual and hideous-looking woman who calls herself a .government nanny..
Maggie Gyllenhaal stars as Isabel Green, a mother of three who is nearing her wits ends. Her husband, Rory (Ewan McGregor), is off to war and she.s left alone to take care of the farm and the family. To make matters worse, Isabel must deal with her brother-in-law, Phil (Rhys Ifans), who has...

HollywoodNews.com: Nanny McPhee Returns to the big screen on August 20 and she’s bringing some backup from Hogwarts with her! Academy Award winning actress Emma Thompson, who both wrote the screenplay and stars as the titular character, returns to teach discipline to another set of naughty children a set of five “very important lessons”, in her own, magical way. This story is about a mother (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who is trying to take care of her children while her husband (Ewan McGregor) is away at war, when her family expands to include two very spoiled cousins.
The film also stars Thompson’s Harry Potter co-stars Ralph Fiennes (Lord Voldemort) as Lord Gray; Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall) as Mrs. Docherty; and Rhys Ifans (Xenophilius Lovegood) as Uncle Phil. The first nanny McPhee movie also starred Imelda Staunton, who plays the nastily pink Delores Umbridge in the Harry Potter series.

Emma Thompson continues to weave her spell in Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, while the national treasure that is Dr Feelgood is celebrated in Oil City Confidential
Emma Thompson is a national treasure. Having won a screenplay Oscar translating Jane Austen's very particular prose for the cinema, the assured writer-performer brings an equally delightful touch to her ongoing adaptations of Christianna Brand's Nurse Matilda stories. Admittedly the first Nanny McPhee movie was a hard act to follow – a latterday Scary Mary Poppins which became an enduring home-viewing hit (no child's DVD shelf should be without a copy). In Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, Thompson reapplies the warty facial rubber to play the lovable disciplinarian whose Poppins-esque motto is "When you need me, but do not want me, then I must stay; when you want me, but no longer need me, then I have to go."

Emma Thompson vowed to use adult humour in the Nanny McPhee movies as a tribute to her late father's quirky children's show The Magic Roundabout.
The British actress adapted the Nanny McPhee stories from Christianna Brand's Nurse Matilda books and they have become firm favourites for kids, with the 2005 original grossing $122 million (£76 million) at the international box office.
Thompson confesses she took inspiration for the film - as well as the current sequel Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang - from her writer/producer father Eric, who courted controversy with his scripts for the U.K. version of The Magic Roundabout.
And the star admits she always aims to write stories which make herself laugh first and foremost.
She tells British chatshow host Jonathan Ross, "(Nanny McPhee) is an homage to my dad and to The Magic Roundabout and to the fact he'd done these funny cartoons for kids and he'd get letters from mothers saying, 'How dare you use phrases like this for children, they'll never understand it,' and he said, 'Well, why would you write differently for children? They're just children who haven't lived as long as we have, what's the point in talking down to them?'
"I have to write something that makes me laugh that I like and then hope everybody else is going to like it."...

Director: Rodrigo Garcia
Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.
Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The sequel to 2006's family comedy Nanny McPhee sort of came out of nowhere recently when it was mentioned as an aside in a Variety article saying Ralph Fiennes may take an uncredited cameo role in the feature for Universal Pictures, but since then Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang has become a living breathing feature and today we get a nice little cast list for the film whose original was well liked by critics and earned over $120 million in worldwide box-office. Emma Thompson is back to reprise her role as the title character, a magic-wielding governess, and this time she will be joined by Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans, Maggie Smith and Asa Butterfield reports Variety. Emma Thompson has told MTV she’s ditching Hogwarts for her London job. When confronted with a scheduling conundrum, reprising Professor Sybil Trelawney in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows or shooting the second of the Nanny McPhee films, she had to make a choice.
“I’m making my own Nanny McPhee next year,” she declared. “They mean much more to me.”
Thompson wrote and starred in the 2005 film, based on Christianna Brand’s Nurse Matilda novels. She always envisioned the project as a trilogy and the second film was well along before Potter’s two-part adaptation of the final J.K. Rowling novel was determined.
“The working title is Nanny McPhee and The Big Bang,” she said. “It’s not a sequel, actually, it’s a new story.
“[The second film] is set one hundred years later; the only thing that is the same is Nanny McPhee. It’s about two families: A family of country children,...

Colin Firth is in negotiations to star opposite Emma Thompson in the family comedy Nanny McPhee for director Kirk Jones. Shooting starts in April around London, with Working Title toppers Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner producing along with Three Strange Angels topper Lindsay Doran. Thompson also wrote the screenplay, adapted from the Nurse Matilda book series by Christianna Brand. The stories follow a magical nanny and the seven worst children in the world. Firth would play the father of the children. Doran has been shepherding the project since 1997, when she was head of MGM specialty unit United Artists. When she stepped down for a production deal at the studio, she took the project with her. Working Title recently signed on to produce with her. Bevan and Fellner have a previous relationship with Firth, having worked with him on Bridget Jones's Diary. He is in front of the cameras opposite Renee Zellweger on the sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. Firth is repped by ICM.
