Madeleine Gavin’s Sundance award-winning documentary “Beyond Utopia” has garnered the best documentary and best doc editing honors at the 24th annual Woodstock Film Festival.
The documentary, which was recently acquired by Roadside Attractions, is vying for Academy Award attention.
Using hidden camera footage, the doc follows the high-stakes journey that a handful of desperate families make in order to defect from North Korea — a country with the most brutal regime on earth, led by a dictator, Kim Jong-un.
Doc jurors included directors Barbara Kopple (“Harlan County USA”) Richard Rowley (“ Kingdom of Silence”) and Heidi Ewing (“Jesus Camp”).
“This year’s winner is an astonishingly intimate, white-knuckle thriller following families trying to escape North Korea,” the jurors said in a joint statement. “Stitched together from raw, first person footage, it is impossible not to feel the heart-breaking courage as a family clings to each other during a nighttime crossing of the Mekong River.

Exclusive: Freeform has opted not to proceed with While You Were Breeding, the upcoming Kristin Newman hourlong comedy series based on her memoir, Deadline has learned. Producers of the series, from Freeform Studios, will have the opportunity to shop it elsewhere.
The 10-episode series had wrapped production and was headed into post-production when it paused days into the WGA strike. Newman on May 13 wrote an emotional Facebook post explaining her decision to shut down post-production.
As a result, While You Were Breeding, starring Chelsea Frei, missed its August premiere date. After a review of Freeform’s pipeline in the context of Disney’s companywide content spend trim and emphasis on curation, it was determined that the comedy no longer fit the linear network’s programming strategy, sources said.

The Other Two, the comedy series starring Heléne Yorke, Drew Tarver and Molly Shannon, is coming to a close with its third season on Max.
However, rather than being canceled, the decision was made by Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider, co-creators of the buzzy comedy, who said that they have run out of ways to “humiliate” Tarver.
“It is bittersweet to say goodbye to the Dubek family after three seasons, but we always knew, both creatively and personally, that this was where we wanted to end their stories,” the pair said. “And because we are quite literally out of ways to humiliate Drew Tarver, so what’s the point?”
The move comes ahead of the third-season finale, which sees Shannon’s billionaire mogul mom Pat and her ex-lover/manager Streeter (Ken Marino) strategize how to broach difficult conversations with her kids, Cary (Tarver) and Brooke (Yorke). The episode airs Thursday,...

The writers strike has shut down a slew of TV series. Behind the statistics, there is a lot of heartache as every show is someone’s creation and every suspension affects a lot of people involved in it.
Veteran comedy showrunner Kristin Newman lifted the curtain on that side of the process in an emotional Facebook post Saturday announcing that her upcoming Freeform series, While You Were Breeding, has shut down post-production. Knowing that it was “the right thing to do” to make the strike “as short as humanly possible” did not make the decision less painful, Newman admitted. She also acknowledged “Freeform, who chose to do what this entire strike is about — value the voice of the writer/creator.”
Here is her post:

Jessica Chastain responded to the social media frenzy following her romantic red carpet moment with her “Scenes From a Marriage” co-star Oscar Isaac with a reference to the iconic couple Morticia and Gomez Addams from “Addams Family.”
Isaac, who previously voiced Gomez in the 2019 computer-animated film “The Addams Family,” certainly channeled that perpetually frisky character, as he kissed Chastain’s arm during the “Scenes From a Marriage” premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
During the red carpet premiere, Isaac appeared to be enraptured by Chastain, gazing at her and leaning down to kiss her arm, before the two embraced and giggled in front of the cameras. The pair kept up the appearance throughout the premiere, with the two holding hands as they walked and even sharing a kiss.
Several fans did pick up on “Addams Family” reference, one noting “Oscar Isaac channeling his inner Gomez Addams.”

Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain spoke this morning about some of the challenges behind new TV drama Scenes From A Marriage which is debuting at the Venice Film Festival.
Adapted from Ingmar Bergman’s lauded 1973 Swedish miniseries, the HBO mini-series re-examines Bergman’s iconic depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple. Chastain plays Mira, a confident, ambitious tech executive left unfulfilled by her marriage. Isaac is Jonathan, a cerebral and accommodating philosophy professor desperate to keep their relationship intact.
The new drama heralds from acclaimed Israeli TV writer-director Hagai Levi, known for series including In Treatment, The Affair and Our Boys.
Chastain admitted that the project was an intense one to make: “It felt incredibly exposing”, she said. “It was hard to go home and leave it at work. Part of myself was in it.”

Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain grapple with the complexities of love in HBO’s limited series “Scenes From a Marriage,” which released its first trailer. The highly anticipated remake will debut on HBO on September 12.
The original 1973 miniseries was written and directed by legendary Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman. “Scenes From a Marriage” traced the story of a wealthy married couple across a decade, from the relationship’s demise to its reconciliation and beyond. The series was based on Bergman’s own relationship with muse and partner Liv Ullmann, who toplined the original with Erland Josephson, to whom he was married to from 1965 to 1970. In 1974, the original was condensed from its six parts to a three-hour movie for an American release.
The modern-day iteration of the series is co-created, written and directed by Hagai Levi, the co-creator and writer behind the Golden Globe-winning series “The Affair,” which also explored a tumultuous marriage.

The Woodstock Film Festival will resume indoor screenings at its 22nd annual edition this fall, and also will recognize Neon founder and CEO Tom Quinn with a career honor.
This year’s festival will run from September 30 to October 3. It has carved out a notable place in the fall fest circuit because of its location, which is 110 miles north of New York City and also close to a number of film industry figures in the Hudson Valley. The surrounding region has also become more active in terms of film and TV production in recent years, adding multiple new soundstages.
Quinn will receive the festival’s 2021 Honorary Trailblazer Award. Before Covid-19 turned the 2020 edition into a hybrid affair with drive-ins and online screenings, Quinn had been scheduled to get the award last year, on the heels of Neon’s triumph with Parasite. HBO really wants you to look forward to their content this year. To that end, the network recently dropped a Trailer for their impending 2021 shows. There’s a bunch of interesting ones, but chief among them is a miniseries remake of the Ingmar Bergman classic Scenes From a Marriage. Much like the Swedish original aired as several episodes on television, so too will this one. Here, Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac will be the couple at the center of the event series. Those two obviously have worked together before, notably in A Most Violent Year, so watching them duke it out again is going to be a real treat. HBO has revealed first look footage at its highly anticipated “Scenes from a Marriage” remake, starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain. Originally written and directed by Ingmar Bergman, the 1973 miniseries starred Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson as an affluent married couple whose marriage is charted across a decade, from disintegration to reconciliation and back again. The new limited series is co-created, written, and directed by Hagai Levi, who last examined a discordant marriage throughout five seasons on “The Affair,” which he co-created with Sarah Treem. The project marks a reunion for Chastain and Isaac, who led J.C. Chandor’s 2014 film “A Most Violent Year.”

FX may just be dizzy from the buzz of the Emmy’s, but with shows that are crushing in the ratings, it isn’t much of a surprise that the network has renewed new shows, Atlanta and Better Things.
Not only have the shows done well, but in this day and age, when shows perform well in certain areas, you would have to wonder about not renewing them. Atlanta not only managed the best scripted comedy premiere on basic cable in years, but it grew after that, and Better Things convincingly scored FX’s most female-driven audience.
As if the ratings weren’t enough, the network has more to go on than you know, because they’ve seen more episodes, and both of these shows improve as they go.
And, perhaps the most important thing in play here is that FX is a pretty savvy network, and they know that...

“One Mississippi” This dark comedy, loosely inspired by comic Tig Notaro‘s life follows Notaro as she returns to her childhood hometown in Mississippi to deal with the unexpected death of her beloved mother. Reeling from her own recently declining health, Notaro struggles to deal with her emotionally cold stepfather and tries to cope with losing the one person who truly understood her. This show is a hit from start to finish and it’s not surprising given the creative talent involved: the executive producers are Nicole Holofcener (who also directed the pilot), Louis C.K. and M.Blair Breard (the talents behind C.

Tig Notaro will be the focus of a new series for Amazon Instant Video. The streaming video-on-demand company has ordered a pilot for an unnamed comedy show starring the stand-up comedian and written by Notaro and Oscar-winning Juno scribe Diablo Cody.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, who originally broke the story, the upcoming Amazon pilot will be a semi-autobiographical piece based on Notaro’s life, her struggles with breast cancer, and her comedic career. Amazon released a description of the series: "Tig Notaro has just recovered from an abdominal disease that has left her gaunt, wasted, exhausted, and pretty much stripped of everything except her finely honed sense of the absurd. Abruptly summoned home to Pass Christian, Miss., to take her ailing mother off life support, Tig finds herself dealing with her clingy girlfriend, her dysfunctional Gulf Coast family and the loss of the one person who held everything together.

While some of these panels are recorded and later made available to the public (I believe that's the plan with the "Transparent" one), FX didn't film this. But it was memorable enough — particularly since C.K. doesn't do...
