Exclusive: There is a hot bidding war heating up for Mattel’s animated take of Bob the Builder with heavy interest from Netflix, Amazon MGM Studios, and DreamWorks Animation and others. We hear that offers have been made, and that no one is merely circling for this animated feature which speaks greatly to the Latino and Hispanic community.
The project, which we told you about last month, has Jennifer Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions producing with ShadowMachine (which was behind Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio) and In the Heights star Anthony Ramos. In fact, it was Ramos idea to deliver a Bob the Builder set in Puerto Rico, one which is about the resilience of the Latino culture. Bob’s motto in Spanish: “Si se puede” aka “Yes we can.” Felipe Vargas is adapting.

Mark Gustafson, who alongside Guillermo del Toro directed 2022’s Oscar-winning animated feature Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, has died at 64 following a heart attack. Del Toro confirmed the news on social media, writing that Gustafson was “a pillar of stop-motion animation- a true artist. A compassionate, sensitive and mordantly witty man. A Legend- and a friend that inspired and gave hope to all around him.”
Gustafson’s career began in the early 80s when he was hired as a Pa at the storied Will Vinton Studios, under the veteran Claymation master behind The PJs and films such as The Adventures of Mark Twain and Walter Murch’s Return to Oz in 1985, on which Gustafson collaborated. Gustafson was the Lead Animator and co-wrote the story for the TV comedy special Meet The Raisins! in 1988, which was spun off into the series The Californian Raisin Show a year later. He was the...

Peacock has unveiled the trailer for In The Know, an adult animation series which combines stop-motion animation and live-action interviews, from Zach Woods, Mike Judge and Brandon Gardner.
Co-created by Woods, Gardner and Judge, the public radio parody chronicles the making of NPR’s fictional “third most popular host” Lauren Caspian’s radio program, where he conducts in-depth interviews with guests, including Kaia Gerber, Ken Burns, Finn Wolfhard, Norah Jones, Mike Tyson, Hugh Laurie, Jorge Masvisdal and more.
In one interview Caspian asks Hugh Laurie, “what should we do about Meghan Markle,” to which an emotionless Laurie responds, “I don’t know that any action is required.”
Caspain also tells a befuddled Jonathan Van Ness that he’s a sapiosexual who “once got an erection by reading Plato’s The Cave.” Other guests include Norah Jones, Nicole Byer, Roxane Gay, and Tegan and Sara,...

Freeform has released the first trailer for its new adult animated comedy Praise Petey, which follows how one modern woman will manage her deceased father’s cult.
The two-minute first look teases New Yorker and “It Girl” Petra aka “Petey” grappling with her life turning upside down when she must move from her big-city life to a place called New Utopia. It’s a community her father founded, only it’s not like most. Here, everyone’s part of a cult. Even worse? They believe Petey’s their prophesized savior.
“You being here means the prophecy of the great daughter’s return is fulfilled,” John Cho’s character says in a southern twang.
“Is this town doing Ok?” Petey asks, before Kiersey Clemons’ character responds, “Nah, we’re starving.”
But Petey doesn’t want to fulfill the prophecy of the daughter returned. Instead, she wants to “girlboss” her way out...

Freeform is tapping into a genre that hasn't aired on the network yet with Praise Petey.
The cabler went public with the trailer for its star-studded new series on Thursday, and it's poised to be a big hit.
"Petey aka Petra begins the series as an NYC' It Girl' with everything figured out, until her well-curated life comes crashing down," the official description reads.
"As luck would have it, a mysterious gift from her deceased father gives her a new lease on life – taking over as leader of his small-town cult New Utopia."
"As Petey leans into her new role as a 'girl boss,' she discovers what it means to be a leader and how to find her voice as she tries to modernize her late father's small-town cult."
It's a compelling hook for a series, but we're sure the biggest hook here will be the cast.

Both are continuing the partnership fostered with ShadowMachine Animation during the production of their highly lauded collaborative effort, which nabbed Netflix its very first Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

Based on an original idea from Gustafason, the series follows two brothers, who run an old gas station deep in the Great Basin desert of Nevada, when their lives are upended by a passing stranger who unlocks a mystery involving their family history. The puzzle further unfolds in 1969 with the exploits of a reluctant cosmonaut as he tries to be the first man to reach the moon. As these parallel stories cross time and space, they reveal truths about love, ambition, and brake fluid.
Gustafson, Bulkley, and Campodonico will exec produce.

After joining Guillermo del Toro on the project over 10 years ago, producers Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico finally got to see the fruits of their labor when Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio premiered last year. Del Toro’s Netflix adaptation of the Carlo Collodi story takes place in 1930s Italy, during the Fascist reign of Benito Mussolini. In this story, woodcarver Geppetto (David Bradley) loses his son Carlo in an aerial bombing and carves Pinocchio (Gregory Mann) from the tree at his son’s grave. Bulkley and Campodonico’s animation studio, ShadowMachine, was responsible for the stop-motion animation of the film, and the pair were incredibly excited to go on this long journey with del Toro.

To some, the awards season schedule can feel like an exhausting, soul-crushing experience. But for filmmaker Sarah Polley and Hildur Gudnadóttir, it’s simply the best.
“We’re going to all the events,” said Women Talking and Tár composer Gudnadóttir while standing next to pal Polley on the red carpet at the BAFTA Tea at Four Seasons Los Angeles in Beverly Hills on Saturday. “It’s actually really fun because we don’t see each other very often and it’s been a really great excuse to hang out with Sarah and just go to all the events with her. We’ve been pissing ourselves with laughter.”
Polley, on the circuit for her critically acclaimed Women Talking, called it “weirdly amazing” that others may complain about the demands and dizzying number of red carpets while she’s embracing the chaos. “We’re having the best time ever. We go to everything,...

For acclaimed re-recording mixer Jon Taylor, getting the chance to work on “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” was an entirely new experience.
“I’ve never done a film like this before,” Taylor, a four-time Oscar nominee for “Unbroken,” “Birdman,” “The Revenant” and “First Man,” tells Gold Derby about the stop-motion animated feature in an exclusive video interview as part of our Meet the Experts: Sound panel. The medium, Taylor says, provided the sound team with many advantages, but also some challenges. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
“It’s all so precise in the sound that there’s nowhere to hide. You just don’t add extra things to cover production flaws or help loop lines,” he adds. “All of the dialogue and all the music is recorded generally in many different places over the past three years or so. And stringing that together to make it sound like one is definitely a challenge.

For Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico, co-founders of ShadowMachine, a boutique animation studio and production house, work on “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” began a decade ago as some of the first concept art was being created.
“We were first introduced to Guillermo del Toro through Lisa Henson back in 2012,” says Bulkley. “At that point, obviously, we were years away from actually making it, but it allowed for us to start building relationships with [animation house] Mackinnon & Saunders in the U.K. and [co-helmer] Mark Gustafson. By the time we actually were greenlit through Netflix, we had a good idea of what Guillermo wanted to do, which is innovate stop motion by way of a grounded world. Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro promises that his stop-motion spin on the classic tale of Pinocchio will be “particularly beautiful” in a new look at the making of the film.
In a nearly two-minute behind-the-scenes video released as part of Netflix’s Tudum event on Saturday, the Pinocchio helmer celebrates the art of stop-motion while promising that his incarnation is a tribute to a fable close to his heart.
“To me, there’s a valuable difference between stop-motion as an art form and digital,” the award-winning filmmaker behind films like The Shape of Water and the animated series Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia. “Stop-motion in the early days where you had the flicker of fur and fabric, even the atmospheric dust on the sets — and the imperfection of it was totally gorgeous to look at because it told you how the thing was done.

"Pinocchio" is a beloved story about a little wooden boy who longs to become human, and we're about to be blessed with a truly imaginative take on the tale. Guillermo del Toro, the writer and director of some of the greatest cinematic fairy tales of our time, including "Pan's Labyrinth" and "The Shape of Water," is creating a stop-motion animated film about the doll that longed for a flesh and blood body. It looks absolutely incredible, featuring some of the most detailed stop-motion models I've ever seen. Del Toro's "Pinocchio" will take the story back to its roots, riffing on the 1883 novel by Carlo Collodi and subverting it to tell a more del Toro-themed tale about the dangers of fascism.

Once upon a time, there were two “Pinocchio” movies getting made, and the Guillermo del Toro version looked positively stunning.
On Tuesday, Netflix debuted a new teaser trailer for the Oscar winner’s upcoming stop-motion take on Carlo Collodi’s Italian folktale, co-directed with Mark Gustafson and co-written with Patrick McHale. Disney will bring a live-action remake of its well-loved 1940 classic to Disney+ on September 8, with star Tom Hanks as Geppetto and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth voicing Pinocchio.
But where that production seems to be clinging to the old (a teaser from last month revealed what very well could be another shot-for-shot remake à la the 2018 “Lion King“), “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” explicitly promises “a story you think you know, but you don’t.”

Guillermo del Toro introduced an exquisite scene and new teaser trailer from his anticipated stop-motion Pinocchio on Wednesday at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
As one would expect from the visionary director, the craftsmanship — from the stylized character and production design to the lighting and sound — makes for a rich rendering of the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s reimagining of classic 1883 novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, which follows a wooden marionette created by grieving woodcarver Geppetto.
In the moody scene, Geppetto (voiced by David Bradley) wakes in his woodcarving space next to a bottle and a broken picture frame, when he hears noise in his attic. “Who goes there?” he asks as he climbs the creaky ladder to the attic, revealing Pinocchio (Gregory Mann). “You asked for me to live. I’m your son,” the awkward wooden boy replies.

I’m your son,” the awkward wooden boy replies.
