The Thin Man plays at The Hi-Pointe Theater ( 1005 McCausland Ave., St. Louis, Mo 63117) Saturday, June 13th at 10:30am as part of their Classic Film Series
W.S. Van Dyke’s 1934 film The Thin Man stars Myrna Loy and William Powell as Nora and Nick Charles, upper class sleuths who unwittingly become caught up in the case of a missing friend and former client. Nick is a former detective who has been in retirement for the last four years, living the high life with Nora when Dorothy Wynant (Maureen O’Sullivan) implores with them to help find her father, who has been missing for three months. Throughout the investigation, Nick and Nora rarely are without a drink in their hands, are forever trading witticisms and getting themselves into comical situations; they even get their terrier Asta in on their investigation.

“There was a man in New York one time,” reminisces Kingsley Amis in his book Everyday Drinking, “who bet he could drink fifteen double Martinis in an hour. He got there all right and collected his money but within another minute fell dead off his bar stool.” It’s a pity Amis never met Nick Charles (William Powell) or his wife, Nora (Myrna Loy), who down a half-dozen martinis apiece within The Thin Man’s opening minutes; they’d have doubtless won the bet and swiftly ordered more. Nick and Nora remain Dashiell Hammett's most enduring pair of private detectives, and The Thin Man, adapted by W.S. Van Dyke from the mystery novel of the same name, is an exemplary film noir. Hammett’s story of a vanishing family patriarch and...

Lawrence Michael Levine reaches back to a seemingly dead genre, the screwball murder mystery, for his primary influences on Wild Canaries. Using The Thin Man series as one of his earliest reference points, Levine models Noah after William Powell's Nick Charles, developing a character who is comically reserved and rational, yet despite his carefulness is also quite vulnerable. Noah is so tentative in his actions -- well, except for whenever he is inebriated -- that this character takes a backseat in the murder mystery to Barri. The plot of Wild Canaries could almost be explained as a modern day adaptation of Woody Allen's Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993) -- which is debatably the last legitimate entry into the screwball murder mystery cannon -- with Levine playing the Woody Allen to Takal's Diane Keaton.

Newly released on collectable Blu-ray, The Long Goodbye (1973, directed by Robert Altman) is the kind of film you feel ashamed for not watching more often. Starring Elliot Gould as Raymond Chandler’s pulp private dick Phillip Marlowe, this is a quirky, very seventies re-imagining of the Humphrey Bogart man-in-a-trenchcoat myth. The film is contemporary set, yet Gould’s Marlowe is a man out of place and time. Everything from his car to apartment to clothes is indicative of the P.I’s golden age; a world of cocktails, dames and pinstripe suits, not cat food, hippies and polyester.
Hollywood’s effortless private detective was created in the post-Prohibition era of the 1930s-40s, and into the 50’s. The noir stories of The Thin Man (1934), The Maltese Falcon (1941), The Big Sleep (1946), Kiss Me Deadly (1955) and beyond were characterised by a hero – generally not an anti-hero despite the dark tone – who dressed and acted a certain way.

Few genres of film inspire more personal responses than the romantic comedy. Given how much of our lives is spent on love and romance (falling into it, falling out of it, chasing it, giving up on it), it's no surprise that the rom-com has remained one of the most popular formulas since the dawn of cinema, and while the genre has undisputed classics, you can end up cherishing certain films purely because of their connection to your own life. They can help pull you out of a post break-up tailspin, they can comfort you through unrequited love, and, if a film hits you at the height of your passion for someone, they can end up associated forever, even blinding you to the movie's flaws -- seeing "Elizabethtown" in the midst of first love left this writer swooning after exiting the theater (thankfully, a subsequent rewatch put me straight as to how terrible it is.

When casting for a remake of a super popular classic film it's important to start at the top of the shelf and work your way down. That's precisely how the remake of The Thin Man is being handled at the moment, as director Rob Marshall and company prepare to sign an equally well known female lead to star with Johnny Depp. The list in this case, the A-list to play Nora Charles to Depp's Nick Charles has been narrowed down to some very notable names, Deadline reported.

Eva Green, Amy Adams, Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan, Kristen Wiig, Emily Blunt and Isla Fisher along with the still in the mix Rachel Weisz are all up for the lead role of Nora Charles in Rob Marshall's remake of the classic detective comedy "The Thin Man" reports Deadline.
The various actresses will meet with Marshall next week about the part which will be opposite Johnny Depp as the male lead in the project which is being produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, Infinitum Nihil Company and Langley Park Pictures.
The original 1934 film starred William Powell and Myrna Loy, and was based on Dashiell Hammett's novel. The story follows an alcoholic former P.I. named Nick Charles and his wealthy heiress wife Nora who investigate a murder that involves an eccentric inventor and his bizarre family.

Deadline has the scoop on the long list of actresses being considered to star as Nora Charles, wife and co-detective to Johnny Depp's Nick Charles in a remake of 1939's The Thin Man. And they are, objectively ordered from least-letters-in-name to most-letters-in-name: Amy Adams, Eva Green, Emma Stone, Emily Blunt, Isla Fisher, Rachel Weisz, Kristen Wiig, and Carey Mulligan. And look, if none of these leading ladies emerges from the pack, they can always do the I'm Not There thing and have them all play the same role across various points in time.

Thought I am not very famialir with The Thin Man series, an adaptation of te comedy mystery starring Johnny Depp seems almost destined. But for a long time the Rob Marshall-directed movie has gone without an actress that Depp would star opposite of. And now Deadline has come across an ecliptic shortlist of actresses that could star in the movie.
According to the site Carey Mulligan, Emma Stone, Kristen Wiig, Emily Blunt, Rachel Weisz, Eva Green, Amy Adams, and Isla Fisher are all names that are being considered for the role of Nora, the wife of the socialite detective Nick Charles (to be played by Depp). That’s quite a collection of names that are being considered for the role of Nora, some of which have amazing comedic abilities and the other dramatic. Wiig, Stone, and Blunt have amazing acting abilties, but I have yet to see Green and Mulligan spread their comedic wings.

Even though I wish they would leave it alone, or at the very least get a different director than Rob Marshall, it would appear the remake of the 1934 comedy/mystery classic The Thin Man is continuing to move forward with Johnny Depp in the lead role as Nick Charles, a former detective who, along with his rich, playful wife Nora, end up solving a murder case mostly for the fun of it. The original was the first in a series of films featuring William Powell and Myrna Loy in the lead roles based on the 1932 novel by Dashiell Hammett and if you haven't seen it you simply must. If the only reason you liked The Artist was for the dog then be sure and watch The Thin Man, which has a story even more enduring than its lovable canine co-star. Looking in earnest for the perfect Nora Charles, the lauded Chicago director will begin meeting next week with a long list of leading ladies, including: Eva Green, Amy Adams, Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan, Kristen Wiig, Emily Blunt and Isla Fisher. Weisz is still in the mix, but now she's got some serious competition. While each of the women above is beautiful and talented, the range in age and type here is slightly bewildering. So, who's gonna be the lucky lady to star opposite Johnny Depp in this brewing remake/reboot of "The Thin Man"? Well, no surprise that the biggest actor on the planet has his pick of leading ladies.
Deadline reports that (deep breath) Eva Green, Amy Adams, Emma Stone, Carey Mulligan, Rachel Weisz, Kristen Wiig, Emily Blunt and Isla Fisher are among those meeting with director Rob Marshall next week to try to land the gig. Of all the contenders, Green may have the slight edge, having worked alongside him recently in "Dark Shadows" (and if you believe the tabloids, was responsible for wooing him from Vanessa Paradis). But she might not have the comic timing or experience that folks like Stone, Wiig, Blunt, Fisher and even Weisz can bring. Stone is all fresh-faced enthusiasm and poised to become huge after "The Amazing Spider-Man" this summer, while Mulligan seems the odd duck in this group.

The new version of The Thin Man, which Johnny Depp set in motion at Warner Bros. last year, is still moving forward. The star has wanted to make a new film based on Dashiell Hammett's classic novel (which already spawned a six-film series and a television show) and last year roped in his Pirates 4 director Rob Marhsall to direct. Now Billy Ray (Shattered Glass, Breach) has been hired to draft a new script. THR [1] says that Warner Bros. considers the film a priority, as it naturally would with any Johnny Depp project. Ray is the latest writer after Jerry Stahl and David Koepp. The latter moved on when he and Marshall had creative differences. When Koepp was hired to write [2] we heard that The original intention is to take elements of the first two films and work them into one film, putting it into a period setting and...

"The Lone Ranger" may be on the budget back burner, but Johnny Depp is keeping busy designing yet another slurry, quirky role for himself. As you're undoubtedly aware, Depp has set up a remake of "The Thin Man" at Warner Bros. Rob Marshall will helm it, and now Deadline reports he's put David Koepp to work writing the script. And oh, what a script that will be. As if fans of "The Thin Man" weren't furious enough at Depp daring to take on the classic role of Nick Charles, they're going to go into a blind berserker rage at the version Depp aims to tell. While there's some soothing lipservice that Depp and Koepp plan to turn to the original Dashiell Hammett novel, it's only talk, because the starting point is clearly the 1934 film. Koepp plans to write one film that combines The Thin Man and After the Thin Man...

I think any lingering interest I had in Johnny Depp's remake of The Thin Man, to be directed [1] by Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall, just evaporated. It's the one-two punch of hiring David Koepp to write the script, and the fact that part of the plan is to create a version of The Thin Man that has "a Sherlock Holmes-like stylized treatment." (With Holmes there referring to the Guy Ritchie movie that has become a near-ubiquitous touchstone when talking about a period film with comic action leanings.) Deadline [2] reports on the hire and the stylistic choice, noting that some time ago Jerry Stahl would write [3], but that deal didn't go through. So David Koepp will go back to the original novel by Dashiell Hammett -- a really fun, breezy read that is just about perfect as a template for a film. (Which explains...

David Koepp has signed on to write the script for the upcoming Rob Marshall remake of The Thin Man , Deadline reports. Set for Johnny Depp to headline, the project is based on the popular 1934 film that starred William Powell and Myrna Loy, in turn based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett. In this version, Depp will play Nick Charles, a private detective married to a wealthy socialite, Nora. The pair, along with their dog, Asta, work together to solve cases. The original film spawned five sequels and a television series. Though the titular "thin man" of the first film was a reference to a corpse that begins the story, the title, much like the "Pink Panther" series, became more of a reference to Nick himself, beginning with the first sequel, The Thin Man...

Nick Charles, CNN's first sports anchor, lost his battle with bladder cancer on Saturday (June 25). He was 64.
Charles, the son of a taxi driver, grew up in Chicago. He himself got behind the wheel of a cab when putting himself through college. When he got his first job as a sports anchor he was told that his Greek name -- Nick Nickleas -- was too ethnic. So he changed it to Charles.
Along with Fred Hickman, Charles co-anchored CNN's "Sports Tonight" for 20 years. In 2009, he was diagnosed with cancer. In March, Charles said he hoped to make it through one more Easter, see his daughter play the piano, see his dream home completed and reach his 65th birthday on June 30. According to CNN, he made three out of four.
On Saturday, boxer Mike Tyson remember Charles on Twitter: "Mourning the loss of a true warrior. My friend & brother, Nick Charles.

Renowned CNN sports anchor and boxing announcer Nick Charles has lost the most important fight of all: his battle against bladder cancer. The beloved sportscaster, best known for his commentary on Sports Tonight, passed away Saturday after battling the disease since 2009, according to CNN. Charles's wife, Cory, told the network his death was a peaceful one, however, saying he died gazing at the land he cherished in Santa Fe, N.M. Although Charles' career catapulted while he co-anchored Sports Tonight with Fred Hickman (Charles even had his own sports trading card), he actually started working for the network on the day of its inception, June 1, 1980. Charles, an avowed...

Welcome to the 99% Horror Issue! Why? Because that’s just how news went down last week. Turn on your night light and enjoy….
* Forget the Hulk; Thor smash! The Norse god stepped all over it’s competition, leaving Bridesmaids, well, always a bridesmaid and Fast Five in the dust. Newcomer Priest and kiddie fave Rio round out the top five (thanks to Box Office Mojo for the stats.)
* Remember those embarrassingly stereotypic Transformers from Revenge of the Fallen? Well, they won’t be back. Unless they’re back. No, wait…. Well, if they do come back, I hope it’s because the movie needs a few Redshirts. You’d think movie makers would have learned by now; Just Say No to anything that smacks of Jar-Jar Binks.
* I really, really need this new Muppets poster.

Trying to make sense of false leads, suspicious alibis and mistaken identities, Nick and Nora are thrown into a world of gangsters, hoodlums and speakeasies, where no-one can be trusted.

Ralph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz, The Constant Gardener Rachel Weisz, Oscar winner for The Constant Gardener, may join Rob Marshall and Johnny Depp in the Warner Bros. remake of The Thin Man. Depp is set to play dipsomaniac detective Nick Charles; according to reports, Weisz is being considered for the role of Nick's equally dipsomaniac partner in crime-solving, Nora Charles. William Powell and Myrna Loy became first-rank stars after playing Nick and Nora in W. S. Van Dyke's 1934 film adaptation — which is quite different from Dashiell Hammett's considerably darker book. That was back in the day when MGM was a major Hollywood powerhouse. The Thin Man earned Oscar nominations in the Best Picture, Best Actor (Powell), Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay (Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett) categories. Loy was bypassed, which outraged many at the time. Weisz's latest vehicles haven't performed well at the North American box office — e.g.

It seems like Rachel Weisz is all over the place these days, as we’ve heard that she might play one of the witches in Oz: The Great and Powerful, and has been rumored for the female lead in The Bourne Legacy. Now, it’s said that she could show up in another reboot, the Rob Marshall-directed, Johnny Depp-starring The Thin Man.
CinemaBlend says that the British actress is on the Warner Bros. wishlist for the role of Nora Charles, husband to Depp‘s Nick Charles. The character was played by Myrna Loy in the classic 1931 film, and is Nick’s partner in crime-solving. In the original movie, they take on a case of Nick’s friend, Clyde Wynant, who is suspected of murder following his disappearance after his girlfriend’s death.

In case you didn’t know, Johnny Depp and his “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” director Rob Marshall have been talking up a remake of “The Thin Man” since October of 2010. It’s only recently that the project has become sorta “official”, or as official as you can get nowadays. The big question is, with Depp set as boozing socialite P.I. Nick Charles, who will play his equally boozing wife Nora? Cinemablend thinks it might be Rachel Weisz. The site reports that Warner Bros. is “considering” Weisz for the role, though I haven’t any idea what that means exactly. If true, Weisz is apparently going to be very busy in the coming years. She’s already been linked to an evil witch in Sam Raimi’s “Oz The Great and Powerful”, as Jeremy Renner’s co-star in Tony Gilroy’s “The Bourne Legacy”, and now, in “The Thin Man”. Plus,...

After working together on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, director Rob Marshall and Johnny Depp will reunite for a remake of the 1934 mystery/comedy The Thin Man. Depp discussed Marshall as the director when the project was first announced back in October, but the Marshall confirmed his involvement in an official statement from Warner Bros.
[On Stranger Tides Producer] John [DeLuca] and I are overjoyed at the idea of working with Johnny again, especially on such a classy and classic project. We are also thrilled to be partnering this time with such wonderful producers as Christi Dembroski and Kevin McCormick, and we are looking forward to working with Warner Bros. to create a reinvention of a beloved story.
In The Thin Man, Depp will play former detective Nick Charles (originally portrayed by William Powell) who, along with his wife Nora (originally played by Myrna Loy) and their dog Asta, solves crimes and engages in witty banter.

Rumor has it, Rachel Weisz may join Johnny Depp in "The Thin Man". Cinema Blend has lifted the issue, saying that Warner Bros. Pictures is considering the actress to star as Nora, the wife of Depp's Nick Charles.
Although she is wanted to take the female lead role, Weisz has not yet got involved in a negotiation with WB. As for the reason, Cinema Blend reports that the studio is trying to fit the film in Depp's tight schedule, as he will appear in some other movies, including "The Lone Ranger" and "Dark Shadows".
Earlier today, Weisz is also rumored in deep talks with Universal Pictures to take the female lead role in "The Bourne Legacy". In addition to the "Bourne" rumor, the star of "The Mummy" has been said to play Evanora in "Oz, the Great and Powerful".
Unfortunately, there are scheduling conflicts between both films. Production of the...

Rob Marshall and Johnny Depp are working on a remake of The Thin Man in which Depp would take the role of Nick Charles, originally played by William Powell in the 1934 version. And now, we know who may end up playing his wife, Nora. Warner Bros. is considering Rachel Weisz. The movie is a comedic detective story about a flirty, married couple who solve crimes. The 1934 version was nominated for an Academy Award, but if you picture this premise in a 2011 wrapper, you.ll probably end up with something like The Tourist, Killers, Knight and Day, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, or a dozen other movies with similar premises. The Thin Man was a good film, but that idea has been done so many different ways since, to differentiate the redo from the pack they.ll need special casting. Weisz and Depp together on screen seems like a natural fit. Word from...

The forth Pirates of the Caribbean saga must have proved to be a rewarding creative experience for star Johnny Depp and newcomer to the series, Nine director Rob Marshall. Both are attached to the remake of 1934 comedy-mystery, The Thin Man.
The Wrap is reporting that the actor will play the part of Nick Charles, a former detective who embarks a murder mystery case for fun, alongside his wife. The female lead is yet to be cast (wonder how far down the list Angelia Jolie sits?), but this remake will be co-produced by Depp, with script-writing duties going to Jerry Stahl – the famous hedonist 80’s TV scribe who has since cleaned up his act and has gone on to work on CSI and contributed to the script for Bad Boys 2.

The film sees mankind develop gigantic robot-like mechanical suits to fend off alien creatures which have emerged from a dimensional portal in the ocean.
Hunnam, who you may recall as Nathan in UK's Queer as Folk, went on to appear in Children of Men before coming to America's attention in the outlaw biker series Sons of Anarchy (as pictured above).

Though this one was all but inevitable, there is now full confirmation that Rob Marshall is on board to direct the remake of The Thin Man, which will star his current Pirates cohort Johnny Depp.Permanent Midnight’s Jerry Stahl has penned the script for this new version of the 1934 original, maintaining a lot of the storyline about a former detective (William Powell in the ‘30s film) and his socialite wife (Myrna Loy) who somehow still manage to get tangled up in mysteries. It’s not clear quite how much will change or what will be updated in this new adaptation of Dashiel Hammett’s fifth and final novel, but Depp will take over the Powell role of Nick Charles.According to Variety, Marshall – who was badgered by Depp constantly on the set of On Stranger Tides to take the job – wants to honour the original film’s intent as part of the remake.
