Ryan Seacrest has only been living in New York City a few weeks now, having filled Kelly Ripa’s co-host spot on Live with Kelly! in May. So excuse him if he’s a little new to the talented buskers who perform on the Big Apple’s subway system.

There’s more than one love story at play in Sophie Brooks’ “The Boy Downstairs,” which follows a young New Yorker who returns to the city after two years away, only to discover that her wonderful new home just so happens to be located right above an apartment inhabited by her broken-hearted ex. Behind the camera, the first-time feature filmmaker fell head over (friendship, professional, creative) heels with her star, Zosia Mamet. For Mamet, who is now carving out the next stage of her career after the end of her name-making role in HBO’s “Girls,” the feeling was mutual.
Brooks used her own life as inspiration for the film – after being felled by a nasty bout of appendicitis, she dreamed up a story where a character is ill and can only be cared for by an ex – which she eventually expanded out into what would become “The Boy Downstairs.

Back in 2009, a little-known dystopian movie called "District 9" hit theaters. With its seamless mixture of apartheid metaphors and sci-fi sizzle, director Neill Blomkamp's debut film turned into a surprise box office juggernaut. The movie would go on to receive four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
Blomkamp's long-awaited second feature, "Elysium," hits theaters this weekend. The movie stars Matt Damon as a desperate inhabitant on a financially defunct earth. As for the planet's richest and most powerful inhabitants, they live on Elysium, an idyllic community housed on an orbiting space station 19 minutes outside of earth's atmosphere. It's a society free of crime, pollution, and disease, and those stuck on earth are desperate to get in.
There's intense pressure on Blomkamp to follow up "District 9" with a movie just as innovative, surprising, and fun as his first film. So has he done it? Or has he fallen into the sci-fi sophomore slump?...

NBC’s Smash and CBS’ The Amazing Race were honored tonight at the 24th GLAAD Media Awards in New York City. Smash was named best drama series and Amazing Race took the nod for best reality series. How To Survive A Plague, a film chronicling the rise of activism in the early years of AIDS, was named best documentary. Dressed as a Boy Scout, Madonna presented the previously announced Vito Russo Award to CNN’s Anderson Cooper. Russo, who died in 1990, was a film historian who voiced concerns about how gays and lesbians are portrayed in the media. Movie director Brett Ratner received GLAAD’s inaugural Ally Award. The award for Ratner represented a turnaround from a little over a year ago when he dropped out as producer of last year’s Academy Awards after joking at an early press conference that “rehearsing is for fags”. Ratner since worked with...

Coming out exactly eleven years from the release of The Little Friend, The Goldfinch: A Novel has been set for an October 22, 2013 release. Here's its Amazon description: "A young boy in New York City, Theo Decker, miraculously survives an explosion that takes the life of his mother. Alone and determined to avoid being taken in by the city as an orphan, Theo scrambles between nights in friends' apartments and on the city streets. He becomes entranced by the one thing that reminds him of his mother: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that soon draws Theo into the art underworld." Explosions!? Orphans!? Underworld!? Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

“Oh for crying out loud you gangly cretin, stop giving me things to find!” This is among the sentences you would have heard coming from my apartment during the last few days. The victim of my tirades: The Riddler. The source of my anguish: Arkham City.
As I sat there bleary eyed and hopped up on Dr Pepper at one in the morning, screaming at a character that clearly could not hear me, or at least had no interest in my torment, I had an epiphany. Perched just feet from my TV screen, close to full on spaz out, I reached the conclusion that some modern games are just too brilliant to merely play until campaign completion – gaming has become too demanding. You see, in the latter part of 2011, I was in the enviable position of having some extra DeNiros in my sky-rocket. Being a man-child in my late-20’s,...

Look out Hollywood, the video game industry is hot on your heels, poaching your talent and raking in the money. And one game has led the way…
The fastest-selling cultural product in history was created by people you've probably never heard of. While this year's Oscars honoured films in which the movie business sweetly congratulates itself on its own birth – The Artist, Hugo – the most dollar-hoovering entertainment release ever is not a film, still less an album; it's a video game. Coming out last autumn, Modern Warfare 3 – a blockbuster military shooter made by a Californian game studio called Infinity Ward – took just 16 days to gross $1bn, beating by one day the previous record set by a film about blue people in space. And it wasn't a freak accident. Global annual sales of video games now dwarf cinema box-office and recorded music: in 2010, games grossed $56bn, film tickets $32bn and music $23bn.

Coming out of Berlinale, Deadline has heard that Paul Giamatti, Paul Rudd, and Sally Hawkins are all starring in Lucky Dog, the first feature from director Phil Morrison since 2005′s Junebug. The comedy, written by Melissa James Gibson, revolves around “a pair of French-Canadian conmen pals who, despite being on the outs with each other, hatch a get-rich-quick scheme to sell Christmas trees in NY.” Now, I’d normally thrown in a guess as to who will play the two con men, but that’s no great mystery to be hatched; Hawkins, if a history with these kinds of movies serves me correctly, will be playing one of their wives. Don’t take my word for it, however.
Furthermore, does anyone else get an “’80s movie with John Candy that Comedy Central would play on a Sunday afternoon” feeling here? Well, I do, and I’d count it as a plus.

Dylan McDermott has no problem being naked on American Horror Story, though he admits to covering up between takes (unlike a certain vampire on HBO). "When I'm in the role, in the moment, I'm comfortable. After they yell 'cut,' I don't need to put my balls in someone's face." He also says he's being hit on by a lot more gay men than he's used to, "Honestly, I'm cool with everyone, and people pick up on that. I'd say, 'I'm not gay, but it's all good'. It's kind of like going to Paris when you don't know the language: some Americans get into trouble over there, but I'm just like, 'Sorry, I don't speak French.'"

In the midst of music's most decadent eras during the '70s and '80s, Nile Rodgers was at the forefront of pop music. With his dynamic ear for producing top-ten records and with his finger on the pulse of American culture, Rodgers has not only had multiplatinum success, but he has also redefined pop music as we know it today.
Crafting hits for the likes of Diana Ross ("I'm Coming Out"), Madonna ("Like A Virgin"), Chic ("Good Times"), David Bowie ("China Girl"), Mick Jagger ("She's The Boss") and Grace Jones ("Inside Story"), among countless others, Rodgers had plenty of experience to draw upon for his new autobiography, "Le Freak: An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco, and Destiny." Four and a half years in the making, the personal memoir details the former Honeydrippers and Chic member's rise to stardom and the many hurdles that he faced. It wasn't until...

Many of you will know actor John Leguizamo as an intense, wiry Hollywood character actor who has forged a successful career playing some memorable roles in some equally impressive features (Super Mario Brothers and The Happening, notwithstanding).
What is probably less well-known about the Colombian-born actor is his extensive theatre work. He’s been behind a number of successful, award-winning one-man shows since the early nineties, where he has delved into the subject of his Latino heritage, family issues and general psyche with such colourful titles as Mambo Mouth, Spic-o-Rama, and Sexaholix… A Love Story (he also penned a biography entitled Pimps, Hos, Playa Hatas, and All the Rest of My Hollywood Friends: My Life).
It’s with the latest of these works, Ghetto Klown (a distillation of the other earlier productions, and brimming with more of an autobiographical overtone) which sees him make his debut on the UK stage...

Zachary Quinto is most famous for his sci-fi roles -- he portrayed super-villain serial killer Sylar on NBC's "Heroes," then went on to recreate Spock for a new generation of "Star Trek" fans. But while some may wish the current financial crisis were fantasy fiction, Quinto's new movie "Margin Call" is Sylar-scary and based on something all too real.
Quinto made headlines this week for more than his well-timed financial thriller; as a casual aside during an interview, Quinto came out to a New York magazine reporter, causing a splash that Quinto himself never saw coming.
We spoke to Quinto for his take on Occupy Wall Street (and Boston, London, Phoenix, Seattle, etc.), what's next in the world of "Trek," and how revealing his sexual orientation was a gesture to the community.
