Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
Ten weeks deep and “Palm Royale” showrunner Abe Sylvia is still processing the success of his shimmering spring TV hit.
“I certainly live in an echo chamber on social media, so I’m seeing lots of ways in which it infiltrated culture,” the executive producer told IndieWire. “But I felt like we really crossed over when I saw that Ramona Singer from ‘Real Housewives’ was dressed for a ‘Palm Royale’-themed cocktail party. That’s when I went, ‘Uh-oh, something has changed here. Something has shifted.'”

When it comes to The Facts of Life, former star Mindy Cohn knows a thing or two, but when she stopped by the TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine offices to chat about her new Apple TV+ show Palm Royale, she couldn’t help but reflect on her relationship with the long-running publication. “I remember the cover shoot and I remember being on the cover. It was so major,” Cohn recalls of the first time she and her Facts of Life costars graced the cover of TV Guide Magazine. “I mean, this was more important than an Emmy nom! This was like, ‘We made the cover of TV Guide. I think we’re doing okay kids!'” Cohn remembers. Enlightened was more than just the title of the HBO TV series Laura Dern starred in from 2011-2013. It’s also the state of being the actress and her future producing partner, Jayme Lemons, found themselves in after Dern served as an executive producer and Lemons a first-time producer on the comedy-drama.
“Once we had that experience on Enlightened, we both felt like we have all of these other passions, maybe it’s time we focus more on getting these projects done,” Dern tells The Hollywood Reporter in the conversation below.

“Why do you want to be where you’re not wanted?”
Posed by Linda Shaw (Laura Dern) — a proud hippie of the ’60s recently accused of “dressing like an indigent Mennonite railway priestess” — this question rests at the center of “Palm Royale,” alongside its recipient, Maxine Simmons (Kristen Wiig). The 40-something new kid in town insists to everyone she meets they use her married name, D’ellacourt, in the hopes its notoriety around Palm Beach will help hasten her acceptance there. Maxine wants nothing more than to be a member of high society, rubbing elbows with the movers and shakers at South Florida’s glam parties and opulent benefits, and she knows looking the part is just as important as living it. To her benefit: She is, in fact, a D’ellacourt. She is not, however, as wealthy as the minted moniker suggests, which proves a recurring impediment in her...

There are so many fabulous women wearing so many fabulous ‘60s outfits in Apple TV+’s Palm Royale, it’s like a Ryan Murphy fever dream. A cast that includes Kristen Wiig, Allison Janney, Laura Dern and Carol Burnett is undeniably tantalizing, but Palm Royale — debuting this Wednesday on the streamer; I’ve seen the first three episodes — never lives up to its stellar cast. Campy and overbaked, it manages to fall between the cracks of the dramedy genre: not funny enough to be a comedy and not compelling enough to be a drama. But the clothes do look great,...

Four meddling teenagers and a dog. From that simplest of premises, Joe Ruby and Ken Spears created an idea that has carried television series, live-action big-budget films, numerous animated movies, and countless parodies. So successful was Scooby-Doo that Hannah-Barbera launched several spin-offs, including Jabberjaw (teens and a talking whale) and Speed-Buggy (teens and a talking dune buggy). But there was something special about the alchemy Ruby and Spears derived for Scooby-Doo that made it stand the test of time. With its monster plots, Scooby-Doo became the ultimate introduction to horror for even the most timid kid.

Considered one of the most influential actors of the 20th century, even hearing the name "Al Pacino" triggers the response of "Oh, this is gonna be good." One of the few performers to have achieved the Triple Crown of Acting, Pacino's next project brings him into a territory he doesn't often explore: the world of indie dramas.
Pacino is set to star in the upcoming "Billy Knight," the feature directorial debut of writer/director Alec Griffen Roth. Roth is the son of legendary screenwriter and producer Eric Roth, so it'll be fascinating to see whether or not the apple falls far from the tree on this one.
Here's what we know about "Billy Knight" so far.

Can that nostalgic feeling be enough to garner an Emmy nomination? If the 2022 list of nominees is any guide, the answer is yes.
In the live variety special category, the proof is in the pudding. Per usual, the Grammys, the Tonys and the Oscars — slap and all — are nominated. However, the final two slots are filled by ABC’s “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: The Facts of Life and Diff ’rent Strokes” and NBC’s “Pepsi Super Bowl Lvi Halftime Show.”
The Norman Lear and Jimmy Kimmel live special has been nominated each time it has aired previously — first for the recreation of “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” in 2019 and in 2020, with “Good Times” in the mix. With “The Facts of Life” and “Diff ’rent Strokes” this year, not only were old stories retold, more A-list stars — and talent from the original shows— joined in.

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details about Tuesday’s Live in Front of a Studio Audience, which aired live on the East Coast on ABC.
After four decades, cameras rolled once again on the classic ’70s/’80s comedies, Diff’rent Strokes and The Facts of Life, as part of ABC’s Live in Front of a Studio Audience tonight.
Airing live on the East Coast, the telecast unfolded smoothly, with no major line flubs and only a few uneven moments, which passed quickly. Soon-to-be-100-year-old TV legend Norman Lear, appearing with Jimmy Kimmel, who produced the third outing in the Live series, dropped an f-bomb that had to be bleeped. The curse word toward the top of the show seemed to be a staged, though amusing, element.

This Tuesday at 8/7c, ABC will revisit two more classic sitcoms, Diff’rent Strokes and its offshoot The Facts of Life, by way of its Live in Front of a Studio Audience franchise.
But whereas these live specials in the past stayed age-accurate in the casting of characters from All in the Family, The Jeffersons and Good Times, this time around Jimmy Kimmel, sitcom titan Norman Lear, Brent Miller and the other exec producers opted to have some fun refilling iconic roles with, let’s say, Actors of a Diff’rent Age.

You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have: “The Facts of Life.” But there’s no bad, only good — no, make that great — casting here for next week’s “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” remake of the classic 1980s sitcom.
Joining the previously announced Ann Dowd (as Edna Garrett) will be Jennifer Aniston as Blair, Gabrielle Union as Tootie, Allison Tolman as Natalie and Kathryn Hahn as Jo.
For the third installment of “Live in Front of a Studio Audience,” executive producers Norman Lear and Jimmy Kimmel are pairing the iconic late 1970s/early 1980s comedy “Diff’rent Strokes” with its spinoff, “The Facts of Life.” Both series came from Lear’s production companies during that era, Tandem Productions (originally founded by Lear and Bud Yorkin in 1958) and T.A.T. Communications, which were later folded into Embassy Communications.
