When Adrian Lyne directed his second feature, “Flashdance,” he could scarcely have dreamed that decades later, the film, starring Jennifer Beals in the iconic role of Alex Owens (a young welder who dreams of being a professional dancer), would have, well, such legs.
In celebration of its 40th anniversary (technically on April 15), Paramount Home Entertainment has released a lovingly crafted 4K Ultra HD edition, in addition to launching a pair of special theatrical engagements later in the month. For any and all maniacs on the floor, it’s the kind of treatment the plucky feature has long deserved. For Lyne, it’s a bit odd but quite nice.
“Well, it’s strange,” Lyne said with a laugh during a recent interview with IndieWire. “I guess it’s flattering. I mean, it is flattering because the expectations for the film were zero. I couldn’t get anybody [from the studio] on the phone for...

Indisputable fact: Breakdancing is awesome. There's nothing more satisfying than watching a guy in baggy clothes fly around on the floor as if he's riding an invisible pommel horse. The acrobatics of 'breaking' will be explored in The Arena, a new series on the DS2DIO channel where eight of the world's best b-boys will put on their electrifying acts in a unique competition. The show premieres today and a new episode will air every Monday. In The Arena, the eight b-boys will compete in four rounds of dance. One of the goals of The Arena, as expounded by host Ivan 'Flipz' Velez in a recent featurette, will be to introduce breaking to the uninitiated, most of whom are familiar only with the gymnastic 'power' moves that involve flips and spins. "In The Arena we get to explain, and people get to see, what are the fundamentals of breaking," explains Flipz,...

Plus, "Boba Fetish," Ramin Setoodeh's day gets worse, Was "Freeway of Love" worth a cover, and you need to vote for Danny Miller!
Everyone and their brother is ganging up on Ramin Setoodeh and Newsweek. Kristen Chenoweth got the publicity we didn’t, which is fine. And now Ted Casablanca has taken what she said and extrapolated it with Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to drive the point home.
It seems Morocco is being more logical than Egypt, and is going to let Sir Elton John perform a concert there, despite some outcry from clerics that worry he will “encourage homosexuality.”
The cast of Three Musketeers is shaping up to be handsome, with negotiations for Percy Jackson’s Logan Lerman up for D’Artagnan, and Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans and Matthew MacFadyen up for the Porthos, Athos, and Aramis. They hope Orlando Bloom will play against type as the villainous Duke of Buckingham.

Abrahmz Tekya established Break-dance Project Uganda to teach Ugandan kids to connect to themselves and escape their predicaments through dance. His efforts set against the historical backdrop of Idi Amin and amidst the present-day evil of the Lord’s Resistance Army’s child soldiers wandering Uganda and the Congo causing untold devastation, Tekya — a b-boy devotee whose parents died when he was seven — has reached hundreds of youth.
Tekya’s teachings reference the pioneers of breaking, and Red Bull Media House brought the most significant name in the b-boy world, the Rock Steady Crew (with original member Crazy Legs), to Uganda for eight days. The locals’ understanding that music and dance can form peace seems simple-minded, but the power of their form in this context appears truly effective. In this world, bringing together boys and girls at a community center to dance also gives them access to computers, and enables...

The past few days at the 2010 Newport Beach Film Festival have whirred by me. From the world premieres of "140" (Frank Kelly's innovative effort in outsourcing filmmaking to a global community via Twitter), "Cancer to Capricorn: Path of the Modern Gypsy," Joshua Pomer's "The Westsiders" and hip-hop outreach flick "Bouncing Cats" starring Rock Steady Crew's Crazy Legs, the Nbff has once again cemented its position at the forefront of action sports and alternative indie programming.
There are the usual successes from the fest circuit here at play, but the true measures of this festival are its art and architecture and its action sports series, which manage to find audiences at both ends of the demographics spectrum and leave them wanting more. And there have been nightly soirees at Fashion Island's various restaurants and retail outlets, at which I’ve experienced the requisite amounts of Absolut, Stella Artois, tacos and Häagen-Dazs.

David Cook has been in the limelight for less than two years, but he's apparently already burned out by reporters asking him the same five questions. Late last week, Cook posted a new episode of his webshow "Pork Beans" in which the singer interviews a rubber chicken (named "Crazy Legs") by regurgitating particularly inane questions he's been asked since winning "American Idol" in 2008.
Among the vapid queries:
"Is Simon really that mean in person?"
"What's the last year of your life been like since I won 'American Idol?'"
"Who do you like better from Season 8, Adam or Kris?"
"What are your thoughts on Paula Abdul leaving 'American Idol?'" (Whoops. I totally asked Kris Allen that question last week. So kill me, I still think it was newsworthy!)
On one hand, I think the video — entitled "A Ficus Flows Between Us" — is a rather sharp satire on the state of music reporting.

Trick Daddy

Trick Daddy is a Miami legend. Any of the cats from the city who dominate radio today — Pitbull, Flo Rida, DJ Khaled — they have to give it up to the man first known as Trick Daddy Dollars. He's been a permanent fixture on the Mia scene, and it looks like he's not going anywhere anytime soon.
Trick recently started his own independent label Dunk Ryders, and his Finally Famous: Born a Thug Die a Thug LP should drop in late August or early September. There's also an autobiography and a film by the same name due soon. As we keep rocking with Miami Week, Trick gives us his list of homegrown artists who impacted their city the most. Also, be sure to check out our exclusive 'hood tour with Trick included below.

Crazy Legs Conti: Zen and the Art of Competitive Eating, which satiated audiences at the 2004 Tribeca Film Festival was released on DVD on July 24th. We spoke with Crazy Legs Conti for a taste of what's to come. Tribeca : The film, Crazy Legs Conti: Zen and the Art of Competitive Eating had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2004. Tell us about your experience of the festival Crazy Legs: The filmmakers and I were honored to be a part of the festival. To celebrate the release, I ate my way out of an eight-foot box of popcorn dubbed, 'The Popcorn Sarcophagus.' The sarcophagus was outside the theater where the doc was premiering. I had medical technicians, spiritual advisors, and color-coded wristbands to communicate through the plexiglas -- green for 'Ok', red for 'danger' and yellow for either 'warning' or perhaps 'more butter.' The media...
