Wall Street traders, always fickle, have a new favorite media company: Lionsgate.
Shares of the mini-major continued to climb this week after jumping 25 following stronger than expected earnings and a buoyant slate of new movies headed to theaters. The stock closed Thursday at 10.69, a big leap from the 5.46 low it recorded near the end of December. What’s odd about the jump is that it can be credited to that most antiquated of media revenue streams: theatrical moviegoing.
With Wall Street turning its back on streaming-centric metrics like content spend and subscriber growth, a studio that can still make money the old-fashioned way, from theater tickets to VOD and licensing fees, is suddenly more valuable. And there’s a lot at stake for Lionsgate: Its box office performance could determine whether it continues as a standalone business in an industry eager to consolidate.
Lionsgate Ytd: The stock climbed to 10.69 at close of market on Feb.

Gerard Butler’s long career in the movies started in a decidedly different place than where he (mostly) ended up. These days, he’s associated with characters like gruff detectives, action heroics, and — for a time — a go-to romantic comedy lead. These roles pull from a seemingly real place, given what Butler is like in real life.
But that’s not what Butler’s first major role pulled from at all. He played an iconically strange recluse. He brought a sense of dramatic stage gravitas to the big screen. And he sang!
Gerard Butler’s first major role was in ‘The Phantom of the Opera’
The 300 star started his acting career in 1997, but didn’t break out until many years later. According to IMDb, 2000 horror film Dracula 2000 was the moment when online fandom started to take notice of Butler’s unique allure. But Phantom of the Opera in 2004 was...

The Man Without Fear’s world will officially get a little more frightening! When Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk appeared on the Disney+ series Hawkeye, just one week after Charlie Cox’s blind lawyer Matt Murdock showed up in Spider-Man: No Way Home, rumors immediately began swirling about a showdown between the two. The Netflix Marvel shows may have a mixed legacy, but the clashes between Kingpin and Daredevil remain fan favorites. The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed that both characters will be in the upcoming Hawkeye spin-off Echo, meaning the two will finally meet in the MCU.
Outside of a rebooted Daredevil series, Echo is the most sensible place for the two to resume their hostilities. Played by Alaqua Cox, Maya Lopez aka Echo may have shown up on TV screens hunting Clint Barton in Hawkeye,...

Favorite director Bill Forsyth lends his knack for droll understatement to a screenplay by John Sayles, a crime tale that opts for keen character study and doesn’t stretch credibility. Burt Reynolds has a gem of a role as a career burglar doing his bit for the next generation, showing a ‘new guy’ the ins and outs of thievery; Casey Siemaszko is his thick-headed but resolutely faithful assistant on several outrageous heists. The criminal life almost doesn’t seem too terrible — except for the going-to-prison part. The disc commentary with Forsyth and Sayles is a great listen.

From the director of the beloved Local Hero: ‘Pure Simple Joy’ is an apt way to describe this deceptively meek, completely endearing Scottish film with a universal theme about adolescence and the reality of teen love. John Hughes’ teen pix do not hold a candle to the innocent charm found here. The gawky yet boundlessly optimistic Gregory falls head over heels for the teenaged wonder girl of his dreams… his only problem is that she’s light years ahead of him in terms of maturity. But the female social system takes on the problem in what must be the most gentle (make that Utopian) view of high school ever. Writer-director Bill Forsythe struck independent hit gold.

There is something of a knack to making a film that chooses to centre on dislikable characters, some succeed others face plant spectacularly and sadly The Hustle is more a case of the latter. Essentially a gender reversed remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, itself a remake of Pillow Talk, this is one con that is very much not on.
The basic principle of the film is to make a worthwhile feministic argument about certain types of men and their inherent egos and how these clued up con women can manipulate that base instinct to their advantage and initially there is an idea there. An early scene where Rebel Wilson’s Penny Rust hoodwinks a sex-obsessed man into coughing up his cash to “create” a more idealised female in his own mind really does present a truthfully twisted view of people who think with their pants over their conscience (if they even have one). Sadly,...

Kevin Smith revealed how he recently turned down an offer from Harvey Weinstein to make Dogma 2.
Kevin Smith and the stars of Comic Book Men are practically a New York Comic Con institution at this point. Having appeared during the first day of the con’s festivities every year since its second season, Smith, Walter Flanagan, Mike Zapcic, and the rest of the guys returned yet again for their Comic Book Men Season 7 Nycc panel.
This year, the conversation veered from the new season—which features among other things cameos by the likes of Mike Coulter, Rosario Dawson, and a strangely cuddly The Exorcist doll of Linda Blair—to the longtime Jersey history shared by the men. Yet no Kevin Smith con experience is complete without at least a solitary reference to projects the Clerks director has in the pipeline… and those he turned down. Indeed, during...

While we all wait for Marvel's The Defenders to premiere on Netflix this Friday, we have a new featurette for you to check out! The promo gives us a brief breakdown of each of the main characters and offers some insight into the story.
Not only does the feature include interviews Charlie Cox, Krysten Ritter, Mike Coulter and Finn Jones talking about their characters, but it also offers up some cool action-packed footage. I'm pretty excited about finally being about to watch this! It's been a long time in the making and I hope that everything these series have been building up towards pays off.
Marvel’s The Defenders follows Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Cox), Jessica Jones (Ritter), Luke Cage (Colter) and Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Jones), a quartet of singular heroes with one common goal – to save New York City. This is the story of four solitary figures, burdened with their own personal challenges,...

Ever since it was announced that the legendary Sigourney Weaver would be joining the Marvel universe, fans have been furiously theorizing over who her character in The Defenders could be. While we don’t know the true identity of the supervillainess just yet, this new clip (seen above) does reveal that she’s an old acquaintance of a familiar face.
The 20-second snippet has Alexandra removing a sack from the head of someone she identifies as an “old friend.” We then find out that it’s none other than Stick, the blind ninja mentor of Daredevil (as played by Scott Glenn).
So, what does this tell us? Well, actually, not much that we couldn’t have worked out before. We already know that Alexandra will be involved with the Hand, the evil ninja organization. It makes sense, then, that she would’ve previously gone up against Stick, who’s a...

Everybody seemed to have a hand in the “Beauty and the Beast” inspired opening number for the awards. Adam Devine went full beast mode and swung from a chandelier, but he was joined by Hailee Steinfeld, Mike Coulter, Josh Gad, and many more as the stage lit up in flames. Emma Watson took home the first award of the night for her turn as Belle in “Beauty and the Beast,” but it was less about that and more about the symbolism behind the first non-gendered acting award. “I think I’m being given this award because of who Belle is and.

So far, I've enjoyed every Netflix Marvel Series, even Iron Fist. Could it have been better? Sure, but it was still cool. Possibly one of the best aspects of the series was Jessica Henwick who plays Colleen Wing. She recently talked about The Defenders in an interview with EW and starts to get to hype it up saying:
"It's good, it's really good. I think people are going to love seeing characters interact with each other, they're going to see Colleen and Misty, they're going to love seeing Luke Cage with the Iron Fist, Danny Rand. I think fans are going to freak out."
Pretty big words, but I believe her. Personally, I haven't felt betrayed by the Marvel Netflix series. She also had this to say about how Colleen will be starting out in the series:
"We pick up with Colleen not in New York - Which is crazy,...

The next series in Netflix's planned four-way crossover miniseries, The Defenders, has hit the streaming service. All episodes of the first season of Luke Cage are now available for streaming on Netflix. After first appearing in Jessica Jones, Mike Coulter gets to headline his own series as the man with the unbreakable skin and super-strength, Luke Cage. As a series, Luke Cage manages to keep up the same strengths as Jessica Jones (and Daredevil) and even improves in several ways. Sadly, though, in one vital area, Luke Cage falls short. ...

That was San Deigo Comic Con, my friends, Sdcc 2016 passed us by like a whirlwind last weekend and for the Marvel Cinematic Universe Hall H panel that whirlwind came with unprecedented security to make sure none of that sweet, sweet video leaked out. Warner Bros, with the DC Comics stuff, they put everything online right away, Marvel...not so much.
We did luck out into some video from the Marvel Netflix panel, which decided to go balls out at a convention where not much was expected of them. It seemed reasonable that Luke Cage would get to suck up the spotlight, because we’re mere months away from the debut of his Netflix series, but basically rolling out teasers for the rest of the Netflix Phase 1 was very impressive.
First, though, Cage. Damn, this series looks hot and executive producer Cheo Coker really seems to get how important this is.

Production is continuing apace on Marvel and Netflix's "Luke Cage" TV series with some new set photos going online and confirming the presence of another villain on the show - Willis Stryker, aka Diamondback. Set photos demonstrate a fight between Mike Coulter's title character and Diamondback (Erik Laray Harvey).
In the comics he's a childhood friend of Luke's who frames Cage for a drug charge when they're young, which results in Luke being sent to prison. After a sabotaged experiment leaves Cage with super strength and unbreakable skin, he becomes a fugitive trying to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem. The series will premiere everywhere that Netflix is available on September 30th.

Marvel's newest television show Jessica Jones hits Netflix later this month on November 20th. A trailer for the Marvel/Netflix show hit the web a few weeks ago, after fans were treated to an early screening of the first episode at New York Comic Con. The trailer revealed the show's main characters, including Jones herself Krysten Ritter, Mike Coulter as Luke Cage, Rachael Taylor as Trish “Patsy” Walker, Carrie-Ann Moss as Jeri Hogarth and David Tennant as Kilgrave a.k.a. the Purple Man. While few story details were given away in the trailer, more information on the plot finally surfaced today. The complete titles and synopsis' were released earlier today via Comicbook.com. These titles have not been confirmed by Netflix, but if accurate, could provide some clues as to the direction of Jones' inaugural season. Other than major events, the majority of your memories are probably vaguely defined and few films have more deftly captured that hazy recollection of youth than Terence Davies’ riveting “The Long Day Closes.” More of an art piece than a traditional narrative, the film, recently added to The Criterion Collection, may first seem slow but becomes transfixing in the deliberate way that its creator doesn’t seek to replicate history but his memory of it.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
With dozens of songs, many of them in their entirety (we hear three before a line of dialogue), and some still shots that have the beauty of an artist’s eye, “The Long Day Closes” is a beautifully conceived and executed. A mother singing quietly to herself as she makes tea, the reflection of rain on a boy’s ceiling, the escape of the cinema — “The Long Day Closes...

The inimitable Terence Davies gets his first Criterion treatment this month with his 1992 title, The Long Day Closes, a superb memory poem drenched in melancholy nostalgia. A follow-up to the much more dark and brutal Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988), Davies returns once more to the memoirs of a ravaged childhood, further expanded upon from his first three short films which comprised The Terence Davies Trilogy (1976-1984). Swimming freely between quiet fantasy sequences and recollections of free associations as we drift in and out of abandoned ramshackle buildings of the past like a restless spirit, there is a delicate and fragile longing in Davies’ second feature, a ruminative exploration absent from the pained dirge of his previous film.

Leigh McCormack stars in 1992's The Long Day Closes.
The 1992 family drama The Long Day Closes is generally regarded as one of the finest works by the British writer/director Terence Davies (The Deep Blue Sea), one of Britain’s most respected filmmakers.
This autobiographical film takes on the perspective of a quiet, movie-loving boy named Bud (Leigh McCormack, in his one and only film role) growing up lonely in Liverpool in the 1950s. Rather than employ a straightforward narrative, Davies jumps in and out of time, swoops into fantasies and fears, summons memories and dreams.
An evocative, movie-and-music–besotted portrait of the artist as a young man, The Long Day Closes fuses clips and audio from classic movies into Bud’s childhood and brings it all to elegant life.

"Ringer" is having a fantastic first season, and next week's episode looks like it's going to up the ante even more. Check out the preview for Episode 8, "Maybe We Can Get a Dog Instead."
It appears that the FBI has enlisted the help of Malcolm (Mike Coulter) to bring in Bridget (Sarah Michelle Gellar). Anyone else think he won't do it? The preview also shows Malcolm being thrown onto a bed by two men. Are they the police or were they hired by Macawi (Zahn McClarnon)? Andrew (Ioan Gruffudd) seems pretty miffed after overhearing a conversation between Bridget/Siobhan and Malcolm. Will he think his wife is cheating? The plot thickens ...
No one can keep a secret forever. Is Bridget about to be found out? Watch the preview for Tuesday's (Nov. 8) episode and let us know what you think.

When he was asked to be guest director for a festival dedicated to films based on books, Jonathan Coe set out to disprove the adage that great literature makes terrible movies
In the course of their famous book-length interview, François Truffaut once asked Alfred Hitchcock about his approach to literary adaptation, and Hitch's response was as magisterial, worldly and mischievous as one would expect: "What I do is to read a story only once, and if I like the basic idea, I just forget all about the book and start to create cinema. Today I would be unable to tell you the story of Daphne du Maurier's The Birds. I read it only once, and very quickly at that."
Hitchcock's comment was the first thing that occurred to me when, towards the end of last year, I was approached with an interesting proposition. "From Page to Screen" is the...

The Oscars are but one week and a day away. My final predictions will be up tomorrow... and then the Oscar Symposium begins. Remember that? But until then let's talk Cinematography. The nominees are Slumdog Millionaire, Changeling, The Dark Knight, The Reader and Benjamin Button. In January it looked like the legendary Roger Deakins might pull two nods for Revolutionary Road and The Reader, but no Kate Winslet double feature emerged in the nominations. And Deakins is at a disadvantage yet again in terms of securing his first win. The frontrunner for this category, the frontrunner for most categories [sigh], is Slumdog Millionaire. But if there's a place outside of makeup and visual effects for Button to improve its trophy haul, it's right here.
Silly trivia alert!
You see... Button's Dp Claudio Miranda was filming Brad Pitt. It's time you knew: Lighting golden god Brad to perfection trumps nearly all in this category,...
