Comparing Amitabh Bachchan & Rajinikanth’s Coolie At The Box Office (Photo Credit – IMDb)
Coolie is back after 41 years. That’s it, that should be the news. Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic classic, which was released in 1983, has given its title to another superstar, Rajinikanth, who is headlining a film by the same name that will be directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj.
Rajinikanth’s Coolie Paycheck!
Reports suggest that Rajinikanth‘s paycheck for Loki’s film amounts to a whopping 280 crore! This is massive and probably one of the highest paid in the country. However, none has confirmed or denied the staggering amount being speculated as the superstar’s payment.
The film will be released in 2025, and only the announcement of the film has garnered so much love and hysteria. In a long teaser, Rajinikanth is introduced as Coolie . This is the same film that has a rumored appearance by Shah Rukh Khan as well.

Mumbai, Feb 18 (Ians) A Friday is the day when a new film releases in India. The exhibition trade plans its calendar of 52 weeks according to Fridays. Box Office is the term that gets bandied around. The entire film industry awaits positive box-office returns starting every Friday. That is where the wealth is created, the wealth that refuels the industry and keeps it going.
A cinema is the vehicle that carries your films to the people. Earlier, the word was masses, but because of the kind of exhibition trade that exists now, the word masses can no longer be used. Masses included people from all strata of society and gave a film the initial fillip. Watching a film was affordable and these masses made provision to watch a new film every Friday or during the weekend.

Music composer Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma, of Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame, has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Bhushan, not only as a celebration of his musical prowess, but also in acknowledgment of his role in defining the golden era of Hindi film music.
The octogenarian learnt the basics of music from his father, the renowned trumpeteer of his time, Ramprasad ‘Babaji’ Sharma. He then aced the violin under the guidance of the Goan musician Anthony Gonsalves, whom he went on to immortalise in the song ‘My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves’, which was picturised on Amitabh Bachchan (who also contributed to the vocals) in the 1977 film ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’.
Pyarelal teamed up with Laxmikant Kudalkar and they worked in more than 750 Hindi films between 1963 to 1998. They collaborated with the biggest names of the industry, including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shakti Samanta, Manmohan Desai and Yash Chopra.

The 1983 action comedy film ‘Coolie’ is directed by Manmohan Desai and written by Kader Khan. The film stars Amitabh Bachchan as Iqbal Aslam Khan, a railway coolie, who was separated from his mother Salma (Waheeda Rehman) due to Zafar’s (Kadar Khan) obsession with her that causes the destruction of her family and her mental breakdown.
Years later, fate unites her sons, Iqbal and Sunny (Rishi Kapoor) and they set out to save Salma from Zafar’s captivity. It also stars Rati Agnihotri, Shoma Anand, Suresh Oberoi and Puneet Issar.
The film is known for a fight scene with Puneet, during which Bachchan had a near-fatal injury due to a miscalculated jump.

When nothing works, how to make things work? No filmmaker, nor trade pundits have ever been able to predict this. In fact, there have been many instances of some film critics who could not predict a film’s success after watching it! Let alone film critics, even distributors who rejected a film after seeing it, have been proved wrong. In those days, a film was open for all distributors to watch during various stages of its making or even when completed. Many a time, a film thus rejected went on to become a blockbuster.
There were no buyers for ‘Zanjeer’, the Amitabh Bachchan blockbuster. The producer had to sell it for a song where the terms let the distributor keep the entire profit, instead of sharing it 50-50 with the producer as per the norm.

The 1975 film ‘Sholay’ was panned by all critics, but it went on to create a history. Film critics too can have a history. Really? Of course, they do, and it is a long one. Not surprisingly, it is a chequered history with mostly grey shades. Once upon a time, this was entirely a print media domain. There were some popular critics who people followed and believed but not enough to spend on a film. The genuine critics left their mark on the reviews they wrote. The print media does not enjoy the privilege alone anymore.
Now we have online critics and FM radio critics. Initially, these online critics wrote for an established portal, but soon, some realised that they need not belong or be answerable to an editor. The Net gives one all kinds of freedom. Some decided to start their own blogs or video reviews.

Yusuf Khan aka Dilip Kumar – the intense, multi-faceted actor who rose to be not just a superstar but a supergiantstar – and inspired generations of future actors and filmmakers with the art and science of his acting talents, remains glowing brightly in the starry film galaxy. On his 100th birth anniversary on Sunday, here’s a quick view of a few of his top, timeless, superhit films which still enthrall movie buffs, now mostly on the small screen.
In his acting career spanning 55 years, Dilip Kumar performed in an estimated 57 films with an awesome success rate of around 65 per cent.
The eternal mega-blockbuster was, of course, “Mughal-e-Azam” (1960), directed by the legendary Asif Karim (better known as K Asif), which shattered records and created new ones, many which still stand unbroken today.

When one is writing about Amitabh Bachchan it indeed is an existentialist dilemma what to add as a form of content, as so much information about him is available in all forms of content and the dilemma is further accentuated when Amitabh Bachchan chips in with his own content on a rather regular basis through all the available platforms of social media. But as they say, where there is a will to share an information, the writer indeed finds ways. The cue for this story arose from Sidharth Bhatia’s book on Manmohan Desai, titled, Amar Akbar Anthony which is replete with interesting bit of information about Amitabh Bachchan and the kind of relationship that he shared with Manmohan Desai.
How many of us would be aware even about the fact that Manmohan Desai had commented on Amitabh Bachchan that this six-footer would go nowhere, but after Amar Akbar Anthony...

Unlike Hollywood, where musicals are a separate genre, no Hindi film is complete without a full suite of songs – and they are what keeps a film alive in the minds of the people long after it has met its fate at the box office. Amitabh Bachchan fans may not recall the plots of his old landmark films, but the songs still strike a chord.
On the Big B’s 80th birthday, let us revisit some of his musical hits from his first decade of super and megastardom, where the songs were not just romantic interludes with his lady love of the moment, but also served various other purposes.
These helped him to express a range of moods, reveal his innermost yearnings, his philosophy of life, advancing the plot as action takes place in the background or surreptitiously, or evoke humour to lighten the mood.

On his 80th birthday, the thespian is not ready to call time on his career. Amitabh Bachchan has been a struggler, superstar, bankrupt, a small screen phenomenon, a celluloid colossus and has more or less essayed all types of roles to remain an iconoclast. The arc of his universe littered with peaks and troughs has been legendary.
In an age where hyperboles are common, he stands apart for his being and remains a true legend. Over the years, I have met him and spoken with him several times. Modest to the point of being self-deprecatory, he refuses to accept that his persona remains larger than life. Never afraid to speak his mind, he is distantly related to funambulism.
As he once told me: “I want to keep working, I shall continue to do my best.” He added, “Actually, I don’t know what else to do. Life is a blur...

Stars have an innate age like the quizzes that keep appearing on gaming sites like what is your real age? Jaya Bhaduri is ‘Guddi’ at heart, a teenager who never quite grows up, Nirupa Roy has never been young. Shammi is a young man in his early twenties while Raj Kapoor and others are in their late twenties.
Amitabh Bachchan is a man of matured years, a man who is at that age at which he has seen it done it all. There is not only a maturity and insight of years, but his is a face of having absorbed life in no small measure, a holism in thought that is not possible without a distance which the passions of youth cannot attain.

Most moviegoers would have learnt of the arrival of Amitabh Bachchan when producer-director Praksha Mehra’s film Zanjeer hit the screens.
The story and dialogue were by the Salim-Javed duo, who were charting a path to success with “Andaz”, “Adhikar”, “Seeta Aur Geeta”, and “Haathi Mere Saathi” to their credit. Probably, not big names enough to lure the veterans who were offered the film, to accept it. The film fell into the lap of a struggling newcomer, Amitabh Bachchan. “Zanjeer”, when released, went on to become a box office blockbuster.

The only thing I find missing is the Indian Post & Telegraph issuing a special commemorative stamp to honour him with a special denomination coin to follow in due time. This week, weekend and some days to come, it will be Amitabh Bachchan all over. In media, in cinemas, on television.

This news is from the South. It is a no-brainer. Since the Telugu film industry has set certain norms for members as well as the stars and the cinemas through the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce (Tfcc), the Tamil Film Producer Council (Tfpc) has decided to prove that it is the dormant body.
How else does the Tfpc plan to ask the film critics to refrain from writing / publishing reviews of new films till Sunday?! The major media, as in daily broadsheets, always reviewed films in the Sunday editions. The Sunday editions of the papers were meant for leisurely reading with opinions, features on various subjects as well as film reviews. Did that save a film from failing?
The business of movie reviews was all about passing of envelopes. Gradually, someone thought that giving stars to a film made better business sense. Four and five stars carried a decent price tag.

Synopsis: As we are celebrating the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (Akam), through these columns, under the Akam series an attempt is being made to traverse the journey from historical past when cinema made its debut (subject to availability of the resources) to the present times. World of cinema in India still has not warmed up to the value of documentation in historicity and this initiative is a small step in this direction.
Krishna Janamashtmi, which is celebrated across the country and in different parts of the world generally pays tribute to the pranks of the childhood of Lord Krishna or the love escapades with Radha, his eternal consort. However, the world of Hindi cinema had a different connotation of the manner in which this festival was celebrated and it continues to have the same manifestation in present times, the template of this celebration module mainly concentrated around Mumbai and its suburbs.

Nothing unexpected happens in the tremulously awaited trailer of S S Rajamouli’s Rrr. Apparently the 3 ‘R’s stands for Raama Roudra Rushitam, Rise Revolt Revenge. Jai Hind to that.
Everyone in the trailer is in a hurry. The pace of narration is so breathless that you may miss the one shot of Ajay Devgan that comes and goes like a breeze. What we are left staring at(wide-eyed open-mouthed, of course) is a filmmaker trying to equal the vision of his own last film.
So does Rrr match the epic grandeur of Baahubali? The answer to that is a firm no. Why should it? Baahubali belonged to the kitschy kingdom of Hindu mythology. Rrr is Rajamouli’s depiction of the British Empire where apparently the sun never set. But star-sons are a different matter. Antim: The Final Truth
Starring Salman Khan, Aayush Sharma Introducing Mahima Makwana
Directed by Mahesh Manjrekar
By the time Varun Dhawan –yesssss, he is in it too,so rejoice all you fans of the pinup province—shows up for a vigorous dance number, we don’t know who’s coming or going. Or staying. If you consider your own dilemma as a viewer desirous of being freed from this frenetic dizzying dance of debt and death.
Antim means well—it has to, since it is directed by Mahesh Manjrekar who once made Vaastav and City Of Gold, powerful parables on exploitation and violence powered by a genuine social concern. Antim is what Manmohan Desai used to call a proposal film: sign the hero first… during those days the music director also mattered… and then weave a story around him.

Hotel Mumbai
Starring: Anupam Kher, Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazneen Boniadi
Directed by Anthony Maras
Like all cinema on terrorism, this partially-gripping recreation of 26/11 terror attack on Mumbai’s Taj hotel, walks that thin cracked-ice line between being vivid and exploitative.
For a film that boasts of so much raw (and still hurting) material and such a charismatic lineup of actors, Hotel Mumbai turns out to be a disappointingly tame affair. It has more bark than actual bite, more spark than a raging fire. The characters are made to behave as if they are part of a normal Hollywood-styled disaster film like Airport, Towering Inferno or Earthquake. There is hardly a person we empathize with as a victim of a monstrous siege when Mumbai was held at gunpoint by a cluster of brainwashed young terror-trained emissaries.

Marjaavan
Starring Siddharth Malhotra, Riteish Deshmukh, Tara Sutaria, Rakul Preet Singh
Written & Directed by Milap Zaveri
All right then, Marjaavan is a homage to the masala movies of the 1980s… Deewaar, Amar Akbar Anthony, Lawaaris , Muqaddar Ka Sikindar (Rakul Preet Singh reprises Rekha’s Zohrabai) and one very specific homage to Ramesh Sippy’s Shaan.
This is a film directed by a man who has grown up watching mainstream Hindi cinema. He loves every shriek, every wolf-whistle and every thump of the fist falling on a bare face, the kuckles leaving an imprint across the bloodied cheek. Revenge was never sweatier.
The cheeky ode to the mainstream Hindi potboiler works so long as you don’t try to compare it with the commercial cinema of this millennium. Writer-director Milap Zaveri happily goes back in time to recreate a soooper-hero in a made-to-order soooper-potboiler where blood boils to a simmering tension over and over again,...

Amitabh Bachchan's journey of five decades to become the Bollywood "Shahenshah" was not always a smooth ride. Indeed, his life is nothing short of brilliant biopic material. Early rejections were followed by a phase when he made his mark as a promising actor, which was soon overshadowed by the kind of superstardom Bollywood never saw before or after. When the superstar tried his hand at film entrepreneurship, he went bankrupt, only to bounce back and claim supremacy as a super brand and respectability as an icon.
The first reaction of the industry all those years ago, however, was far from welcoming. His tall and lanky frame, and the baritone of his voice, were deemed unsuitable for Bollywood's image of a perfect hero back then. These factors were pointed out as flaws, and reasons why he wouldn't be able to make it big in the industry.

Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota
Starring Abhimanyu Dassani,Radhika Madan, Gulshan Devaiah
Directed by Vasan Bala
When Manmohan Desai used those prophetic words about a man not feeling any pain, little did he know how they would be used decades later in a film that is crazy and outrageous, funny and exasperating. Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota pays a homage to filmy maschismo while at the same time ridiculing the conventions of masculine aggression by nudging prodding and awakening the funnybone as other bones snap crack and shatter.
You see, our hero Surya (debutant Abimanyu Dassani) can’t feel any pain. Neither, apparently can the director Vasan Bala who constructs an edifice of spoofy self-mockery that is unlike anything we’ve seen in our films. Bala wants to deconstruct all the myths that we’ve grown up watching regarding screen heroism.
Which is not to say, everything in Mard Ko Dard…...

Thugs Of Hindostan
Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Fatima Sana Sheikh, Katrina Kaif
Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya
Not done! You can’t take two of Bollywood’s superstars together for the first time and then make a film that confounds your senses, boggles your mind and tries your patience.
Thugs Of Hindostan does all of this, and more. It is guilty of many crimes, not the least of them being the rather strange attempt to pass off the corny as the epic, and the dishevelled as the spectacular. The plot, we are told, is based on an ancient novel by Philip Meadows Taylor which no one seems to have read.
The film, if you ask me, also deserves much the same treatment. It is an overblown, undercooked piece of abomination masquerading as majestic when it is nothing of the sort. Speckled on top and hollow and dull inside this...

Amitabh Bachchan hurts his shoulder during action scene shoot with Aamir Khan for Thugs Of Hindostan
Injuries and illnesses are no strangers to even the mightiest movie star of our land Amitabh Bachchan. In fact Mr Bachchan has been saved from the jaws of death on many occasions, the most serious being the near-fatal accident on the sets of Manmohan Desai’s Coolie. One would think Mr Bachchan would have learnt his lesson by now. But the super-performer continues to take the most injury-prone risks during shooting. His latest derring-do to have landed him with an injury happened on the location of Vijay Krishna Acharya’s Thugs Of Hindostan last week. Apparently during an intense action sequence with Aamir, Mr Bachchan injured his shoulder.

Om Shanti Om, as soon as you read the title, I bet like me, the music and the film immediately begins to play in your head. Directed by Farah Khan, the film starred Shah Rukh Khan, Arjun Rampal, Shreyas Talpade, Kirron Kher and introduced Deepika Padukone. If you can believe it, it has been 10 years since the magic of Oso hit the big screen.
It is as Farah says, a movie, within a movie within a movie. Set in the 70s and present day, Om Shanti Om has films, stars, sets, drama, dance, action, romance, revenge, reincarnation and finally Happys Endings. It is a movie that has it all and more!
To set the stage check out the trailer that gives you a glimpse into the world of Om and Shantipriya.
I was very lucky to be able to have an in-depth conversation with director Farah Khan about Om Shanti Om.

The Sarkar franchise is an example of the strong bond a filmmaker and an actor can possibly share. For the third installment of the hit franchise, Ram Gopal Varma teamed up with the legend Amitabh Bachchan for a no hold barred conversation right before the release of Sarkar 3.
The duo shot for a special video, where Rgv donned the hat of a hard-nosed interviewer while Bachchan Sr took on his probing questions. The chat revealed unheard facets of Big B’s personality. The film maker called his muse the biggest liar for attributing the success of his performances to his directors and writers.
The interview sees Rgv and the actor discussing the process of filmmaking and touching upon Bachchan’s entry into Bollywood and the director’s first memory of the actor, their struggles and anecdotes from the sets of filmmakers like Manmohan Desai, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Yash Chopra.

In art, as in life, consistency is not a quality that is easily obtainable. In the life that is created in Vishal Bhardwaj’s art the characters are so flawed and fractured and so driven down to destruction by their own demoniacal desires that you fear they would collapse under the weight of their own ambitions and longings.
This is true as much of the characters as the director himself. Vishal Bhardwaj’s latest arguably his most ambitious film to date could have ended up being the Bombay Velvet/Mohenjo Daro of 2017. Presented by Emmay Entertainment, Guddu Engiineer is a short film marking Nikkhil Advani’s 6th movie as a producer. The director revealed, “The film is part of a project in which five directors from India and Pakistan are making short films. Among the Indian directors, there’s Tigmanshu Dhulia, Aparna Sen, Ketan Mehta and Bejoy Nambiar apart from me.”

You may have heard it in every film that has been made on the theme of Colonial India from Manmohan Desai's Mard to Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan. Somewhere or the other the Britishers in Indian films are bound to refer to Indian as 'bloody Indians' No more so. For Vibhu Puri's delicately drawn period film Hawaizaada which is set in Colonial India, the censor board in all its wisdom asked the 'bloody' to be removed from the 'bloody Indian.' Sighs the director Vibhu Puri, "I had no choice but to replace the word 'bloody' in 'bloody Indian' with 'crazy'. I am aware that the Britishers in our films have been shown to use the term 'bloody Indian' in numerous films. But if I had insisted I'd have got a 'UA' certificate instead of 'U'. So I preferred to change the supposedly offensive word as it made no difference to my narrative.

It’s not for nothing that Farah Khan is often compared to Manmohan Desai. Who else in the present generation of film makers can come up with a masala fare with a near perfect blend of ingredients like revenge for wronged father, victory of underdogs, impossible diamond heist, and a good dose of patriotism to boot!
Charlie (Shahrukh Khan) puts together a team of ‘losers’ to carry out a diamond heist. A dynamite expert, a safe cracker, a computer hacker and a tapori gear up to win the world’s biggest dance championship to attain this goal. Training this bunch of men with two left feet is bar dancer Mohini (Deepika Padukone). How this team of bad dancers goes on to win the championship as well as steal the diamonds in true blue Hindi film ishtyle is what Farah Khan’s latest offering is all about.
