With the Critics’ Choice Awards just hours away on Sunday January 13, our 30 Oscar experts from major media outlets are hoping to get guidance from these key precursor prizes as to what will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Their votes remain split between four films, with two of these far out front of the other two.
Since being all but shut out of the Golden Globes, “A Star is Born” has seen its lead over “Roma” in the Best Picture race at the Oscars shrink. It now leads our experts tally by a vote of 16 to 10. Three of our experts are holding out hope for “Green Book,” which won Best Comedy/Musical at the Globes while one is backing “BlacKkKlansman.” [See the most up-to-date Best Picture rankings by our 30 Experts.]
Although “A Star is Born” enjoys a clear majority of first-place votes from the experts, it is not that far ahead of “Roma” and “Green Book” on our Best Picture odds chart.

In the first week of November, “A Star is Born” has pulled ahead of “Roma” in the Best Picture race according to the predictions of the 26 Oscar Experts at Gold Derby. Bradley Cooper‘s remake of the Hollywood classic, which continues to do boffo business, now has the backing of 14 of our industry insiders (that’s up by one). Nine pundits are forecasting a win for Alfonso Cuaron‘s family drama (down by two). “Black Panther,” “The Favourite” and “Green Book” have one Oscarologist apiece in their corner. [See the most up-to-date Best Picture rankings by our 26 Experts.]
But while “A Star is Born” now has a clear edge for first place votes from the experts, it is only just ahead of “Roma” on our Best Picture odds chart. It leads with odds of 7/1 to win the top Academy Award while “Roma” is just behind at 15/2. This discrepancy is down to the relative rankings of these two films by all of the experts,...

Six out of the 10 Experts making Oscar predictions at Gold Derby put “BlacKkKlansman” out front to win Best Picture at this early leg of the race. See how they rank their predicted nominees according to likelihood of winning. When all of the Experts’ picks are combined, this is the collective list.
Currently, “BlacKKKlansman” has an impressive lead considering its hefty competition – including major new flicks by Oscar-winning directors Alfonso Cuaron (“Roma”) and Damien Chazelle (“First Man”) – but Spike Lee’s new drama about a black police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s probably benefits from being first out of the gate. It’s now playing in theaters, trumpeted by upbeat film reviews (96 score at Rotten Tomatoes) while most rival ponies are still in the stable.

“I’m sick of Hollywood doing nothing but remakes.”
“Hollywood never makes anything original anymore.”
I pretty much see some iteration of those comments a handful of times a week throughout all the comments in the articles we post. And I totally get it. Between all the superhero films, the movies based on books, and reboots of big budget franchises from the days of yore, it does kind of feel like that’s all Hollywood ever does.
And I can understand the sentiment from fans.
Most news sites like us tend to plaster the latest and greatest in the next big budget franchise without a second glance. These are the films that many geek audiences have been waiting decades to see brought to the big screen, so their hunger is there. Add in with that the good faith studios have made with mainstream audiences based on the inherent accessibility and...

With the 'Global Fan Screening' for Bryan Singer's "X-Men: Apocalypse" having taken place today, the first reviews have started coming out and the reaction is surprisingly very divided.
Various trades and papers have published their reviews which have been underwhelming, citing complaints of the film being overstuffed and monotonous with only a few highlights including the Quicksilver sequence once again. Here's just a sampling of tweet reactions from various film writers of note along with some trade review quotes.
Full Reviews
"Both Captain America: Civil War and X-Men: Apocalypse are superhero extravaganzas with severe traffic control problems, but while the former keeps things flowing reasonably smoothly, the new film, set to arrive in theaters just weeks later, resembles a bumper-car nightmare..." - Todd McCarthy, THR

The tension on Mount Everest had been building for years. Rich Westerners pay a fortune to climb the world’s highest peak, but the Sherpas — a Nepalese ethnic minority who live in the shadow of the mountain — do most of the hardest and most dangerous work paving the path for the adventure climbers, and are paid little and get next to no recognition for achieving the same high-altitude feats. There have been literal traffic jams — of foot traffic, that is — on the mountain in recent years as the experience has drawn more and more outsiders. In 2013 it all came to actual fisticuffs between the Sherpas and Westerners on Everest.

My first trip to Pixar’s Emeryville campus was 13 years ago. That alone was enough to give me pause when I was invited to the “Inside Out” press day. I’ve done it. I’ve taken the tour. I’ve seen the campus. I’ve met the artists and I’ve seen their amazing work spaces and I’ve had a chance to walk through pretty much every department. I remember standing outside the server room my first time up, looking in at the brain of this remarkable company, amazed at how those racks of black technology represented this collision of all this amazing human artistry. My other hesitation, honestly, was because we were told that we’d be seeing “part” of the movie. I’ve grown wary over the years of seeing movies in chunks because you can’t really react in any meaningful way since you’re not seeing something that’s complete.

Now that quirky "Foxcatcher" has thrived at the major film festivals (winning Best Director at Cannes) and survived film critics (scoring 85% at RottenTomatoes), it looks like it is about to scale the third hurdle on the way to serious Oscar contention: box office. Last weekend it only opened in six theaters in limited release, but it earned $45,146 per screen. That's cool. See how our 25 Oscar Experts rank contenders in all top categories -Break- Currently, our 25 Oscar experts predict it will score six nominations: Best Picture, Director (Bennett Miller), Actor (Steve Carell), Supporting Actor (Mark Ruffalo), Original Screenplay and Makeup. The 16 Experts who bet it will make the Best Picture list (assuming there will be 10 nominees): Ed Douglas (Comingsoon), Thom Geier, Mike Hogan (Vanity Fair), Dave Karger (Fandango), Tariq Khan (Fox News), Scott Mantz (Access Hollywood), Mary Milliken (Reuters), Steve Pond (The Wrap), Janelle Ri...'...

The upcoming Terminator Genisys has revealed some official plot details. Will this be a new Judgment Day or another Salvation? We're discussing what has us excited as what has us less-than-enthused for the planned franchise reboot trilogy. Meanwhile, Interstellar has just started to arrive in theaters and will be everywhere this Friday, November 7. We share our thoughts on the latest from Christopher Nolan and discuss a rabid fanbase that are decidedly not fans of certain less-than-stellar reviews. "Interstellar" has begun to screen for critics around the world and the first reviews are coming in with some intriguingly divided reactions. Pretty much every review praises the visuals, scope, acting and ambition of the project and urge readers to see it on the biggest screen possible.
Yet, quite a few have some big issues with the script, the manipulative emotion and the themes on display. Here's a sampling of review quotes so far:
"Illustrates the very best and the very worst of Nolan as a writer-director. On the plus side, there's a stunning portrayal of how far-reaching space travel might work... and a vision of robots like nothing I've ever seen in a movie. Weighing against that, without getting into spoilers, is a third act of staggering wrongheadedness, along with female characters whose intellect takes a back seat to their exploding emotionalism and rage..." - Alonso Duralde, The Wrap...

Frank Grillo and Zach Gilford, stars of this week's release The Purge: Anarchy, were made available to the L.A. press last weekend. And even though our East Coast contributor, Ed Douglas, filed some video interviews recently (check them out here), I leapt at the chance to talk to these two. Our discussion took place within one of the sets of The Purge: Breakout, a nail-biting experience in which you are trapped in an environment and forced to escape before "The Purge" commences. My Grillo interview literally happened the second I stepped out of the experience, so my heart was racing. In the film, Grillo plays a man who uses "The Purge" as an excuse to seek revenge. Gilford's character, meanwhile, is faced - with his girlfriend - with a broken down car as "The Purge" begins. He's forced to man up as the night goes on.

The new Tom Cruise sci-fi war movie "Edge of Tomorrow" has been screened for various critics and has drawn mostly praise.
Many reviews so far have been glowing about the Doug Liman-directed film with its apparent strengths being not just the clever exploitation of its "Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers" style premise, but also the sheer fun and playfulness it offers - something not really on display in the very serious toned trailers.
Most of the debate over it seems to be more about the third act, and more specifically the ending being a slight drop in quality as to what comes before. Here's some choice quotes on the film:
"A cleverly crafted and propulsively executed sci-fi thriller... this enjoyably gimmicky entertainment is not only one of Cruise's better recent efforts, it's also arguably the most purely pleasurable film Doug Liman has directed in the 12 years since 'The Bourne Identity'.

What was the biggest Oscars shocker? There weren't that many of them! Everything basically went according to script at moviedom's top award. While we like to be right about our predictions at these things, a good surprise can keep the show exciting. • Will Smith presenting Best Picture struck me as odd. While Smith is a two-time Oscar nominee, why is he presenting the biggest award of the evening? That honor is usually reserved for someone with a very high standing in the industry like Jack Nicholson, Steven Spielberg, Denzel Washington or Tom Hanks. I think it's safe to say that Will Smith is not on that level. • The victory by "Mr. Hublot" as Best Animated Short was the biggest jawdropper among winners. Only one of our experts saw it coming: Ed Douglas (Comingsoon). All others had predicted "Get a Horse!" • Omg! The audience actually was quiet and respectful during the In Memoriam presentation.

BuildWidget('hr82'); Ed Douglas is known as the Weekend Warrior at ComingSoon.net and I believe I first met him back in 2006 or so at the San Diego Comic Con and today it was revealed he's battling acute leukemia and has no health insurance. A fundraiser was started on GiveForward.com where you can contribute whatever you can to help him win this fight. When it first started the goal was $10,000. That goal was shattered and it has now been bumped to $50,000 and continues to climb. Only a short while ago I added my donation and the total is up $18,763 with 71 days to go. Chip in whatever you can by using the widget I embedded in this post or by clicking here. Win this fight Ed!

“The primary goal of Under The Scares [in which—full disclosure—this writer appeared] was to help young filmmakers make good movies without throwing their money away,” says director Steve Villeneuve. The follow-up, he explains, “will focus on the future of independent horror. In this film, I want to show how the evolution of technology has impacted the viewing experience of independent cinema, and the ability of these filmmakers to monetize their product since the 1970s.”
Already announced as part of Independent Scares are such genre veterans as Glass Eye Pix topper Larry Fessenden (pictured above), The Blair Witch Project and Lovely Molly’s Eduardo Sanchez, longtime producer/director Fred Olen Ray, Andrew van den Houten of Headspace, The Woman and others and Independent-International honcho Sam Sherman (pictured right). Villeneuve reveals to Fango that other talking heads will include Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer and The Shrine director Jon Knautz, JimmyO Burril and April Monique Burril of The Chainsaw Sally Show,...

In part one of our video interviews with the cast and creative team behind Mama (opening this Friday, January 18th), our man Ed Douglas sat down with stars Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau to discuss the supernatural thriller.
Here on the West Coast, I had a bit more time to focus on those behind-the-camera: Producer Guillermo del Toro and director Andy Muschietti and his sister/co-writer/co-producer Barbara Muschietti. After the jump, find our video interview in which we discuss the original film upon which the feature is based, expanding the idea for the big screen, casting the youngsters and what Del Toro would have done had he directed the film.

At midnight Us east coast time, Twitter bore witness to a flood of reactions to "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." Having screened for select international media in New Zealand last week, and then in Los Angeles and New York over the weekend, the press reviews had all been embargoed until a few hours ago.
As a result, the reviews and rants flew thick and fast with much of it centered around not just the film, but the decision to screen it for media with Jackson's experimental 48 frames-per-second (Hfr) technology.
Putting the latter aside for the moment, the film itself scored mixed to positive reviews with praise for the various actors, and the common criticisms relating mostly to a bloated length, a slow first hour, and overuse of CG. Some say Thorin is the only dwarf with any real development, others seemed to be taken surprise by the lighter and broad...

Shh's Ed Douglas caught up with Chloe Moretz at Nycc over the weekend. The majority of the interview is about her turn as Carrie in Kimberley Piece's upcoming remake, but she also spoke a little about returning to the world of Kick-Ass to play the ultra-violent Hit-Girl. Moretz suggests we will see a more of the character this time around, and talks about what it was like to go - pretty much literally - straight from shooting Carrie to the Kick-Ass 2 set.. "I'm not going back in time, which is good. I'm growing up with this, so it's just an older sophisticated version of Hit Girl and we don't take away who she was but you see Mindy more in this movie and you see her struggle with who she is and try to figure out what she likes, if she likes this, if she likes that, who is she?...

Screening to a packed audience at the New York Film Festival on Monday night, tweets and reviews for an "almost finished" version of Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" quickly flooded the blogosphere and the reaction was good but not unanimous.
The most frequently praised element was the performances, in particular Tommy Lee Jones as Thaddeus Stevens was frequently singled out as the best bet to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar come next February. Daniel Day-Lewis and Sally Field were also highly praised for their work.
The most common reaction seems to be that it's a solid procedural drama, with a surprising amount of outright comedy, that's certainly worthy of a Best Picture nomination. It also avoids Spielberg's signature weaknesses of being overwrought and gushingly sentimental. However it's not a runaway winner and might struggle to achieve recognition outside certain categories.
Here's some key quotes:

Let it never be said that Hollywood is not creative – at least when it comes to changing up things like, oh, the seasons. The summer movie season has progressively gotten longer and longer, kicking off when we’re still technically in the spring months, and then encroaching on September (which is autumn, because it’s back-to-school time, okay?). Now, Warner Bros. has officially decided that the month of May is summer (“early summer,” but “summer” nonetheless) in a press release announcing the “early summer” (read: May) release date for Baz Luhrmann‘s The Great Gatsby. The potentially troubled film, once slated for a glitzy Christmas release, was pushed away from the holiday season last month, with a promise that a new release date would be set soon. WB has announced today (via ComingSoon) that The Great Gatsby (still inexplicably in 3D) will open in North America on May 10, 2013, with international release following a week later. As...

Joel and Ethan Coen's Inside Llewyn Davis is still without a distributor and has so far avoided the festival circuit. The New York Film Festival seemed like a good fit given the film's period setting in the heart of the early 1960s folk music revolution in Greenwich Village, but if it's going to play there it will have to be a surprise appearance since it isn't part of the selection. Yet, star Oscar Isaac recently hint at the possibility the film may hit theaters before the end of the year at an event in which Isaac performed a song from the upcoming film. Caught on camera by Ed Douglas from Coming Soon. Isaac performed "Dink's Song," which has been performed by the likes of Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and Dave Van Ronk, the latter of the list served as the inspiration for the Coens' film. Special Effects Artist Robert Kurtzman recently opened the doors to the Kurtzman Institute of Art, a school where students learn the fine art of F/X. Kurtzman has now announced the list of guest speakers and special in-class guests who will be visiting the school, and it's pretty mpressive.
According to the Kurtzman Institute of Art website, "The facility gives students first-hand access to decades of genuine Hollywood experience. With classes lead by top-notch instructors with proven experience, students can get on the fast track to success in film, television, amusement, and many other creative industries. In addition, students get real world experience, working alongside respected professionals, in a fully functional film and effects studio during the course of their instruction, providing a truly unique educational experience."
Among those whom students can count on learning from this year are: Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Andrew Divoff (Wishmaster), Don Coscarelli (Phantasm,...

A Note: Prometheus began screening to the press this week. I've seen it and our man in London, Ed Douglas, has seen it. Unfortunately, reviews are under embargo for now, but we're allowed to spill our initial thoughts. Below, you'll find Ed's early assessment. I'd prefer to keep everything I have to say for my review, but what I will tell you is that I liked it very much - but didn't Love it as I had hoped - and I have my reasons, much of it having to do with the script. For now, let's let Ed take the floor. Look for my full review soon. - Ryan Turek
By now, it may already be known that a bunch of sites were flown to London, England for the premiere and junket of Ridley Scott's Prometheus, and ComingSoon.net was one of them.

Our man Ed Douglas in Las Vegas now, preparing to cover Cinemacon for ComingSoon.net. Since he's there, he's snapped off a few posters on display for some upcoming horror fare.
Up first, is a pretty killer one-sheet for Sinister, directed by Scott Derrickson and from the producers of Paranormal Activity and Insidious. Ethan Hawke plays a true crime novelist struggling to find his next big story discovers a box of home videos showing other families being brutally murdered, but his investigation soon leads him to a supernatural entity that may be placing his own family in harm's way.
Then, we have the one-sheet for House at the End of the Street, starring Jennifer Lawrence. The film opens September 21st.

In what’s a decidedly different version from the trailer released yesterday, nevermind it being a longer one too, watch this international trailer that debuted in Manila for 20th Century’s Fox wildly anticipated Prometheus. After the enthusiastic response yesterday at WonderCon and all over the internet, many were full of praise for the new preview:
Devin Faraci (@devincf): “New Prometheus Trailer rules. Brush up on your Chariots of the Gods.”
Mike Eisenberg (@Eisentower30): “Somebody give the trailer-makers a statue. They are unreal.”
Ed Douglas (@EDouglasWW): “The fact that Ridley Scott hasn’t won an Oscar is an enormous crime.”
Garth Franklin (@darkhorizons): “Scott’s certainly made The trailer for a film this Summer. Beats the crap out of any Avengers or Tdkr clip so far.”
The Playlist (@ThePlaylist): “Nolan’s move. Prometheus trailer is outstanding.”

All 30 Oscarologists polled by Gold Derby believe "The Artist" will win Best Picture and they predict Christopher Plummer ("Beginnings") and Octavia Spencer ("The Help") for Best Supporting Actor and Actress, but they clash over the lead acting races. Most experts foresee a Best Actor victory by recent SAG champ Jean Dujardin ("The Artist"), but quite a few opt for George Clooney instead: Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes), Jd Cargill (CNN), Ed Douglas (Comingsoon), Bradley Jacobs (Us Weekly), Dave Karger (Entertainment Weekly), Kevin Lewin (WENN), Michael Musto (Village Voice), Kevin Polowy (Next Movie), Richard Rushfield (Daily Beast), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood/ Indiewire) and Dave White (Movies.com). An overwhelming majority back Viola Davis ("The Help") for Best Actress, but there are a few notable dessenters picking Meryl Streep ("The Iron Lady"), including Tariq...

The race is getting fun now and I expect tomorrow we'll get to talk about screenplays as the Writers Guild should be announcing their nominees any time now. However, today the talk is Best Picture on the heels of the Producers Guild nominations this morning, which included one film that is sure to throw a kink in the works of any Oscar prognosticator -- Bridesmaids. But first let's get the usual suspects out of the way... The PGA announced ten nominees for their Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year Award and of the bunch, seven were the repeat offenders: The Artist, The Descendants, The Help, Hugo, Midnight in Paris, Moneyball and War Horse. There seems to be a general agreement that these seven films will be nominated for Best Picture. Considering the new rules, where there can be anywhere from 5-10 nominees for Best Picture, it could all end there and we go home.

As far back as 2008 we were hearing that the final film in The Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy (also called the Blood and Ice-Cream trilogy) was moving forward.
Following on from the success of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz the team of Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and director Edgar Wright hinted that the third film, which has had the title of The World’s End hanging around for years, was at one stage gravitating towards a doomsday/sci-fi movie.
If the Red of Shaun of the Dead was the buckets of blood and the Blue of Hot Fuzz was the thin line of the police force then perhaps at one stage the Mint-green (the final flavour in the Cornetto trilogy) was pointing towards Little Green Men. However with Pegg and Frost’s recent sojourn in Nevada with a crude little alien named Paul it may mean that The World...
