Sebastián Lelio is setting the soundtrack of a feminist revolution with musical film “The Wave (La Ola)” — it just wrapped production.
The Academy Award-winning director helms the film that follows music student Julia (Daniela López) who gets involved in the growing feminist #MeToo movement on her university campus. Amid the excitement of protest marches, per the official synopsis, Julia joins her friends in dancing and singing, revisiting her own experiences of mistreatment. As she gathers the courage to share her own abuse story, she unexpectedly becomes a central figure in the movement — a role she didn’t foresee, which forces her to address her identity as a survivor in a society that promises change but remains resistant to it.
Avril Aurora, Lola Bravo, and Paulina Cortés also star. See below for first-look images.

Rev up your DeLorean and check that old flux capacitor because Cannes 2023 is looking like a trip back to the future.
After the disruption and near devastation brought on by the Covid pandemic, and concerns that the rising tide of global streamers would wash away the business model of independent film distributors worldwide, buyers and sellers arrive on the Croisette this year on a wave of good (ish) news on the return of the theatrical business and a bumper crop of big movies, both blockbuster-y and arthouse-esque, up for sale at the Marché.
“The box office in North America is back up pretty close [to pre-pandemic levels],” notes Rob Carney, vp of sales at FilmNation, referencing first-quarter figures that showed domestic revenues of $1.8 billion, just 25 percent off the record highs of 2019. Gross box office in the European Union (EU) and the U.K. last year, as reported by the European Audiovisual Observatory, was up 70 percent from the 2021 figures,...

Once upon a time, Todd Haynes’ hot Cannes Competition title “May December” — a psychological drama based on the Mary Kay Letourneau case, starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore — would already have a North American distributor. (A source placed its budget just under $20 million.) However, we no longer live in a world where buyers will overpay for a film before they can gauge its theatrical value: The risk is just too great.
That’s why sellers CAA and UTA opted to not show the film to distributors before the festival. Instead, they’re betting that an enthusiastic response from Cannes media and audiences will boost its sale price.
“People are being skittish about paying top dollar for a movie as easily as they did in the past,” said Sony Pictures Classics co-president Michael Barker. At Cannes, SPC will screen the Pedro Almodovar gay western short “Strange Way of Life” starring Ethan Hawke...

Carl Sagan, for those who may not know, was an astronomer and charismatic cosmologist who came into the public eye in 1980 with the broadcast of his PBS series "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage." That show, in addition to Sagan's many novels, books, and lectures, helped popularize astral science, bringing casual conversations about space to new heights.
Sagan's popularity is understandable. He was affable and well-spoken, and he talked about fun scientific concepts like the existence of UFOs, and the actual, mathematical odds that an alien civilization might someday visit Earth; given the size of the universe, Sagan calculated that there are at least a million Earth-like civilizations out there somewhere. The film "Contact" is based on his novel. Sagan was also a major advocate for marijuana use, and was rather spiritual, despite often speaking out against religion or the existence of an intelligent God. He was a fascinating dude.

After both playing key roles in TV miniseries Under The Banner Of Heaven, Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones are joining a new film that should see them sharing the screen a whole lot more. They're on for Sebastián Lelio's new film, Voyagers.
Neither a remake of the 2021 teen sci-fi movie nor an adaptation of the obscure, short-lived time-travelling TV series, this Voyagers will instead focus on the love that bloomed between astronomer/writer/presenter Carl Sagan and documentary producer/director Ann Druyan.
Voyagers unfolds in 1977 as NASA prepared to launch humanity’s first interstellar probes. A team led by Sagan sets out to create a message to accompany them, known as the Golden Record, which included music and images, for possible alien civilizations. But what starts out as a race-against-the-clock mission blossoms into a love story between Sagan and Druyan.

Andrew Garfield is heading for the stars. Reports indicate the Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hacksaw Ridge actor Andrew Garfield is playing astronomer Carl Sagan in Voyagers, a new film from Sebastian Lelio. In addition to Garfield, Daisy Edgar-Jones joins the cast as Cosmos filmmaker Ann Druyan. The project is going to the Cannes market this month, courtesy of FilmNation Entertainment.
The Voyagers story takes place in 1977 at NASA, where Sagan’s team is preparing to launch humanity’s first interstellar probes. The launch includes a message from the team responsible for the monumental devices, dubbed The Golden Record. The story begins as a race to complete the mission on time, then transitions into an unforeseen love story between Sagan and Druyan. FilmNation Entertainment introduced Druyan to screenwriters Lelio and Jessica Goldberg, who wrote the original Voyagers screenplay based on interviews with Druyan and other contributors to the Golden Record mission.

According to Vulture, Carl Sagan and his wife, Ann Druyan, spent the early '80s writing a film treatment based on Sagan's 1985 novel, "Contact." After cycling through a few different production companies, a slew of screenwriters, and two directors, the film finally made it to the big screen in 1997. Starring Academy Award winners Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey, the movie was a moderate success, but there were a lot of mixed feelings about the film's ending.
At the beginning of the movie, Ellie Arroway (Foster) is a hard-core skeptic about anything that can't be verified by science, so she spends all her time listening to the skies for proof of intelligent life. Towards the end of the film, she finally encounters extraterrestrials, but cannot provide proof of the experience. Ultimately, Arroway and the audience must choose between faith or science, and a lot of viewers didn't appreciate the ambiguous ending.

Robert Zemeckis' "Contact" hit theaters in July 1997 and managed to break the mold of sci-fi drama prevalent during the time. The reasons were manifold. Ann Druyan, who was the creative director at NASA at the time, along with partner and acclaimed astronomer Carl Sagan, envisioned an unconventional tale about a headstrong female scientist on a mission. Moreover, the aliens in "Contact" were not terrifying monsters that needed to be defeated for humans to survive, making it a very different from popular films of the time like "Alien Resurrection," which was also released in 1997.

National Geographic is back in the hunt for Emmy Awards after dominating last year’s ceremony with seven wins for “Free Solo.” Now this go-to cable network for science nerds is hoping “Cosmos: Creating Possible Worlds,” its online offshoot of documentary series “Cosmos: Possible Worlds,” can find success in Best Short Form Nonfiction Or Reality Series at the 2020 Emmys.
The main program is hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and is a sequel to Nat Geo’s “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey,” which went home with four Emmys in 2014: Music Composition, Main Title Theme Music, Nonfiction Writing and Nonfiction Sound Editing. That itself was a re-imagining of Carl Sagan‘s iconic PBS series “Cosmos: A Personal Voyage” (1980), one of the most-watched science programs in television history.
SEENat Geo announces 2020-2021 schedule: Bobby Bones, Cesar Milan, Gordon Ramsay and ‘Genius: Aretha’ at last?
“Creating Possible Worlds” showcases behind-the-scenes moments and interviews from the main “Cosmos” series.

The Avalanches have dropped two new songs, “Wherever You Go” and “Reflecting Light,” from their upcoming as-yet-untitled album. Their third LP will be the follow-up to 2016’s Wildflower, which was their first album in 16 years.
The Jamie xx co-produced “Wherever You Go” features vocals from Neneh Cherry and Clypso and piano from Mick Jones. It also samples The Voyager Golden Record, the 12-inch gold-plated copper disk launched into space in 1977, which houses sounds and images that were chosen “to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth,” per NASA.

Thanks to “Game of Thrones,” there’s no longer a gap in visual effects quality between high-end features and episodic TV, despite disparities in budgets and schedules. The HBO landmark fantasy-drama set the standard early in its run, winning seven Emmys for bone-crunching battles and medieval world building, and the industry stepped up and has continued raising the bar ever since.

We live in a world beset by major problems: the coronavirus pandemic, systemic racism and, as if those weren’t troubling enough, the threat of climate change. But Emmy-winning producer, director and author Ann Druyan maintains optimism about human potential. You might say she takes a cosmic view.
“What gives me hope is that our ancestors had their backs to the wall on countless occasions…and they suffered tremendous hardships and managed to endure and even to flourish,” Druyan tells Deadline. “This is true of our species…We have what it takes.”
She adds quickly that what she believes in is “evidence-based hope.”
“We have the means to get through these terrible troubles, but we have to get our act together,” Druyan insists. “And one of the ways, in my view, is to spread the knowledge of science and high technology to the widest possible public once again.”

One of the highlights of Nat Geo’s “Cosmos: Possible Worlds” was how stop-motion animation helped humanize the tragic career of pioneering Russian botanist/geneticist Nikolai Vavilov in Episode 4: “Vavilov.” Indeed, the way in which Josef Stalin politicized pseudo-science to debunk Vavilov’s revolutionary discoveries to end hunger (he starved to death in prison), serves as a timely reminder of how political propaganda continues to imperil scientific truth.
Showrunner Ann Druyan and executive producer Brannon Braga used lots of hand-drawn animation throughout the series as a visual change of pace, but wanted to give “Vavilov” a more distinctive look to help humanize the historical drama. And they were both admirers of stop-motion, especially the nuance and naturalism of Charlie Kaufman’s Oscar-nominated “Anomalisa,” which was co-directed by Duke Johnson and animated at Starburns Industries — so they approached Johnson to spearhead the episode.

“We’re not inventing a story where we need the most extreme version of what it is that meets our fears,” Cosmos: Possible Worlds host and astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson said of the vital role VFX plays in the National Geographic series. “We are just trying to portray actual known things that happen in the actual known universe.”
Tyson joined Possible Worlds executive producer Ann Druyan and visual effects supervisor Jeffrey A. Okun at Deadline’s Contenders Television virtual event.

Many credit Carl Sagan's unique vision of space exploration as the source behind the award-winning 1980 television series "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage," but the producer of Nat Geo's revival of the beloved show, "Cosmos: Possible Worlds" says Ann Druyan, Sagan's widow is the brains behind both shows. CineMovie sat down with "Cosmos" creator, writer, director and executive producer Druyan and her partner Brannon Braga to talk about the show's second season on Nat Geo and Sagan's legacy.

Cosmos has been around since 1980, and the optimistic tone of both the late Carl Sagan’s show and the current iteration hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson has been the hallmark of the series. In its effort to make science more accessible and more inspirational to the average viewer, Cosmos: Possible Worlds has taken us on powerful visual journeys through space and time, and much of the credit for the impact of the show’s message must go to writer and executive producer Ann Druyan and the always relatable host Neil deGrasse Tyson, who joined the Sci Fi Fidelity podcast before the March 9th premiere on Nat Geo.
Druyan spoke to us on release day for her new book based on the latest season of the series, also titled Cosmos: Possible Worlds, which serves as a sequel to the popular novel tie-in with the original series written by her late husband,...

It’s a precarious time for science documentaries. At the heart of programming designed to educate viewers of all kinds, there seems to be a fundamental choice to either extol the possibility that knowledge provides or to warn against the dangers of ignoring or misusing that knowledge. Following in the footsteps of the original Carl Sagan-hosted series from 1980 and the initial reboot in 2014, “Cosmos: Possible Worlds” is the latest return to a scientific odyssey that looks to meaningfully blend those ideas into a stepping stone to a bolder future.
This latest edition is hosted once again by perennial science ambassador (and Twitter stirrer) Neil deGrasse Tyson, who doubles as tour guide and fireside storyteller. As “Cosmos” reaches toward visions of theoretical habitats orbiting distant stars and zooms in down the molecular inner workings of Earthly organisms, deGrasse Tyson is the connective tissue lending his scientific bona fides to the pursuit.

When Cosmos: Possible Worlds returns to Nat Geo on Monday, March 9, it will be known as Cosmos season 3, and never were three seasons farther apart. But while Carl Sagan began the popular science show back in 1980 to explore the wonders of space and other areas of science, the 2014 and 2020 iterations hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson and executive produced by science writer and the late Sagan’s wife, Ann Druyan, only build on that formula rather than change it. The pair spoke to us about the new 13-episode season to come.

“The empire is accidental,” says Seth MacFarlane as he sits atop the sort of rarefied showbiz kingdom — television shows, movies, acting roles, musical albums, merchandise — that only a handful of entertainment industry titans such as George Lucas and Walt Disney have known.
MacFarlane, who is set to receive a star April 23 on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, says there was never a plan to build such a legacy, only to work on things that make him happy.
“I think you’ll be surprised by some of the ideas and the things that he’s excited about,” says Erica Huggins, the president of MacFarlane’s production company Fuzzy Door. She expects the company’s future to potentially include dramas, remakes, podcasts — plus content from other creators who excite her boss. “The best way to describe the kind of genius that Seth has is that he sees it in the full picture.

National Geographic Channel has completed its investigation into “Cosmos” and “StarTalk” host Neil deGrasse Tyson, and will move forward with both shows. The channel didn’t elaborate on its findings, however.

National Geographic Channel has pulled its long-running Neil deGrasse Tyson chat show “StarTalk” off the air, at least for now, following allegations of sexual misconduct against the famed astrophysicist. “StarTalk” will remain on hiatus as a Fox Networks Group investigation into the multiple claims continues.
“In order to allow the investigation to occur unimpeded we chose to hold new episodes of ‘Star Talk’ until it is complete,” a Nat Geo rep told Variety. “We expect that to happen in the next few weeks at which time we’ll make a final decision.”
“StarTalk” returned for its fifth season in November and had aired just three episodes, out of a 20-episode order, when new allegations against Tyson emerged. The website Patheos reported that two women had accused Tyson of inappropriate behavior: Bucknell University’s Dr. Katelyn N. In 1977 Nasa launched two golden records into deep space on the Voyager I and II probes. Those records carry sounds, images of our planet, and human brainwaves. They have left our solar system and are the the most distant man-made objects floating in space. The Voyager probes are basically a message in a bottle for alien life.
I’ve got a wonderful short film here for you to watch inspired by the Voyager probes called Scavenger. The film was directed by Raphael Rogers and this is the synopsis:
The film begins when a planetary scavenger in an advanced spacesuit comes across the Voyager I drifting in interstellar space. Reading the brainwaves at the end of the record connects him to a planet he’s never known... Earth.
I also included a Radiolab interview in which Ann Druyan explains what those brainwaves on the record contain. It’s actually pretty fascinated stuff.

Yes, there’s something a bit interesting about thee fact that 21st Century Fox, the company behind Fox News (home to plenty of climate change–denying hosts), is also behind the revival of the science-themed series “Cosmos.” Executive producer Seth MacFarlane couldn’t help but point that out during the San Diego Comic-Con panel on Saturday for “Cosmos: Possible Worlds.”
“There’s a certain irony,” MacFarlane said. “But hats off to them for it.” MacFarlane was vocal on social media recently in admitting that he was “embarrassed” to work for the company because of the propaganda that Fox News has been pushing. But, as MacFarlane noted, “I think the Disney thing is happening” — as, indeed, his deal and his series will soon be under separate ownership from Fox News as the Walt Disney Co. acquires 21st Century Fox’s production units and some networks.
