With an international premier at the Osaka Asian Film Festival 2024, Yi-tzu Lan's ‘The Horse' brings us an, at first glance, a strange story featuring a horse appearing out of nowhere.
The Horse is screening at Osaka Asian Film Festival
Jing, standing on the threshold of a room with a moving box in her hands, can't bring herself to enter. Instead, she starts packing up in the other rooms. However, the situation is overwhelming her and her attempts at starting the work lead her back to the door of the room. Memories linked to objects in that room keep her from moving on. But then, out of nowhere, a horse appears in the apartment and its behavior forces Jing to get her act together.
Strange as it may seem at first, the concept of ‘The Horse' is very recognizable. Moving house can already be an overwhelming undertaking in itself: struggling to put boxes together,...

Is This a Lasting Treasure?: Chen’s Sophomore Rom-Com a Sugary Sweet Endeavor
Arvin Chen, the Taiwanese-American director and screenwriter of Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? certainly has a penchant for flights of fancy, though his latest film has an inescapable streak of melancholic longing that sometimes lends it an engaging advantage over similarly formulated titles in this vein. Your attraction to fluffy escapades involving miscommunications in love and lust will most likely determine your reaction to the film, which, as its poppy title taken from an iconic ditty from the Shirelle’s indicates, will resolve itself in satisfactory fashion so you’re left with a warm, faded glow of enjoyment. Dipping into moments of magical realism, Chen channels a tradition of classical cinema that may have you recalling Jacques Tati or Jacques Demy, though it doesn’t quite reach a confectionary crescendo as those particular influences would suggest.

Here's a slight, likable charmer starring a slight, likable charmer, Richie Jen as Weichung, a clerk in an eyeglasses shop who is finally ready to admit that he prefers the company of men to that of his long-suffering wife, Feng, movingly played by the singer Mavis Fan.
Set in cramped Taipei apartments and the wider, freer streets and clubs its protagonist dreams of escaping to, Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? proves most affecting when its characters — two couples, both troubled — dream of standing up against the currents that have shoved them along through life.
Weichung flirts with a hunky flight attendant (Wong Ka-lok), dances with rare jubilance at a gay club, and, thinking of his crush, levitates off the street and right into the heavens in on...

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow? is a sweet and often silly ensemble comedy in the vein of Love Actually following two couples as they stand at the crossroads in their relationship. Weichung (Richie Jen) and Feng (Mavis Fan) are seemingly happily married. Weichung has just been promoted to manager of a local eyeglass store, and Feng does well enough in her job to remain employed, though her constant tardiness is a problem. Together, they have a son, and though he might lack a few social skills, he is a well-behaved kid. Feng's parents, however, are pushing Feng and Weichung to have another child so that their son will have a sibling and by their logic won't be such an odd introvert. What Feng's parents don't know is that Weichung is gay and deeply in denial about his true feelings.

After a shakey start, writer-directors Alan Mak and Felix Chong have finally hit their stride in the last couple of years, with The Lost Bladesman and Overheard 2 both proving to be accomplished and entertaining thrillers in their respective genres. Here's hoping that this new run of good form continues in their new film. The Silent War (formerly Windseeker), stars Tony Leung Chiu Wai as a blind man recruited by the Chinese authorities in the 1950s to aid them in a secret mission thanks to his unnaturally strong sense of hearing. The film also stars Zhou Xun and Mavis Fan, and was adapted from the novel by Mai Jia, who also wrote the source material for 2009's gripping spy thriller, The Message. The Silent War is due...

Everyone needs more promotional material in their lives, especially when they’re hyper-stylish character posters. All six of ‘em are embedded below. They’re not bad, as these sort of things go, though I think I prefer the first batch over these. If you missed them, you can always click here to be magically transported to the article in question. “The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”, apparently, is a remake of Hark’s own film. Weird. This version stars Jet Li, Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Kwai Lun-Mei, Li Yuchun, and Mavis Fan. The flick opens in China in December. Unfortunately, the rest of us will have to wait. Darn it. I like swanky posters. I really do. So yes, I love these three character posters for Tsui Hark’s upcoming “The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate”. They are, in a word, swanky. A remake of Hark’s own film, the new and minty “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” is set during the Ming Dynasty, and follows one those powerful eunuchs who is violently crushing revolts and establishing a reign of terror across China. With his troops on hand, the eunuch proceeds toward the titular Dragon Gate with the idea of terminating the rest of those pesky rebels, but finds instead plenty of flying swords awaiting him. That’ll teach the eunuch. Starring Jet Li, Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Kwai Lun-Mei, Li Yuchun, and Mavis Fan. Hong Kong and China gets the film first in December. Thanks to Qing for the heads up. Time for some quick, morning wuxia action. The film is a remake of King Hu's Dragon Gate Inn (1966) and Raymond Lee's New Dragon Gate Inn (1992) and was shot in 3D. There are some very interesting shots in this, I thought it was worth featuring today. Check out that final scene with the huge sand tornadoes. Not exactly sure what's going on, but it looks cool! The latest trailer for director Tsui Hark’s upcoming martial arts epic “Flying Swords of Dragon Gate” looks absolutely fantastic. From a visual standpoint, the film is stunning, and I’m anxious to see what sort of kung fu madness Jet Li and his “Once Upon a Time” collaborator have cooked up. To borrow a quote from the immortal Keanu Reeves: “Whoa”. The film, which also stars Chen Kun, Zhou Xun, Louis Fan Siu-wong, Kwai Lun-mei, Mavis Fan, and Li Yu-chun, opens in China this December. Of course, the collaboration between Tsui and Jet Li, the first since their Once Upon A Time In China films, is also a great reason for the anticipation of this film.
