Fans of Michael Emerson‘s turns on Person of Interest, Lost and/or The Practice may get a hint — but only a hint — of his previous TV work when he arrives to make mayhem on The CW’s Arrow this fall.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.
It used to be we worried about the threat of artificial intelligence in movies like Colossus: The Forbin Project or “The Ultimate Computer” episode of Star Trek. Today, though, artificial intelligence is here thanks to Siri and Cortanna and their cousins. We talk to our phones and they answer back and these bots are growing increasingly sophisticated. As a result, what seemed ahead of its time a mere give years ago is looking increasingly prescient.
CBS’ Person of Interest arrived on September 22, 2011 and came with a fine pedigree having been created by Jonathan Nolan with J.J. Abrams on board as Executive Producer. It starred Michael Emerson, hot off Lost, Jim Caviezel, a pre-Empire Taraji P. Henson, and Kevin Chapman. It received near universal acclaim...

This week, CBS began the twice-weekly airing of the final 13 episodes of Person of Interest. The series is dark, compelling, and addresses many of the privacy and cyber-terrorism issues we’re wrestling with in our world. In the age of Peak TV, the quest for the instantly perfect can be the enemy of the eventually good. Once upon a time, the decision to commit to a TV show had as much to do with what it might become as what it was at the moment. Rare is the show that's a Hall of Famer right out of the box, so there's always been guesswork involved: Do I like this premise? These characters? Do the parts I enjoy seem likely to stay while the parts I don't disappear? What's the best possible version of this show, and what are the chances it actually becomes that? In those days, a patient viewer might have endured the early growing pains of shows like Seinfeld, Buffy, Parks and Recreation, or even Breaking Bad, and in time been rewarded by those shows transforming their potential energy into the actual, kinetic kind.

Irish short film "Love is a Sting" has a chance of Oscars® glory, after being selected as the Grand Prix Irish short film winner at the Awards Ceremony of the 60th Cork Film Festival, principally funded by the Arts Council.
Vincent Gallagher’s film will go forward to the Academy Awards® longlist to be considered next for the 89th Academy Awards in the Live Action Short Film category. The Cork Film Festival achieved the status of Academy Award® Qualifying Festival last year.
The film follows struggling writer Harold Finch, played by Séan T. Ó Meallaigh, who has an unexpected house guest in the form of Anabel – a hyper-intelligent mosquito who has literally been the fly on the wall throughout history. She is determined to communicate to Harold even if it kills her.
The €1,500 euro prize from RtÉ Cork was presented at the Triskel Christchurch by Bill Malone, Channel Controller of RtÉ2. The short will also be screened on RtÉ2 as part of the prize. RtÉ was the Festival’s new Principal Partner this year.
The 60th edition of the Cork Film Festival has drawn to a close after ten event-packed days which drew crowds from home and abroad.
Speaking at the Awards Ceremony, the Festival’s Creative Director James Mullighan said “'Love is a Sting' is an extraordinary film which we were proud to show at the Festival and we wish it every success on the long road to the Oscars®. This year’s Short Film program was unprecedented in both quality and quantity and we look forward to showcasing even more Irish talent at next year’s Festival.”
He continued: “There has been a fantastic response to the special program created to celebrate the 60th edition of the Festival. Audiences were up by more than 25%. We had a sell-out night at the Cork Opera House for the Irish premiere of Steve Jobs. We were delighted that some niche events also enjoyed sell-out success. The beautiful 'Hand Gestures' documentary at the National Sculpture Factory as well as 'Tangerine' - entirely shot on an i-phone – were two of the ten events that packed out their venues.
Demand for some of the sell-out films was so high that we arranged second screenings during the week. 'Tangerine' along with the wonderful documentaries 'Older Than Ireland' and 'My Love, Don’t Cross That River,' and the German feature 'Victoria,' each played twice to enthusiastic houses.”
A highlight of the week was the Rory Gallagher documentary 'What’s Going On: Taste Live at the Isle of Wight Festival,' which drew a huge house and a standing ovation at the Cork Opera House for the entertaining and moving Q&A session with Rory’s brother Dónal Gallagher and Hot Press founder Niall Stokes.
Other prize winners announced at the closing ceremony included "Listen." The Finland/Denmark-made short film was chosen as the winner of the Grand Prix International and was on the Oscars ®longlist this year. "Listen" takes place in a Copenhagen police station where a woman wearing a burqa is filing a complaint for domestic violence but her translator is unwilling to report her story.
The Irish Jury also selected Ciarán Dooley’s "The Great Wide Open" as the winner of the Cork Short Film award. The ten minute film warmed up the packed Closing Night Gala audience, who came in droves to watch Todd Haynes’s acclaimed drama "Carol."
The Us feature "Tangerine" won the €1,500 prize for best feature film; Gradam Spiorad na Féile / Spirit of the Festival Award. The jury this year was chaired by Irish filmmaker Gerard Stembridge.
Sean Baker’s feature is a twisted, high-energy Christmas tale, which casts an unflinching and comical eye on L.A’s sex industry and trans community.
UK / Ukranian documentary "The Russian Woodpecker" was selected as the winner of the inaugural Gradam na Féile do Scannáin Faisnéise / Award for Cinematic Documentary. Described as an original and terrifying look at the legacy of the Soviet Union, it was directed by Chad Gracia. This new award, which carries a €1,000 prize, was chosen by a jury chaired by Claire Aguilar, Sheffield DocFest’s Director of Programming and Industry Engagement.
The Festival also inaugurated two new music video awards this year. The Irish Music Video Award went to Bob Gallagher for Girl Band’s "Paul" whilst the International Music Video Award went to Eric Teidt for Simon Fagan’s "Lost to the Deep."
Jonas Carpignano’s acclaimed "Mediterranea" - a gripping and humanizing film about the refugee crisis - was chosen as the Cork nomination to the European Parliament’s Lux Film Prize.
Romanian feature film "Aferim!" – Radu Jude’s Berlin Film Festival’s Silver Bear winner - won the Youth Jury Award. Naomi Kawase’s drama "An" - about a 75 year old Japanese woman who starts work as an assistant in a pastry kiosk - was selected as the winner of the Audience Award, presented by the River Lee Hotel. "An" was screened as part of one of several new food-themed events, the sell-out Fab Food Trail.

"Person of Interest" is an unsung hero -- the CBS sci-fi drama reigns among shows like "Friday Night Lights" and "Deadwood" as critically acclaimed, but criminally underseen television treasures. Thankfully, this fall it's coming to Netflix and to Wgn America as part of the "Prime Crime" lineup at the end of the month, which means that you should all really do yourselves a favor and enter Jonathan Nolan's rich, comic book-like world of heroes, villains and a highly trained, highly adorable Belgian Malinois named Bear. One of the hallmarks of the modern era of television is an increased critical focus on the visual aspect of the medium. For years, when a film critic said a movie “looked like television,” they meant it as an insult. That statement implied that the film in question was shot in an entirely functional fashion, with a lack of creativity involved in the camerawork and shot choices. That stigma has dissolved over the last two decades, with the onset of the much-lauded golden age of television. Today, directors of photography like Michael Slovis and Chris Manley, best known for their work on Breaking Bad and Mad Men respectively, are doing work that rivals that of Hollywood’s top cinematographers. You can see the impact in the increased fluidity of the television and film spheres. Breaking Bad was able to bring successful movie director Rian Johnson over to TV, and Game of Thrones...

Being a billionaire does not automatically create a fashionable man. Warren Buffett and Bill Gates could easily afford to keep designers, tailors and stylists on the payroll. Yet neither man looks markedly different from men whose annual incomes are what they earn hourly.
Style cannot be bought. Still if one happens to have an innate sense of fashion and is a billionaire, then he can become the pinnacle of style - witness Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) of CBS' Tuesday drama "Person of Interest."
Although such superlative statements are tinder for arguments, it's fair to say that Finch is the most dapper character on television. That is thanks to Gary Jones, the show's costume designer, who quickly volunteers he arrived after some of the look was set.
"Finch's storyline involves a character who is, in fact, no longer on the show," Jones tells Zap2it. "And so at one point, he...

If you haven't managed to catch Jim Caviezel's fast-paced action drama yet, Digital Spy has selected five reasons you should tune in or binge on its first season.
1. Jim Caviezel kicks ass
While Kiefer Sutherland may be returning in 24: Live Another Day, there had been a Jack Bauer-shaped hole in the TV tough guys world. This was soon filled by Caviezel, who may surprise you at how awesomely hard he is as John Reese, a former CIA officer who is recruited by a billionaire tech wiz to prevent violent crimes in New York. Caviezel plays it stoic throughout, and is perfect in the role of someone who is damaged but wants to remain on the side of good.

"Person of Interest" marked its Season 3 fall finale with the return of Vigilance and the long-anticipated reveal of Control. Following the death of Carter and defeat of Hr, the show reminded its central characters that they can't ignore the evils in the world just because they're burnt out on crime fighting.
It doesn't take long for old enemies to come calling in episode 11, "Lethe," even though Finch is hesitant to accepting new numbers from the Machine. The person revealed is his old friend from his MIT days, Arthur Claypool, who happens to have drawn the attention of both Vigilance and the government. There's no better time for Control to finally reveal herself (as previously announced guest star Camryn Manheim) than in the aftermath of Hr's takedown.
Unfortunately for Harold, he discovers too late that Arthur, who is suffering from memory loss after a tumor affected his mind, also created a machine similar to his own.

With Almost Human arriving soon, Rob compares the merits of ten Jj Abrams-produced TV shows, from Lost, to Alias, Revolution, and more...
Warning: contains spoilers for Revolution, and Lost.
Most would agree, Jj Abrams has had a successful career which has gone from strength to strength. Undoubtedly, Star Wars now offers an opportunity for him to reach a creative zenith, but represents also his largest risk. His stylistic choices may not be to everyone’s tastes and he himself admits that there are elements over which he has an obsession (lens flares & secrecy) but these are still a matter of personal taste (I’m ambivalent over the former, and truly appreciate the latter). All that aside, outside his burgeoning film directing career, as an executive producer Abrams has been responsible for an incredible amount of television in a very small space of time.

Michael Emerson is no stranger to being on a successful show with a complicated plot, having spent five seasons as creepy Others leader Ben Linus on Lost. On Person of Interest, Emerson applies his signature air of mystery — along with a limp — to play genius tech billionaire Harold Finch. But unlike Ben, Finch is the hero, using his skills and the Machine, the computer system he built that predicts future crimes, to track down villains with former CIA agent John Reese (Jim Caviezel).
And as the drama continues its third season, Finch is having trouble with the Machine as it...

(Cbr) After appearing at the "Person of Interest" panel at New York Comic Con, stars Jim Caviezel, Kevin Chapman, Taraji P. Henson, Amy Acker and Sarah Shahi joined Executive Producer and showrunner Greg Plageman to talk with reporters about the hit CBS crime drama. The thriller follows ex-cia agent John Reese (Caviezel) and billionaire genius Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) as they use a computer system — referred to as “the Machine” — that can predict violent acts to secretly try to stop the crimes before they happen. The third season sees a new status quo, and a move to a new...

This season, CBS has moved Person of Interest to Tuesday nights. Will the ratings fall off as a result or will they grow because of a stronger lead-in? Let's wait and see.
On Person of Interest, former CIA officer John Reese (Jim Caviezel) and billionaire Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) continue to work together to prevent violent crimes in the Big Apple. Taraji P. Henson, Kevin Chapman, Sarah Shahi, and Amy Acker round out the cast.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- usually the next day, around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see the latest.

Even after seasons of watching "Person of Interest," there's something incredibly validating about seeing yet another person realize that the Machine is actually real. In the case of tonight's episode, "Lady Killer," it's the psychiatrist who Root was dealing with in the Season 3 premiere that finally got to see the Machine at work.
After being absent in episode 2, "Nothing To Hide," Root broke free from the mental institution in "Lady Killer" just like she had promised she would. If there was any doubt that the Machine actually is aiding Amy Acker's character, then that was cleared up in tonight's episode. The Machine really does have a plan that Root is carrying out on its behalf, and Finch has been cled into that.
There was some serious panic in Harold Finch's face when he realized that Root escaped, but the real question is whether or not he realized that...

Person of Interest, Season 3, Episode 1: “Liberty”
Written by Greg Plageman and Denise The
Directed by Chris Fisher
Person of Interest airs at 10 P.M. Et on CBS
A brief recap on the first two seasons: there exists a machine made my the government that monitors the activities of everyone in the country (and abroad) for the purpose of predicting and preventing terrorist attacks. As a byproduct, “The Machine” also tracks the more mundane activities, i.e. premeditated murders. “The Machine” gives out a person’s number who will either be murdered or will be murdering someone else. Using “The Machine” to prevent these murders, former CIA operative John Reese (Jim Caviziel) and Harold Finch (Lost‘s Harold Finch), creator of “The Machine”, work to prevent these murders with the assistance of New York City Detectives Carter (Tarji P. The Machine is on the move, but the big question as CBS’ Person of Interest returns tonight at 10/9c (new time slot alert!) is not where it’s gone to but what it’s up to. Plus, Season 3 promises a richer cast of players, now that rascally Root and steely Shaw are keepers. Executive producer Greg Plageman shared with TVLine a look at what’s newas the well-watched drama returns.

"Person of Interest" is getting a big dose of girl power in Season 3. Recurring actresses Sarah Shahi and Amy Acker were both upped to series regulars for the upcoming season, which should make for some interesting complications for main characters Harold Finch and John Reese.
"She has a big bada** presence for sure," Shahi tells Zap2it of her character Samantha Shaw in Season 3. "I know that when they wanted to bring Shaw into the team, they wanted to do it in a very slow, very thought out way. They didn't want her to join too quickly. They wanted the audience to work for it a little bit to be able to see that. In terms of how that relationship is going to grow, other than the fact that it is going to grow, there's really not that much else...

News came that Amy Acker had been upped to a series regular on "Person of Interest" only moments before the show's San Diego Comic-Con press interviews began, so Zap2it was among the first to congratulate the recurring actress on her upgraded status in Season 3. Acker says she's not sure how her character Root's role could change in the coming season now that she is around full-time, but she is "really excited to find out."
"They really keep us in the dark, but I was saying I feel like my character's had such a crazy journey already," Acker says. "Every episode I get, it seems like they are building upon the character, changing it, and the great thing about working in genre television is that you really could go in so many different directions."
Could that mean that Root and Michael Emerson's Harold Finch could potentially become allies as...

Proving that Comic-Con and the people behind the production of CBS‘s Person of Interest – specifically, Warner Bros. Bringing romance to the drama series Person Of Interest, Carrie Preston and her real life husband Michael Emerson are lovebirds both on screen and off. In fact, many would be surprised to find out that it was not Michael’s idea to bring Carrie onto the show; instead it was the producers who broached the idea of bringing Carrie in to portray Harold Finch’s love interest. Naturally, both Carrie and Michael were delighted with this proposal; and so the epic love-story of Harold and Grace was brought to life – with the aid of The Machine, who clearly had matchmaking on the brain. In a recent exclusive interview, Carrie shared what it is like working with her illustrious husband on Person Of Interest, as well as teasing a bit about the upcoming season of True Blood.

The Machine has rebooted, the call has gone out - and it looks like one person is going to have a "24-hour ticket to mayhem." Will it be Reese, Root, Finch or someone else?
I recently spoke with Person of Interest series creator Jonathan Nolan, along with executive producer Greg Plageman, about the end game on Person of Interest Season 2, its recurring characters, and what's in store for the finale, "God Mode."
Read on for excerpts from our Q&A…

Did you always know that the Machine shutdown and hard reset was the game plan to close out Person of Interest Season 2?
Nolan: Yeah, we've been building towards this for a long time. Because this season has spent a little more time answering questions about Harold Finch that for us it dovetailed very nicely with this idea that there's a more aggressive evolution than last season taking place here with the Machine.

In the first season finale last year, we found out that The Machine was more than just a computer spitting out numbers – it was a form of artificial intelligence. We also were introduced to the mysterious person known as Root (Amy Acker), who had the audacity to kidnap Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) right out from under John Reese’s (Jim Caviezel) nose. In addition, as this second season has demonstrated, Root is not someone to underestimate. She is ruthless, a super genius, and she will do anything to get her hands on The Machine. But she doesn’t want to possess or control The Machine, she wants to set it free. Free to do what? That is the scary question. In a recent exclusive interview, creators and executive producers Jonah Nolan and Greg Plageman candidly shared who now has control of The Machine and whose life may be sacrificed in protecting The Machine.

Person of Interest ought to be good. It ought to be tight, compelling television that defies you not to tune in again. It is not.
The roster of talent involved is impressive with Batman alum Jonathan Nolan as writer/creator, Jj Abrams executive producing and Jim Caviezel taking the lead. The plot is a little preposterous but a small sprinkle of silly seems practically compulsory in the primetime TV we enjoy today. Yet Person of Interest fails entirely to captivate – its title is a misnomer – over two dozen episodes I don’t recall seeing anyone who interested me at all.
John Reese (Jim Caviezel) is a former CIA agent who vanished, presumed dead, after he buckled under the burden of professional and person trauma. The loss of ex-girlfriend Jessica is a burden he carries to this day and his reclusive life the self-imposed punishment. Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) is a...

New York — Michael Emerson has played a serial killer, a mysterious, villainous Island leader and currently stars as a billionaire computer genius on "Person of Interest." But he says playing the romantic interest for his real life wife has been his most unsettling role.
Emerson plays the off-beat Harold Finch in "Person of Interest," which airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. Eastern. His wife Carrie Preston has a recurring role as Finch's former fiance, who believes he is dead.
The couple has acted together in a few independent films and Preston even played Emerson's mother in an episode of ABC's "Lost," but this was their first romantic pairing. This season even showed the characters' first kiss.

Prior to the 2012 Christmas holiday break, Person Of Interest left fans hanging with John Reese (Jim Caviezel) caught the FBI’s net after a failed bank robbery. With Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) and Detectives Fusco (Kevin Chapman) and Carter (Taraji Henson) hovering nearby, there could be a last minute rescue of Reese from the FBI’s clutches. But as learned in a recent press conference call with executive producers Jonah Nolan and Greg Plageman, Reese may have to spend a little time behind bars before he can come to anyone else’s rescue again.
When the show returns, how much time will have passed? Will things pick up right where they left off, or will some time have gone by?

Top 10 lists are tricky things. It can be absurdly hard to narrow down anything to a select group of ten. It’s like being asked to choose your favorite child and you just want to wail, “But I love all of them!” This is particularly true in television. Each year I commit to nearly 100 television shows that air throughout the twelve-month period. Thus, to pare down to the few that were truly outstanding, it can be exceptionally difficult. But there are always a deserving few who manage to do the impossible: sustaining a high caliber of performance and be equally captivating entertainment. As a caveat, there will always be better shows, but sometimes those shows just didn’t manage to be as consistently entertaining. Addictiveness plays a large part of what makes television shows successful. It is a quality that is rare and elusive and can be dependent upon the personal tastes of the viewer.

It is that time of year again where we take a day to celebrate all that we are thankful for in our lives – our health, our family, our friends, our jobs, and everything that brings a bit of happiness into our lives. For those of us who enjoy television, this is a quick look at a few of the TV shows that have brightened our days and nights in 2012:
Doctor Who
A favorite since childhood, it seems like each year this show makes me believe in the impossible. For surely time-travel does exist and there is a wonderful man called The Doctor inviting the lucky few to travel with him in his extraordinary blue box. Doctor Who is one of those television series that makes you feel richer for watching it. It is clever, whimsical, funny, terrifying and heart-warming all wrapped together. It surpasses itself with each passing season,...

Harold Finch (Michael Emerson) and John Reese (Jim Caviezel) after they save another life thanks to the Machine.
This week, Person of Interest presented an interesting scenario. What happens when the man who the Machine declares the next number is a victim not a perpetrator, but he's also a dangerous mob enforcer traveling with a complete innocent? It put John and Harold at odds with one another as John argued that Riley Cavanaugh (Jonathan Tucker) may be a killer but so was he at one point. While Finch gets offended by the notion of letting Riley's lover, Annie, be put into harm's way at all even going so far as to quote his recent captor by stating that some people are just 'bad code'.
Frankly, the story itself wasn't the strongest this week as the young lovers tried to get out of town before Riley's former boss, George Massey, could get them both killed.

After last week's episode which put in a pin in the Root storyline for now, and brought Harold Finch home it's back to business as (almost) usual for John Reese. This time his charge is the young entitled daughter of a Brazilian diplomat with big political ambitions. Meanwhile, Fusco hands over what he obtained regarding the Alicia Corwin case to Detective Carter and she has a surprising reunion with an adversary from season one. We also got a flashy new credits sequence which now includes all four of our leads in it so let's dive into 'Masquerade'.
The cover charge is your life
Sophia Campos is rich, entitled, and a bit of a brat but she's the machine's next number so it's up to Reese to keep her safe. This week, that means Reese goes undercover as her new bodyguard as he tries to figure out if she's the latest...
