MTV will take a break from handing out golden buckets of popcorn this Sunday to honor the life of late actor Paul Walker during the channel's annual Movie Awards.
Walker, who died in a single-car crash last November at the age of 40, was a fixture at the ceremony over the past decade thanks to this starring role in the "Fast and Furious" franchise, and his contributions to that series and other films will be remembered by the network, MTV said in a statement.
"Paul Walker was a role model for the MTV audience since the very beginning of his too-short career," said MTV president Stephen Friedman. "Our audience grew up with him, from 'Varsity Blues' to the 'Furious' franchise. He was a movie star but one that they could relate to. ... Amid the presentations for Best Shirtless Performance and Conan O'Brien's comic mugging, moments of earnestness are likely to be few at this week's MTV Movie Awards -- which is as it has always been. But the levity will be suspended for at least a couple of minutes, as organizers have announced that the show will feature a tribute to the late "Fast & Furious" star Paul Walker, nearly five months after the 40-year-old actor died in a car crash. Walker is also posthumously nominated (with Vin Diesel, of course) this year for Best Onscreen Duo in "Furious 6" -- though the La Times confirms that the presentation of that award will stand separate from the tribute, which will take the form of a clip reel, preceded by an onstage dedication from his "Furious" co-star (and onscreen wife) Jordana Brewster. Walker, of course, is far from the only big-name star to...

Even if it is just a ploy to shoehorn another pandering award to a popular young star, I kind of dig the MTV's Trailblazer Award as a general concept. It's kind of the opposite of a lifetime achievement honor, reserved for actors or actresses of a young age whose work paves the way for others in the industry. And the first two annual recipients were women, which is nice (Emma Stone in 2012 and Emma Watson in 2013). This year the honor is going to a dude for the first time: Channing Tatum. Tatume is "the quintessential leading man for the MTV audience," MTV President Stephen Friedman said. "He proves that an action hero can have both a quick wit and a large heart. Whether he's baring his soul in 'The Vow,' his chest in 'Magic Mike,' or his humor in '21 Jump Street,' Channing proves that by committing everything,...

Well, if anyone deserves an award from MTV for a career that bridges the channel's generations, it's actor, producer, former underwear model and onetime Funky Bunch leader Mark Wahlberg. The 42-year-old star will be honored at the MTV Movie Awards next month with the MTV Generation Award -- the irreverent ceremony's slightly more youthful answer to a career achievement award. MTV head honcho Stephen Friedman explained the selection: “Mark Wahlberg is the definition of a modern day Renaissance Man: from Dirk Diggler to 'The Departed,' 'The Basketball Diaries' to 'Ted,’ ‘Entourage’ to 'The Fighter,’ in front of the camera and behind – he's done it all and he's always memorable. Mark has captivated the MTV audience for over 20 years, and for this rare feat, we're proud to recognize him with this year's Generation Award.” (No mention of the fact that "Good Vibrations" is still a tune,...

Lisa Sherman, who has run the day-to-day-operations at Logo since its 2005 launch, is leaving the company as the Viacom network will be aligned with MTV. This marks an end of an era for Logo, started by then-president Brian Graden with Sherman as his top lieutenant. She took the reins of the network in 2008 when she was named Evp and general manager. The move to put Logo under the MTV umbrella, reporting to MTV President Stephen Friedman, will likely accelerate the transformation of Logo from a network strictly focused on the Lgbt community one that caters to wider audience, which started last year. Over the years, Logo tried different types of programming, including scripted series and a daily talk show, but it always has been best known for its signature unscripted show, RuPaul’s Drag Race. Here is the memo about Sherman’s departure sent internally by Van Toffler, President of...

MTV’s top unscripted executive, Evp of Programming and Head of Production Chris Linn, is headed to Turner where he will take the reins of truTV as president and head of programming. He replaces Marc Juris, who announced his departure at the beginning of the month. Along with David Janollari, Linn took over MTV when president of programming Tony Disanto left at the beginning of 2011, with Linn focused on unscripted and Janollari on scripted programming. Janollari departed when Susanne Daniels was named MTV president of programming in November, with Linn reporting to Daniels, Van Toffler and Stephen Friedman. He had been eying new opportunities for the past several months as Daniels had been exploring bringing in a new head of unscripted the way she installed Mina Lefevre on the scripted side. After an overture with a British executive, Daniels ultimately promoted within the company, with Lauren Dolgen named Head of...
