Part of our on-going series Notebook Soundtrack Mixes.Forever on the edge of one's seat, giallo is the provider of all the glamorous and hallucinatory emotions. The film genre and its musical sister is somewhat a crown jewel when it comes to detailed niches, sub-genres, and die hard fans. Original LP records from the giallo genre can cost a hefty sum and the blossoming vinyl reissuing industry (an exciting addition over recent decades) proves how enduring the genre and its sub-genres are. This giallo bonanza comes in just shy of two hours and you will find both influential and cherished moments and secluded moments on the sidelines. That, for me, showcases its textures and ultimately what a fun, trippy genre it is. The work of the masters is in full swing, beloved composers such as Bruno Nicolai, Nora Orlandi, Riz Ortolani, and Goblin all have turns. And of course, the...

A couple of weeks ago, I spent a few days immersed in Netflix’s new original series, Stranger Things. As someone who grew up in the 1980s and ‘90s, the show proved a wonderful exercise in nostalgia; a delightful amalgam of the wide-eyed Spielbergian ingenuousness and nightmarescapes of Stephen King that so informed my youth. From the moment the opening credits began I was hooked and a large part of this had to do with the show’s opening theme music. Composed by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, members of the Austin-based electronic outfit Survive, the show’s theme immediately brings us into the curious world of Stranger Things. Analog synthesizer motifs creep in and out of the mix, pulsating ominously, intoning dread. A percussive heartbeat simmers underneath, propelling us forward into awaiting disaster and, paradoxically, backward to another time and place. When combined with the show’s titles—its...

Today being international jazz day, there will be much celebrating of the greatness of its history. I’ve done that in the past; it is a great history. But it is not all back in historical times; jazz lives, and evolves, and continues to be great. Yet how many lists of the greatest jazz albums include anything from the current century?
That they do not is no indictment of them; only sixteen percent of the years when recorded jazz has existed (not counting the present year yet) are in the twenty-first century, after all, and some prefer to bestow the label of greatness after more perspective has been achieved than sixteen (or fewer, for newer releases) years.
Nonetheless, if people are to respect jazz as a living art form, a look back at the best of its more recent releases seems worthwhile. Here’s one man’s “baker’s dozen...

If you were asked to recommend a good Giallo film, chances are you’d look to one of Dario Argento’s films as a good start. Arrow’s release of the 4k remaster of Deep Red is a new box set that is not only one of the best Giallos from the director, but also one of Arrow Video’s best releases in recent months.
When Marcus Daly (David Hemmings) witnesses the murder of one of his neighbours as he stands in the street below, he rushes to her aid. Unable to save the woman he looks for clues as to who the murderer is. The only thing he can remember is a painting that seems to be missing from the woman’s apartment.

My first foray into Italian horror was Lucio Fulci’s Zombie (1980), seen as a delightfully repulsed 10 year old. However, Dario Argento’s Deep Red (Profondo Rosso if you’re Italian) was the first Italian horror film that actually intrigued me; same age, but very different feelings. The repulsion was there, that base fear, but set within a framework of beautifully rendered images. I didn’t know much about art, but it felt like that’s what I was watching.
Released in March of 1975, Deep Red was the latest thriller from Argento in the giallo style; an Italian term which has generally become known to mean a gruesome, lurid detective story; so called due to the fact that the original Italian pulp novels a lot of these stories pay homage to were written on yellow, or giallo, paper. Argento was already making a name for himself worldwide with previous efforts in...

When I was putting together my best jazz albums of 2012 article, Ivo Perelman's productive year had him dominating the list, so I made him artist of the year and then compiled a separate top ten of new recordings and a top five of older recordings mostly given their first releases this year. There were still plenty of excellent jazz albums to choose from. Jazz isn't dead, it just has to live on a fixed income.
Artist of the Year: Ivo Perelman
Brazilian tenor saxophonist Ivo Perelman's album The Hour of the Star was #18 on my Best New Jazz of 2011 list. He was just warming up for an amazing 2012 in which Leo Records released six -- Six!!! -- Perelman CDs. All of them are excellent (and none of them, alas, are on iTunes yet).

After being admitted into a psychiatric hospital, the man flashes back to his nightmarish encounter with a backwoods family whose dynasty holds a centuries-old curse. What follows is a night of unrelenting horror.

New York's Museum of Arts and Design is currently in the middle of a retrospective, much on film, of the family Argento titled Argento: Il Cinema Nel Sangue (Cinema in the Blood). I thought I'd use that series as an excuse to reanimate a geometry of images that've been sitting in the our Notebook crypt of the unpublished for some time, just waiting for such a chance to burst, crystalline and perilous, upon the site.
All are from Dario Argento's Deep Red (1975), which screens Thursday, April 26; featuring David Hemmings; production design by Giuseppe Bassan; cinematography by Luigi Kuveiller.

Poor David Hemmings. First, Michelangelo Antonioni puts him through the wringer in the ultra stylish giallo, Blow Up (1966), and then Dario Argento gets the idea to cast him in a reworking of Blow Up in 1975, with Deep Red. This guy can’t go anywhere without being thrown into a murder mystery, and thus risking his life at every turn.
In Deep Red, Hemmings plays Marcus Daily, a British pianist working in Italy. One night he witnesses the murder of his neighbor Helga (Macha Meril), a renowned psychic, in their apartment building. While being interrogated by the police he meets Gianna Brezzi (Daria Nicolodi), a plucky journalist who quickly ropes Marcus into investigating the murder with her.
Daria Nicolodi and David Hemmings’ relationship is reminiscent of a 1940’s comedy starring Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn. In a memorable sequence where the two are in Gianna’s car, she is driving, while...
