Last night's season debut of Two and a Half Men -- the first one without Charlie Sheen and with Ashton Kutcher -- drew huge numbers. Estimates come in at 27.7 million viewers, nearly double what last season's first episode drew.
Undoubtedly the ratings came from the summer-long slow-motion public battle between Sheen and Two and a Half Men creator Chuck Lorre and the interest in seeing how Lorre dealt with Sheen's departure. The answer: his character of Charlie Harper was killed off-screen by a subway train car.
His funeral featured cameos from several TV stars including Star Trek Voyager's Jeri Ryan, Missy Pyle and Martin Mull. Among the potential buyers of Charlie's beach-front home were Full House's John Stamos and Dharma and Greg's Jenna Elfman and Thomas Gibson.
So the first episode worked and drew in the spectators -- now comes the real test in the series' second week.
