A lawsuit filed by a Seal Team script coordinator and freelancer who claims he was denied a writing position because he’s a straight white guy has already struck a chord with fellow scribes.
Many took to X to express their frustration with freelance scribe Brian Beneker, who says in the complaint that he suffered by not being part of “the favored hiring groups; that is, they were nonwhite, LGBTQ, or female.” He also called out the “illegal policy” of diversity, equity and inclusion measures.
Beneker, who has worked on Seal Team since 2017 and before that was a script coordinator on Sons of Anarchy, claims in 2019 that he questioned current showrunner Spencer Hudnut over why previous showrunner John Glenn had hired a new male writer when Glenn claimed at the time that “there were already too many staff writers and there was no room for CBS to hire [Beneker].”

The Dei wars raging in Red State America have made their long-expected arrival in Hollywood. With support from one of Donald Trump’s closest aides, a Seal Team staffer has filed a discrimination lawsuit against CBS and Paramount Global claiming he was denied a writing position on the show because of being a straight white guy.
‘Defendants failed to hire or promote Mr. Beneker due to his race, sex, and heterosexuality,” the complaint from longtime Seal Team script coordinator and freelance scribe Brian Beneker reads. Beneker says in the complaint seeking a jury trial that he has suffered by not being part of “the favored hiring groups; that is, they were nonwhite, LGBTQ, or female,” and the “illegal policy” of increasingly attacked diversity, equity and inclusion measures.

Perhaps you’ve heard but it’s been a very Suits summer.
Despite airing its final episode in September 2019, USA Network’s legal procedural Suits has been the talk of the streaming world ever since its first eight seasons arrived to Netflix on June 17. All nine seasons have been streaming on Peacock for far longer but Netflix, as the biggest streaming service, tends to drive the most attention. Per Nielsen, Suits has already broken its own streaming record with 3.7 billion minutes viewed the first week of July and viewership intensity doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.
The potential reasons for Suits‘ surge in popularity are manyfold. While the dual WGA and Sga strikes shouldn’t have led to an extended pause in summer content in theory, some studios have juggled their schedules a bit to weather the storm for the fall season. Additionally, Suits‘ basic cable format...

Pilots for “The Hurt Unit,” “Public Defenders,” “Judgement” and “Keeping It Together” (which was formerly titled “Drop-Off”) are no longer moving forward at ABC.
The news comes amid the ongoing writers strike taking hold of Hollywood. The Writers Guild of America decided to strike on May 2 after failing to reach an agreement on issues like wages and protections against AI.
The medical procedural drama was ordered in December and starred Ben McKenzie. Per the official logline, the show is “a cutting-edge medical drama about a highly skilled team of trauma surgeons and nurses who race into the field to treat the patients who won’t make it to the hospital in time. When the sick and the injured can’t get to the ER, the Hurt Unit (Hospital Urgent Response Team) brings the ER to them.”
Matt Lopez and John Glenn co-wrote the pilot for “The Hurt Unit,” with both serving as executive producers.

ABC is passing on its pilots.
The network has passed on Anthony Anderson-fronted Public Defenders and Ellie Kemper-led Keeping It Together, which is a remake of British comedy Motherland, as well as dramas The Hurt Unit, starring Melissa George and Ben McKenzie, and Judgement starring Sex/Life’s Sarah Shahi.
ABC Signature is, however, planning to shop The Hurt Unit to other networks and platforms, while 20th Television will be shopping Public Defenders and Judgement.
The move comes as it still has decisions to make on series Home Economics and The Rookie: Feds as well as The Good Lawyer, which was a backdoor pilot spinoff of The Good Doctor.
Last month, ABC handed a series order to Drew Goddard’s pilot High Potential, starring Kaitlin Olson. The project, which is based on the popular French detective series Hip, was the clear front-runner all development season.

Godspeed John Glenn. Our American small town hero has passed away, and Discovery will salute his contributions to our history and to the world this Sunday. Glenn became the first American to orbit the Earth during the height of the space race. Geniuses seem to find their way, as did Glenn who was raised in small town America. Discovery’s airing of When We Left Earth: The Nasa Missions will truly underscore what a treasure we lost with Glenn’s passing. The episode includes interviews from Mercury and space shuttle astronauts and Glenn’s own account of his missions. In the Discovery tribute, there...read more...

“The Beatles were eight months away from releasing their first single, “Love Me Do,” when John Glenn rocketed into space on Feb. 20, 1962, to become the first American to orbit Earth.
The flight set Nasa on course to meet ever-more ambitious goals. Glenn’s three orbits in five hours was eclipsed on the next flight and each one afterward steadily pushed Americans further out from the cradle of Earth, ultimately leading to a series of landings on the moon from 1969 to 1972.
“The whole program shifted rapidly from, ‘Can we do this?’ to basic research,” Glenn told a packed press conference conducted among the displays and consoles that made up Cape Canaveral’s Mercury control center.” – Nasa

Various and sundry thoughts from the mind of Mindy this week:
The USS Enterprise (Cvn-65), the eighth U.S. Navy vessel to bear that name, was decommissioned this week after 50 years of service. The world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier made her maiden voyage on January 12, 1962 and her first mission was tracking and monitoring the first orbital flight of Project Mercury, with Lt. Col. John Glenn aboard the Friendship 7 capsule. In popular culture, the Enterprise was the home base of Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) in Top Gun, with the late director Tony Scott filming and incorporating flight deck operations into the film, and it was the flagship of the U.S. Navy fleet participating in The Hunt For Red October.
Then, of course, there is Star Trek – and did you know that Gene Roddenberry’s original starship name was the USS Yorktown? But the fame and status of...

Washington -- Baseball great Hank Aaron is a Barack Obama guy. Golf legend Jack Nicklaus is in Mitt Romney's camp.
From athletes and astronauts to singers and Hollywood stars, a growing line of celebrities is turning up at fancy dinners and rallies to build support and get out the vote for Obama or Romney, the president's Republican challenger.
Obama has entertainers like Bruce Springsteen, Katy Perry, George Clooney, Beyonce and Jay-z.
Romney's supporters include Clint Eastwood, musicians Kid Rock and Lee Greenwood and comedian Dennis Miller. Often the Democratic ticket attracts younger and glitzier stars.
Both campaigns have spent huge amounts of time and effort making sure their rallies feature opening acts that reinforce a campaign message, whether it's the economy, health care, veterans or some other issue.
Nicklaus, who now designs golf courses, teed up Romney at a campaign event near Columbus, Ohio.

Legendary musician Bob Dylan visited the White House on Tuesday to receive the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. Dylan released his first album in 1962, and his music had a considerable influence on the civil rights movement. Below, President Barack Obama awards Dylan the prestigious medal.
The president said he found Dylan's music transcendant, claiming it led to his "world opening up, because [Dylan] captured something about this country that was so vital."
Dylan was one of 13 to receive the Medal of Freedom on Tuesday, including former astronaut and Senator John Glenn, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former University of Tennessee women's basketball head coach Pat Summitt.
Correction: An earlier version of this story misspelled the name of basketball coach Pat Summitt.

Bob Dylan may have a better shot than ever at getting a Nobel Prize, now that President Obama has announced he will receive a Presidential Medal of Freedom.
The movement has been building for the past few years. Dylan has won 11 Grammys – including a Lifetime Achievement Award (in 1991) — an Oscar and a Pulitzer Prize. France even named Dylan a Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Art et des Lettres.

Recently, Virgin mogul Richard Branson unveiled the SpaceShipTwo, the world's first commercial space-plane. With three bodies, five hybrid rocket engines, and (apparently) zero room for spaces in its title, the SpaceShipTwo will carry passengers 70 miles above the earth and give them five minutes of weightlessness before returning them to earth $200,000 lighter. Flights start in 2010.
Virgin is getting into space tourism just as their only competitor, the Russian space agency RosCosmos, is getting out.
In fact, even Nasa is done with sending humans to space; they've grounded all their space shuttles and are asking astronauts to hitch their way to the International Space Station with the Russians until 2015, when their new space jitney is ready. (With American astronauts on board their Soyuz rockets, there's no room for civilian customers, the Russians say.)
That leaves the Virgin plane (its components diagrammed above) way out in front of an industry that a lot...
