New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features one random pick as well as four selections reflecting the month of May 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a self-loathing serial killer, a violinist’s murderous ghost, and a postmodern vamp flick.
Scream, Pretty Peggy (1973)
Pictured: Ted Bessell and Sian Barbara Allen in Scream, Pretty Peggy.
Directed by Gordon Hessler.
The TV-movie Scream, Pretty Peggy first aired as part of ABC Movie of the Week. Bette Davis plays the mother of a reclusive sculptor (Ted Bessell), and after the previous housekeeper goes missing, a local college student (Sian Barbara Allen) fills the position. Little does she know, though, the young employee’s predecessor was murdered — and the killer is still on the loose.

The near future. America is an irradiated wasteland with a single vast outpost stretching across the eastern seaboard: Mega City One. This massive urban dystopia has a population of over 400 million people, and each one of them is a potential perpetrator. With government and country now gone, a powerful and efficient hybrid of the police and judicial system has given birth to a group of new guardians of the law with the power to dispense instant justice and punishment. Trained from an early age to be unbreakable, incorruptible upholders of the law, The Judges are judge, jury and executioner. One of these judges, Judge Dredd, is called by the Chief Judge to assess a twenty-one year old rookie, and mutant (she’s a psychic), Cassandra Anderson, who wants...

Lionsgate is releasing Dredd, one of my favorite sci-fi action films of 2012, on 3D Blu-ray on January 8. Directed by Pete Travis the film stars Karl Urban, Lena Headey, Olivia Thirlby, Wood Harris, Warrick Grier, and Porteus Xandau Steenkamp. This is the second adaptation of the comic, with the first being the 1995 film starring Sylvester Stallone. Urban is great as Judge Dredd, and the film has all the perfect elements of a fun action film. Where it falls short is it's scope and the lack of a strong villain.
Dredd takes place in the radioactive wasteland of “Mega-City One,” an urban sprawl with people living on-top-of-one-another. Violence and crime are the norm, which has forced the creation of Judges that help fight crime. For those that do not know, a Judge is the combination of a cop and judge rolled into one. Instead of having to wait for a criminal to go to trial,...

More photos from Pete Travis‘ upcoming Dredd reboot have been outed by Lionsgate.
It stars Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey, Jason Cope, Langley Kirkwood, Kevon Kane, Joe Vaz, Warrick Grier, Scott Sparrow, and Luke Tyler.
In the world of ‘Dredd,’ a new drug called slo-mo is taking over the streets. As the name implies, the drug causes its users to experience the world around them at a fraction of the normal speed, which means that when Urban’s Judge Dredd starts violently cleaning up the streets, there’s actually a reason for everything to sloooow down other than just to look cool (although, let’s face it, that’s the ulterior motive). All of this promises the most slow motion filled film since ’300,’ which was also sold heavily on its style rather than a star-studded cast.
Dredd opens on September 21st, 2012.

Watch a behind-the-scenes featurette on the stunning slow-motion visual effects utilized in Lionsgate's Dredd 3D! I have to hand it to Karl Urban, the guy really nailed that Dredd expression, far-better than what Stallone did in the earlier version of Judge Dredd, which was also quite entertaining for that matter. This is a different animal, and far bloodier, that's for sure. This latest featurette joins the previous 60 second trailer for Dredd 3D which we added recently. Pete Travis directs the sci-fi actioner with a cast including Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Jason Cope, Joe Vaz, Rakie Ayola, Warrick Grier, Wood Harris, Domhall Gleeson and Luke Tyler among others.

Although I’m not sure anyone asked for it, another update to the source material, which spawned the 1995 Sylvester Stallone actioner Judge Dredd, is coming our way this fall and we’ve got the first footage today. Titled simply Dredd, Star Trek‘s Karl Urban is in the lead role, with indie staple Olivia Thirlby by his side. While Pete Travis seems to be directing with a bit more style here compared to his dud Vantage Point, it’s difficult to get excited for this one.
Thirlby looks way out of her element and while I shouldn’t be expecting anything stellar from this reboot, I was hoping Alex Garland (Sunshine, 28 Days Later) cooked up a more interesting story than what looks to be a simple, confined building take-over (akin to this year’s The Raid). One can check out the trailer below also featuring Lena Headey, Jason Cope, Langley Kirkwood,...

It is curious though that we haven’t seen anything from the film yet except for some images and now, this new poster. Oh well, I’m sure they know what they’re doing. After all, they did promise it would be better than the Stallone version, and I’m sure they wouldn’t promise it if they couldn’t deliver. Right?
