It’s still unclear exactly what happened on the set of “Bachelor in Paradise” to cause production to shut down. But what is clear is that the ABC dating series is certainly not the first reality TV show to deal with difficult decisions regarding sex and alcohol. Warner Bros. announced on Sunday it had halted filming on the popular series following “allegations of misconduct.” According to numerous accounts, the incident in question involved two cast members who had been drinking, and contestants Corinne Olympios and DeMario Jackson have both issued statements this week indicating they were the ones involved. Seth Grossman,...

On this week's episode of “The Vulture TV Podcast,” we discuss the two latest entrants in the traditionally "off" TV season — UnREAL, Lifetime's new scripted drama about the brutal world of reality-tv production, is already a Vulture favorite; while we're more divided on The Whispers, ABC's supernatural drama about possessed children. And how's the summer TV season shaping up in general? "We're in for a pretty good 'stories about women' summer," says Margaret. Seth Grossman has produced dozens of reality shows for MTV, VH1, National Geographic, and Fox, on subjects ranging from drug addiction to adult virgins in love. Between reality gigs, he writes and directs feature films and co-wrote the classical music drama A Late Quartet, which starred Philip Seymour Hoffman. On every reality show I’ve ever worked, a point comes when the producers face one another in exasperated bafflement over some production nightmare — a paranoid cast member with a vendetta against a Pa, a drunk executive steering the show off the rails — and say, “This should be the show.” And so Lifetime’s new scripted drama UnREAL, a look behind the scenes of a Bachelor-like reality show (called Everlasting), was inevitable. Through reality-tv field producer Rachel Goldberg (Shiri Appleby), a T-shirt feminist whose legal fees have forced her into indentured servitude on Everlasting, the show explores the moral hazards that...

At the Los Angeles Film Festival last summer, producer Robin Schorr screened indie midnight horror flick "Inner Demons" for audiences and buyers, crossing her fingers that she would land a good distribution deal for the found footage movie. The movie's set-up: we're looking at footage of a recovering teen heroin addict and her family from the TV series “Step Inside Recovery," the sort of reality show that "Inner Demons" director Seth Grossman once produced. Those around her assume her symptoms are those of withdrawal, but one cameraman believes that she may be possessed. IFC Midnight scooped up the film and released it day and date on October 3 in theaters and on VOD. (Here's the Nyt review.) In today's changing distribution landscape, Schorr was relieved to be able to reach audiences in theaters as well as multiple platforms. "We all know for so many movies theatrical is not an...

Do I believe there are demons and devils living among us in parallel realms, just waiting to be summoned by a wayward soul whose heart has been consumed by darkness? I remain a cautious skeptic, because I’ve seen too many horror movies to know the (implicated) risks that such investigations carry, but I do believe there are “demons” swimming inside every one of us. Addiction, rage, jealousy – it’s our inner demons that loom like threatening storm clouds, something writer Glenn Gers and director Seth Grossman acknowledge by slamming emotion and the occult together in a thunderous boom. Their film, Inner Demons, captures one unlucky addict’s battle with narcotics and the occult during an Intervention-esque reality program, making way for a found-footage watch that’s deeply rooted in a hazy reality.

Reality television shows can take a wrong turn into horror especially when a demonic possession is involved.
From former reality TV producer Seth Grossman, “Inner Demons” follows an intervention-style reality show crew trying to film a sixteen-year-old girl fighting a drug addiction. However, she was suffering from something even more destructive—a demonic possession. The movie is an inquiry into the truth about her—with symptoms between the disturbing and scary intersection of insanity, addiction and true possession.
The film stars Lara Vosburgh and Morgan McClellan.
Latino-Review was granted an exclusive interview with Grossman to discuss the production of this horror film. We talked about the young actress, the worlds of addiction and demonic possession and even relating the behaviors of hyenas to demons.
“Inner Demons” is playing in select theaters and available on VOD today.

Lara Vosburgh, remember that name. If there is any justice in the world of media production, film, television, theater, what have you, Lara Vosburgh should have a bright and interesting career ahead of her. Inner Demons works overtime thanks to her talent which is nothing short of astonishing.
Inner Demons is presented as a faux documentary, in fact it is presented as a video work in progress, all raw footage shot with hand held cameras and caught on security video systems. Much like Blair Witch Project and the many shot on video films that came in its wake, Inner Demons uses the grounded in reality of shot on video to present an outrageous situation with a believability that is at times, yes, horrifying, and scary.

Philadelphia's Awesome Fest sounds… well… awesome. To be clear, though, it appears this is an evolution of the already-existent event, which is now being called The Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival. As you would expect with a name like that, Bruce Campbell will indeed be there as part of the four-day event in Rosemont, Il, where they'll also be screening a slate of horror titles curated by Scott Weinberg, horror maven and the resident critic at the just-killed FEARnet. They'll also have panels, and they've got some great ones planned. Overall, it looks like a really cool chance to see a fistful of the best of what indie horror has going on right now with bonuses that simply make the weekend better. From August 21 to August 24, you'll be able to check out some great films. How? Well, here's how they put it: Tickets for All screenings are free to attend...

Following a similar path with “Paranormal Actvity" start at a film festival, the movie “Inner Demons” revives the found footage horror films at the Los Angeles Film Festival this year.
The truly scary movie takes a different tact with an intervention reality television show trying to save a young girl from drug abuse. Unbeknownst to the production crew, family and rehab center, the girl is actually possessed by an evil spirit trying to get out.
The film marks the first starring role in a feature film for Lara Vosburgh. It is directed by Seth Grossman (“The Butterfly Effect 3: Revelations”).
Latino-Review had an exclusive sit down interview with Vosburgh and Grossman after their screening at the film festival. We discussed the idea of found footage, horror movies in general and the challenges in acting and makeup.

The Sundance Institute announced I Origins as the winner of the Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, as well as the recipient of the Alfred P. Sloan Lab Fellowship, which is presented through the Institute’s Feature Film Program.
These activities, as well as a panel at the Festival and the Alfred P. Sloan Commissioning Grant, are part of the Sundance Institute Science-in-Film Initiative, which is made possible by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The initiative supports the development and exhibition of new independent film projects that explore science and technology themes or that depict scientists, engineers and mathematicians in engaging and innovative ways.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Sundance Institute for the 11th year in a row and to recognize Mike Cahill’s original and compelling I Origins as the winner of this year’s Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize,” said Doron Weber, Vice President, Programs at the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. “With Academy Award-nominated films like this year’s Gravity and Her, I Origins—as well as new scripts we are developing with Sundance Institute Labs such as The Buried Life and Prodigal Summer—demonstrates that not only are science and technology central to understanding, engaging with and dramatizing modern life, but they also make for cracking good films that draw large audiences.”
Keri Putnam, Executive Director of Sundance Institute, said, “Independent filmmakers offer unique perspectives on the role math, science and technology play in our world and culture. The Sundance Institute Science-in-Film Initiative, with critical support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, recognizes and encourages these projects as they make their way to audiences.”
Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize
I Origins, directed and written by Mike Cahill, has been awarded the 2014 Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize and will receive a $20,000 cash award by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The Prize is selected by a jury of film and science professionals and presented to outstanding feature films focusing on science or technology as a theme, or depicting a scientist, engineer or mathematician as a major character.
In I Origins, a molecular biologist and his lab partner uncover startling evidence that could fundamentally change society as we know it and cause them to question their once-certain beliefs in science and spirituality. The cast includes Michael Pitt, Brit Marling, Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Steven Yeun, Archie Panjabi. The jury presented the award to the film for its “intelligent and nuanced portrayal of molecular biologists as central characters, and for dramatizing the power of the scientific process to explore fundamental questions about the human condition.”
Previous Alfred P. Sloan Prize Winners include: Andrew Bujalski, Computer Chess (2013); Jake Schreier, Christopher Ford, Robot & Frank (2012); Musa Syeed, Valley of Saints (2012); Mike Cahill and Brit Marling, Another Earth (2011); Diane Bell, Obselidia (2010); Max Mayer, Adam (2009); Alex Rivera, Sleep Dealer (2008); Shi-Zheng Chen, Dark Matter (2007); Andrucha Waddington, The House of Sand (2006); Werner Herzog, Grizzly Man (2005), Shane Carruth, Primer (2004) and Marc Decena, Dopamine (2003). Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Founded in 1934, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is a non-profit philanthropy that makes grants in science, technology and economic performance. This Sloan-Sundance partnership forms part of a broader national program by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to stimulate leading artists in film, television, and theater; to create more realistic and compelling stories about science and technology; and to challenge existing stereotypes about scientists, engineers, and mathematicians in the popular imagination. Over the past decade, the Foundation has partnered with some of the top film schools in the country – including AFI, Carnegie Mellon, Columbia, Nyu, UCLA, and USC – and established annual awards in screenwriting and film production and an annual first-feature award for alumni. The Foundation has also started an annual Sloan Feature Film Prize at the Hamptons International Film Festival and initiated new screenwriting and film production workshops at the Hamptons and Tribeca Film Festival and with Film Independent. As more finished films emerge from this developmental pipeline—four features were completed in 2013, with half a dozen more on deck—the foundation has also partnered with the Coolidge Corner Theater and the Arthouse Convergence to screen science films in up to 40 theaters nationwide. The Foundation also has an active theater program and commissions over a dozen science plays each year from the Ensemble Studio Theater, Manhattan Theatre Club and Playwright Horizons.
Several past winners have also been awarded Jury Awards at the Festival, including the Grand Jury Prize for Primer, the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award for Sleep Dealer and the Excellence in Cinematography Award for Obselidia.
This year’s Alfred P. Sloan jury members are:

Back in 2010, Jon Watts and Christopher Ford put together a fake trailer for a horror movie called "Clown." They decided to make it seem that Eli Roth was involved by adding his name. This got the attention of Roth, who gave the two guys an opportunity to turn their fake trailer into a real movie. Today, we have a trailer (watch below) for the real movie they put together that Roth produced. The film stars Peter Stormare (Fargo) and Laura Allen (From Within) and has already premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year. A release date has yet to be announced. Plot: A loving father dons a clown outfit, wig, bulbous nose, and pancake makeup to entertain at his son, Jack's, sixth birthday after the clown-for-hire is a no-show. Demons, man. We all have them. They make us eat too much, drink too much, and engage in activities that we know are bad but we do anyway. In fact they can screw us up so badly that a quick possession every now and again seems like the least of our worries. But in any event...
Word has come that director Seth Grossman (The Butterfly Effect 3) is now in post-production on his latest flick, Inner Demons. Leslie Coutterand, Ashley Sutton, and Susan Ateh star.
Synopsis:
An "Intervention"-style reality show crew films an episode about a sixteen-year-old girl, a former A-student who is fighting addiction but may in fact be suffering from something even more destructive: demonic possession. The movie is an inquiry into the truth about her – with symptoms that straddle the disturbing and scary intersection between insanity, addiction, and true possession.

★★★★☆ Yaron Zilberman's feature debut A Late Quartet (2012), starring Catherine Keener, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Christopher Walken, follows the fortunes of an acclaimed New York string quartet who find its future threatened by petty rivalries and inner discord. When Peter (Walken) the cellist and founder of 'The Fugue Quartet', discovers that he has Parkinson's disease it looks as though the group he has played with for over twenty years may have to disband. Peter is desperate to play one last concert with his friends and, in particular, to master Beethoven's notoriously difficult arrangement String Quartet No. 14.
The ailing Peter is also determined to find a replacement cellist so that the quartet can continue without him. Second violinist Robert (Seymour Hoffman) and violist Juliette (Keener) happily combine career and marriage. Music runs in the family and their talented daughter, Alexandra (British actress Imogen Poots, last seen in biopic The Look of Love...

Robot and Frank; Identity Thief; Red Dawn; Fire in the Night; A Field in England
What a strange little movie is Robot and Frank (2012, EOne, 12). Set in the near future, this gentle, sci-fi-inflected oddity finds Frank Langella playing an ageing cat burglar who becomes the unwilling recipient of a robot butler. Initially scornful of his automated assistant (and depressed by encroaching dementia), Frank warms to the robot's charms when he realises that he can become a partner in crime.
It sounds terrible, like some misjudged hybrid of the all too real pain of Iris and the fantastical comedy of Sleeper. Yet somehow it works, with writer Christopher Ford and director Jake Schreier conjuring an unexpectedly touching and bittersweet tale about the rigours of old age and the peculiar twists of unlikely friendship. Peter Sarsgaard provides the voice of the robot who overturns generic conventions by being both utterly practical and increasingly amiable,...

Director: Yaron Zilberman; Screenwriters: Seth Grossman, Yaron Zilberman; Starring: Christopher Walken, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Imogen Poots; Running time: 106 mins; Certificate: 15
Christopher Walken gives a sedate turn as the leading member of a world-renowned string quartet who is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. This sounds like the set-up for a distinctly high-brow drama - all weeping violins and quiet suffering - but behind the scenes, the power struggles are as screechingly loud, lowd own and dirty as any you'd find in a late-night soap opera.
Thank goodness for an eminent ensemble that includes Philip Seymour Hoffman on second violin and Catherine Keener on viola, as Robert and Juliette, whose long marriage creaks under the strain when cellist Peter (Walken) announces his retirement. The dynamic of the Fugue Quartet suddenly shifts and founding member Daniel (Mark Ivanir) steps up to lead them into an uncertain future.

Following its Tiff premiere and subsequent Us release late last year, Yaron Zilberman’s A Late Quartet is finally arriving here in the UK next month.
Featuring a terrific leading cast in Christopher Walken, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, and Mark Ivanir, the film was well received across the Atlantic back in the autumn/fall last year. And now its UK release is certainly something to look forward to in a few weeks’ time.
Ahead of the release, the UK quad poster has debuted online, along with the UK trailer variant, reminding us what we’ve got to look forward to here.
The Fugue Quartet have performed together for over 25 years, attracting worldwide acclaim. However, when one member admits that time may have finally caught up with them, the quartet are faced with an uncertain future. Chicago – Those who know the language of music at its highest levels seemingly know the secret of the world. But as “A Late Quartet” demonstrates, they also possess the same human foibles as the rest of us. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener and Christopher Walken portray maestros at an emotional crossroads.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
The film is magnificently passionate, with a literal script that debates the finer points of a successfully routine ritual, long relationships and the decision to face the end of a career. It focuses on four people who are intertwined by a business relationship – that of a high level symphony string quartet – but hiding the emotional context of that interaction, leading to inappropriate expressions of their truth once it all comes to the surface. The acting is superb, especially the old lion in winter Christopher Walken, gratefully pulling away from his stereotypical persona and delivering a nuanced and subtle performance.

While most of Austin, Texas is currently busy gearing up for Fantastic Fest (including our own Fantastic Fest Death Squad), we’d be remiss to not mention that another one of Atx’s homegrown film festivals, the concisely-named Austin Film Festival, has just released their lineup. And it’s a real beauty! The festival, kicking off in just under a month, will open with David Chase’s Not Fade Away and will also include screenings of such buzzed-about titles as Flight, Silver Linings Playbook, The Sessions, Quartet, and The Sapphires. The festival has yet to announce their Closing Night Film, but with such an already-strong lineup, it should be a doozy. After the break, take a look at the current feature-length lineup for the 2012 Austin Film Festival and Conference, including listings for their comedy and documentary sections. #35. A Late Quartet - Yaron Zilberman Not sure if Synecdoche, New York pair Philip Seymour Hoffman and Catherine Keener own or thought about buying a condo in Park City, they might as well since they might be back again for an umpteenth time. Already in the can for several months now, Yaron Zilberman's first foray into fiction feature filmmaking pans out into fare we end up finding in Sundance every year. Almost seven years since his docu debut Watermarks, Zilberman would come to the fest without the stress of bidder wars as Rko Pictures have already picked up the drama. Look for A Late Quartet to receive a Premieres showing. Oh, and Christopher Walken and Imogen Poots also star. Gist: Scripted by Zilberman and Seth Grossman, this centers on a world-renowned string quartet struggle to stay together in the face of death, competing egos and insuppressible lust. Set in iconic New York City,...

Boasting a fantastic cast led by Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken, Catherine Keener, Mark Ivanir, and Imogen Poots, A Late Quartet sounds like it’s going to be one of the finer indie films to look forward to next year.
The Playlist have now got a nice first look at the film, which is to be director Yaron Zilberman’s feature debut after achieving some success with his 2004 documentary, Watermarks.
It’s not often that we get to see a film that has classical music at its centre, and the ones that do come along are usually done very well, so I’m definitely hoping A Late Quartet will follow that pattern. I think it’s a pretty safe bet that the film will have plenty of fantastic moments of music to enjoy throughout.

The first-look image above marks the first time I’ve heard anything about Yaron Zilberman‘s A Late Quartet, but after glancing through the splendid cast and the intriguing synopsis, this is a film that could quietly become one of 2012′s surprise offerings. It will mark Zilberman‘s narrative debut — his first feature-length project was the acclaimed 2004 documentary Watermarks. Along with Seth Grossman (The Elephant King), Zilberman has also co-wrote the New York City-based screenplay, which follows “the elder leader of a famed string quartet who is suffering from Parkinson’s Disease.” [The Playlist]
The cast includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Christopher Walken, Imogen Poots, and Wallace Shawn — quite a prominent group for a little-known director, which could mean that they all were on the same page with respect to the project’s potential.
At this point, a 2011 release is almost out of the question, as we’ve heard nothing yet from the film’s distributor,...

We first heard about the indie drama A Late Quartet last year, when Ethan Hawke was cast in the lead. Things have changed a bit, but possibly for the better: the cast now includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener and Christopher Walken. Yaron Zilberman is directing A Late Quartet soon, and Ethan Hawke, once announced for a lead role [1], has had to drop out. But he's been replaced by Philip Seymour Hoffman, which to me is a win. Catherine Keener, previously rumored, has been confirmed as well, and after a brief turn as rumored cast members, Christopher Walken and Imogen Poots have also signed on for parts. Jeremy Northam is on board, too. The director co-wrote with Seth Grossman, and the story follows "a quartet whose members have performed together for 25 years and have to adjust to one of them retiring due to Parkinson’s disease." The character Hawke was...

Zilberman's previous credits include the 2004 documentary Watermarks, about an Austrian female swim team from the 1930s. Rko Pictures is slated to distribute A Late Quartet, which Zilberman penned with Seth Grossman. It shoots later this month in New York.

Love Ethan Hawke or hate him, but you have to appreciate that he makes exactly , whether he's writing and directing an indie film or just popping up in an Off-Broadway play as a favor to a friend. Next up in the unpredictable career of Ethan Hawke will be A Late Quartet, a drama about a group of musicians who have performed together for 25 years now forced to cope with one of their members developing Parkinson's. According to Variety Hawke will play a violinist in the group who starts an affair with his jogging partner, quite possibly because "jogging partner" already sounds like a euphemism for an affair so he figured he may as well go for it. The actual reason given is that he wants more solos, but that makes even less sense, so I'll stick with the euphemism idea for now. Yaron Zilberman wrote the script with Seth Grossman...

Yaron Zilberman is directing from a script co-written with Seth Grossman. Don't count on any "world's smallest violin" jokes. Second, THR reports the voluptuous Christina Hendricks has joined the indie drama Detachment, the story of a normally detached substitute teacher (Adrien Brody) who becomes invested in the students and teachers at the troubled school where he works and grows close to a homeless teen...
