T. Lawrence Shannon looks more like a dock worker than a clergyman but to the women in his congregation he’s as soulful as one of Raphael’s angels. The problem is that this particular angel’s wings have been clipped. Shannon’s faith isn’t the only thing he’s struggling with; his wandering eye and freethinking ways suggest a reined-in version of Urbain Grandier, the randy minister of The Devils of Loudon. But where Grandier was unrepentant, Shannon is a walking guilt complex.
There’s a storm brewing this rainy Sunday morning and inside the church Shannon is doing his best to match it; his sermon begins in a reverent whisper but builds to a booming confession, “He that hath no...

Deborah Kerr would’ve celebrated her 97th birthday on September 30, 2018. With six Oscar bids to her name, the Scottish-born thespian is one of the most celebrated performers of all time. Still, she must’ve done something right to rack up all that Academy recognition. In honor of her birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1921, Kerr got her start on the London stage before appearing in her first film when she was just 20-years-old: “Major Barbara” (1941). She had her big break two years later in Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger‘s epic “The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp” (1943). Kerr reunited with the filmmaking duo for “Black Narcissus...

Five years ago this weekend Tim Burton’s updating of Dark Shadows, the gothic/horror-themed soap opera which ran from 1966 to 1971 on ABC and was a seminal influence on a generation of budding horror fans (including Burton), was released on American movie screens, one weekend after Marvel’s The Avengers was still dictating the imaginations (and the wallets) of moviegoers everywhere. Given Burton’s track record with horror comedies (Beetlejuice being the primary example) and collaborations with Johnny Depp (Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands), a surprisingly low number of ticket-buyers seemed ultimately to care—the movie, which cost $150 million to make, and undoubtedly a hefty chunk of change more than that to market, would earn back only slightly more than half of that in the United States, though its final take globally came in at around $235 million. There were a few takers among critics, notably...

'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' 2015: Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' movie is a domestic box office bomb: Will it be saved by international filmgoers? Directed by Sherlock Holmes' Guy Ritchie and toplining Man of Steel star Henry Cavill and The Lone Ranger costar Armie Hammer, the Warner Bros. release The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has been a domestic box office disaster, performing about 25 percent below – already quite modest – expectations. (See also: “'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' Movie: Bigger Box Office Flop Than Expected.”) This past weekend, the $80 million-budget The Man from U.N.C.L.E. collected a meager $13.42 million from 3,638 North American theaters, averaging $3,689 per site. After five days out, the big-screen reboot of the popular 1960s television series starring Robert Vaughn and David McCallum has taken in a mere $16.77 million. For comparison's sake:...

Sam Hall, who wrote for such soap operas as Dark Shadows, Once Life to Live and Santa Barbara, died Friday after a short bout with pneumonia in Rhinebeck, N.Y., his son, Matt, told The Hollywood Reporter. He was 93. Hall, a five-time Daytime Emmy Award nominee and Peabody Award winner, was married for 33 years to the late Grayson Hall, who received a supporting actress Oscar nomination for playing Judith Fellowes in John Huston’s The Night of the Iguana (1964). She also portrayed parapsychologist Julia Hoffman, who futilely attempted to cure Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) of his vampire

When I announced that The Film Experience would be the new home of the long departed series Stinky Lulu's Smackdown last summer I figured you would be thrilled. It's our kind of party. I promised Stinky we'd do at least six smackdowns if we brought it back. With four battles already behind us -- pie throwing 1952, shady and sinister 1968, warm and kooky 1980, and troubled histrionic 2003-- let's wrap it up with four more.
Rather than announce at the end of each month, I figured we'd give you all four lineups in case you'd like more time to catch up over the hot months and cast your votes in the reader polling that accompanies each battle. Those votes count toward the final outcome, so more of you should join in.
These annums were chosen after comment reading, dvd searching, handwringing, and also to rope in prospective panelists (to be announced later...

It's a great time to be a fan of Dark Shadows. Thanks to Tim Burton's revamp, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has seen fit to give enthusiasts of the gothic / horror soap what they've wanted for years - high-definition editions of the theatrical releases House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows. House of Dark Shadows is an abridged version of the Barnabas Collins storyline of the popular television show. However, creator / director Dan Curtis was forced to explore different plot avenues with Night of Dark Shadows.
Night of Dark Shadows focuses on the arrival of artist Quentin Collins (David Selby) and his wife, Tracy (Kate Jackson), to his newly inherited home, Collinwood. He's greeted by the mysterious housekeeper, Carlotta Drake (Grayson Hall), and the caretaker, Gerard Stiles (Jim Storm). Quentin begins having visions of a past existence in which he's having an affair with his brother's wife, Angelique...

*full disclosure: a Blu-ray copy of each of the titles reviewed here was made available by Warner Home Video for review. House of Dark Shadows Director: Dan Curtis. Writers: Sam Hall and Gordon Russell. Cast: Jonathan Frid, Grayson Hall and Kathryn Leigh Scott. Night of Dark Shadows Director: Dan Curtis. Writers: Dan Curtis and Sam Hall. Cast: David Selby, Grayson Hall and Kate Jackson. The video release of House of Dark Shadows and its sequel, Night of Dark Shadows, offer fans of the classic series a chance to complete their collection. Both titles showcase a very clean transfer of 35mm print in lieu of the lack of extras that some dated products suffer from. Both products merely offer a grainy theatrical trailer to watch. The House of Dark Shadows is a theatrical treatment of the television soap and Night of Dark Shadows continues the saga with the next heir to...

The success of the first Dark Shadows film had Dan Curtis once again returning to Collinwood. However this time he wouldn.t have his vampire star. The result is more let down by editing scissors than the absence of Barnabas Collins. Quentin (David Selby) Collins and his wife Tracy (Kate Jackson) have inherited the gothic estate of Collinswood. They find an expansive but decaying estate run by creepy housekeeper Carlotta (Grayson Hall) and the grave groundskeeper Gerard (Jim Storm). They.ve let a nearby house to their friends Alex (John Karlen) and Claire (Nancy Bartlett) Jenkins. Things seem to be looking up for Quentin and Tracy, but soon he is having troubling dreams of a woman named Angelique (Lara...

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre releases for October.
Cinderella (1950) Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
The Walt Disney classic finally makes it high definition debut. Though it was made over half a century ago, Cinderella remains a timeless work of animation. Part of its lasting appeal can be attributed to the amazing concept art of Mary Blair, whose gorgeous backgrounds and unique color palettes help to define its iconic visual style. Though she was only credited with color and styling, her influence in the look and feel of the finished product cannot be denied. Another aspect that is often overlooked is the lovely vocal contribution by actress Ilene Woods. She brings a measured confidence to the beloved heroine and her singing voice is as gorgeous as the animation.
Special Features:
• Tangled Ever After Animated Short
• Behind the Magic: A New Disney Princess Fantasyland...

Another Halloween treat will be coming on October 30th this year. And don’t worry, it’s not the Tim Burton and Johnny Depp Dark Shadows. It’s the original stuff. House Of Dark Shadows and Night Of Dark Shadows, two features based on the Dark Shadows soap opera, released in 1970 and ’71 respectively, are now coming to DVD and Blu-Ray for the first time, according to DVD Active.
They are priced at $14.96 each on DVD and $19.98 on Blu-Ray. Unfortunately, a theatrical trailer is the only special feature to be find on both films. The House Of Dark Shadows stars Jonathan Frid as Barnabas Collins, Grayson Hall and Kathryn Leigh Scott. The Night Of Dark Shadows stars David Selby as Quentin Collins, with Kate Jackson, Grayson Hall and Lara Parker co-starring.

Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Julia Hoffman, Chloë Grace Moretz as Carolyn Stoddard, Eva Green as Angelique Bouchard, Gulliver McGrath as David Collins, Bella Heathcote as Victoria Winters, Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, Ray Shirley as Mrs. Johnson, Jackie Earle Haley as Willie Loomis, Jonny Lee Miller as Roger Collins, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, Dark Shadows Tim Burton / Johnny Depp’s Dark Shadows is off to a middling start, earning $550,000 at Thursday midnight screenings in North America. Comparing the box-office performance of Dark Shadows to those of, say, Jennifer Lawrence’s eagerly awaited The Hunger Games or Joss Whedon’s superhero ensemble The Avengers would be not only cruel but downright unfair. Although the previous Burton / Depp collaboration, Alice in Wonderland, was a humongous hit, opening with $116 million in March 2010, Burton’s campy version of the late ’60s soap opera Dark Shadows has a different sort of appeal.
