The Oscars added a category for casting, and it’s about damn time.
The announcement of the new category, slated to debut in 2026 for films released in 2025, has been warmly received on social media by awards aficionados. Many consider it a long-overdue acknowledgment, especially since the Casting Directors Branch was established over a decade ago in 2013. However, this raises questions about future categories and if, when, and how they will be accommodated in an awards ceremony that aims to stay under three hours.
It’s important to note that the Academy has yet to commit to featuring the best achievement in casting award during the televised ceremony. Details regarding eligibility and voting for the inaugural award will be disclosed in April 2025, alongside the complete rules for the 98th Academy Awards. The presentation method will be determined by the Academy’s Board of Governors and its administrative leadership at a later date.

When the call went out for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Cara Jade Myers first read for the part of Rita and then for her sister Mollie, the focus of the film. Finally, she auditioned for the third sister, Anna, who is the most independent and the most troubled, her mother’s favorite but also a hard-drinking partier.
“She was almost larger than life in that character, with a bravery and an unpredictable quality,” says Rene Haynes, who was the film’s Indigenous casting director. “She’s also smart and can think on her feet.”
(Haynes says Zoom bombing a meeting with Myers and her manager to tell her she’d landed the role was “one of the most moving moments of my career,” while Myers says she wishes she’d recorded it. “I just started smiling and sobbing — it was probably the most ugly cry.”)

It’s wild that we don’t have more recognition for the art of casting. Casting directors have a guild with an Academy branch, but not their own Oscar category. While the work can often seem alchemical or opaque to outsiders, casting directors are really in the first line of storytellers who collaborate on a film; they have to see and expand on a director’s vision for the film’s world and find the actors who will embody what the filmmakers aim to create. So IndieWire is bringing back an old pre-pandemic feature to celebrate the storytelling work of casting.
We reached out to a number of the film industry’s top casting directors to ask them to nominate one outstanding work from this year. As it turns out, though, the casting directors we spoke to had lots of films with casting they loved this year. “Being asked to...

Casting director Ellen Lewis and head of Indigenous casting Rene Haynes came to Killers of the Flower Moon from very different backgrounds. The former had worked with Martin Scorsese for many years, beginning with Goodfellas. The latter had been at the forefront of casting Indigenous actors in everything from the Twilight series to the HBO film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which earned her an Emmy nom. When Killers came around, says Lewis, “I contacted Rene immediately because I had met her on [the Netflix series] Godless and knew that I was going to want her with me on this journey.”
Haynes was first hired to cast extras for War Party (1988). Production brought her to the Seven Reservations of Montana, where she says she “developed this strong attachment to [the Indigenous] community.” Soon thereafter was Dances With Wolves (1990), which she says “heralded a realization that Native characters should be played by Native actors.

If it seems like Lily Gladstone is winning Best Actress prizes for her acclaimed performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon” multiple times per week, that’s because it’s true. Since the New York Film Critics Circle announced Gladstone as the group’s Best Actress prizewinner on November 30, the 37-year-old star has been awarded Best Actress by the National Board of Review, Boston Society of Film Critics, and Chicago Film Critics Association, and earned Best Actress nominations from the Golden Globe Awards and Critics’ Choice Awards.
“It feels like a lot,” Gladstone tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview when asked about her early success during awards season. “It’s really exciting. Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
The haunting “Killers of the Flower Moon” scene where Lily Gladstone’s Mollie Burkhart sits at the bottom of a staircase and lets out a devastating scream after learning that her sister was killed in an explosion is one of the film’s most affecting moments. According to cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, it was unscripted.
Prieto, a longtime collaborator of director Martin Scorsese, believes the last-minute change came together because the filmmaker “trusts his actors, and they’re a part of the process.”
Based on the nonfiction book by David Grann, “Killers of the Flower Moon” stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Ernest Burkhart, a war veteran who comes to Oklahoma in the 1920s to work for his wealthy uncle, William King Hale, played by Robert De Niro. Hale encourages Ernest to marry Mollie, as her Osage family owns oil rights and could make them rich.

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains some spoilers for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” — and the factual events on which it is based.]
Actress Cara Jade Myers can’t quite recall when she first heard from a friend that Martin Scorsese was taking on “Killers of the Flower Moon” as his next project — sometime around 2018, she thinks — and she certainly couldn’t possibly foresee how the eventual film would change her entire life. And yet, something moved her all those years ago, and she “immediately” picked up the David Grann book from which Scorsese and screenwriter Eric Roth were pulling from for their fact-based American epic about the Osage Nation murders, read it quickly, and “was horrified at the fact that this has never been taught in history before.”
One of the very first people we meet in Grann’s book is Osage member Anna Brown, sister to the film’s central Osage figure, Mollie Burkhart...

Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro may be the Oscar winners headlining Martin Scorsese‘s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” but there’s actually a third among the supporting cast. So let’s take a look back at Brendan Fraser‘s journey to winning Best Actor for “The Whale” earlier this year.
Adapted from Samuel D. Hunter‘s 2012 stage play, “The Whale” starred Fraser as Charlie, a 600-pound English teacher who isolates himself from the world but is given a chance at redemption as he attempts to restore his relationship with his estranged daughter, Ellie (Sadie Sink). The film had its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on September 4, 2022, where it got a standing ovation. From that moment on, experts started to pencil Fraser in as a front-runner for the Best Actor Oscar.

It took about 100 days to shoot “Killers of the Flower Moon,” according to director Martin Scorsese and producer Daniel Lupi. That came after an extensive script rewrite, multiple interruptions due to Covid-19 and doing everything they could to ensure justice was done to the story.

There was a time when two veteran straight actors such as John Lithgow and Alfred Molina, taking on the roles of a gay couple and their subsequent travails at married life would have been the tabloid equivalent of shock and awe. It still might raise some eyebrows, but Ira Sachs’ Love Is Strange is a testimony to societal progress in terms of storytelling. Now it will face the box office as the Specialty title platforms this weekend via Sony Classics. A real-life gay marriage takes the spotlight this weekend courtesy of Starz Digital doc To Be Takei about the multi-faceted actor/activist and social media talent who is best known for playing Hikaru Sulu in TV’s original Star Trek. It will be joined by Millennium Entertainment’s Are You Here with Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis and Amy Poehler which will open day and date by Mad Men writer Matthew Weiner.

As the captor and the captive flee from hunters across the Pacific Northwest, they form a bond that throws the planned act into question.
The late Herbert’s seminal Dune remains the best-selling science fiction of all time and was adapted into a 1984 feature film by David Lynch and a TV miniseries and sequel in the 2000s.

While the plethora of recent casting news for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has been terribly exciting, it is far from complete. Two major cast members from this, the third in the Twilight book-to-film series, have yet to be announced - Seth and Leah Clearwater. These two characters were the only two subject to the official open casting call hosted by Summit Entertainment's Actor Cast associates back in June. Though the call for auditions closed at the end of June, no official announcement as to who will be Leah and Seth has yet to be released (though their father in the film, Harry, has been cast with Graham Greene). In the meantime, one Leah hopeful had a sit-down with a local newspaper recently, discussing the process of her audition and how she feels about its progress at this point. In that discussion, the young lady, 22 year old Kyla Bearheels, revealed...

We're giving you a look at a just-released photo of the wolf pack in 'New Moon'! USA Today first posted the photo on their web site, along with an article that went into detail on the casting of the wolf pack. According to USA Today, 'New Moon' director Chris Weitz insisted on the actors' Native American ancestry. "They had to have papers that proved their heritage," he said. Weitz also insisted that the actors be in good shape, and be ok with filming almost in the buff in the chilly outdoors of Vancouver. "It's not pleasant for the actors," Weitz told USA Today. "But they have all been good-natured. They show up on location in drenching, cold rain, and I say, 'Ok, off with the robes.' " Chaske Spencer, Bronson Pelletier, Alex Meraz, Kiowa Gordon and Tyson Houseman will join Taylor Lautner in the film's Quileute nation wolf pack. All...

This weekend saw some obvious muscle flexing by Twilight nation, as fans voted Twilight their "Favorite Book" at Saturday's Kid's Choice Awards. But there are even more unseen instances of opinion-voicing going on every day. Just ask casting director Rene Haynes. When Haynes was hired to cast the Native American roles in New Moon, she immediately became the center of attention of fans eager to speak their minds. "It was crazy, especially in the early days," Haynes tells Celebuzz. "In the first four weeks after the announcement that my office was casting these roles we stopped counting emails after 20,000," she tells Celebuzz. "I.

Dakota Fanning’s the latest big name to be linked with the Twilight sequel, New Moon and though she’s playing her cards close to her chest saying: “I really hope that works out. I think it’s too soon to tell right now, but it’d be really fun. I’m a huge fan,” there is some other casting news concerning the much-hyped flick. Posted on the jobs section of Vancouver’s Craigslist site is an advert titled “Open call for major motion picture” which goes on to describe an open casting call that sounds suspiciously like it might be for New Moon...
The advert reveals that casting agency Aikins/ Cossey is “conducting a three city search” looking for “young first nations/aboriginal actors and actresses between the ages of 15 and 25.” Roles up for grabs could include speaking parts and no previous experience is required. Interested? Hot-foot it to Second Avenue Studios,...

René Haynes, the casting director for New Moon, this year's follow-up to the smash hit Twilight, has announced an open casting call for the film, which is scheduled to go into production in a couple of months. The film will be released in November.
Casting Scoop has all the details, as well as a few auditioning pointers, but if you're young Native American, you may have a shot:
"Seeking Native American Teens and Young Adults," the posting begins, "Casting Director René Haynes and her staff are very happy to accommodate any Native teens and young adults (who look very youthful) who are interested in sending them an audition."
So there you go. The next steps are to submit a photo and a contact number to info@rhcasting.com by January 30th. I have a feeling if you get cast, you'll be squarely on team Jacob.

Okay – so you’re not going to replace Kristen Stewart as Bella or Robert Pattinson as Edward (would you really want to anyway?), but it has been announced that the casting folks responsible for the much talked about sequel to Twilight, New Moon are looking for some fresh talent. The actual roles being cast haven’t been confirmed by the suits at Summit Entertainment, the distributor behind the Stephenie Meyer adaptations yet this hasn’t stopped New Moon gossip spreading like wildfire. High School Musical songbird Vanessa Hudgens was rumoured to be auditioning for the part of Leah Clearwater (itself not a huge part in New Moon) and Brit actress Sophia Myles (Tristan + Isolde) has been suggested by MTV as a possible choice for vampire Irina. So far no established stars have signed up, but you could if you fit the bill…
There are some significant changes since last year’s Twilight.

Ernest Hemingway was a crack cub reporter for the Kansas City Star, one of the two venerable media institutions in K.C.; the other is the Hallmark Greeting Card Co. Unfortunately, this saga of the young writer's World War I romance with an older nurse is told in terms more befitting the greeting card folks than the hard-hitting newspaper.
Starring Chris O'Donnell as Ernest Hemingway and Sandra Bullock as nurse Agnes Von Kurowsky -- whom the writer fell in love with and who inspired his "A Farewell to Arms" -- this New Line release will likely be an early boxoffice casualty, owing to its cliched, picture-postcard portrait of young love.
Based on "Hemingway in Love and War: The Lost Diary of Agnes Von Kurowsky," this story is back-dropped by the last carnages of World War I, when Hemingway and Agnes were Red Cross volunteers in Italy. A triumvirate of credited screenwriters (Allan Scott, Clancy Sigal, Anna Hamilton Phelan) has distilled the letters to a romantic dimension. Essentially, the scenario shows us Ernie (as everyone calls him) and Agnes are cut from the same cloth -- both yearn for adventure and are risk-takers. When Ernie is wounded, Agnes saves his leg from amputation by manipulating her superior into letting her undertake an anti-gangrene procedure.
Other than the fact that this saga is based on a famous personage, the story itself is a standard-issue, nurse-patient love story that eventually swoons into a similarly standard refrain, the older woman-younger man boondoggle.
Further diminishing its individuality and poignancy is the bland, expositional dialogue. While warriors and writers, including Hemingway, have duly noted that "War is hell", in this depiction, war is more an aphrodisiac. With the cannon booming in the distance and only a few perfunctory forays into the trenches, the actual war, as pictured in this beauteous mountainscape setting, seems more a romantic stimulant than a life-threatening nightmare.
Indeed, under Richard Attenborough's warm and diffident hand, "In Love and War" emerges more as a progression of Hallmark-like moments as the lovers picnic on the lake, banter in the fresco, quarrel at the cabin, etc.
As the wet-behind-the-ears Hemingway, O'Donnell seems in keeping with the writer's brash bravado. Oddly enough, from the side profile, O'Donnell looks a lot like F. Scott Fitzgerald. Should anyone wish to produce a series centered around the romances of the great writers of the Midwest, O'Donnell could play them all.
Bullock is similarly hamstrung by the strict confines of her role as a conflicted "older woman," torn between young pup Ernie and an older, stuffed shirt. She acquits herself well, however, smartly evincing the quandary of a woman torn between her head and her heart.
Singly, the technical contributions are sublime, but under Attenborough's mix, they emerge as overripe and trite, diminishing the pain and passion of the love-struck duo.
