Conan wasn’t the only literary bad ass created by Robert Howard; the author was also responsible for the lesser known Puritan hero Solomon Kane. Although possessing a staunch morality, Kane was every bit as fierce as the famed barbarian. It’s a shame “Solomon Kane” sits on the shelf with no Us release date, it’s an adaptation that would make Howard grin from ear to ear–wherever he is in the afterlife. When the film opens, Kane is not yet a scourge of evil–quite the opposite in fact. A merciless privateer, he finds himself confronted by the Devil’s Reaper seeking his soul as part of a “deal”. It turns out the deal the Reaper refers to is Solomon’s life of murder and pillage, God has forsaken him and now the Devil wants his due. Fighting off the Reaper and narrowly escaping, Kane dramatically changes. Joining a monastery,...

Ben Foss was a bright kid, but as a student, he struggled with reading even the simplest text. Afflicted with severe dyslexia, he relied on parents and tutors to read him his homework since the words on the page made no sense to him. At Stanford, he managed to earn two advanced degrees by laboriously scanning books and then running them through synthetic speech software so he could comprehend the words.
As an adult, much of the content he wanted in professional journals and magazines wasn't available in audio form.
So, when he was hired as a researcher at Intel, he vowed to make designing a reading device one of his first priorities. At CES 2010, his brainchild, the Intel Reader made its debut. "Feelings of loneliness are often the experience of not being able to read easily," he says, based on years of trying. "We hope to open the doors for people who have dyslexia,...

Toronto -- Roger Avary and Samuel Hadida of Davis Films are climbing back up "Silent Hill."
The screenwriter and producer have signed on for a sequel to their 2006 video game adaptation.
The original, based on the Konami game, centered on a woman who travels to a desolate town to seek help for her ailing daughter only to find supernatural occurrences taking place there.
Davis Films aims to shoot the movie next year after "Resident Evil 4," which it's now prepping.
TriStar released the original "Silent Hill," which earned $47 million domestically; the label has not confirmed involvement on the follow-up.
Avary, best known for his work on Quentin Tarantino scripts such as "Pulp Fiction," also is penning video game adaptation "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" for Davis Films.
The deal is one of several projects for Hadida's company. The French-based banner has come to Toronto with two projects -- Michael Bassett's "Solomon Kane...

New York -- Last year, as the indie-sales market was cratering, acquisition execs walked into the Toronto International Film Festival and found two dramas for which they were willing to pay seven figures.
A year later, those buys have proved savvy: "The Wrestler" was one of the dramatic breakouts of 2008 for Fox Searchlight, while "The Hurt Locker" is on its way to becoming that for Summit.
Industryites' mood is generally brighter entering Toronto this year, or at least more accepting of the dark realities. But a seven-figure deal may be even harder to find at this year's fest, which begins Thursday.
"I tell filmmakers that in this climate, don't count on a studio buying your movie. If they do, it's like winning the lottery," said one publicist who works on high-profile acquisition targets.

Stephen Sommers Fired From G.I. Joe The upcoming reminiscent piece for men and probably some women has proved to be a disaster. According to the Latino Review, at a recent test screening G.I. Joes: The Rise of Cobra received the lowest testing scores in the history of Paramount. And, to make things worse, or maybe better director Stephen Sommers was fired from the project and locked out of the editing room. Fortunately for all the G.I Joe fans, this information was recently said to be untrue. G.I Joe producer Lorenzo di Bonvaentura spoke to the Latino Review about the rumored piece and said: “It’s completely untrue. Stephen Sommers was never asked to leave or been fired or any of that. That’s ridiculous. The movie tested very well.” Paramount has not released a official statement in regards to this matter. Let’s hope for all the G.

This news has been rumored about and ridiculed for the past few months, but now it appears that Brett Ratner will direct the reboot of Conan.
There's still some question about whether or not audiences are really craving this new spin on Robert Howard's original series, known to most casual movie fans because of their launching pad status for the career of Arnold Schwarzenegger. But it's hard to blame Lionsgate for pursuing it in the post-300 movie landscape that will also see reinventions of Red Sonja and Hercules, among others. However, when it comes to selecting Ratner as the director, as Ain't It Cool News now suggests is imminent, there might be plenty of blame to go around.
Ratner is, in all fairness, a pretty versatile director of mediocre movies, meaning he can make an average flick in a lot of genres. He's never really done anything like this,...

Brett Ratner has unsheathed his cinematic broadsword to impale the tender teat of the much beloved barbarian, Conan.
Ain't It Cool News reports that "it appears to be official that Brett Ratner is directing [Conan]." According to the Web site, the film's scribe Howard McCain (Outlander) "had some big plans for how to structure the film," drawing inspirations from the original Robert Howard stories rather than the John Milius directed Conan the Barbarian.
"I could tell the material was in the right hands," says AICN's Moriarty of McCain after the two met earlier this year. But with the news of Ratner's involvement, Moriarty describes his excitement level as falling "through the floor."
"Oh, Brett... why do you want to hurt me? Why do you want to make this movie?" writes Moriarty. "Please, please, please tell me it’s because you have a genuine passion for the material and not just because...

Robert Rodriguez and his girlfriend Rose McGowan are teaming up for a big action movie and this one's not Barbarella. The Sin City co-director and his current muse will remake Red Sonja, based on the Robert Howard character turned into a disastrous film version back in 1985. That one starred Brigitte Nielsen, who, like McGowan, gives off a certain "I'll kick your ass" vibe.
"Rose is a pistol. She's whip-smart, has attitude to burn, is sexy, extremely strong, yet has a vulnerable side that would surprise her closest friends. That description also fits Red Sonja," Rodriguez told USA Today. The only thing is...were we really crying out for Red Sonja to be remade? I think Rodriguez had the same trepidation until he saw the screenplay.
