Exploring the brightness of the dark children’s show.
Execrable is a word which here means “extremely bad or unpleasant.” It is a word which, although appropriately dour in tone, does not actually describe Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, which is actually an exceptional, thrilling adaptation of a series of thirteen children’s mystery books by Daniel Handler. The show’s freshman season covers the first four books of the series, and follows the unhappy lives of three recent orphans as they bounce from caretaker to caretaker, outwit nefarious plots to steal their parents’ fortune, and uncover countless secrets along the way. Its clunky title and avoidance of easy categorization (it’s billed as a very dark children’s show) may be turn-offs for the uninitiated, but, for many reasons, A Series of Unfortunate Events is actually a bright spot of television that shouldn’t be missed.

This review is based on the first four episodes, which were provided prior to us.
Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events was a Ya book series like few others, one that relished in the morose, the bizarre and the tragically hilarious lives of the Baudelaire children, a trio of precocious, remarkably-astute orphans struck with endless tribulations after their house is burned to the ground, everything they owned is destroyed and their parents are horrifically consumed in flames — and that’s before they meet Count Olaf, their wicked, deprived, massively selfish legal guardian who’ll stop at nothing to steal his adopted kids’ enormous fortune.
It was a deliciously absurd, gleefully disdainful, compulsively wicked and thesaurus-friendly 13-part collection, the kind that tickled the fancy of the right kind of young literary consumer (notably, those who enjoy their comedy dark), though one that didn’t quite get the cinematic transition...

Jim Carrey played Count Olaf in the film adaptation of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. What will Neil Patrick Harris do with the role? If this new Netflix series teaser is any indication, blow us all away? "Meet the star of a new Netflix series telling the story of a very handsome actor and three selfish and ungrateful orphans who refuse to give him the enormous fortune their dead parents left behind," writes the YouTube description, continuing the quirky promotion of this new series from Barry Sonnenfeld and Mark Hudis. It's no surprise I'm getting a ton of The Addams Family vibes from this new teaser considering Sonnenfeld directed that 1991 film and its sequel. It also doesn't hurt that Joan Cusack's voice can be heard here (she's playing Justice Strauss). Take a look and see for yourself. Malina Weissman, who plays young Kara Zor-El on The CW's Supergirl,...

Patrick Warburton ("The Tick," "Seinfeld") has scored the key role of Lemony Snicket in Netflix's upcoming straight-to-series adaptation of Daniel Handler's "A Series of Unfortunate Events" novels.
"A Series of Unfortunate Events" tells the tale of orphaned children Violet (Malina Weissman), Klaus (Louis Hynes) and Sunny Baudelaire, who find themselves in the villainous clutches of an evil uncle named Count Olaf (Neil Patrick Harris) who has designs on their family fortune.
Warburton will take on the role of Snicket, the harried and troubled writer-photographer who is falsely accused of felonies and is continuously hunted by police and his enemies. Jude Law voiced the role in the 2004 feature, while Handler wrote the book series under that pen name.
Mark Hudis will take over as showrunner on the series while Handler will executive produce.

Patrick Warburton (Seinfeld, Family Guy, Ted) has one of the most distinctive voices in show business, and according to Deadline, he'll be lending that voice to Netflix's upcoming live-action series Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Warburton will play Lemony Snicket, the narrator of the eight-episode adaptation, joining the recently-confirmed Neil Patrick Harris, who has been cast as Count Olaf. Jude Law played Snicket in the 2004 film adaptation.
A Series of Unfortunate Events recounts the tale of the orphaned children Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire at the hands of the villainous Count Olaf, as they face trials and tribulations, misfortunes, and an evil uncle in search of their fortune, all in their quest to uncover the secret of their parents’ death. You wait months for casting news to emerge from Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events TV reboot and suddenly, two tidbits come along at once.
Granted, earlier today we learned that Neil Patrick Harris had closed a deal to don the cloak and scowl as the menacing Count Olaf, after the How I Met Your Mother star had been linked with a return to serialized television since the turn of the year. Now, though, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Patrick Warburton (Rules of Engagement) has been cast in the role of Lemony Snicket himself.
There, he’ll join Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes – on board as Violet and Klaus, respectively – two thirds of the Baudelaire family who are left with little choice but to share a roof with their devious uncle Olaf (Harris) once their parents pass away in a tragic and unfortunate accident.

Netflix's TV adaptation of Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events has found its Count Olaf. THR reports that Neil Patrick Harris has been cast in the role of the evil uncle who has his sights set on his nieces and nephew's family fortune, and who often utilizes absurd disguises. Jim Carrey played Olaf in the 2004 movie, which Paramount hoped would start a franchise but ultimately failed to be the success they dreamed of. Paramount Television is producing this TV show, which is set to be executive produced (and at least partially directed) by Men in Black director Barry Sonnenfeld.
The bad news is that as Harris boards the show, its showrunner has bailed. Former True Blood showrunner Mark Hudis was tapped to lead the series a few months ago, but he's now left the project and the show is seeking new leadership.
What do you think about Harris as the new Olaf?...

Count Olaf could be played by Neil Patrick Harris in Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of A Series Of Unfortunate Events…
Netflix’s adaptation of A Series Of Unfortunate Events has quite possibly found its Count Olaf. How I Met Your Mother, Gone Girl and 2015 Oscars star Neil Patrick Harris is reportedly in talks to portray the immoral adoptive father – presumably in a variety of disguises – in the upcoming series.
If he takes the part, he’ll be stepping into the shoes of Jim Carrey, who did a fine job portraying Lemony Snicket’s orphan-harassing creation in the 2004 movie version. It’s worth mentioning that Harris has comedic villainous form of his own, having starred in Joss Whedon’s web series Doctor Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog.
This casting rumour has originated from The Hollywood Reporter, who have certainly hit the nail right on the head with their speculation...

Neil Patrick Harris is in negotiations to join the cast of Netflix's series adaptation of the best-selling children's book "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" at Paramount Television.
The story follows orphaned children Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire who finds themselves in the villainous clutches of an evil uncle named Count Olaf who has designs on their family fortune. Harris would play Olaf whom was played by Jim Carrey in the Brad Silberling-directed 2004 film.
At the same time, Mark Hudis ("True Blood") is exiting his role as showrunner on the straight-to-series adapatation, and a replacement has yet to be named.
A thirteen episode order has already been handed out but there's no premiere date as yet. Daniel Handler will executive produce.

Back in 2004, Lemony Snicket’s massively popular A Series Of Unfortunate Events novels (well, the first three anyways) were adapted for the big screen. Unfortunately, the results were rather underwhelming and so, the rest of the books never made it into theatres. Fast forward to the present day and Netflix is now giving the source material a shot with a 13 episode series.
Development on the project has been quite for a while, but this week we got a major update, as THR broke the news that Neil Patrick Harris has signed on to star as the villainous Count Olaf. For those unfamiliar with the novels, Olaf is a distant relative of the Baudelaire children and takes care of them when their parents die in a fire. However, he has ulterior motives and as it turns out, he’s not quite who he says he is.

Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are coming to Netflix, and now we know who will be overseeing the trials and tribulations of the luckless orphans. Per Variety, the online streaming giant has recruited Barry Sonnenfeld and Mark Hudis for A Series of Unfortunate Events, who join the project as director and showrunner, respectively.
Both will executive produce alongside Lemony Snicket creator, Daniel Handler. The recruitment of Sonnenfeld in particular marks an unofficial reunion of sorts, given that the filmmaker was once considered to direct the 2004 big-screen adaptation, before he was ultimately replaced by Brad Silberling. Edward Norton's fantastic 2006 film The Illusionist is the latest movie to be added to the list of TV series adaptations. I really liked this movie, especially for the fact that it centered on magic, which is something I'm completely fascinated with. On top of that it had an intriguing story.
The movie was written and directed by Neil Burger, and it's set in 1889 Vienna. The story centers around a magician named Eisenheim (Norton), who is competing with the Crown Prince for the love of a noble woman (Jessica Biel). At the same time he's being chased and investigated by the chief of police (Paul Giamatti), who is suspicious of his talents.
The series is being written by Mark Hudis (True Blood), and according to Deadline, the new adaptation will take place in turn of the century New York. "It centers on a renowned illusionist who returns home from a...

Two more adaptations have been added to the list of TV series based on films. EW can confirm that a script has been ordered by The CW for a show based on the 2006 film The Illusionist, which starred Ed Norton as the titular character. The project is being written by Mark Hudis and executive produced by Ben Silverman and Bob Yari. The show comes from CBS Television Studios, Electus, and the Yari Film Group. The TV adaptation would transplant the film from its Vienna locale to turn-of-the-20th-century New York, where a renowned illusionist has returned to his home after a 10-year stint in prison.

The CW and Yari Film Group are teaming to develop "The Illusionist," a TV series based on the 2006 period drama film of the same name starring Edward Norton, Jessica Biel and Paul Giamatti.
The original starred Norton as a magician in 19th Century Vienna who uses his incredible skills to win the heart of a Duchess and save her from the brutal Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell) to whom she is betrothed.
The TV series switches around the premise and setting, which will now take place in New York City at the turn of the century. There an illusionist returns home from a decade in prison to find his wife married to the ruthless crime boss who framed him.
The illusionist disguises himself as an underling in the crime lord's organization, using his sleight-of-hand skills to pull off daring heists, rising through the ranks to win back his beloved and bring down the crime boss.

The Illusionist will be adapted for TV by The CW.
Neil Burger's 2006 movie starred Ed Norton, Jessica Biel and Paul Giamatti.
True Blood executive producer Mark Hudis will write the show, which will be produced by CBS Television Studios, Electus and Yari Film Group, Deadline reports.
It will be executive-produced by Hudis with Ben Silverman and Bob Yari.
The film itself was loosely based on Steven Millhauser's short story, Eisenheim the Illusionist.
Set in end-of-the-1800s Vienna, it centres around magician Eisenheim who uses his abilities to woo a duchess.
The CW's new version will be transplanted to New York, with the titular magician returning home from a decade in prison to discover his wife married to the crime boss who framed him.
He joins the crime organisation and rises through the ranks by using his skills to bring down the boss and win back his wife.

Nope, it's not an illusion: yet another movie title is being adapted for the small screen. Writer-director Neil Burger's 2006 magician drama "The Illusionist" starring Edward Norton and Jessica Biel is being adapted for television by the CW, according to Deadline. Penned by "True Blood" writer Mark Hudis, the show will take place against the backdrop of turn of the century New York City (as opposed to Vienna, where the film version was set) and will center on a famous illusionist who returns home after a decade in prison to find that his ex-wife has wed the crime boss who framed him. He goes on to pose as a lackey in the organization, using his skills to pull off a series of elaborate heists and rise through the ranks in order to take down the gang leader from the inside. Loosely based on the Steven Millhauser short story "Eisenheim the Illusionist,...

HBO recently announced that its long-running vampire sex comedy True Blood will be back for a seventh season of Southern-fried, fang-bangin’, bloody-merkined fun. The show has taken some unexpected turns in the past few years (especially to people who have read the books), so it’s hard to predict what the hell Sookie, Billith, Eric, and the rest of the Bon Temps crew will be up to next year. Fortunately, we have degrees in Advanced Predictology and are expert at divining the future arcs of aggressively ridiculous episodic supernatural dramedies.
Here are our predictions…
1. Merlotte’s Will Be Home Base Once Again
At last week’s Comic-Con panel, new showrunner Brian “Bucky” Buckner (who stepped in to replace Mark Hudis, who replaced Alan Ball) indicated that he wasn’t happy with the show’s six-ways-’til-Sunday feel, and will be bringing things back to Ben Temps with fewer story threads:...

We thought it was huge when Alan Ball announced he's stepping down from the showrunner post at HBO's "True Blood." But, things got really interesting when his replacement Mark Hudis was replaced. Brian Buckner (fourth from right, above), a writer on the series since Season 1, assumed the position mid-season on Season 6. "It's like being in a car crash," Buckner said during the show's panel at San Diego Comic-Con. "We had to shift on the fly. I never knew how hard Alan worked. The job doesn't stop. It just keeps going.

This past Monday brought splendid news for fans of HBO’s True Blood in the form of a renewal for a seventh season. The news that HBO wants more True Blood isn’t at all shocking – it is, after all, the premium cable channel’s third-most watched original scripted series after The Sopranos and Game of Thrones – so I don’t know if anyone should be terribly excited or not. It is absolutely good news for the fans, but if the show was never in any danger of being canceled, how do you react? With a semi-enthusiastic fist pump? Maybe a raising of glasses and a dull cheer? Yay?
True Blood may be nowhere near the point where HBO would consider cancelling it, but it’s not exactly gaining new viewers. The Season 6 premiere drew in 4.5 million viewers in total, which is down 700,000 from Season 5’s premiere. Some allowances must...

"True Blood" has apparently successfully weathered its first season without Alan Ball and will be back for Season 7. HBO announced on Monday (July 15) that it has renewed "True Blood," which will return for its seventh season in the summer of 2014. Brian Buckner will remain as "True Blood" showrunner for the new episodes. Buckner, a longtime writer and producer on "True Blood," was a midseason replacement for Mark Hudis, who initially took over as showrunner after Alan Ball decided to leave that gig after five seasons. True Blood, Season 6: Episode 3 – “You’re No Good”
Directed by Howard Deutch
Written by Mark Hudis
Airs Sunday nights at 9 on HBO
I think when I tried to maintain some level of optimism about True Blood last week, I was probably coming to the beginning of this season hoping it wouldn’t be any less a mess than the last couple years – to hope that it can become pure fun again is too much of a stretch at this point. It’s not like these first few episodes of season six are noticeably worse than the material from last season; but they’re still bad, and maybe that’s where I had my expectations mixed up: with a show that used to be fun and has descended into nonsense, it’s not okay just to want it to be less nonsensical. If the writing used to be fun, then...

Eric is threatening to rape Willa to death. He has her glamoured, and lowers his head to drink her dry. Pam and Tara are not pleased to see her. Willa tells him that the money from last year’s ballot measures did not go to roadwork or schools, but it went into building a “camp” for vampires - more concentration than summer. "True Blood" returns for its sixth season tonight, and as much as that's a cause for celebration there are still plenty of reasons to feel, at the very least, ill at ease. As everyone knows, creator Alan Ball has left the show (though he assures us it's in more than capable hands with replacement showrunner Mark Hudis). Cue ominous music here. Okay, maybe that's an overreaction, but when it comes to TV, change is always a little unnerving. Though the series is based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels, it's not hard to think Ball was instrumental in nailing down the show's tone,...

We have a new trailer for True Blood’s sixth season and I’m on the fence about it. True Blood has always been a bit of mixed bag for my taste. Every year, the trailers and promo posters get me excited that this season is going to be the one that reaches new heights of intensity, that we’ll get a full 12 episodes that work flawlessly together from premiere to finale. But every year I’m greatly disappointed in the final product. We get a decent start, followed by a dragging middle section.
