Luigi Comenicini’s The Sunday Woman makes for an intriguing blend of police procedural and comedy of manners. It isn’t really a giallo, despite an investigation into a bizarre murder that fuels further misdeeds. As a satire of Turin’s upper classes, it isn’t nearly as trenchant, let alone grim, as other examples of commedia all’italiana like Dino Risi’s Il Sorpasso or Pietro Germi’s Seduced and Abandoned, though it does share their preoccupation with character types that border on the grotesque. Taken on its own terms, the film is absorbing, frequently amusing, and exceedingly well directed by Comencini, who keeps things moving with admirably brisk efficiency.

It’s still one of the most popular movies ever, and fans are proving that by shelling out for an umpteenth home video release, this time on the 4K Ultra HD format. Everybody knows exactly what to expect from Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach, but what about the transfer quality and encoding — Sergio Leone’s film was originally shot in the half-frame Techniscope format, which is on the low-res side to scan in 4K. Kino adds a Blu-ray disc and a mountain of accumulated extras from earlier editions.

The strangest Italian portmanteau picture of the sixties features glorious Silvana Mangano in dozens of costume changes, directed by big names (Visconti, De Sica, Pasolini) and paired with a woefully miscast Clint Eastwood. The other major attraction is a delightful music score by Piero Piccioni, with an assist from Ennio Morricone.

After a strong performance last month, the December box office is currently pacing ahead of 2016 by 3% while the overall year is still pacing just a bit behind 2016, currently by 4.2%. However, now comes what will surely be the highest grossing domestic release of the year, Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The latest film in the Star Wars franchise is looking to become only the fourth domestic release to ever open over $200 million, sure to assist in closing the year-to-year gap even further. Meanwhile, Fox has chosen to once again offer some counter-programming with the animated release Ferdinand. Two years ago they tried a similar tactic when they debuted the fourth installment of the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise against Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Much like 2015, we're anticipating similar results. When forecasting the opening weekend for Star Wars: The Force Awakens back in 2015 it was a rather monumental task as no...

In this week’s edition of Canon Of Film, we take a look Sidney Lumet‘s hypnotic ‘Murder on the Orient Express‘ just in time for the release of Kenneth Branagh‘s remake of the same name. For the story behind the genesis of the Canon, you can click here.
Murder On The Orient Express (1974)
Director: Sidney Lumet
Screenplay: Paul Dehn based on the novel by Agatha Christie (uncredited)
Strangely, the detective story is actually a fairly newer genre when compared to others, in terms of literary history, it is, and the inventor of the genre is not who you’d think it’d be either, it was Edgar Allen Poe, with his trilogy of C. Auguste Dupin stories, ‘The Murder of the Rue Morgue‘, ‘The Mystery of Marie Roget,’ and my favorite, ‘The Purloined Letter‘ back in the 1840s. I’m not sure why this genre didn’t pick up until then,...

For me, one of the most disappointing aspects of X-Men: Apocalypse was seeing an actor as charismatic and charming as Oscar Isaac buried under layers of makeup that essentially stifled his performance (the script didn't do him any favors, either). Fans were comparing him to Power Rangers villain Ivan Ooze since his earliest reveal, and I don't think the public perception of him ever recovered from there.
Artist Jared Krichevsky (via ComicBook) had a chance to design the character and now he's released some of those alternate designs on his website for us all to see. It's interesting to imagine how and if the movie might have been different had Apocalypse's look been altered, and I have to say, I think I prefer Krichevsky's work to what we ultimately got in the final cut.
During the filming of Days of Future Past I got to take a stab at designing Apocalypse.

What about Natasha?
Scarlett Johansson introduced Black Widow in "Iron Man 2," and she returned in "The Avengers," "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," "Age of Ultron," and the new film "Captain America: Civil War," opening May 6. Black Widow has become a fan favorite character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but if you check out the busy slate for Phase Three, there are movies for Doctor Strange, Thor, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Captain Marvel, plus another Guardians of the Galaxy Movie and two "Avengers: Infinity War" films. But no Black Widow standalone movie.
Since Robert Downey Jr. just hinted that maybe he'd be willing to do a fourth "Iron Man" movie after all, it seems high time to address the bigger question: When is Black Widow going to get a first movie?

Things certainly seem to be changing on the San Diego Comic-Con front. For years, the convention has hosted some of the biggest Hollywood players, who showcased sneak peeks with some of their upcoming features. The illustrious (and infamous) Hall H was where many of these flicks were first showcased to a wide audience. Over the past decade-plus, the con was a mecca for comic/film geeks to go in search of the latest and greatest in comic book movie trailers, clips, and cast/filmmaker appearances.
However, with the internet age upon us, change was inevitable. As leaks made their way online, it was only a matter of time before studios began to pull out of these conventions. Disney was the first to pull out. With their own D23 to showcase their films, they had little need for Comic-Con, and now TheWrap is reporting that 20th Century Fox, the studio that produces X-men and Deadpool,...

It’s a new year, a year where Captain America: Civil War will see Iron Man fight Captain America with Avengers and friends choosing sides while Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice will put the Bat against Superman then throw in Wonder Woman and some Justice League cameos for good measure
All of that is going to be after Deadpool in February, so really it’s just this one month of January that the returning superhero television shows and news of the movies that are to come that we have to use to feed our ever-hungry need for information about stuff we’re about to see.
There was an entertaining Reddit thread from a guy who claimed to have seen a screening of Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice and had been answering people’s questions. I was off having a holiday, so I returned to the internet to buzzing...

I have been visiting Cuba since 2000 when I went there to perfect my Spanish. My Spanish is still far from perfect but I have grown to love Cuba. Since I went there to learn and happened upon the Havana Film Festival which is held this year December 3rd to 13th, I have returned to the Festival every year and have found a world of great talent which increasingly is raring to get out into the world.
Ivan Giroud is a part of that Festival world and actually is now its most important part (aside from the films and filmmakers that is). Starting from zero, he is now considered one of the most qualified specialists in Latin American Cinema.
Read on to see who he is and how he sees Cuban and Latin American Cinema.
How did you get into film?
I was born in Havana in 1957.
I have loved cinema since I was very young. However I did not study film as there was no cinema school in Cuba until 1986.
I had a general education and graduated in Civil
Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Havana in 1981.
I am self-taught in film – what’s that called?
You are an autodidact.
Yes, an autodidact.
In the 70s, Cuba had the best cinema in the world and the best posters as well. These posters remained the finest posters in the world throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s.
Yes, they are silk-screened and on display and for sale. I myself treasure the poster of one o my favorite fims, “Suite Habana” by Fernando Pérez .
In my last year working as a civil engineer I contacted Icaic seeking employment. In 1981 friends in film, like Daisy Granados, the star of “Cecilia” gave me work on her film. I met her husband, Pastor Vega, a filmmaker who was also the first Director of the Festival from 1979 to 1990, a post he took after finishing “Portrait of Teresa” Pastor said ‘Come work with me’ and so in 1988 I entered the industry at the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (Icaic), as a senior specialist and organizer of Cuban and Latin American cinema destined for Europe and North America. The job was like a programming job.
The International Festival of the New Latin American Film in Havana (aka Havana Film Festival) had sections for auteurs, socialist countries, American films and docs. It had the best films, was the preeminent film festival for Latin American cinema and was the only market where all of Latin America gathered to consider the films. It still remains a gathering place for the cineastes throughout Latin America and includes a well-respected coterie of the pioneers of Latin American cinema who created the films that best defined Latin America Cinema in the 60s and then were silenced by the dictatorships which prevailed until the 90s….like Raúl Ruiz, Aldo Francia, Patricio Guzmán and Miguel Littin from Chile, Glauber Rocha, Nelson Pereira dos Santos from Brazil Fernando Solanas and Octavio Getino from Argentina.
At the time of the Soviet collapse in 1991 (known in Cuba as “The Special Period”), I entered the Directorate of the Festival and Vega left and returned to filmmaking. There were other Directors, and in 1994 I became the Director. Alfredo Guevera, the public face of the festival for many years came back to Cuba and became President; we worked together from 1994 to 2010, my first term as the Festival Director.
The Special Period was very, very difficult, the worst of times for everyone and for all Latin American cinema. Brazilian cinema nearly disappeared. The state film organization Embrafilme had been producing 800 films a year and that disappeared for a long time.
Argentina declined in the 90s. Mexico remained active but also declined in the quality of its films. When I began as Director, Cuba was very poor, both economically and creatively. But there was also a generational change and I learned that every decline gives birth to a new generation and new creativity, and so it was.
Schools of films began training new talent. Eictv, the International Film School, funded by Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s Nobel Prize money opened its doors in 1987. New schools opened in Argentina and Brazil as well. The Havana Film Festival stood as a testimony to this growing generation as it showed the first works and shorts of the likes of Trapero and others in whom you could see new Latam talent developing.
The Havana Film Festival catalogs are a history of cinema as it was the biggest programmer of films. It still gives the best view of Latam cinema today. It is still important as it gives a full picture of Latam cinema and the people in Latam cinema. Eictv is producing the most interesting film makers in the world. For 37 years the Festival was the best, though today there are not many Latam fests. This one was different. You could get to know the whole cineaste community. It never lost a generation; the older members still make movies and the festival helps them to be seen and known.
In 2010 I went to Madrid where I spent five years. In 2002 I began working on a Dictionary of Iberoamerican Cinema. This 1,000 page book was finished in 2008. From 2008 to 2010 I was the director of the festival from Spain. I also ran an arthouse theater in Madrid, the Sala Berlanga, named after a very important Spanish director a little younger than Bunuel.
In 2012 I wanted to return to Cuba where I worked on the Cuban Dictionary of Film. In April Guevera died and Icaic pulled me back to be President and Director.
Since May 2013 I have been Director of the Casa del Festival and President of the International Festival of New Cinema in Havana.
What about the filmmaker Pavel Giroud? Is he your brother?
No, he’s my nephew. He came into the business a different way, through design. He began producing music clips and then went to Eictv. From a painter he evolved into a moviemaker. He has made three films. His newest, “El Acompañante” (“The Companion”) won the best project award at San Sebastian’s 2nd Europe-Latin America Co-production Forum in 2013.
This is Giroud’s third solo film after “The Silly Age” and “Omerta”. The producers: Luis Pacheco’s Jaguar Films is Panama’s best-known production/services company. The Cuban producer is Lia Rodriguez who also runs the industry section of the Havana Film Festival. It is also produced by the Cuba/ Panama-based Arete Audiovisual, Panama’s Jaguar Films, Venezuela’s Trampolin Impulso Creativo and France’s Tu Vas Voir (Edgard Tenembaum) who produced Walter Salles’ “The Motorcycle Diaries”.
Set in 1988 Cuba, “The Companion” is about a friendship between a disgraced boxer forced to serve as a warden – in Cuban government jingo-speak, a “companion” – for an HIV victim.
What is different about the current state of your festival?
Now there are many Latin American Film Festivals, but ours was and still is different because it allows you to know the whole cineaste community. We never lost a generation. The older generation still is making movies and the younger generation is very present. The Festival helps make them known.
What about the new developments between USA and Cuba?
That is the most asked question today.
We have always had U.S. films and U.S. citizens have always visited in cultural exchanges. We’ve had Gregory Peck, Jack Lemmon in the earliest years. We’ve invited Arthur Penn, Sean Penn, John Sayles, the Coen Brothers. Danny Glover and Benecio del Toro are frequent visitors. Annette Benning and Koch Hawk of the Academy were guests. We were always well connected to the U.S. independents so that is nothing new.
The change is that It will be easier for Americans to visit and to learn.
When I went to Cuba the first time, I was actually surprised to see so many Afro-Cubans. For some reason I assumed USA was the only nation with former slaves. I should have realized the Spanish also traded in slaves but only when I was in Cuba did I “get” it. Now I see the world so differently.
In Cuba black and white races mixed and the mixture (the mulatto) is what is a Cuban today. U.S. has segregation by and large. Latinos live together, Asian, African-Americans are all separated and that creates a totally different mentality.
I am very interested in African Diaspora films and Cuba has a lot. I have always enjoyed the documentaries. You can’t see them anywhere else.
This year there is a great documentary, “They are We" (“Ellos son nosotros”). It is anthropological about the Cuban town Matanza. Matanza has some of the best music in Cuba. It investigates their African roots in Sierra Leone and identifies ancestors and where they were from. Determined to find the exact origin of songs coming from there, the Australian filmmaker - researcher spent two years showing images throughout the region in Sierra Leonie until he confirmed that the Cubans were singing songs similar to the language of an ethnic group made extinct because of the slave trade.
I’ll send you the BBC article. (Read it here)
Thank you Ivan for this hour of your time. I am so happy to have finally connected with you after seeing you for so many years in Havana and in Toronto (where you stay with Helga Stephenson, the subject of an earlier post: Read it here )
More on Ivan:
Ivan has provided advice to other Latin American film festivals and has collaborated on research projects and screenplays, as well as in the production of theater and classical music. In 2008 he was invited to speak at the seminar Contributions of Latin American cinema to world cinema in the first American Film Congress held in Mexico City in the Congress book stories presented in common 40 years / 50 movies of Latin American cinema, of which he is one of its editors.
He was a visiting professor of the Master in Management of the Film Industry Carlos III University courses in 2010, 2011 and 2012. He is one of four directors of the Dictionary of Latin American Cinema; with Carlos F. Heredero, Eduardo Rodríguez Merchán, Benard da Costa and João project Sgae of Spain, consisting of 10 volumes and 16 thousand entries. Between 2008 and 2012 he was Director of audiovisual programming and Berlanga Room Buñuel Institute Foundation Author of Spain, a period in which he was international adviser Icaic.
Another year, another film festival goes by. The 34th Vancouver International Film Festival was 16 days of intense film watching, as I tried to immerse myself in a fleeting atmosphere celebrating the some of the best of contemporary world cinema. And even though Viff may not boast the prestige or media frenzy of Cannes, Tiff, or Nyff, it does – like almost any film festival does – hold a special place in the mind of this budding cinephile. With over 350 films, it’s necessary to schedule my time according to the best films, generally award winners from previous fests.
But I try to deviate from the known auteurs and films which garnered bouquets of critical praise earlier in the year, because my favourite part of film festivals is nestling into the Pacific Cinematheque or Vancity Theatre at a sparsely populated screening, with the anticipation of seeing what could be a masterpiece or a disaster.

Take a peak around any gaming community these days and you’ll find complaints in abundance about the recent trend of video game remakes/ports to new consoles. I hate to break it to you, but it’s not a new trend. Let’s talk about the history of gaming remakes and why they serve a more important purpose than pissing off people.
These days, hearing about modern remakes (or remastered titles) for current generation consoles feels like a daily thing. Hell, one of the biggest announcements at this year’s E3 was a remake rather than a new title: Final Fantasy VII. While the initial response was positive, it didn’t take long for detractors to start up their battle cry, “What’s with all the remakes anymore? Can’t they make something new?”
Well, yes, of course the companies can make something new and the reality is, they...

Comic book films are full of intricate storytelling. But sometimes, even Batman, Spider-Man & Iron Man need Basil Exposition's help...
This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Age Of Ultron and various other comic book movies - if you're not entirely up to date, then watch out as you read on...
As you know, we're enjoying a golden age of comic book movies and there are around 30 more of them pencilled in before the decade is out. Since Marvel Studios started experimenting with continuity between movies and whole franchises, there's been criticism of its use of MacGuffins and plot exposition - it provokes nightmares of long-winded recaps of already established stuff, starting with dreaded phrases like 'as you know'. And who'd start anything with those three words?
It's not that we're mistaking the use of exposition for poor storytelling - it's a super-broad term to describe something that's kind of essential to most stories.

Sean Connery's last appearance as James Bond, and the last 'unofficial' 007 movie. We revisit Never Say Never Again...
So does this count? Never Say Never Again stirs many arguments by shaking up the official order, splitting fans on the issue of its legitimacy. Ruins pub quiz questions such as ‘How many actors have played M?’ due to the inevitable argument whether Edward Fox should be numbered. Put such issues aside and enjoy what remains: a sly, witty semi-pastiche that doesn’t attempt to recapture past glories but can easily hold its own alongside Diamonds Are Forever and Octopussy. And with much less swimming than Thunderball.
The Villain: Ignore Emilo: Maximillian Largo is his own maniac. Short, tubby, lanky blond hair receding, Largo is Draco Malfoy gone to seed. Easily visualised shuffling around Comic Con, accompanied by Mr Kidd and the reformed Jaws. Yet Largo is one of the film’s strengths.

Choose a side, Marvel fanatics. You might have just survived the Age of Ultron, but a Civil War is brewing, and two founding members of the Avengers are going to be going toe-to-toe in a 2016 blockbuster that drops basically one year from today. It's hard to believe it now, but a decade ago the Marvel Cinematic Universe was merely a twinkle in Kevin Feige's eye. Today, McU offerings are blockbuster staples, with the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and more providing film fans with thundering entertainment and a connected universe culminating in the Avengers movies.
With Age of Ultron on the horizon, we've gone back through the 10 Marvel films to-date to rank them all from worst to best. Read on to find out our verdict, then join the discussion in the comments below.
10. Iron Man 2 (2010)
If Iron Man was a savvy exercise in kick-starting a shared cinematic universe, then its sequel brought everything crashing back down with a sharp, painful thud. Overstuffed with new characters, multiple plot strands and far-too-much in the way of Avengers set-up, Iron Man 2 is a step down from its predecessor in practically every way.

Miracolo!: Monicelli’s Exuberant, Digitally Restored Classic
There hasn’t been a performer that’s come close to equaling the vibrant energy of Italian actress Anna Magnani, that furious powerhouse that graced some of the best works of Rossellini, Visconti, Pasolini, and Renoir and swept her way through English language cinema, winning an Oscar for 1955’s The Rose Tattoo. It’s with great pleasure to discover that Mario Monicelli’s forgotten classic The Passionate Thief was digitally restored last year, playing at the 2014 Telluride Film Festival before being treated to a limited theatrical run this Spring at select theaters. Starring Magnani with her frequent stage collaborator, famed comedian Toto, and a nubile Ben Gazzara, the trio wanders through Rome’s streets one lackluster New Year’s Eve as they stumble through a series of escapades.

Welcome To Issue 76!
If This Is Your First Time Here: Welcome! This is my weekly column where I talk about superhero movie news, rumors and speculation.
This Week: A mostly hack-free column (one link in there, but I get it out of the way quick)! First we update on the Spider-Man deal, then we talk through the plot of Avengers: Age of Ultron assuming the new Lego sets aren't lying to us.
Lots going on in the Marvel Universe this week, or at least the perception that there is a lot going on, because some set visit interviews from Avengers: Age of Ultron solidified some rumored plot developments and a Lego set for the film does what Lego sets do: have us wondering if we’re being sold cool brick guys or being told about the progression of action scenes in the film.
Then, there’s Spider-Man.

When there’s no more room in Hell, the dead will walk the Earth. As Cybermen. See what he did there? The Master is back, and has been working on this plot for Quite a long time. Some old friends return for the fight, we say goodbye (for now, anyway) to some others, and oh goodness, were there still surprises. I don’t know why you’d be reading this recap before you saw the episode, but if you are, don’t. Because it makes much more sense to know about the…
Death In Heaven
By Steven Moffat
Directed by Rachel Talalay
As things rather ended in the moment last week, this week’s adventure starts just the same. Clara, when discovered by the newly minted Cyberman, takes the lessons she’s learned throughout the year and put them to use – she lies through her teeth. She claims to be The Doctor,...

After a series high last week where audiences played at being a Time Lord, complete with all the haunting decisions that stick with you forever, what adventure will our plucky heroes get up to this week? With no real villain* to tie the season together, it’s like getting dressed in the dark as to what theme we’ll be exploring each week is. Will there be ramifications to Clara’s psyche for letting people die on her watch? Will Danny discover her lies? Only time will tell “In the Forest of the Night.” *Obviously Missy is the Big Bad™ (or the Big Red Herring™) but she’s too mysterious to be properly afraid of. She hasn’t even welcomed anyone to “Heaven” in forever. ************ A little girl is running through the forest to an ethereal soundtrack right out of Middle Earth. There are spiderwebs — again? — and I momentarily fear for her mortal safety.

Captain Marvel #7
Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick
Art by Marcio Takara
Colored by Lee Loughridge
Published by Marvel
Even if it’s basically a “bottle issue” set inside Captain Marvel’s ships, Captain Marvel #7 has Kelly Sue DeConnick’s characteristic humorous dialogue and strong characterization mixed with simple, expressive line-work from guest artist Marcio Takara (Boom’s Incredibles comics, The Flash), who also has a gift for visual gags. He also draws quite the unique Rocket Raccoon, whose appearance in this issue is the culmination of a long-running joke in this volume of Captain Marvel. DeConnick and Takara balance the strange, silly, and poignant in a straightforward story that explores Carol’s relationship with past events (fighting the Builders) as well as her new relationships with her alien stowaway Tic and the Guardians of the Galaxy. DeConnick happens to reel off Rocket Raccoon quip after quip by the end of...

Welcome to Issue 53!
Summation: It’s a column about superhero movie news, rumors and speculation.
Today: Hulk Is Going To Space. What’s gonna happen out there?
The Hulk gets shot into space at the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron. I guess I wasn’t expecting this news to break in the calendar year, but we’ve known for a bit over here at Lr headquarters and just been debating when it’s fair to talk about the end of Avengers 2, considering we’re not even past Guardians of the Galaxy yet.
However, that doesn’t mean that I’m not psyched to be able to talk about it.
It’s been a long gauntlet of anyone officially Marvel sanctioned saying Planet Hulk will never happen that we were straight out lying. Then the furious fanboys jumped in to laugh about Latino Review, those crazy guys, what with their nonsense.

The X-Men have been around for more than 50 years. They multiply: rapidly, frequently, endlessly. They aren’t really a superteam like the Justice League or the Avengers, those all-star crews built out of solo-series stars (Superman, Captain America) mixed together with B-list glue characters (Martian Manhunter, Wonder Man). With one very obvious exception and a few other arguable exceptions, the X-Men aren’t Solo-Star people. They are a team.
Or rather, teams. Chris Claremont’s iconic decade-and-a-half run on Uncanny X-Men cemented the idea that the X-lineup was eternally fluid: Characters died, left on sabbatical, joined the Avengers, got replaced...
