Peacock’s movie Genie delivered a solid opening for Peacock during Thanksgiving week — big enough, in fact, to rank as the streamer’s biggest original film to date.
The holiday comedy starring Melissa McCarthy and Paapa Essiedu premiered Nov. 22 on Peacock and drew about 405 million minutes of viewing time over its first five days, according to Nielsen figures (the full streaming top 10 charts for Thanksgiving week will be available later in December). It’s set to rank seventh among movies for that week, which typically sees a number of holiday favorites (a la Home Alone and Elf) re-enter the streaming charts.
The 405 million minutes of watch time for Genie is the equivalent of about 4.35 million complete showings of the 93-minute film (which is the now-codified standard for a “view” of a streaming movie or series).
Genie stars McCarthy as Flora, a genie who’s been trapped for more than 2,000 years inside an antique jewelry box.

Melissa McCarthy is granting all the magical wishes this holiday season.
In the upcoming holiday fairytale comedy, Genie, from Universal and Working Title, Bernard (Paapa Essiedu) enlists genie Flora (McCarthy) to help him win back his family before Christmas.
While Bernard has been busy with work, he doesn’t realize his job, life and family are unraveling around him until it’s too late. As he’s sitting in his New York City apartment alone, trying to figure out how to fix his mistakes, Bernard comes across an antique jewelry box. As he’s dusting it off, he unintentionally releases Flora, a genie trapped for more than 2,000 years inside.
“I need to get my wife and kid to love me again and for us to be happy,” Essiedu can be heard saying to McCarthy in the trailer.

From the pen of “Love Actually” writer-director Richard Curtis comes a new holiday comedy — but this time the magic of the season is literally magic. Premiering on Peacock on Nov. 22, “Genie” follows Melissa McCarthy as Flora, the titular character, who comes to the assistance of a despondent Bernard (Paapa Essiedu). Through their unexpected friendship, the two discover how the power of love can unleash a special holiday magic.
From missing his daughter’s birthday to his wife leaving him to getting fired, Bernard is in need of a genie for several reasons. Luckily for him, he stumbles upon a jewelry box and unintentionally releases the genie Flora, who can grant unlimited wishes. Flora has been trapped in that box for over 2,000 years due to a misunderstanding with a sorcerer in 77 B.C., so Bernard begins to show her the world she has been missing. Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray deliver a soft-focus view of a Manhattan that now almost seems like a dream
Dir: Sofia Coppola. U.S. 2020. 96 mins
Nostalgia is a dangerous temptation, but Sofia Coppola’s comedy On the Rocks, premiering at the New York Film Festival, makes it easy to surrender to. Spun mostly of sugar and air, this film is a lightweight, but mostly sweet, treat – and a lovely reminder of when pictures could just be low-key amusements, and the pandemic hadn’t yet turned cities into ghost towns.

While interest swirled around the film before its first P+I screening in Toronto on September 11, it took longer to close than observers had expected. HBO hailed the “historic sale” as a record-breaker, however despite the lofty claim they declined to confirm the amount to Screen at time of writing. Few days ago we reported that Jesse Peretz’s upcoming comedy titled My Idiot Brother is currently filming in New York.
This project already includes pretty interesting cast: Hugh Dancy, Kathryn Hahn, Shirley Knight, Janet Montgomery, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Rashida Jones, Adam Scott and Emily Mortimer.
But today, we’re here to add another name to this list, because Steve Coogan has signed on to co-star in this comedy as well…
The film, already described as “a comedy about family and the sacrifices it takes to deal with them” revolves around struggling idealist (Rudd) that stays at the homes of his three more successful and ambitious sisters (Banks, Deschanel, Mortimer) and brings truth, happiness and a sunny disposition into their lives.
He wreaks havoc, while dealing with their overbearing mother. The mother was the last major part to be cast and she will be played by Shirley Knight.
