Biden Tells Netanyahu: U.S. Won’t Support Retaliatory Strike on Iran. But Some Republicans Want One.
President Joe Biden urged Israel not to launch a counter-strike against Iran, telling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the U.S. will not participate in one. Iran on Saturday launched drones and missiles to attack Israel — most of which were intercepted by forces from the U.S., Israel, and other countries in the region.
In a phone call with Netanyahu late Saturday, Biden told Netanyahu, “You got a win. Take the win,” according to a senior U.S. official who spoke with Axios. Biden further told Netanyahu that the U.

The breakout star of Love Lies Bleeding, Katy O’Brian, is also seeing her fair share of franchise roles. Prior to her latest A24 movie, O’Brian has played parts in projects for Disney like The Mandalorian and Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. She will also be seen in the upcoming Twisters, where she says, “We filmed a tornado movie during tornado season in Tornado Alley.” She would reveal that her character is “a little sillier” than she has been used to, but she won’t go as far as to call it a comic relief role. “I don’t want to say comedic role, and then everyone’s like, ‘She wasn’t funny.’ We’ll say it’s silly and fun.”
Now, according to Deadline, O’Brian is joining the cast of Mission: Impossible 8 as filming continues underway for the Tom Cruise action film. Details surrounding the upcoming...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Dan Baker on Wbgr-fm (Monroe, Wisconsin) on March 21st, 2024, reviewing the new streaming series “Manhunt” – based on the bestseller by James L. Swanson – currently streaming on Apple TV+.
The Civil War has just ended, and Abraham Lincoln (Hamish Linklater) is taking in a play with his wife Mary (Lily Taylor) at Ford’s Theater. On a big laugh line, John Wilkes Booth (Anthony Boyle) … a Southern sympathizer and actor by profession … shoots Lincoln dead and manages to escape Washington before Secretary of Defense Edwin M. Stanton (Tobias Menzies) can shut down the city’s borders. The “Manhunt” is on, even with Booth hobbling on a broken leg.

Missed Monday’s late-night monologues? We’ve got you covered with our round-up of the night’s best laughs from across the dial.
Wannabe Trump-tator
With Donald Trump now the lone Republican candidate left in the presidential race, late-night hosts are leaping to keep the former President’s most alarming statements in the public eye by amplifying some of Trump’s most disqualifying statements when it comes to holding the highest office in the land.
Armed with recent quotes from Trump administration officials like former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper relating how Trump inquired about ordering the National Guard to shoot Black Lives Matter protesters, Jon Stewart interpreted Trump’s position on the Constitution as, “Well, there can still be freedom to assemble. The assembly’d just be more of a pile.”
[On Trump’s claim to ‘absolute immunity’ with regard to his actions while in office, including theoretically murdering political enemies] “I don’t want to be a nitpicker, but I do not remember the assassination episode of Schoolhouse Rock.

Last year, the Pentagon failed its sixth annual audit in a row. An Arizona lawmaker has a proposal for how to help the Department of Defense finally pass one: Use AI.
On Friday, Rep. David Schweikert (R-Ariz.) introduced legislation that would direct the Secretary of Defense to use artificial intelligence technology to audit the Pentagon’s financial statements for the current fiscal year.
With assets worth $3.8 trillion and a 2024 budget of around $850 billion, the Defense Department is the largest and most well-funded part of the federal government. It has...

Five years have gone by since Tom Cruise announced that Paramount Pictures had given the greenlight to two more Mission: Impossible movies, with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) writer/director Christopher McQuarrie returning to the helm. At one point, we thought these movies were going to carry the titles Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two… but Paramount is backtracking from that decision. After Dead Reckoning Part One underwhelmed at the box office when it was released last year, the studio has dropped Part One from the subtitle and has let it be known that the next film, which is still in production, will have a different title. A decision they really should have made before releasing the first half of the story. At least we’re still getting the second half of the story, with the...

Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper is joining CNN as global affairs analyst and political commentator.
Shortly after the 2020 presidential election, then-President Donald Trump fired Esper, part of the upheaval in the administration as Trump refused to concede the election. Esper served from July 2019 to November, 2020, a period that included his opposition to sending U.S. troops to control protests in major cities following the killing of George Floyd. In an interview with The New York Times in 2022, as he was publishing a book on his time in the administration, Esper said of Trump, “He is an unprincipled person who, given his self-interest, should not be in the position of public service.”
Before he became the Secretary of Defense, Esper was secretary of the Army. He is currently partner and board member at the venture capital firm Red Cell Partners.
CNN also announced that Leah Wright Rigueur would join the network as an on-air contributor.

On Jan. 29, 1964, a triple premiere — in New York, London and Toronto — launched one of Stanley Kubrick’s signature masterpieces into the chilly Cold War atmosphere: Dr. Strangelove, with the marquee-challenging subtitle Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb. Kubrick described it as a “nightmare comedy.” Sixty years later, the comedy still works, but the immediacy of the nightmare may be missed.
Shot in Shepperton Studios outside of London from February through November 1963, Dr. Strangelove was conceived and realized in the shadow of a real-life nightmare scenario that no one laughed at: the Cuban Missile Crisis, which unfolded over 13 terrifying days in October 1962.
On Oct. 14, 1962, a U-2 spy plane detected facilities for the launching of nuclear ballistic missiles from Cuba, a Soviet client state since 1959. President John F. Kennedy convened an executive committee of the National Security Council to consider options. The consensus from the Joint Chiefs...

The Republican Accountability Pac has created a new ad that calls Donald Trump a “dictator.”
The ad, called “Dictator Donald,” was produced by a Republican group that stands opposed to Trump.
The “Dictator Donald” was posted on YouTube over two weeks after Trump announced that he wanted to be a dictator on “the first day” of a new Trump administration.
The ad warns Americans in the starkest terms about a second Trump term.
The ad starts with a recording of an alarm clock going off at 6:00 a.m.
Next, the ad shows a clip of former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) shown inside an old TV, warning Americans during an interview.
“This isn’t hyperbole,” she claimed. “A vote for Donald Trump may mean the last election that you ever get to vote in.”
“He’s a threat to democracy,” Trump’s Secretary of Defense Mark Esper states in another clip.

Donald Trump’s plans to give himself sweeping powers on “day one” of a new administration include sending vast numbers of U.S. troops — potentially “hundreds of thousands” — to close the southern border and to help build a new network of immigrant detention camps, three people familiar with the situation tell Rolling Stone.
Trump and some of his lieutenants have repeatedly stated that any second administration must treat migrant crossings as a “war” on American soil. During Trump’s first term, officials and attorneys had thwarted similar plans for a...

In “Downwind,” a documentary executive produced by Matthew Modine, directors Mark Shapiro and Douglas Brian Miller chronicle the lethal effects that nuclear testing on American soil has had on U.S. citizens.
The Oscar hopeful reveals that from 1951 to 1992, Mercury, Nevada, was the site for the testing of 928 large scale nuclear weapons. Wind dispersed radioactive fallout from those atmospheric blasts (mushroom clouds) and underground testing (venting) in a seemingly unpredictable manner to people living “downwind.” The United States Department of Justice defines “downwinders,” also known as lab rats, as human beings who live in counties located downwind from Nevada Test Site in the states of Utah, Nevada and Arizona.
The film explains that the radiation led to various diseases, mainly cancer. Shapiro and Miller also highlight how Hollywood star John Wayne and numerous members of the cast and crew of the 1956 movie “The Conqueror” died, arguably, of cancer due to...

Peter White, known for his role as attorney Lincoln (Linc) Tyler on soap opera “All My Children” and for his role onstage and on screen in “The Boys in the Band,” died of melanoma at his home in Los Angeles on Nov. 1. He was 86.

The actor, a graduate of Northwestern and the Yale School of Drama, got his first major acting role as an understudy for Robert Redford in the Broadway production of “Barefoot in the Park” along Myrna Loy. That role formally introduced White to the world of Broadway.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken was repeatedly interrupted at a Senate hearing today by about a dozen protesters opposed to Israel’s actions in Gaza.
The demonstrators, some of whom chanted “ceasefire now” and “no Gaza genocide,” were escorted or dragged out of the hearing by Capitol Police.
On CNN, which was carrying the hearing live, one woman was seen standing up behind Blinken with the sign, “ceasefire in Gaza.” Others in the crowd had painted their hands red to represent blood and held them up during the hearing.
“I appreciate that people feel passionately about these issues. I would ask that you respect our witnesses and our committee members and allow the American people to hear their testimony. We will pause until the room is clear,” said Sen. Patti Murray (D-wa), the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee.
Blinken was interrupted again by another demonstrator, and then by a larger group.

Former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper spoke out against Donald Trump and other Washington Republicans, urging for greater support for Ukraine as its war with Russia continues.
When asked by CBS’ Margaret Brennan what he thinks Americans should expect of U.S. foreign policy if Trump is elected in 2024, Esper responded, “I suspect that he will do what he says.”
“He will somehow attempt to negotiate a deal between Russia and Ukraine, and that won’t fly,” Esper continued. “There’s only one person that can end this conflict in Ukraine, and that’s Vladimir Putin, and he’s not about to do that anytime soon.”
Trump has frequently voiced concern that the U.S. is spending too much time and money on assisting Ukraine. He has also stated that, if elected for a second term, he would have the power to end the war “within 24 hours.”

Most people don’t get a text from Bono in the middle of the night.
But Jon Kamen, the CEO, chairman and co-founder of RadicalMedia, found himself fighting off jet lag on a recent business trip to Japan as he fielded messages from the U2 frontman. That pair had worked together on the One campaign, the musician’s push to eradicate AIDS and poverty in Africa, and this time Bono needed help launching ticketing for the band’s upcoming residency at Las Vegas’ newly launched venue, the Sphere. Kamen assured him that there was someone on staff who could help him.

Chaos has been the norm in Congress for some time now, but this week a truly noisome stench is looming over the Capitol as Republicans prepare to shut down the government.
At its core, a shutdown is a failure of Congress to accomplish its most essential legislative task: funding the government. If Congress doesn’t pass any of these bills before established fiscal deadlines, the agencies affected are legally not allowed to operate...

Oscar-winning filmmaker Errol Morris unveiled his new documentary The Pigeon Tunnel – about the spy-turned-novelist David Cornwell, aka John le Carré – at the Telluride Film Festival on Friday. Audience buzz afterwards ranked it among Morris’s best work, a canon that includes the classics The Thin Blue Line and Gates of Heaven.
Morris said it took years for The Pigeon Tunnel to be completed. But during a Q&a, he referenced a different endeavor that apparently isn’t fated to come together – a nascent documentary project on former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. On Fox News Sunday, Cotton was asked about Republicans in the House on Thursday adding several controversial amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act, including one that would nix the Pentagon’s policy of reimbursing service members for the travel costs incurred to obtain an abortion.

Ape vs. Mecha Ape opens with a chemical weapons plant that looks like an old warehouse being attacked by what looks like the giant ape Abraham. A few explosions later we see that it’s actually a giant, well-armed, robot which makes short work of the plant’s security.

On March 14, 2022, a Fox News crew reporting in Ukraine came under fire from a barrage of Russian missiles. The cameraman, Pierre Zakrzewski, and a local journalist who was working as their translater and fixer, Oleksandra “Sasha” Kuvshynova, were killed in the attack.
The correspondent, Benjamin Hall, survived, albeit barely. He lost one leg and the foot on his other leg, he lost the use of one of his hands, and shrapnel cost him one of his eyes.
His survival, and the astonishing effort to get him out of Ukraine and back to the U.S. for medical attention, is the subject of a new book by the journalist, Saved.
The story is at times something out of a spy novel, with Hall and his team breaking Kyiv’s curfew to catch a train carrying Poland’s Prime Minister, a train which would ultimately get him out of the country; and...

“The Terminal List,” based on Jack Carr’s thriller novels, premiered in its entirety on July 1; Season 2 will adapt 2019’s “True Believer.”
“The phenomenal summer debut of ‘The Terminal List’ is a testament to the creativity of Jack Carr, David Digilio and Chris Pratt along with the cast and teams who delivered such an original and compelling series,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon and MGM Studios, said in a statement on Friday. “With the second season of The ‘Terminal List’ and Prime Video’s new prequel series starring the amazing Taylor Kitsch, we are expanding on the storytelling and characters beloved by so many all over the world.

A couple of years ago, when it was announced that FX was doing an American Crime Story season on Monica Lewinsky, there was a wave of nonsensical concern that if the series came out during the 2020 election cycle, it might have some sort of impact.
If there’s been any similar rending of garments about HBO releasing Year One: A Political Odyssey in the middle of a midterm election cycle, I haven’t heard it. This speaks in part to the dilution of the HBO documentary brand, which used to be one of the industry’s gold standards and now simply seems to encompass whatever nonfiction programming — some still tremendous, it must be said — HBO is releasing at a rate of two or three docs or docuseries per week.

HBO debuted the trailer for Year One: A Political Odyssey, which examines President Joe Biden’s first year in office, with what the premium network calls a “rare glimpse into the inner working of the White House.”
A standout moment from the trailer is via Secretary of State Antony Blinken, talking about the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. “President [Ashraf] Ghani said to me on the phone, ‘I will stay and fight to the death. he fled the country the next day,” Blinken says, underscoring the extent to which the administration was taken by surprise as the country so quickly fell to the Taliban.
But other moments suggest that key figures learned from Afghanistan and sought to get ahead of the Russian threat to Ukraine, as Biden built alliances that were in place when Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion.

Harnessing the power afforded an Oscar winner, let alone someone with two little gold men on their mantel, is a delicate endeavor. On the one hand, an Academy Award is forever. It’s an honor that becomes an honorific — attached to your name from the moment it’s won until well after it can’t be attained again. But despite its seemingly timeless distinction, an Oscar can still fade along with the star it’s tied to — becoming a descriptor in name only, without the capacity to command the attention it once did.
Hilary Swank, a two-time winner of the film world’s top prize, and Tom McCarthy, a three-time nominee who took home the trophy once himself, are in no danger of losing the respect earned from works like “Boys Don’t Cry,” “Million Dollar Baby,” and “Logan Lucky,” as well as “Spotlight,” “Up,” “The Visitor,” and “The Station Agent.

Chris Cuomo debuted his new NewsNation show on Monday with a pledge that his nightly hour “won’t be typical.”
Cuomo, who was fired from his CNN primetime show in December, also said that he had “learned lessons good and bad” since then.
“I’ve relied on my friends, my family, my therapist, and thankfully, it’s been the case that what doesn’t kill us, does make us stronger,” Cuomo said in an extended, 15-minute opener. “I’ve been humbled by what happened but I am also hungry to do better in a way that I have never done before. So this show is going to be different from what I have done in the past because I’m different.”
His pitch to viewers was that too much of the national conversation is being framed as left or right, especially in media, when the “extremes are not America’s majority.

Eric Kripke continues to pull in his Supernatural friends to fill out Prime Video’s The Boys, with Jeffrey Dean Morgan being the latest Supernatural veteran to sign up for the incredibly twisted, comic book-inspired series. There hasn’t been any official confirmation of who Morgan will play, however, he did tweet out his excitement over being a part of the mini-Supernatural reunion.

Updated, with latest: A number of lawmakers, including Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fl) and Rep. Mo Brooks (R-al), sought presidential pardons after January 6th, according to testimony before the committee’s hearing on Thursday.

The committee showed text of a January 11 email in which Brooks was seeking pardons to “every congressman and senator who vote to reject the electoral college vote submissions of Arizona and Pennsylvania.” Gaetz was included in Brooks’ request for a pardon.
In videotaped testimony, Cassidy Hutchinson, aide to then-chief of staff Mark Meadows, talked of pardons sought by other lawmakers, including Andy Biggs, Scott Perry and Louie Gohmert. She said that Rep. Jim Jordan (R-oh) “talked about congressional pardons, but he never asked me for one.”

Roger Brown, who terrorized a generation of pro and college football players as one of the most prolific defensive tackles in history, has died at age 84. No cause of death was given by his family, which confirmed his death.
A six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle, Brown played seven seasons for the Detroit Lions, then was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in 1967. He replaced Rosey Grier as part of the legendary “Fearsome Foursome” on the Rams, a defensive line that featured Deacon Jones, Lamar Lundy and Merlin Olsen. He made an instant impact and again became a Pro Bowler with the Rams.
Brown was drafted by the Lions out of Maryland Eastern Shore in the fourth round in the 1960 draft. He made the Pro Bowl every year from 1962 to 1966. He most notably had seven sacks of Green Bay quarterback Bart Starr in one game, including one for a safety.
