Austrian Christian Berger won the American Society of Cinematographers' feature competition for "The White Ribbon" during the 24th Annual ASC Outstanding Achievement Awards at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza on Saturday.
The other nominees in the feature film category -- which along with "The White Ribbon" are also up for Oscars in cinematography -- are Barry Ackroyd for "The Hurt Locker," Mauro Fiore for "Avatar" and Robert Richardson for "Inglourious Basterds." "Nine," photographed by Dion Beebe, rounded out the Asc feature nominees.
Commenting on the range of looks and approaches to this year's nominated films, Berger said backstage: "It was quite good to have that contrast ... to see what is photography today in cinema -- or what will be the future."

It’s January 15, 2010, when this scribe arrives to the snowy set of executive producer Greg. H Sims’ psycho-thriller Behind Your Eyes. Shooting for 14 days on location in Lake Arrowhead, CA (with additional days in and around the nearby environs of Los Angeles) and written by Daniel Fanaberia, the flick revolves around ‘A couple. A kidnapping. A secret. A weekend to meet the parents becomes a weekend of trying to stay alive for perfect Steven and Erika’ (according to the production’s PR).
The film stars Tom (Puppetmaster: Axis of Evil) Sandoval and Swedish actress Frida Farrell as the unlucky duo. Writer Fanaberia and actors Remy O’Neil, Lisa R. Segal, and Arthur Roberts round out the film’s cast.
The first in-house feature for new production and distribution entity Vesuvio Entertainment Corporation, of which Sims is CEO, Behind Your Eyes is being helmed by Clint Lien (he previously worked as...

Chicago – If you’re like me, you forgot how totally weird the cult horror classic “The Toolbox Murders” actually is. Perhaps the dull, by-the-numbers Tobe Hooper remake (with the otherwise great Angela Bettis from “May”) warped our minds, but this is a trippy slasher film, a notable entry in the slasher genre now available in glorious B-movie High-Def for the first time.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
Reportedly based on a true story (aren’t they all?), “The Toolbox Murders” caused quite a stink in 1978 when it was released. It’s not that graphically violent, but it is easy to see what turned people off in a film that, for almost the entirety of its first act, consists of intercut shots of a power tool and a screaming woman being murdered by said tool. Watching a woman masturbate before being killed by a masked man with a nail gun is not for everyone.

Chicago – It truly has been a year for science fiction like no other. Think about this for a moment: “Star Trek,” “District 9,” and “Avatar” are all very possible candidates for the Academy Award for Best Picture. The wave of quality genre product has even allowed for one of the best science fiction films of not just the year but the decade to go tragically underrated in Duncan Jones’ spectacular debut “Moon,” now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
Sam Rockwell gives the best performance of his spectacular career in “Moon,” delivering what is essentially a one-man show. Rockwell plays Sam Bell, a worker on the other side of the moon in a future where that location happens to be the source of the solution to our energy crisis. Bell mines the source and spends most of his time talking to a robot (voiced by Kevin Spacey) and sending...

Those complaining about the practically de-fanged, glittery vampires in Twilight may find their bloodsucking saviors in Daybreakers. Of course, the irony is that those same redeemers would immediately drain the blood from the horror fans' bodies, leaving their heads if they're feeling friendly (which they're probably not). These creatures aren’t sweet, conflicted objects of affection for teen girls; they’re violent, heartless monsters who see humans as sources of food, not love interests. Bram Stoker can now rest easy in his grave again.
This sci-fi horror film takes the traditional vampire narrative of inhuman, blood-hungry creatures and adds a futuristic twist. Rather than positioning the undead as the other a la True Blood, Interview with the Vampire, and numerous other vampire tales, Daybreakers is set in a world where the vampires have won. Small groups of humans have survived a plague that turned most of Earth's population into vampires,...

We've all heard about films sometimes being really hard to make. The conditions director Adam Green made his upcoming film Frozen under were nothing short of psychotic. Dread Central received a Q&A with Green in which he sheds a lot of light on this chilly new project!
Frozen starring Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell, and Kevin Zegers makes its debut at Sundance 2010 and will then be playing in select theatres on February 5th courtesy of Anchor Bay Films.
Why did you want to make Frozen?
While I can never predict what my ideas will be or where they will come from, as soon as I had the basic beats of the story and the characters for Frozen, I knew it had to be the film I made next. The concept of being left behind on a ski lift really struck a chord with anyone I brought it up to, and...

With fashion designer Tom Ford at the helm, A Single Man promises plenty of style in both its sumptuous cinematography and perfectly created period costumes. But the surprise in this '60s-set drama isn't its beauty; it's the substance beneath its oh-so fashionable surface.
Based on a novel by Christopher Isherwood, A Single Man is an exploration of grief, forbidden love, and moving on after tragedy. It's set in a very specific moment — 1962 Los Angeles — and tells the story of an experience that is at once highly individual and entirely universal. This drama follows British professor George (Colin Firth, Easy Virtue) months after the death of his longtime lover, Jim (Matthew Goode, Watchmen). Though George is buoyed by his friendship with his neighbor Charley (Julianne Moore, Blindness), he struggles to find solace as he goes about his daily life as a university professor. He flashes back to moments in his...

Nine begins with hips swaying in silhouette as the overture introduces the lovely women who both distract and drive master director Guido Contini (master actor Daniel Day-Lewis). From his sultry sexpot mistress Carla (Penelope Cruz) to his prim, Audrey-Hepburn-esque wife Luisa (Marion Cotillard), the bevy of beauties enter a scaffolding-filled set in Guido's mind. The director is struggling with his next project, but his lack of inspiration is suffered by the movie itself as well. Nine may be a frothy, flashy film filled with Hollywood's top talent, but it never quite achieves the heights its pedigree promises.
The film's biggest asset is clearly its cast. Day-Lewis, Cruz, and Cotillard would be enough for any normal film, but Nine greedily adds Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Stacy Ferguson, and the grand donna of Italian cinema, Sophia Loren. A regular conversation that occurs between me and my blog buddies is how Martin Campbell, the director of The Green Lantern, plans to tackle the production of one of the most unique comic book adaptations ever. For those who are unaware the look and style of Gl is that of Iron Man meets Star Trek in terms of tone and action (it spends time between space and Earth) but there is the fantasy elements that put it as sort of a Lord of the Rings in space thus giving it that uniqueness that most other comic book adaptation don’t have.
Even though Martin Campbell is the director he has to rely on very talented members of the production to create and design these worlds. Well now Superhero Hype is reporting that many of the key crew members that are already on board, and there’s no lack of Oscars among them.

In addition to highlighting their individual roles, the segment showcases the detail that went into every aspect of George Clooney's character Ryan Bingham's life. Two eagerly awaited films will appear at Christmas and year's end; Ragnar Bragason's Mr. Bjarnfredarson and Fridrik Thor Fridriksson's Mamma Gogo. The former, a culmination of Iceland's most popular TV series ever, The Night Shift, The Day Shift and The Prison Shift, stars Jon Gnarr, Petur Jóhann Sigfusson and Jorundur Ragnarsson. Mr. Bjarnfredarson is a darkly comic redemption story spanning almost fifty years, with emphasis on Georg (Gnarr), an over educated know-it-all, that has just been released from jail, but is still a prisoner of his own past. - Iceland Film Scene – Local: Business: As the year comes to an end, the local scene has been quiet on the surface, but behind the curtains the filmmaking community has been lobbying the authorities to reduce the drastic proposed 34% cut for film funding in the 2010 budget, a measure set to turn the industry upside down. The post-apocalyptic drama The Road begins with shots of barking dogs, blooming flowers, and nuzzling horses, but it is soon revealed that these everyday pleasures are fading memories for its protagonists. With a palette of grays and browns, it quickly shifts to the leafless trees and broken ground of a wasteland that has only barely survived an unnamed catastrophe. The world smolders when it doesn't all-out burn, and the vestiges of humanity struggle to survive and retain the things that made them human.
Amid bands of roving cannibals, an unnamed father (Viggo Mortensen, Eastern Promises) and his son (Kodi Smit-McPhee, Romulus, My Father) have left their home behind and are traveling toward the coast with hopes that the warmer weather and proximity to the ocean will provide a haven. The Man remembers the world before, but The Boy was born to The Man's wife (Charlize Theron, Hancock) after the apocalypse.

I was fortunate enough to meet Electra Avellan at the Spooky Empire convention in Orlando, Florida recently, and she was kind enough to talk with me about her career, inspirations, favorite movies and actors, and also what it's like to be a part of one of the most famous film families working in cinema today.
Jason Anders/Fangoria: So let's talk about the new film you will be appearing in, Machete, which will be directed by Robert Rodriguez; the film is based on the fake movie trailer of the same name from the Grindhouse feature film, and will star Danny Trejo supported by an all-star cast. What can you tell me about the production of this film, and also, what is it like working with family members such as Robert and your sister Elise on set?
Electra Avellan: I can't talk much about the production of the film. Not yet.

It’s one of the more complicated scenes to capture in the new Clive Barker film Dread. Actors Jackson (Twilight) Rathbone and Hanne Steen must play slightly drunk while getting hot and heavy during a romantic date in the countryside. At one point, they climb onto the hood of their car and release back into the wild a once-injured crow Rathbone’s character has rescued. Except the crow isn’t playing ball.
Director of photography Sam McCurdy (of the Descent duo) is perched on a crane, ready to move upward with the bird as it hopefully flies toward the camera. The crow wrangler has assured everyone this will happen. But it persistently doesn’t, and continually resetting the shot is getting very time-consuming and patience-testing—especially as writer/director Anthony Diblasi only has 28 days to shoot this adaptation of Barker’s acclaimed Books Of Blood short story during a cold November.

The Men Who Stare at Goats Directed by Grant Heslov According to Jon Ronson's book The Men Who Stare At Goats, the U.S. government has experimented with various extra-sensory ‘abilities,’ such as remote-viewing and mind control, since the 1950s. These highly classified sub-divisions of the Army were developed in the hopes of creating a different kind of warrior, one who could harness mental abilities to destroy his adversary. Although many of these divisions were kept under wraps, journalist Ronson (known as Bob Wilton in the film) got wind of a low-profile Army project after having met Jim Channon, the former colonel who wrote a manual for the creation of the ‘First Earth Battalion,’ an army unit to based upon New Age principals. The book, which inspired the film, charts the absurd journey that began with this chance encounter. It contains a wild, often questionable, but ultimately fascinating story of introspection and destiny.

Amelia is the much anticipated film of the pioneering aviatrix, Amelia Earhart, who was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. This new, historical biopic from director Mira Nair (The Namesake, Vanity Fair), stars two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank as the legendary pilot (she also serves as executive producer), Richard Gere as her husband and agent/publisher, George Putnam, and Ewan McGregor as Twa founder and Earhart’s lover, Gene Vidal (Gore Vidal’s father). From a screenplay by Ronald Bass (Academy Award winner for Rain Man) and Anna Hamilton Phelan, based on the books “East to the Dawn” by Susan Butler and “The Sound of Wings by Mary S. Lovell,” Amelia chronicles the life of Earhart from her early life in Kansas, the first flight across the Atlantic, and Putnam’s attempt to make her a female Lindbergh through product placement. The film also covers her...

The guys who are putting together the "zero budget" indie film Patrol Men in the UK definitely seem to be doing things the right way. From the over 40(!) locations they've used for the flick to their fresh approach to the soundtrack (read more on that here), they are pouring their hearts and souls into the project. And today they've provided Dread Central with an exclusive first look at their brand new theatrical poster.
Director of Photography Louis Corallo designed the poster, which gives off a great retro vibe and promises us that "Bad Things Will Happen". Along with that, David Campion (co-director with Ben Simpson) sent along a piece of highly edited concept art. Be sure to click each to see them bigger and in more detail.
Campion also gave a brief update on the film's progress in post: "The film itself is looking good; however, on the 21st November,...

Poor Daniel Myrick. After all but setting the world on fire a decade ago with The Blair Witch Project (co-directed with Eduardo Sanchez), a film that managed to grab headlines in the summer of The Matrix, Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, and The Sixth Sense, he returns now with The Objective, a film that is split by two opposing instincts: recapturing the glory of his initial success and expanding his vision to a scope that would suggest he’s ready to move on to a studio feature. Neither instinct is satisfied by either the film’s plotline or its execution, leaving us to wonder what movie he really wanted to make.

***Scroll down for zoom photos and poll*** Her 'Mad Men' costar Christina Hendricks is the one known for her unreal curves, but January Jones' GQ shoot has people talking about her assets as well. The November covergirl looks surprisingly voluptuous in an open leather jacket, leading some to wonder whether the cover shot is just another Photoshop creation. GQ has been quick to deflect the buzz with a blog post entitled "Yes They're Real. And They're Spectacular." Director of Photography Dora Somosi said: People think that a person will look the same in every photograph, but that just doesn't happen. You can have two pictures in the same light, same clothes, same setting, and just a couple of seconds of difference, just the way you move your hands or the way you hold your neck, will change how your body looks. Also, she's...

Oh look, it's January Jones and her rack again. The latest GQ cover got a lot of people around the Internet talking about how the petite Mad Men actress's breasts appear Photoshopped. (What if there was no Internet; where would we have such important conversations?) Now the men's mag has decided to respond to this very muted uproar. GQ's Director of Photography Dora Somosi blogs that the breasts in question are in fact very real and spectacular. "People think that a person will look the same in every photograph, but that just doesn't happen," Dora writes. Last month at Vampire-Con in L.A., Fango's Pat Jankiewicz reported on a special presentation (read it here) of a new music video for G Tom Mac's famous Lost Boys anthem, "Cry Little Sister."
Tonight, Fango heard from Gerard McMann (aka G Tom Mac) with said video in tow. Inspired by (and used for) HBO's hit series True Blood, "Cry Little Sister (Swamp Version)" is a fresh and bluesy take on the song, and you can check out the full clip below the jump.
Starting Monday, September 14, the track will be available as a digital single via iTunes and CD Baby. The video was helmed by Anthony Cappello with Paolo Cascio as the Director of Photography, and was edited by Phillip Lindsey & Daniela Pistone.
True Blood will air it's season finale tomorrow night on HBO. From some fresh comments from the cast, click here!

Nazis are back in fashion! Well, in the movies, anyway. For a while it seemed like Second World War movies were history, but there are signs of an upsurge in this sub-genre. And we're not talking Saving Private Ryan or The Thin Red Line here. Filmmakers are suddenly taking the war not quite so seriously again. Currently Inglorious Bastards is getting bums on theatre seats and Tarantino's latest is following in the jackboot steps of Tom Cruise's thriller Valkyrie. Elsewhere on this site, you will find coverage of Iron Sky, a Second World War sci-fi comedy that is on the way from the makers of the Star Wreck series of Star Trek spoofs.

Read Part 1 of our interview right here.
[Spoiler Warning - This interview does contain discussion of the film's kills and plot. Be warned!]
There's a lot to like about Stewart Hendler's breezy and bloody Sorority Row. Sharp-eared viewers will notice the Sorority is located at Rosman College--named after writer/director Mark Rosman, who made the original House On Sorority Row. "Of course," smiles Hendler. "It's only right that we pay tribute to the guy who started it all!"
While it delivers the scares, Row is frequently laugh out loud funny and surreal. Case in point: The movie also has the jaw-dropping sight of Star Wars' Princess Leia, acclaimed actress/writer Carrie Fisher, chasing the killer with a double-barrelled shotgun!
Fango: Carrie Fisher is great as the alcoholic House Mother...How the hell did you get her to do it?
Stewart Hendler: "I lucked out, that's how I got Carrie Fisher. She was obviously the easy first choice for us...I mean, come on,...

You may not have heard of The 4th Reich yet, but soon you’ll be hearing much more along with news of the film’s director, Shaun Robert Smith.
The film, which begins production in April, is the first feature film from Smith, whose short film The Soldier displayed an excellent knack of cinematography and suspense.
It also won a small boatload of awards and gained a national theatrical release in the UK.
You can watch The Soldier here.
The short film forms a sort of foundation for The 4th Reich.
From the official synopsis for the film:
June 1944, after the glorious victory on D-day, the armies of the combined allied forces begin their long push to Berlin with the aim of bringing down Hitler and the despised Nazi regime of the Third Reich.
But buried deep in secret files German Reichstag, is the chilling reality of Hitler’s plan...

A Number of rumours recently emerged regarding the big-screen adaptation of Tolkien's The Hobbit, to be directed by Guillermo del Toro and produced by Peter Jackson.
The film was at one time going to be followed by a 'bridge movie' to fill in the undocumented years between the end of The Hobbit and the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
But then it was decided to abandon the bridge film and instead split The Hobbit into two movies.
However, MarketSaw then heard from a source that the project would be filmed in 3D and that there would be three movies - the two-part Hobbit Plus the bridge film. Furthermore, this third segment would be directed by Peter Jackson.
There's also been talk online that Tom Cruise, Doctor Who actor David Tennant or Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe would play the lead role of Bilbo Baggins.

Remember that rumor from a few weeks ago that The Hobbit might end up being shot in 3D? Yea, it's not true. That's why it was a rumor - it was a bit hard to believe. Our friends at TheOneRing.net put in an e-mail with the big man himself, Guillermo del Toro, and got confirmation that they are not pursuing 3D on The Hobbit. After getting that out of the way, GdT did also confirm that they're hiring Oscar winner Guillermo Navarro (of Pan's Labyrinth, Night at the Museum, Hellboy II) as the Director of Photography of Hobbit. He also drops a juicy tidbit about James Cameron's Avatar, to keep news on that going this week as well. Most of these updates and quotes come from the actual forums on Torn where Guillermo posts regularly. Here's his statements on the 3D rumors, which put any speculation to rest...
