“Paris, 13th District” is the latest picture from acclaimed director Jacques Audiard, known for such award-winning films as “A Prophet” and “Rust and Bone.” In his latest, Audiard teams up with “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” writer Céline Sciamma and fellow French screenwriter Léa Mysius to tell the story of four young lovers in the electrifying, multicultural 13th arrondissement of Paris. The film opens in select theaters and on demand on April 15.
Adapted from Adrian Tomine’s acclaimed graphic novel, “Paris, 13th District” weaves a breezy tapestry of modern love stories. Lucie Zhang delivers a breakout performance as free-spirited Émilie, who begins a casual relationship with new roommate Camille (Makita Samba). Noémie Merlant (‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire’) plays wide-eyed student Nora, whose new life in Paris is complicated when she is accidentally mistaken for cam girl Amber Sweet (Jehnny Beth).

The treasures of an extended Oscar season just keep on giving, as Venice Film Festival winner and award season favorite “Nomadland” finds its way to theaters — and Hulu subscribers. It’s a special film, about a woman (played by two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand) who pulls up stakes and travels the country by van, hitting theaters at a time when many people have been reexamining their own lives. So if there’s a safe way to see it, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better option out there.
The week’s a bit thinner on conventional crowd pleasers. Channeling “The Wolf of Wall Street”-style energy on an indie scale, both “Silk Road” and “Body Brokers” offer cutting-edge takes on 21st-century crimes: a black market for illegal drugs in the former and a scheme to profit on recovering addicts in the latter. Also in the Scorsese vein, the Montreal-made...

An official selection at TIFF, London Film Festival, New Directors/New Films, and more, as well as France’s official selection for the 93rd Academy Awards, Two of Us marks the feature-length directorial debut for Filippo Meneghetti. Magnolia Pictures has now unveiled the first trailer ahead of a February 5th, 2021 release.
Starring New German Cinema legend Barbara Sukowa (Lola) and Martine Chevallier (Mozart), the leads play Nina and Madeleine, respectively, two women who have been neighbors and in love for decades, but have hidden the true nature of their relationship from their family and friends. An unexpected tragedy threatens to upend the life they have built together.
Mark Keizer in his review lauded the film, proclaiming, “Italian director Filippo Meneghetti’s debut feature Two of Us is an entirely unique and uniquely vital lesbian love story. The tale of two older women whose decades-long secret relationship is threatened after tragedy...

Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to the romance-drama “Two of Us,” the feature directorial debut of France-based Italian filmmaker Filippo Meneghetti.
Magnolia is planning a theatrical release early next year. The films follows two older women, played by Barbara Sukowa and Martine Chevallier, who live across the hall from each other in the same apartment building but have kept their romance hidden for decades.
The film held its world premiere as part of the Toronto International Film Festival’s Discovery program. Variety’s Mark Keizer said in his review that the film is “an affirmation of our universal desire for emotional intimacy and how the right connection can overcome all social and physical limitations. The fact that the relationship is between two lesbians well into their retirement years only makes the film even more quietly groundbreaking.”
“Two of Us” was written by Meneghetti, Malysone Bovorasmy and Florence Vignon.

Stupid For Movies is a weekly live streamed web show airing on Ustream every Thursday at 8 Pm Pdt. Created by Mike Rotman (Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show, Politically Incorrect With Bill Maher), the show is hosted by La Film critics Mark Keizer and Wade Major (IGN's The Digigods). Each week Keizer and Major discuss the best and worst in movies, including reviewing the latest movies to hit the theater, recommending DVDs to “Buy, Rent or Burn”, and talk news with special anchor Chad Vader. Rotman was kind enough to invite myself and my photographer (Aka: boyfriend), Stuart, down to the Streamin’ Garage studio, named for the fact that it literally is a converted garage, to view an episode taping. Though the show does run live, episodes of the show are then converted and uploaded to blip.tv (a job Rotman does himself, a bit of which we witnessed as we...
