As Anthony D’Amato preps backstage at Sony Hall in midtown Manhattan, it’s hard not to notice his six-foot height, horn-rimmed glasses — and the name “Amy” in large black letters on the side of his head. It’s not a tattoo, just black liquid eyeliner easy to wash off, but it suits the occasion. In a few minutes, the New Jerseyan and his 12-piece band will walk onstage, take their places beneath an LED sign lit up with Amy Winehouse’s first name and a simulation of her signature beehive,...

The V.I.P. opening day of the Frieze Los Angeles art fair felt like a family affair as Hollywood power players and art world elites met and mingled to view the best works from galleries around the world. Held at the Santa Monica Airport for the second year running, the all-day event on Thursday, Feb. 29, felt breezier this year, as a new design and 20 percent fewer galleries gave A-listers the space to peruse and schmooze.

Forty-plus years into their career, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are still going strong, with two full-length albums in 2022. But now it’s time for a first for the rock band: the big screen. Variety reports that Universal has optioned the rights to “Scar Tissue,” the 2004 memoir of Rhcp frontman Anthony Kiedis. It’s no surprise the studio wants to make the book into a film after twenty years.

Universal have optioned the rights for a film charting the life of the Red Hot Chili Pepper’s frontman, Anthony Kiedis. More here:
It looks like we might be getting another high-profile music biopic to add to the increasingly large collection that has formed over the last few years. The huge commercial success of 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody continues to influence studio thinking as just last year we saw a Whitney Houston biopic, an Elvis one, a Weird Al Yankovic biopic and Maestro, a tale focused on the life of Leonard Bernstein.
There’s more to come too: we’ve got biopics of Bob Marley, Madonna and Amy Winehouse all in different states of development, and now you can add The Red Hot Chili Peppers to the mix – or one of them at least. According to Deadline, Universal has optioned the rights to Anthony Kiedis’ memoir, Scar Tissue, the ‘warts and...

Exclusive: Universal Pictures has optioned rights to Anthony Kiedis’ New York Times bestseller Scar Tissue, with the feature film project is currently in early development at the studio. It will be produced by Brian Grazer through Imagine Entertainment, Kiedis, and Guy Oseary.
The candid book profiles Kiedis, the famed frontman of Red Hot Chili Peppers, an artist, addict and ringleader. It features a deeply unconventional father-and-son story set against a substance-fueled 1970s and ’80s L.A. punk scene and examines, without judgment, how Kiedis’ experiences shaped the music eventually embraced by millions.

On Jan. 19, the Mothership will land on Hollywood Boulevard when George Clinton officially gets a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “It feels good as shit,” he tells Rolling Stone of the honor on a phone call from his home in Tallahassee, Florida. “I’m trying to think of some jokes to say, but the truth is that I’m proud as hell.”
The ceremony honoring the Parliament-Funkadelic mastermind — whose music added psychedelic and Afrofuturistic flares to funk, effectively laying the groundwork for hip-hop — will take place at 11:30 a.

Even though he's already had a well-liked film in cinemas this year (Asteroid City), Wes Anderson has also been hard at work crafting a series of shorts based on Roald Dahl stories for Netflix. The first, The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar, lands on the streaming service in a couple of weeks and you can see the trailer below.
The short stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular Sugar, a rich guy who learns of a guru (Ben Kingsley) who claims he can see without using his eyes.
Sparking to the notion that this could help him win even more cash, Henry Sugar looks to learn how to do it himself.
Anderson wrote and directed the short, which also features the likes of Wa repertory company members Ralph Fiennes (as Roald Dahl – he pops up in the other shorts) and Dev Patel, plus Richard Ayoade.
The Wonderful Story Of Henry Sugar lands on Netflix on 27 September.

Los Angeles, July 4 (Ians) Flea, the founding member of the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, is not happy with one of the albums of the band and would like to re-record the same.
The ‘By The Way’ rock group’s bassist is not a fan of the way they made their 1984 self-titled record and he blames it on the lack of “connection” with musicians Jack Sherman and Cliff Martinez, who replaced Jack Irons and Hillel Slovak after they quit, though he insists they are “great” at what they do, reports ‘Female First UK’.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, he said: “I always regret the way we made the first one.
“I think the songs are really good. Our band was smoking at the time. But (drummer) Jack (Irons) and (guitarist) Hillel (Slovak) quit, and we hired these two other guys: Jack Sherman and Cliff Martinez.”

Postmodern attempts at genre defiance have become de rigueur for pop artists today. In a streaming-dominated world where we can type away on our laptops to ambient hip-hop in the morning, sing along to old yacht-rock hits on our afternoon commute, and dance to Edm at night, what other way is there to keep our attention than to try to give us everything everywhere all at once? We’ve gotten a few attempts to do just that so far in 2023, from Kara Jackson’s quietly rebellious blending of folk and R&b, to Yves Tumor’s kitchen-sink instrumentation, to 100 gecs’s audacious and absurd hyperpop assaults.
Many of the artists who appear on this list, though, no longer seem content to just break down old barriers, as they also seek to shatter interpersonal and emotional ones as well. The oft-cited isolation of modern living, heavily exacerbated by the pandemic, has...

With three years behind him since he was let go from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Josh Klinghoffer has some thoughts on the music the band has made in his wake. Speaking with the Brazilian podcast 5 Notas recently (via Exclaim), the guitarist argued that Chili Peppers were “doing cooler music” when he was still a member of the band.
Klinghoffer performed on two Red Hot Chili Peppers albums following John Frusciante’s 2009 departure: 2011’s I’m With You and 2016’s The Getaway. Frusciante rejoined in late 2019 to perform on the band’s next two albums, Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen, both of which were released in 2022. “I don’t think I finished [listening to] the second one,” Klinghoffer said. “I was trying to cram it in once before leaving on a plane, and I got as far as maybe the ninth song, and I don’t think I listened to the rest.

One of the 90s’ most unique high school comedies, Encino Man, is currently getting a surge in recognition, and it’s pretty rad! There has probably never been such a rejoiced and universally pleased result of two Academy Award wins than the great comeback stories of Brendan Fraser and Ke Huy Quan. Both have shown great humility and gratefulness and knowing what they have dealt with, both giving genuinely human performances last year is nothing short of amazing. What’s even more impressive is both had been co-stars in this wacky comedy, and people have been gushing over the reunion.
One thing that Brendan Fraser revealed recently in an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show is that before he got the part of Link in Encino Man, Ben Stiller had screen tested for it. And just a few days ago, low and behold, the official YouTube account of the film...

The 2023 Grammy Awards returned to the Crypto.com Arena on Sunday evening, and while Beyoncé made history by breaking the record for the most Grammy wins of all time, Harry Styles took home Album of the Year for his album “Harry’s House.” Styles also won Best Pop Vocal Album.
Beyoncé took home four awards, bringing her career total to 32 — enough to unseat composer Georg Solti as the winningest artist of all time. But this marks the fourth time in a row she’s lost Album of the Year. An astonishing fact for the Grammy record-holder.
Bonnie Raitt pulled an upset in Song of the Year for “Just Like That,” besting the likes of Lizzo, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.
Lizzo, meanwhile, became the first Black woman to win Record of the Year since Whitney Houston in 1994 for “I Will Always Love You.” Lizzo won for “About Damn Time,” stressing the need for positive,...

Jamojaya takes its name after a legend: As relayed in an animated sequence narrated by Joyo (Yayu A.W. Unru), Jamojaya was a prince transformed against his will into a banyan tree. In an act of love, his brother turns himself into a bird to look for him. But their inability to communicate keeps a proper reunion forever out of reach — the bird unable to recognize his brother’s new form, the tree unable to reveal himself even when his brother stands in his branches.
It’s a story Joyo adores so much he’s named his two sons after it: James (Brian Imanuel), now an up-and-coming rapper, and Jaya, who died years ago in a plane crash. And its sense of searching permeates the entire picture, to mostly moving, occasionally frustrating effect.

As a director, Justin Chon has long trafficked in stories about fractured families in heightened situations. “Gook” was about a pair of brothers running their father’s shoe store in the aftermath of his death and in the shadow of the Los Angeles riots. “Ms. Purple” followed estranged siblings trying to make amends with their father before his death. “Blue Bayou” cast Chon himself as an immigrant father attempting to stay in the U.S. while the government tries to toss him out.
Fathers, children, and terrible outside forces are also at play in his fifth feature film, “Jamojaya,” which continues Chon’s traditional obsessions but wraps them in filled with predictable problems, obvious baddies, and trite lessons. In expanding his viewpoint beyond his typically smaller-scale stories — both in terms of the film’s general plot, which follows a rising young rapper who learns (gasp) that the music industry is bad,...

Age-old stories of entertainment industry corruption and suffocating stage-parenting are given a freshly off-kilter perspective in writer-director Justin Chon’s “Jamojaya,” which zeroes in on a few days in the life of a rising Indonesian rapper as he attempts to cut professional ties with his former manager, who also happens to be his father. In many ways a bigger, flashier and more slippery companion piece to Chon’s memorable 2019 Sundance feature “Ms. Purple,” “Jamojaya” is elevated above its familiar narrative paces by sensitive camerawork and a pair of intriguing performances, and its suggestion that showbusiness ambitions and family ties don’t so much collide as unravel on parallel tracks.

Before Covid upended the film festival scene, Sundance premieres were a hotbed of drama as studio chiefs and streaming executives staked out the best seats in the theater and then beat a path for the exits as soon as the credits rolled in the hopes of outmaneuvering each other for the hottest films. After two years of going virtual, Sundance is back in-person. However, it’s unclear if the all-night bidding wars that were such a staple of past festivals will also return in force. At a time of cost-cutting and box office struggles for indie movies, a new era of fiscal restraint may be the order of the day.
But Sundance’s thin mountain air could cause all that economizing to evaporate. And if it does, here are 13 films that could have buyers writing big checks.

Really, it’s all Three Days Of The Condor’s fault. That’s the film that convinced a young, impressionable Shane Black that Christmas could be a suitably dramatic, sometimes ironic, sometimes sincere and heartfelt, backdrop for a thriller. “In it, Christmas played a huge part. It was set against the backdrop of people shopping, Christmas carols are blaring, there’s snow,” says Black, talking exclusively to Empire. “And even the pause at the end where Redford walks outside with the hitman, and the guy says, ‘Can I give you a ride?’ This is a guy who was about to kill him, or someone else. And it really felt appropriate to me that Christmas was the backdrop for that. It struck a spark, to take a holiday and make it not just a backdrop but a character itself.”
That, along with an intriguing grasp of the true meaning of Christmas,...

Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” sequel “Glass Onion” features an eclectic mix of characters, peeled back in layers by a fun murder mystery party that turns deadly serious. The eventual suspects arrive by boat on Miles Bron’s (Edward Norton) isolated Greek island for a vacation away from their champagne problems. Along with colorful outfits and a bright Mediterranean setting, a classic soundtrack accompanies the story.
Classical songs by Johann Sebastian Bach hint at the puzzling wooden box that serves as invitation to the group gathered in Greece. Several Beatles songs like “Blackbird” and the titular “Glass Onion” frame the mystery as well. David Bowie’s “Star” and “Starman” also shine some light on the subject. And let’s not forget the original “Hourly Dong” written and performed by the one and only Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Musician Janelle Monáe stars as the mysterious Cassandra Brand alongside Daniel Craig, who reprises the role of Benoit Blanc.

The persistence of the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 2022, nearly 40 years into their run as the funkiest punk act ever to pack stadiums, was hard to imagine back in the day — they (by their own admission) just lived way too hard. And yet here we are. The Chilis are, one of the last old school alt-rock bands standing, a symbol of 1980s semi-underground energy, 1990s alt-rock superstardom and druggie struggle, and 21st century reinvention. Now, they’re epic survivors and iconic elder statesmen, able to headline a festival and go musically wherever they please.

Former Red Hot Chillies guitarist Josh Klinghoffer has opened up about his 10 years performing with the rock band, claiming that the experience was “enormously stifling”.
Klinghoffer first joined the group in 2009 following guitarist John Frusciante’s exit. However, he was later asked to leave in 2019 once Frusciante returned.
Speaking about his “perfect” decade-long run with the “Californication” band, Klinghoffer told Guitar World (via Radio X) that “as much as I love those guys and loved playing with them, it was also enormously stifling creatively”.
He went on to explain: “They’re an established band with an established sound, and I learned over time how little deviating from that was possible.
“As much as I thought they were up for experimentation, they generally stayed in their own lane.”
The 43-year-old musician added that he would try and avoid “certain chords” in his music writing “if they sounded like something John would...

Red Hot Chili Peppers have released an anthemic new single, “Eddie.” The soulful, meditative rock number reflects on late guitarist Eddie Van Halen and nods to David Lee Roth, who departed Van Halen in 1985.
“It’s only 1983/ please don’t remember me,” Anthony Kiedis croons over the mid-tempo rocker. “For what I did with David/ you know I’m talking David Lee.”
“Sometimes we don’t realize how deeply affected and connected we are to artists until the day they die,” Kiedis said in a statement. “Eddie Van Halen was a one of a kind.

“There’s another musical icon, a global icon, and his name is my brother Taylor Hawkins,” Smith emotionally acknowledged. “And I want to dedicate this to Taylor and his family. I love him. And I miss him everyday. Fly on, Hawk. Fly on, brother.”

While many artists will be honoured with awards at the MTV VMAs, others intend to wow viewers with live performances.
This year, an exciting lineup of artists promises to thrill, but they could also cause major controversy if some reports are to be believed.
A source cited as “close” to Johnny Depp has said that the actor will make an appearance via video at the VMAs.
The source claimed Depp will dress up as the silver astronaut statue awarded to VMA winners.
The claim comes months after Depp won his legal case against his ex-wife Amber Heard whom he sued over a 2018 article she wrote for The Washington Post about her experiences as a survivor of domestic abuse. His lawyers...

Madonna became close with the man she calls her “ride or die” in the same way that most people bond: through late nights out, long conversations — and no small amount of mischief.
In an interview with Variety, the pop icon opens up about her unconventional relationship with Variety’s 2022 Music Mogul of the Year Guy Oseary, that extends from partner-in-crime, at least in their early days in Miami, to trusted business partner and source of “calm wisdom.”
“I was always the adventurous, crazy one,” Madonna says. “As soon as Guy would get a little look of fear in his eyes, I’d think it was a good idea. I would use him as a weathervane.” However, that dynamic only crystallized over time. When the hitmaker first met Oseary, just 18 at the time, they were both unapologetic troublemakers. “As the years went by, he took on a more of a parental role,...
